T-Will Has Triple Double in His D-League Debut

If there was any doubt Terrence Williams is the best player in the D-League, it was dispelled Thursday in his debut with the Springfield Armor.  With Billy King in attendance, Williams scored 16 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and handed out 13 assists.  He also had a blocked shot and a steal. However, he shot only 5-19.

The Armor outscored the Maine Red Claws, 116-112, in Springfield. Scottie Reynolds, the Villanova All-American, added 26 and Craig Brackins, recently sent down by the 76ers, scored 16.  In conversation with the Springfield Republican, King promised Armor fans that the Nets would not be an absentee parent next season but an active participant and a visible presence in Springfield.

Plus

His biggest problem is playing within a system
a) this is not the Nets offense
b) this game featured three new players, sounds like a street ball game, I would expect Twill to do well

Keep him in D League for awhile

It can only do good things. Either he stays there for a bit and runs the league well and comes back and tries to play well for us. Or he stays there for awhile runs the show, teams see something in him and he can package him along with Murphy and some picks maybe for somebody really good. No need to bring him back now.

by Christopher Manchesi on Dec 2, 2010 10:49 PM EST reply actions

Teams already know how good he is

Doing well in the D-league will not raise his trade value

by Atronic on Dec 2, 2010 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

this

He doesn’t even need to raise his trade value by playing well in the dleague (not that him doing well w/ the Armor would affect his value that much anyway), because he already has plenty of trade value, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein.

Terrence Williams still has plenty of trade value if NJ wants to move him but surely first they’ll see how he reacts to D-League wakeup call

Nothing special

Remember when Thabeet was sent to the Dleague and put up monster stats?
TWill isn’t necessarily struggling, he was sent there as a punishment, not to get PT like Thabeet. I wouldn’t get to caught up in this, it’s nothing special for a solid player in the nba to dominate d-leaguers

Great Point

Thabeet drafted at #2 went to the D-League.

Why is sending Twill to the D-League such a big deal?

I still stand on my words. Twill will be a very good player in this league.

I saw T-Will play tonight at Springfield. The kid had a great game and attitude. Triple Double. Showed a lot of leadership and team work out there. You could tell he was happy to play. High fiving the fans after the game. Smiling with Nets GM Billy King (he was there). I also listened to the pre-game on the local radio. He on time and had good practices all week. Even had a laugh when the coach was late one day for practice! I wish him the best.

by power_njerz on Dec 3, 2010 8:09 AM EST reply actions

maybe he's learned

Good to see that King is also keeping an eye on him.

The Nets want this kid to succeed, and you can see that, but he has to want it for himself and he has to want to be a good teammate.

Terrence Williams should have been defending Russel Westbrook the other night and someone should have made that very clear to him that his buffonery has hurt his team.

I like when people say that

Playing in the Pros is a privilege.

People should really start looking at these Pro Athletes as people going to work . Is it a privilege to work at a job? You get hired based on your qualifications, usually. Instead of a degree or certificate of training, Pros have been have been busting there a$$es for years waking up early and going to bed late practicing, hitting the gym and playing. Job experience is high school ball, college ball and AAU ball.

If you cannot maintain or continue to provide the services that are required and necessary you either get demoted, laid off or fired.

People need to stop looking at these guys as more then what they are – regular people that have a talent to do a certain job which is play basketball.

exactly

part of the reason they are paid the amount is because they are public figures and therefore they are held in that regard it is very conveniently forgotten by some fans or players but NBA as a league and NETS as an Organization cannot do that

by SunilP on Dec 3, 2010 7:45 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

correction

Its not part of the reason, it is the primary reason. Nba falls in the entertainment business and has a G rating associated with it so yes character is a big part, talent is not the only reason one is hired.

He has it in his thick skull that he is a scorer…Taking ill advised jump shots and three pointers, plus careless turnovers, is what really got him sent down…

what TYPE of shots is the question

if a majority of those were good clean mid range shots or hard attacks to the rim, that’s what you want from him.

I'm not impressed

I looked at the boxscore, first area I looked at was FTA. He had 7. Why doesn’t he do that in real games? I don’t want to hear crap about the D League or whatever, Williams has the skills to put up similar performances in NBA games but he plays like he’s braindead and scared to get hit.

this is a big waste of time. He’s been punished enough and we need him out there. But he needs to play the right way and play the game that we know that he’s capable of.

Terrence out of any player on this team deserves to be pushedb hard and treated with a firm hand because he has serious potential but he doesn’t seem to realize it. Waking up to read this pissed me off to be honest. The day the light bulb goes off in his head, which could happen, or could not, will be one of the best days ever for this franchise.

Hey MDB,

I usually agree with you, but on this I say, Twill has had very little playing time with the Nets this year and I think he has not had a chance to get into the flow of games. I think and hope his D-League appearance is about getting him minutes not just punishment. I think and hope the Nets want him to get in game shape and get used to playing 25-30 minutes a game without having to deal with the mistakes he is bound to make in the process. Meanwhile, the Nets need to figure out why this kid shows up late. If it wasn’t a pattern in college, then what has changed? Some folks are sure he needs a drill sergeant—or “little general”—- to bring him into line. You don’t even know the kid. The sledge hammer is not the answer to all “behavioral issues.” Given his background, tardiness is pretty mild misbehavior. I hope the Nets show some smarts and sense in working with him to bring the best out of him. It’s win-win if this kid succeeds.

No wonder there's no one at the games

$21 + $27 for tickets?!

It’s not far from me so I was debating it, but that’s ridiculous.
They should be charging $10-15

I could be sitting courtside at the Pru for that!

Experience is only part of it

"You don’t realize how much experience you get playing 82 games in the NBA, it’s like a lifetime," Williams said. "I just tried to take what I learned and help put them in the right position."

His physical attributes were neven in question. His play making decisions were.
What I want to see from T-Will is the maturity that is needed to contribute to this team in a positive manner. Hopefully he is learning his lesson and will be back soon.

Mixed feelings/results

Listened to his postgame interview…

Good points: Says team-oriented things, claims to be humbled (though that sounds like just trying to say the right thing)
Bad points: Thinks he’s learned everything he needs to after one game. Gets caught up in reading clips about himself and focuses too much on what others think of him.

Thoughts?

That's my concern also

Will he soon forget what he’s learnt? As much as we need him to play for the Nets, I think Avery needs to keep him as long as possible. This may be his last chance with this team, I just want him “to get it.”

thought the same thing NetsJetsFan

That was really alarming to me that he said he thought he learned everything after one game. I think that’s a sign of him just hoping to get back to the NBA as soon as possible, I don’t think he has truly grasped the situation yet. I hope that means he will stay down there till at least January. Sending him down for a couple games, and then bringing him back up really won’t do anything. He needs to stay down there for a while to truly appreciate the opportunity the NBA provides him.

Listen, I love Terrence Williams, I think he is already a good player in the NBA. I think if he wants to become a great player, though, he is going to have to take this trip to the D-League seriously. The Nets organization needs to ignore him for a few weeks, let him do his thing down there in the D-League, and then after New Years come back and check up on him. Right now I think he is mostly saying the right things, but I think if we leave him down there for a while he will realize that his actions speak louder than his words. He will be ready to join the Nets again once the changes he claims he has already made are being shown through his actions on a consistent basis.

by rootcactus on Dec 3, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe it is me but

People get caught up on things that IMO are not the real issues.

Lateness is an issue to me. In every profession, you have to be on time. That is the bottom line. In any job, if you dont show up on time you can get reprimanded. That I understand.

5-19 is not great but players have an off game. If 19 attempts is your issue, then I guess Brakins took too many shots too because he had 16 attempts.

I understand people are on the fence with Twill, but lets not nit pick.

Twill’s issues of Lateness is one. TOs to some are an issue. I am not as concerned with that as others.

Shot attempts in the D-league is really nit picking. He is the best player on that team so you would expect him to get more shots.
