Ex-Nets Scatter To Find Work

Two weeks into the NBA season, the free agents from last season's disastrous 12-70 team are still having difficulty finding work.  Josh Boone, fed up with tryouts and promises in the US, has joined the Zhejiang Whirlwinds of the Chinese Basketball Association, where he doesn't expect to stay for long.

Bobby Simmons was waived by the Spurs...so they could sign former teammate Chris QuinnRafer Alston is reportedly waiting for a job offer in Europe. Jarvis Hayes still can't find work and Sean Williams is back in the D-League. Trenton Hassell is spending time with his family in Clarksville, TN, hoping for one more call from an NBA team.

Does anyone still remember the days people were bashing Frank for not playing SWAT?

sure showed him eh?

That’s why I say, we love the unknown because it gives hope. We like it because we don’t know what could come from it, not because we know it’ll be good. That’s why every fanbase has one benchwarmer that they keep riding their coach for not playing. You’d be surprised how many Spurs fans last year were clamoring over Ian Mahinmi not getting playing time, because he was supposed to be a diamond in the rough

by muwu on Nov 8, 2010 9:10 AM EST reply actions

here's another irony

Nets fans wanted Boone and Williams to start over Collins and Allen.

Boone and Williams are out of the league. Collins and Allen are still playing.

And if people are wondering why the Nets were so terrible when they had Kidd, Carter and Jefferson, see above.

And you don’t major minutes, every game, by being soft.

Brook always plays, every single game… Very impressive…

Were we not simultaneously one of the worst offensive AND defensive teams in the nba last year?

I mean, at least other bad teams are normally just bad on defense for the most part. The Nets couldn’t defend OR score

by muwu on Nov 8, 2010 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

That's not the point

Doesn’t matter how pathetic the Nets were – no college team would come close to beating the worse NBA team…I assume you are being sarcastic though.

agree

At least once a year I get in a debate with someone about this…What i have come to understand is there are actually people out there who actually believe the BEST college teams could beat the Worst professional team. (Ex. Kentucky last year could beat Nets). I always assume people are trying to joke around, but sometimes they are dead serious. Anyone who believes this looses all credibility IMO.

Hayes was terribly inconsistent last year

Shot only 34% from three. One game he’d be hot and hit 2-4 threes, the next he’s give you nothing

by muwu on Nov 8, 2010 9:20 AM EST up reply actions

Need to keep Hayes unemployed a little longer.

Nets could still re-sign up to be used in a trade if more salary is needed (I think around 2.4 million). He was supposedly in the first Melo trade, to Utah.

I assume if another NBA team wants Hayes, Nets would have to give up their rights to him.

Not sure what would happen if he gets an offer to sign abroad and then Nets wanted to use him for a trade?

I honestly cant blame the players (any of them) for what happened. Except maybe Yi. ha. kidding. not really.

Not so bad...but

Some of these guys are not so bad, but I think teams are staying away from them, because of the stigma of having been on such a bad team last year. For Sean, DLEAGUE today, bagging groceries at PUBLIX in MIami is his next stop. Of everybody, really only Jarvis Hayes has a game. He is a shooter and deserves a chance to play. Talking about Sean May, I wonder what happens to him, and what of Zoubeck? Both May and Zoubeck might bring more than PETRO. PETRO seems “out of gas….” I just crack myself up! GO NETS!

Josh boone News

“Josh Boone, fed up with tryouts and promises in the US”
I actually want to know who told Netsdaily this because its def inaccurate. Netsdaily should start reporting real facts.

by uptown4784 on Nov 8, 2010 3:05 PM EST reply actions

Josh Boone in his own words...

"It should be short term," Boone said through e-mail. "I know, as do a lot of others, that I am an NBA-level player. But unfortunately some decision-makers didn’t view me as being worth anything. I’ll have to see what happens with the lockout next year. But I’d like to come back."

Al Iannazzone, in the Record…

Boone met with the Cavaliers in the off-season and had a few other teams invite him to training camp. But he said none would offer him a guaranteed deal so he signed with Zhejiang Chouzhou of the Chinese Basketball Association.

actually he barely got any playing time because Kiki was more concerned in playing Yi. Which got us nowhere, since he continued to stink up the court and now he’s playing for another team anyway. When Boone got consistent playing time he put up double-doubles. He’s a good player. Better than some of the guys we have now, unfortunately. Dont forget that basketball is a business and its all politics, and not all decisions are fair or based on true talent, performance or work ethic.

inaccurate.

I would like to know WHEN this so-called interview was conducted (as opposed to published). Interviews are time sensitive…if it was conducted during free agency (which i suspect it was) before he actually moved to China to play, then this entire interview means nothing to me at this point.

by NetsNetsNets on Nov 9, 2010 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Your backup center, when you have a center like Brook Lopez...

is just that, a backup…What were you expecting?

"Until it ends, there is no end"

by M I K E on Nov 8, 2010 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

I would expect Petro to be BETTER than some of the guys we got rid of last season. Not worse. Fair expectation I think.

by NetsNetsNets on Nov 8, 2010 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Avery is handling Petro correctly.

He is benching him and giving his minutes to a PF.

Petro will have to earn more minutes with harder play. That was always his problem.

BTW, Petro keeps touch with LaLa apparently. They tweeted about President BO recently.
LaLa knows who to talk with about coming to the New York Area Nets.

by jerry25 on Nov 8, 2010 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

Boone's problems were:

1. He was a tweener – Not big enough to guard bigger centers, lacked confidence in his shooting to be a decent PF.

2. He played best when he was given significant minutes and shown confidence. A backup has to learn to play the same way when only give 7 minutes, instead of 20 minutes.

3. He now has a chance to work on his FT shooting problem or they will laugh at him in Chinese too.
I hope he will experiment with shooting underhand.
Its been decades since a terrible FT shooter attempted to imitate Rick Barry. Bout time.
That would be a sign that Boone is serious, if he could shoot say 60% shooting underhand.

Clearly Boone has a mental problem too and he isn’t helping himself.

by jerry25 on Nov 8, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

These guys are the lucky ones

They dont have to play for the Nets anymore! And theres a LOT more money in Asia than there is in the NBA. Good for them…everyone needs to play for people who appreciate them. Its the NBA’s loss I think. Oh, and be careful about believing everything you read and taking it as hard facts….even Iannazzone. He has a deadline to meet, remember that.

by NetsNetsNets on Nov 8, 2010 3:22 PM EST reply actions

uh, are you saying

that the quote attributed to Boone was wrong?

Boone’s problems were all in his head. I spoke not long ago with someone on the Nets staff who counts himself a friend of Boone’s. When in workouts, Boone would go up against Okafor, he would kill him, but against lesser players he couldn’t or wouldn’t. It was mystifying.

It was the issue when he was drafted. It was the issue when his contract ran out.

by Net Income on Nov 8, 2010 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

I think you should be leery of anyone who “counts themselves as a friend” of anyone and offers their own personal opinion on someones career as fact.

by NetsNetsNets on Nov 9, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

and i dont know if the quote was “wrong” but it is certainly old. Id like to see an interview from NOW that hes already been in china for a while. I doubt he wants to come back at this point. That interview was definitely done BEFORE he even left….no one would say that after the fact, it could damage his contract with the Chinese league. Boone’s smart….its the people around him that dont think.

by NetsNetsNets on Nov 9, 2010 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Swat time

I thought he would have hung on but I still like what he does on a basketball court. What he does off if could still be his problem. As far as the rest of the bunch only Hayes I thought had any talent. I’m suprised he’s still out of work.
