How to get Melo without trading Derrick Favors
This depends if Charlotte can continue to suck and Melo is willing to sign with us.
1- Proky wants Melo
2- Charlotte is looking to get rid of salary and Larry Brown likes Devin Harris. Also Larry Brown and Billy King are good friends which makes the possibility of a deal easier
3- Denver wants to stay competitive and shed salary
3 Way Deal
NJ Gets Melo (17M on the books this year, 18M player option next year signed to 3 year extension for 20M per) and Boris Diaw (9M this year, 2 more years left at 9M per)
Charlotte gets Devin Harris (9M this year + JR Smith 6M- expiring + Kris Humphries 3M Expiring. So Charlotte gets a former All star PG, younger than Wallace BTW and sheds 9M in salary for 2011
denver gets Gerald Wallace (9M + 2 more years left) + Troy Murphy (11M Expiring). Denver gets an all star player and 11M off the books for 2011
Obviously some draft picks need to be added there but I think this could work for all teams.
Does this handicap us long term. NO.
Why? Next year we would have 55M in salaries tied up to 10 players
2012 we would have 47M in salaries tied up to same 10 players- however 21M would be coming off the books at then end of the year in salaries (Diaw/morrow/farmar/petro)
We would be extremely competitve and have significant $ available for 2012 FA Class and or sign and trades.
Melo would only be 28, Favors 21, Lopez 24 with over 20M available for someone else…..
Feedback greatly appreciated

If it works, god bless us
But I don’t think Larry (or MJ) likes Devin THAT much. Might work for Denver: their team gets a little better and the fans can look at Wallace and say “I like his style.” Certainly it would get us Proky’s Big Shiny Player without destroying our future.

We don't NEED Melo.
What I would do is wait until he becomes a FA and then do the whole presentation thing that we did earlier this summer and go from there. I do not wish to gut our team for him. If he goes to the Knicks then whatever.
We may not need Melo, but we NEED a significant upgrade
at either the 2 or the 3. You cant win in this league with Morrow and Outlaw as your wing players.
As for FA, we have done the presentation thing, it got us Travis Outlaw/Anthony Morrow and Johan Petro. Free Agents are not going to come here until we prove ourselves.
BTW, I dont think trading Harris and Murphy is gutting a team.
I seem to remember the same being said of LeBron about a year ago

That doesn't mean every NY media report last year didn't link James with NY
They all thought he’d never in a million years turn down the bright lights of NY for Miami

Right, but
My point is that if we don’t trade for Carmelo Anthony, he’s going to where he has made it clear where he wants to go.. NY. LeBron was never on the trade market and had never given any indication where he wanted to go. The two situations are nothing alike.
How has he made it clear? Because Spike Lee says so?
When I hear the quote out of Carmelo’s mouth I’ll believe that…until then it’s just speculation from sources that aren’t directly involved in the situation. The same thing happened last year with James when Jared Dudley was tweeting that James was signing with NY to play with Amare. Once again it was a source with what one would take as credibility running his mouth about stuff he knew nothing about.

He may have made it clear that he doesn't want to stay in Denver, but that's hardly the same thing as saying it's only NY.
by Stephen Schmidt on Nov 4, 2010 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions
With the amount of sources reporting it, it’s hard to believe anything else. Obviously, Carmelo has spoken with the likes of Jason Kidd, Amare, Spike Lee, etc. and it has shown he wants to a Knick. I hope not, but thats what the evidence says unfortunately
Just saying, that same type of evidence was everywhere last season with James (Sabathia, Dudley, Amare...)
All those guys at one point or another said LeBron wanted to take over MSG, and when given the choice he went to south beach. Things can change quite a bit before the summer, if there is anything to change at all. If I had to bet, I’d gamble Anthony gets traded before the deadline, but my bet would be Chicago.

You make a good point
Harris
Mayo
Melo
Favors
Lopez
Thats a great, great, great lineup. extremely balanced w/ 5 all stars
having mayo in that lineup would mess up the whole offense
both lopez and melo need a lot of touches to be effective…so does harris…add mayo on top of that..u have disaster.. and a horrible defensive lineup…
if the nets were to get melo in FA…nets would do best with sticking with morrow…at least he can shoot
Mayo can shoot
drive, and create
Harris can slash for us and become a more traditional PG
Lopez and Melo become the creators.
Actually, with Favors in there too, it may be better sticking with Morrow, but we are already dreaming about even getting Mayo or Carmelo
Don't see Denver doing it
Sure they would like to remain competitive, but more than that they need a guy to rebuild around, because if they don’t get one, who are they gonna build around?
If I were Denver
I would definitely do it. They’d have a real chance at championship this year (not a huge chance, but a decent one). They’d get a player only 2 years older than Melo, and better. Murphy would help with their injured front court. And Afflalo’s emergence means scoring will be at less of a premium for them.

i can see denver doing this deal..easy only because it'll give them an all star and a few picks
actually..if this were to go down..it’ll be a great deal for denver
My trade would be just Denver and NJ
Denver gets Murphy, Hump, TWill, James, 2 first rounders
NJ gets Melo and Anderson
They get two young players, two first rounders, and two expiring contracts, plus we take Anderson’s 4 years off of their hands
see..this is the trade that I WANT to happen
buti don’t see denver being satisfied with this….which is a shame..cause they’ll be getting 2 quality players and shedding close to 15 mil with 2 first round picks….thats a hell of a sign and trade.
That is a fair trade, both ways.

I see 2 options for Melo fans
Option #1 is realizing what is going on, and who has the upper hand. Denver is in a reallll tough spot. The NEED to trade Melo for ANYTHING. This is handicapped by the fact that supposedly (and lets assume this is true), he will only sign an extention with the Knicks, Nets, or Bulls. So basically, the Nets only have to outbid THOSE TEAMS. We can easily do that without giving up Favors. Not only do we have a plethora of young players, but we also have 3 assumed mid 1st rounders, 1 lottery pick, and I believe 6 2nd rounders in the next 3 years. Frankly, just using our picks and expiring contracts could be the “best” deal offered by those 3 teams.
Option #2, you blow up the team to get Chris Paul. Contrary to Melo, I think Chris Paul ALONE can significantly improve this team… so even if we dont get BOTH players, we are still in a good situation. Plus, if we get Chris Paul and manage to still have 17-18 million in cap space next summer (pretty hard to do, since I think we’d have to take on Okafor)… I think everyone in the league will know where Melo is headed. Maybe Denver will finally realize they’re going to get low-balled. So for Paul… I’d be willing to give up a lot more.
Those are the 2 options that make sense to ME. I realize some people think differently, but if we get Melo in one of those two ways.. I won’t complain.
Paul is the real superstar
But NO is off to a hot start, and he is The Franchise. So we either hope they collapse or wait 1-2 years.
On the downside, short PGs have a history of not lasting in the NBA. I think CP3’s knee troubles, while overblown, are an indication that he’s not immune to this problem.

I can't see why Charlotte would be interested in that
I’m sure they’d love to add Harris, but not at the expense of Gerald Wallace. They were against sending out Diaw and Augustin for Harris, no way they send out Diaw and Wallace.
by Stephen Schmidt on Nov 4, 2010 11:55 AM EDT reply actions
They are trying to get rid of salary....
Augustin is cheap, Diaw makes 9M per. MJ is trying to get rid of salary.
However u r probably right, there would need to be more players/cash or draft picks to make it enticing for them.
I want Melo but want to Keep Lopez and Favors

I don't know if you watched last nights game but.
by the third we were +9 with Harris on the court and -10 with him off of it. Frankly, while he is scoring less than he did in his 08-09 turn, he is much much more efficient and better at getting looks for his teammates. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have watched him grow, and he has grown into something good.

devin is having a great year, augustin is way too small to guard bigger guards
we need to keep favors, only trade im making is outlaw for melo and we know that aint happening
I say lets forget about Melo
and lets get a guy that is athletic/create his own shot. My prefered trade is keep Favors, T-Will and get Jason Richardson from the Pheonix Suns which are dying to get a PF (they have Hedo at that position and he is a SF.)And maybe Swap D.James for their 1st rounder in 2011 or 2012.
Lopez/Petro
Hump/Favors/Smtih
Outlaw/Morrow/Ross
Richardson/Williams
Harris/Farmar
i like it
But why would they get rid of there second best piece? Given they are trying to shave cost left adn right but they def don’t want to kill the fan base or the face of their franchise.

Charlotte Would never do this
They have stated in the past the Wallace is the only untouchable on their team. Works for everyone else though but this my friend is nothing more than a pipe dream. so might i suggest that you drop the pipe. Crack is wack.
Charlotte won't give up Wallace
Do you want to know what truly is the only way to land Melo without giving up Favors? Making the playoffs & finishing 10+ games better than the Knicks. If Melo hits Free Agency, we have to be significantly better than the Knicks to have a shot. I do think that if the Knicks stink up the joint, and we make the playoffs this season, Melo has to consider Brooklyn as a viable destination.
Say we give the crazy stat guys some credence. According to Hollinger, Melo had an Estimated Winds Added (EWA) of 15.5 last year. Basketball Prospectus has his Wins Above Replacement Player (WARP) at 9.5. For the sake of argument, let’s split the difference and round up, saying he’s worth 13 wins to the Knicks & Nets. Given the poor SF play on both teams, I doubt that’s a stretch. Given that, if you’re Melo would you want to sign with a 20 something win team, whether it’s the Knicks or Nets? No chance, especially if that 20 something win team is the Nets. Add that 13 games to a fringe playoff team that won 35+ games, & you have an attractive situation.
EWA is a Hollinger stat based on PER
and is therefore useless. It overwhelmingly rewards bulk shooting and is not based on any mathematical relationship to actual wins. Melo averages a WARP and Win Shares of 7 per year, so that’s a better figure to go with: last year he was good, the year before less so, but he is consistently around 7 wins each year.
Of course if you’re trying to attract Melo, just tell him he’s worth 25 wins and the rest of the Nuggets are holding him back. What’s the harm? That he’ll ask for more money?
by calling all toasters on Nov 4, 2010 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions
why would melo go to a team worse than nuggets?
that is what the nets will be if we trade our players for him
There’s no way Larry would part with Wallace. If he was available, I think I’d rather have him and the cost and salary is much cheaper. Plus I don’t think he’ll balk about coming here. They’ll lose Diaw also? Nope.
Well back to the lab. We’ll come up with some sort of trade that’s reasonable and makes sense. Honestly speaking though, the more this drags on, I think it can benefit the Nets to wait. While the Knicks have shown flashes, if the Nets can play hard and show they can seriously improve, they stand a chance. Plus everyone’s downing Newark. If Melo gets a look at Newark and the Net fans come out to support the team, they may stand a chance. Plus the price could drop the longer they wait. I say wait it out and see where it takes us. The keys are Harris saying healthy, Murphy getting into form and this team playing defense. If those things happen, we’ll be fine. Let’s wait this thing out.
