...what would he have done? He had a promising but raw 19 year old rookie (the #1 overall pick) who could jump out of the building but had limited offensive moves. Philadelphia had the greatest scorer of the time, a perpetual All-Star, a flashy superstar worshipped by streetballers, who also sold a ton on jerseys. A college legend, taken with the #1 overall pick as well. And he was still only 29. He had (allegedly single-handedly) taken his team to the NBA Finals a few years before. Who would Proky (and/or Billy King want)? Would he have been willing to give up 2 #1 picks and cap relief to get Allen Iverson for Dwight Howard?
Apparently the answer is yes.
