Is Honesty the Best Policy?
No one can accuse Avery Johnson of raising expectations He regularly talks about mental lapses...as he did Friday following a loss to the Jazz: "Our team, we're not at a point right now mentally where we really believe deep down in our gut that we can win these games."
This new trend in management, ESPN's Jerry Green writes, can't help sales, suggesting fans respond to Nets ticket agents this way: "We're not at a point right now mentally where we really believe deep down in our gut that we can pay to watch you lose these games."

yes i mean
Let’s be real. This is a 20 win team. I love honesty. I don’t mind a 20 win team as long as we are building in the right direction and I doubt that now

exactly
our expectations were a bit high after last season. We made a great pick with Favors but he is a project so his presence isn’t going to massively improve our record this season.
Like many other teams we struck out in free agency and ended up with C-list free agents (some of whom i think are good fits with the team).

Before the season began
I thought this was a 33 win team…then they went 2-0 playing not so great and I thought to myself " WOw this is a playoffs team!" But now back to reality. I now believe we will be somewhere around 25-30 wins this year.. unless we make a trade for he-who-shall-not-be-named.

We can be worst in the east again.
the idea is kind of…exciting.

I doubt the worst
but def not a playoffs team unless we learn to win tough games

Wizards?
there’s a pretty big divide between the haves and have nots. Some pretty awful teams could sneak Into the playoffs.

There's five locks in the east
Celtics, Magic, Heat, Hawks and Bulls. Then after those 5, everybody else in the east can sneak in one of the 3 spots left,

I feel like if fans are watching the games
They’ll see what avery’s saying whether he says it or not.

there was a history of exaggerating
we did a piece a couple of years ago laying out Ed Stefanski’s comparison of Nets draftees to NBA players (Antoine Wright to Allan Houston, Sean Williams to Kenyon Martin, etc. etc.) Now, aside from the fact that Avery has compared Favors to Duncan, KG, and Malone, that’s not as bad.
Rod Thorn also said the Nets did the Carter trade to get enough cap space to sign TWO maxed out free agents, which was also an exaggeration, at best.
So don’t think that fans can tell the difference between good and bad. His candor is refreshing.
His candor is what make me feel better after losses…
Its like therapy

the other reality is that folks like us
are in it no matter what
to get the rest of the casual fans you just have to win.
imagine something extremely witty here
well...do u see it that way?
cause, only hardcore nets fans read this stuff since we’re not really a hot topic anywhere….
and if we hardcore fans can’t see what the nets are right now for ourselves..then i don’t know…i don’t see anyone here saying the nets are one of the top teams in the east..
the fair weather fans just see records and stats so they don’t really matter either way…no way they’re gonna read up on all this.
Avery’s candor is one of the things that I respect most about him.

And I find you spinning 'round in my brain

Wait, I still don't get it: Avery is obviously talking about the co-captains Brook and Devin.
These 2 are mentally soft. Part of it is because of holdover from last year, but it’s also in their mental makeup.
So, why are the Nets FO so anxious to trade away our blank slate Derrick Favors? when we should be looking to move these 2 buffoons.
Does anyone here seriously think BLo and Dev would change their mental makeup with Melo here?
Another question: Does anyone here think Melo could mask BLo’s and Dev’s weaknesses?
Outlaw is the new Yi - just with more money and longer contract without the 7.2 rebounds and occasional shooting streak.
What kind of offense are we running? "iso... iso-sorry" -NetsNewark
I'm not trying to hijack this thread into a no-Melo rant.
I feel pretty comfortable saying nearly all of us here wants Melo. The question is “what cost”? I don’t think swapping Favors+Murphy+picks for Melo addresses the underlying problem with our team – which is our co-captains.

I love Avery and what he's trying to do here... it's all about changing the mentality this year but there are some things I don't get:
- Why isn’t he giving enough PT to DJ and Twill? We traded 2 picks to get DJ, throughout the summer Avery praised him as being NBA ready, he looked pretty darn solid in the summer league, and every time he gets a chance to play, he energizes the team… I get it, he makes rookies mistakes but he needs some burn to correct them! ! He’s such a hard worker and good dude… I just don’t get it… I’m a UT alumni and I actually talked to him and saw him practice and stuff and he was the soul of UT for at least 2 years… SMH Avery!
- Why does he have Lopez so far from the rim?
- Why doesn’t he give a chance to Murphy? I mean Petro, Graham and Ross are playing… why not a guys who averages a double-double for his career?

yeah
i see no reason behind the James benching.

I kind of get it. Avery wants to make sure his rookies are ready to assume a regular role, and perform it at a high level. He also might want him to watch how some of the veterans handle themselves in certain situations before handing the role to a rookie. If a journeyman fails, he is more apt to handle being dropped from the rotation. Guys like Graham and Ross have been spot rotation guys for a few years, and that is their role. Graham has a few more days before Nets decide on his contract. They probably wanted a greater chance to evaluate whether he is worth extending.
