How does +/- work?

I'm asking because it's usually used as a measuring stick around here (and in the media) but it doesn't seem all that indicative.

Specifically with Nets fans it's used to knock T-Will, but in easily Favors best game this season against Miami, his +/- was a -18 despite scoring 13 points on 44% shooting and 13 rebounds (10 offensive!) in 24 minutes.

Meanwhile, T-Will (who I like more than most), had only a -14 from 11 points on 36% shooting, 4 rebounds, and 4 turnovers in 28 minutes.

So, basically how did someone who shot less efficiently, scored less points, grabbed less rebounds, and turned the ball over 4 more times (Favors had 0 TOs) in more time played have a better +/-?
