Deadlines and Commitments - XIII
Off they go into the wild blue (red?) yonder. The Nets' round-the-world tour, with stops in the former Communist capitals of Moscow and Beijing, as well as Guangzhou, begins on Saturday and really doesn't end until they return from Boston on October 20. That's six stops, three countries, three continents...and roughly 17,500 miles.
Although there's no television coverage of Saturday's game vs. the 76ers, the rest of the Nets' preseason games will be broadcast on either YES, MSG or NBA TV. Plus you can expect a lot of news and video from Mikhail Prokhorov's Onexim Group, the Nets and the NBA this Sunday when the Nets arrive in Moscow. While the trip will be grueling, a preseason world tour is unprecedented. Also, once they arrive back in New Jersey on October 20, they'll have a week without any games and won't be on the road again until November 5.
October 9 - Nets vs. 76ers, Prudential Center, Newark, 1 p.m. ET; beginning of the Nets' round-the-world preseason tour. No TV in New Jersey/New York or New Jersey/Philadelphia.
October 10 - Nets' Open Practice (Moscow) and Basketball Clinic, CSKA Moscow Universal Sports Hall, Moscow, Russia, 10:30 a.m ET. Nets will also open a team store at the Moscow Adidas, and meet the boss, Mikhail Prokhorov, for the first time.
October 11 - Nets depart Moscow for Beijing.
October 13 - Nets vs. Rockets, Wukesong Arena, Beijing, China, 8 a.m. ET. Among other planned events: NBA Cares community events, player appearances and basketball clinics, Game live on NBA TV.
October 16 - Nets vs. Rockets, Guangzhou International Sport and Entertainment Center, Guangzhou, China, 7:30 a.m. ET. Nets and Rockets open China's newest arena. Game live on NBA TV.
October 17 - Nets depart Guangzhou for the trip across the Pacific and home.
October 19 - Nets vs. Knicks, Madison Square Garden, New York, 7:30 p.m. ET. Game live on MSG.
October 20 - Nets vs Celtics, TD North Center, Boston, 7:30 p.m. ET; end of the Nets round-the-world preseason tour. Game live on YES.
October 25 - Rosters set for NBA Opening Night, 6 p.m. ET. Teams must submit rosters of no more than 15 players to the league offices in New York.
October 26 - At least Ben Uzoh's and possibly Brian Zoubek's partially guaranteed contracts become fully guaranteed unless waived.
October 27 - Opening Night, Nets vs. Pistons, Prudential Center, Newark, 7 p.m. ET. First regular season NBA game in Newark. Game Live on YES.
November 1 - Deadline by which the Nets must decide to extend the rookie contracts of Brook Lopez and Terrence Williams.

Mid-May '11 News …. 30 Win Nets Grab #3 Lotto Pick
Pure Fantasy Speculation but … it could happen:
Last year’s Pistons had a 27 win record that landed them in the 7th slot, with a 7% at #3. This year that spot will belong to the Nets with a 30 win record and the Nets will select consensus pick NJ native Kylie Irving PG/SG.
Irving (1) will join Lopez (5), Favors (4), James (3), Williams (2) and Morrow (2) who lived up to their potential under Avery’s coaching staff and were the main reason why the Nets took 30 wins.
The Nets began the season slowly as they learned Avery’s system, grew as players and gained chemistry. By All-Star break they had topped their 2009 season wins with 20, taking several eastern/western powerhouses in overtimes, and earning Lopez his first all-star nod and Favors a spot on the Rookie Team and Williams a Sophomore spot. The new Nets really turned the corner post Break as they dramatically moved up both the offensive and defensive rankings and vanquished teams such as the Heat, Lakers and Celtics, creating a league-wide sensation.
With near capacity crowds at the Pru Center towards the second half of the season, the energy was palpable and drew opposing (and envious) players praise. With this exciting young core, top notch staff, committed ownership, fan energy and bright future, the Nets have become the “It” team, outshining the Knicks to become of a favored destination for the 2011 free agent class.
In the off-season, Murphy re-signs a very affordable 3-year deal with the Nets and expiring deals provide this strong team the ammo to gain great new players.
Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Barclay’s arena is ahead-of-schedule and there is little doubt that it will be ready for the team for next year’s 2012 season.
uncle cliffy?!
i like the optimism… my sarcasm doesn’t show this… but the whole part about being the “IT” team makes me question the whole thing
Why not …
exciting young core, top notch staff, committed ownership, fan energy (plus picks), great new arena in major market >>> the Nets have become the "It" team ..
Why not indeed!
It all starts with a dream and a commitment to achieving that dream.
And as Steven Tyler of Aerosmith would say: “Dream on dream until your dreams come true.”
and certainly 30 is very achievable …
I just wanted them to be shooting distance of a top lottery pick. 30 gives them a chance.
i agree with the odds...
and it wouldn’t be the worse case if we got back into the lottery…
but i’d rather have KYRIE Irving

Will Prokhorov be at opening night?
He hasn’t been in the U.S. since July 13th, at least not on his private jet.
Section 18, Row 7 at The Rock!
speaking of..
Petro, deservedly so, get a 57 overall rating. And is it just me, or can is TWill a scoring machine in that game?
Yeah also I update everyone in the leagues attributes basically
Every time 2k comes out always wrong every time I update T-will he goes to like 84 he’s so well rounded, well rounded players in 2K get high ratings even if not great shooters, said he had bad hands and couldn’t pass and his ball handling was low.
Speaking of China
Someone made the Voice of the People on today’s Daily News saying how much this is a bad idea.

Pound-foolish
Orinda, Calif.: “State agency says Bruce Ratner used federal program to finance Atlantic Yards project, Nets arena” (nydailynews.com, Oct.6) says the program grants green cards to foreign investors. I am an immigrant who used to prepare employment and family-based immigration applications. Granting permanent residency to “investors” will put a tremendous burden on taxpayers. “Investors” with a mere half-million-dollar investment are likely to bring their extended families, who will need education, health care, even welfare. They are not likely to pay enough taxes to offset the costs of those services. American leaders should learn from China, which understood decades ago that population growth and immigration impede economic success.

Alliance for a Sustainable USA
That is nonsense.
People from all countries are entitled to apply for permanent residence and a certain number are granted PR every year.
What is wrong with limiting the PR who are approved to be those who might already be millionaires?
The question is whether these people have been properly screened are really DO have 1/2 million to forfeit on permanent residence. That is part of the screening process and Yes, there could be some fraud – perhaps relatives or others are lending or giving the financing, or maybe even the Chinese Govt.
However, if they do bring their extended families, legally, that is a process that would take many years if not decades as there is a long approval process when going through legal channels. They would not be a burden on the USA. It is the illegals (including those that overstay their visa) and many of the refugee type families legally admitted that are the burden on our society.
the Chinese government?
I doubt the Chinese government is interested in investing in a Brooklyn rail yard and helping Ratner retire his debt.
Forgot Nov. 1 Deadline when Wiz need to decide on an extension for Yi Jianlian!
ESPN insider Stein hears that Wiz may actually “consider” an extension for Yi, after his good World’s and start to season, emphasis on “consider”.
Meanwhile John Hollinger writes that Yi’s inside shot percentage, at 43.5%, is by far worst in NBA.
He also says that “everyone in the league thinks he’s 25” (his next birthday is in 2 weeks), suggesting time is running out for Yi to “turn the corner”.
Story implies that Wiz weren’t planning to extend Yi. I doubt very much that Nets would have planned to extend Yi had he remained. However, it might have been an embarrassment (Yormarket in particular), so it is just as well that Nets don’t have to deal with that decision.
