Dave D: Najera for Humphries "Could Be Imminent"

In his mailbag (which we can never get enough of), Dave D'Alessandro reports the rumored trade of Eduardo Najera for Kris Humphries is "back on and could be imminent". Other news: getting Brook Lopez and Yi Jianlian to work together is "now the top priority of this season–period"; Devin Harris often has to be talked "off the ledge"; and Terrence Williams slept through shootaround before the Bucks game.

Managing to rid ourselves of Najera would be equivalent to a win for me.

by UKNJ on Jan 8, 2010 5:37 PM EST reply actions

yes! Humphries is a hustle player who can definitely help us out. I LOVE this deal.

by canofan42 on Jan 8, 2010 5:38 PM EST reply actions

I’d be ecstatic if we could dump Najera

by J-Kay on Jan 8, 2010 5:41 PM EST reply actions

Can’t believe the Najera signing was supported by NI and other hopeless believers here…

by brett on Jan 8, 2010 5:41 PM EST reply actions

I did not support Najera signing and I am a hopeful believer. It is the secret of my great success.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 5:43 PM EST reply actions

Not directly, but you justified his signing for quite some time, stressing ad nauseum his marketing potential (which was probably never realized) and his flexible contract.

by brett on Jan 8, 2010 5:50 PM EST reply actions

I can tell you right now the guys that resent Yi. Sean Williams, Boone, and Devin Harris. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen Yi do a nice move or have one of his good games since coming back. And not see Sean(all though he doesn’t do much since hes been benched) or Boone even react to it. And their has been plenty of times Devin has gone up to Yi either yelling at him for not being where he is supposed to or not helping on defense.

TRADE Sean, Boone,and Devin!!!

TRADE THESE 3 for CP3 !!!

@kuljo

Hey, how about we offer Battie, Dooling and Najera for Kobe also?

by Anthony on Jan 8, 2010 6:00 PM EST reply actions

What a great column Dave D writes….. very illuminating stuff on locker room chemistry and on how the Nets “brain-trust” (BWAHAHA) is trying to figure out how to get Brook and Yi on the same page…. and put the burden of responsibility on Devin Harris (gulp)

….. a GREAT read….. and it’s very easy to see how we are at 3-30.

by oligarch on Jan 8, 2010 6:01 PM EST reply actions

I happen to like Humphries a little too but this is more about dumping Najera I think.

While I’m not a huge Boone fan (he’s just OK), I think it is odd that Dave D. lumps him in as a “vet” that should seek winning pastures like Battie (who is not a rotation player on a good team anyway).

Shocked that T. Williams (does not deserve a nickname) slept through a shootaround. Boy was I wrong about this stooge. That’s right, I’m already judging him. He’s been a clown (that’s the 3-32 record talking folks).

While I understand not giving young players away for nothing, or for older better players who will not be around next year etc, I do not necessarily agree with the notion that the Nets’ 6 young guys (Harris, Lee, CDR, T. Williams, Yi, Lopez) are so untouchable. Are most of these guys so great that they don’t basically amount to a role of the dice just like other similar young players? That’s what I am seeing anyway. Just sayin’ (probably the 3-32 record talking again).

I have never seen that NI has supported the Najera signing.

by Voice of Reason on Jan 8, 2010 6:02 PM EST reply actions

I was somewhat excited when I heard that we were signing Najera…..I am totally disappointed now but I am not upset with Najera…I just feel that the guy has run out of gas…Kris Humphries would be a great addition….

by NetFan48 on Jan 8, 2010 6:05 PM EST reply actions

@Brett
Never liked the signing, okay? NEVER. Once he was signed, suggesting he can help the team is not supporting the signing. Either you find the material to support your case or you stop obsessing about me.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:09 PM EST reply actions

@ kuljo

i’d give new orleans Devin, our #1 pick, and a few expirings for CP3 and two of their heavy contracts (Peja and Posey)

man CP3 would bring Team basketball back to the Nets…too bad New Orleans ain’t quite ready for a firesale yet…

someone’s gotta get that team some guns.

by NJQuestCat on Jan 8, 2010 6:10 PM EST reply actions

IF this happens, it won’t be straight up. There will almost certainly be a pick involved. The Nets have 10 picks over the next three weeks, the most in the NBA. The Mavs (and the Knicks) have four, the least.

Don’t be surprised to see something like that.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:12 PM EST reply actions

Eddie was always a terrible fit for our team. WTF did they expect him to be a leader when he’s never been a vocal guy?. For team like Dallas or Utah he’s a good fit for the Nets he was just a overpaid hustle player. They just should have brought back Boki Nachbar for all the stuff they were asking Najera to do.

by MP3 on Jan 8, 2010 6:12 PM EST reply actions

Did I read that above article right?

T-Will slept during the shoot around before the Bucks game?

Can’t they just suspend him now and get it over with?

What a disappointment…

by Mike on Jan 8, 2010 6:12 PM EST reply actions

Boki is a horrible defender. Najera was a very good, very tough on ball defender. At the time Hollinger called it a horrible signing, citing the “mountain of data” suggesting power forwards over hte age of 32 go into a steep decline.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:14 PM EST reply actions

If common ground is the team priority for Yi and Brook, what plans exist to reintegrate CDR into the offense? Does CDR “idle” until the other key players find their way? What kind of player development strategy completely disables a team’s ability to compete?

by Jeff on Jan 8, 2010 6:14 PM EST reply actions

what is wrong with twill he is a bust. just like nate robinson he can be good but can be VERY BAD! that is why both of them of friends

by matt on Jan 8, 2010 6:16 PM EST reply actions

Good comment on Yi/Lopez situation, Dave. It’s strange that some fans feel that we have a black and white situation here—-can only develop one at the expense of the other. In fact it is not and shouldn’t be that way. Don’t we want ALL our nets to be quality players? Why do we have sacrifice any one of them? To make good players to work well together shows how good a coach is. I also agree that Devin is in a tough situation and he really has his hand full. I refuse to believe that he is quitting. His task may be a bit over his head now, but quitting, no. What fans could do now is to show their support instead of meaninglessly adding fuel to fire by taking side.

by bill on Jan 8, 2010 6:19 PM EST reply actions

I just realized something that makes me think this is a DONE DEAL: Dan Fegan, the agent, represents Rafer Alston (given his parole this week), Yi Jianlian, Courtney Lee, Jarvis Hayes, Eduardo Najera and KRIS HUMPHRIES.

I believe the Nets must have five Fegan clients on their roster at all times or he forecloses on Ratner’s mortgage.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:19 PM EST reply actions

@jeff
If you have two promising seven footers, one 21, the other 22, there can be no higher priority. CDR will be just fine.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:21 PM EST reply actions

It would be a nice gift to be rid of Najera. Kris Humphries should get plenty of playing time here. If he is productive, he may become an asset with some value. I tend to agree with NI that Dallas would not do this deal unless they were getting a draft pick or two. What else is their incentive?

by Chris2 on Jan 8, 2010 6:23 PM EST reply actions

I think Devin will be a much better player after the struggles he has gone thru this year. And I think that can be said for the young core. Particularly Brook and CDR.

If we get John Wall – Devin will once again be an All-Star caliber PG. We really need that added offensive threat on the perimeter. If Courtney Lee were knocking down shots – this season would be quite a bit different.

by Ryan243 on Jan 8, 2010 6:24 PM EST reply actions

@Anthony

I don’t think the Lakers will even accept the entire Nets team in exchange for KOBE :p

by kuljo on Jan 8, 2010 6:24 PM EST reply actions

@Ryan243

I agree with regards to Courtney. He is a big disappointment. He won’t be able to take us to the playoffs, but we won’t at least have this terrible record if he’s been knocking down shots.

by kuljo on Jan 8, 2010 6:27 PM EST reply actions

Does anyone understand why we took Chris Quinn if the Nets are trying to free-up roster spots? We have soooo many guards in the team already!

Is their goal this year really to irritate all the Nets Fans and hope that none of us sign-up for STH next year to allow all the New Yorkers to get all the good seats?

by kuljo on Jan 8, 2010 6:31 PM EST reply actions

@ Chris2

How do figure Humphries getting plenty of time with Yi getting the bulk of the minutes? Does Humphries play the 3?

by Mr. Big on Jan 8, 2010 6:32 PM EST reply actions

Marc Stein reported this morning on ESPN Dallas that the Mavs are trying to move Humphries…

Sources say the Mavs’ recent trade pursuits mostly have been end-of-the-roster discussions aimed at reducing their luxury-tax bill, primarily involving little-used reserve forward Kris Humphries.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:44 PM EST reply actions

I must say that Lee is a disappointment. He is definitely struggling with his shots now. I guess there is a big difference when someone is playing with a center like Howard and the rest of the Magic crew. So we don’t have to cry over spill milk about Ryan Anderson. And on a 3-32 team can eat any body up, players, coaches and fans alike. Feel sorry for Kiki because he really didn’t have to take this coaching job. The nets need a exceptional coach to pull us out of this mess now.

by bill on Jan 8, 2010 6:48 PM EST reply actions

@kuljo
I didn’t but perhaps it is all part of God’s (Fegan’s) plan.
He engineered the Alston buyout and signing with Miami, which needed to move Quinn so it could sign Alston and keep Arroyo beyond the guaranteed contract deadline.

He reps both Najera and Humphries. Here’s the full list of Fegan clients, most of whom will at some point play for the Nets…

http://hoopshype.com/agents/dan_fegan.htm

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:48 PM EST reply actions

Isn’t unfair to judge Najera’s contribution when he’s never been on the court? With the exception of the statistical case for heightened injury risk, it didn’t seem a bad idea to add a hustling, defensive veteran that could push the guys in practice and add meaningful game minutes.

by Oriel on Jan 8, 2010 6:48 PM EST reply actions

Stop everything until we get Yi to play like a starter. Stop Harris’ spontaneous breakdown plays for Yi. Stop Lopez, too. Stop CDR espcially. We have to get Yi to play. Maybe if he shoots enough of our shots and gets the most touches, he’ll want to pass better and defend a little. Please, tell me they will trade him for a PF who can defend, pass, rebound, get physical, AND score. Please tell me they are not just pissing everyone on the team off just to satisfy Yi and Kiki. KikiYi. YiKiki. OKiki won’t you play Yi won’t you won’t Yi won’t Yi play Yi IIIII Kiki. O kiki yi is so fine yi’s so fine he blows my mind hey YiKi play Yi yi. go Kiyi. O Yiki what a pity Yi dont understand Yi got to play defense unless Kiki is yi coach. O yiyi what a pity yi don’t play no d, it’s guys like you kiki…

by Yao on Jan 8, 2010 6:50 PM EST reply actions

His back is shot. He had surgery for a hernia and a wrist injury over the summer. He doesnt play in practice. He doesn’t get meaningful minutes. He is on a team which has gone into complete collapse and wants to play its young guys.

Humphries is 24 years old who has backed up Boozer in Utah, Bosh in Toronto and Nowitzki in Dallas.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 6:50 PM EST reply actions

Najera and S. Williams ($4.6 Mil) for Humphries and S. Williams ($5.3 Mil).

Both S. Williams are released. In this deal Dallas would save a good chunk of money being over the tax threshold.

I don’t know why but I really like Humphries (really don’t know to much about him). But when looking at his profile, 6’9" 235 lbs. good rebounder, strong upper body I think of Aaron Williams. I was a big fan of Aaron Williams and to have someone like that is nice (hopefully we will be good next year….)

by oligarch on Jan 8, 2010 7:45 PM EST reply actions

Dave D’s assessment on the Lopez/Yi situation is very good and fair. Lopez is someone the nets should and will keep. Yi’s development is equally encouraging. By the way, Yi’s stats is no.9 among all NBA PF at the moment, behind Dirk, Bosh, Boozer, Harrington, Amare, Z. Randolph, Laundry and Webster. Not bad company to be in. Certainly, Yi is far from being a finished product. But we can use someone like that in years to come, as a starter or backup. To make the twin towers work is the top priority because it will establish the identity that we long want. CDR may have to wait. I think it’s ok because he has enough drive to stay with it. Hopefully, the coaches can do a good job with Lee and T Will as well. We have the talents. It is so unfortunate that we are in this mess. It is so easy and pointless to accuse any individuals now.

by bill on Jan 8, 2010 8:00 PM EST reply actions

Houston is trying to trade for Bosh with hope that he will re-sign in order to play beside Yao next year in his home state of Texas.

Maybe Nets could be 3rd team in a deal since Houston doesn’t have expirings except for McGrady (too large at 22 million).

My guess is Toronto will wait until closer to the trade deadline, but Houston does seem to be a good fit for Bosh, besides Miami.

TWill’s response to why he isn’t getting minutes after sleeping through shootaround:
“we’re talking about PRactice”.

by jerry25 on Jan 8, 2010 9:23 PM EST reply actions

Yes Yi finally getting a break from Kiki. That’s what is all about developing. Winning will come later if we have the proper pieces in place. Right now no PG and an all star like Lebron or James. We have these two positons NETS will be a lot competetive. If we get a legitimate PF that would be really intimidating most likely championship caliber.
   Keep on developing CDR, Lee and Yi. Lopez is good enough to be a center much better than Laimbeer. Let’s say we get Wall on draft night, which I think much better than Jennings or Evans and then get Stoudemire or Bosh. If Johsnon joins or Anthony later then we have a championship team in themaking. Also we have a chance to get a good 2nd round draft. So my fellow fans just watch the NETS and look at the postive development of the young guys. Right now their offense needs to develope. Defense will follow which is most likely develope once they get familiar with opposing players. As far as defense experience and familiarity makes you a better defender.

by JuliusIrving on Jan 8, 2010 9:28 PM EST reply actions

Look at how well the nets are playing wihout Harris…lol

by Andy on Jan 8, 2010 9:55 PM EST reply actions

@ NI, so you seem to think it is a realistic possibility that we could get Chris Paul?????

That would be awesome. How about Harris, Lee, and our second rounder this year (plus any expirings to make it work)? You think they’d bite???

by Paul B on Jan 8, 2010 10:05 PM EST reply actions

@andy
exactly.

by ZHAS on Jan 8, 2010 10:21 PM EST reply actions

@ Paul B

We would certainly have to include our number 1 for this year, plus more. We’re talking about one of the top 5 players in the NBA and the best player at his position who is only 24 years old. For us to get Paul (which won’t happen), we would have to part with Harris, multiple picks including our first for this year, expirings, and maybe a good young player like Lee or Twill to make this deal happen.

by Jason on Jan 8, 2010 10:23 PM EST reply actions

that damn was for the loss

by Paul B on Jan 8, 2010 10:36 PM EST reply actions

@ Jason

I do not think he’d be that expensive, but basically me and you only disagree as to the draft pick… I would probably not part with our first pick this year… maybe next since with Paul we’d probably get a nice FA and make the playoffs.

From what I hear (don’t watch college ball), this year’s draft is too deep to deal that pick, plus it seems like once a player goes to his 2nd team, he always goes to a third eventually.

by Paul B on Jan 8, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions

kiki should be fired just for drafting another Williams (Terence) … rookie already in the doghouse decides to sleep thru shootaround…

by JohnY on Jan 8, 2010 10:44 PM EST reply actions

What is all this SILLINESS about this being KIKI’s team? He is the GM. Rod Thorn is the President of Basketball Operations. HE make all the final decisions…in conjunction with the Chairman’s Council, which includes Bruce Ratner, Vince Viola and Brett Yormark, aka the money guys.

by Net Income on Jan 8, 2010 11:25 PM EST reply actions

@Mr. Big

If the Nets trade for Humphries I would expect him to backup both Yi and Lopez, getting minutes ahead of Boone and Battie. I think he could get 20-25 minutes per night.

As far as TWill I am most worried about the maturity concerns. Sleeping through shootaround is not a good sign. Guys getting paid millions of dollars to play a kids game, you would hope that he would value his job enough to show up on time.

While Sean Williams had received little to no playing time in recent games with the NETS, I strongly believe this move will come back to haunt them. For reasons beyond me, the team woulld never simply give the guy a chance. Watch for some team to jump at the chance to sign him and let him flourish.

I also think we should consider keeping Shawne Williams, at least for a look to see if he has any skills. When he played, he was productive and I can think of a number of others on our team that should be cut prior to buying him out.
