Nets Buy Out Alston, Acquire Chris Quinn and Swap of Picks

The Nets and Rafer Alston reached an agreement on a buyout Tuesday. Alston accepted $2.1 million on the $3.05 million still owed him and will sign with the Heat. In a separate deal, the Nets acquired Chris Quinn, the Heat point guard and cash and and agreed to swap second round picks in 2010 and 2012, all for a trade exception. The Heat acquire the Nets 2010 second round pick, but it's protected from 31-50.

I saw this one coming. Its not that Alston cant help with team or any team..it just was not a fit for right now. Good Skip on your future team.

We did get something in return. A roster spot to do another deal, and you can bet one is in the works….stay tuned.

Although humphries would be a nice addition…hey if we are getting rid of najera.let’s party.

Do I smell some vanilla muscle coming our way? I hope so!

better be another deal….we could have easily gotten a second rounder for him…
by johnfried on Jan 5, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions
I agree with supernetsfan. Remember they needed to free up some space in order to get some deals done.

Wow! We needed skip! This was not a good move by the nets.
by Agent 0 on Jan 5, 2010 3:37 PM EST reply actions
Who knows it might be a bigger deal… But humpries Would be nice especially since we’re shipping najera
by Andy on Jan 5, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions
The thing that I will remember is Rafer losing control of the ball out of bounds coming up court with no defender in sight in game 1 against the TWolves. That ended up being the difference in the game, possibly. Thanks for leading the team to a record losing streak, Alston.
Hmmm, maybe his real mission was to get Frank fired. Nice job.

He also had a triple double. I wish him the best.
by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions
yeah, this alston waive better be setting up another deal – and involving najera. getting rid of najera would be a big plus.
by JohnY on Jan 5, 2010 3:48 PM EST reply actions
Getting rid of Najera would make today Christmas part 2. And I am really bummed that we could not get at least a 2nd round pick for Alston.
by Ryan243 on Jan 5, 2010 3:52 PM EST reply actions
Ooops I did not see the Chris Quinn/2012 2nd rounder for the trade exception. At least we were able to use it for a pick.
And I would be pretty happy if we keep Boone. I think he is a valuable piece to be brought back next season as a bench guy.

Getting rid of Najera >> Chris Quinn and a 2012 2nd rounder. I hope we are not done dealing.

by Ryan243 on Jan 5, 2010 4:01 PM EST reply actions
don’t know if we’d done dealing yet (most likely not), but just reading about Chris Quinn, he seems to have some potential. he’s not a complete scrub.

lol go to his player page… he doesn’t even has a picture of him playing
by Carlos on Jan 5, 2010 4:03 PM EST reply actions
Chris Quinn is NOT A COMPLETE SCRUB guys.
He is a 40%+ 3 point shooter.
He can nail the open jumpshot.
He’s averaging 5.1 points in 14 minutes this year.
Last year he averaged 8, 3 and 2 per game.
He’s only 25 years old. It’s not like getting a bag of potato chips. I hope we’re not done dealing, though…
by Jack on Jan 5, 2010 4:06 PM EST reply actions
Chris Quinn is a poor man’s Steve Blake methinks.
by Chris2 on Jan 5, 2010 4:06 PM EST reply actions
Quinn is not that bad. He can hit outside shots. From a cost/youth standpoint is an upgrade over Alston who really never fit here. Lets move Battie for a pick, Najera for Humprhies! Get it done!
by Ryan243 on Jan 5, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions
Think this deal is in anyway related to Humprhies? Maybe Chris Quinn to Dallas for Shawne Williams alongside the Najera for Humphries deal? Does that make ANY sense?
Perhaps Dallas wanted a player at that specific price point and the only people we could offer at that cost were OUR Sean Williams and Courtney Lee. I don’t see Dallas wanting SWAT and the Nets are obviously not giving up Courtney Lee.
I don’t know anything though. Just speculating.

by Andy on Jan 5, 2010 4:15 PM EST reply actions
Even though they were listed as separate transactions, I have to believe we acquired Quinn and 2nd rounder from Miami for trade exception and Rafer Alston.
In other words I believe it was “one” deal.
Alston is expected to sign with Miami.
Sort of like the V.C. RA deal with Orlando.
Listed as separate but basically one deal.

OMFG, Chris Quinn is straight Scarface, but without the scar and the face. I can’t imagine the dealing is done. Miami wanted Alston, they freed up a roster spot. We now have a pick and a cheap player. I believe that Quinn or the pick will be the missing piece to get something done this week. Humphries deal isn’t dead.

by Mike on Jan 5, 2010 4:37 PM EST reply actions
I don’t think he is really part of the “now” or “long term” plans of this franchise. Maybe he is another chip in another deal? At least we were able to turn a trade exception into a future draft pick. At least we are stockpiling assets and getting rid of guys with no purpose on this team.

Draft picks, schmafft picks. This isnt the NFL where you can get an impact player in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds. Plus, with the way this team drafts Im not even sure if they could be successfull with 10 consectutive #1 picks.

I am not a fan of the VC trade (then or now) BUT the true impact of this deal will not be known for a few more years. It freed up lots of cap space and gives us hope in free agency, etc. But I am not crazy about the Ryan for Lee swap – but lets see how Lee turns out 2 years from now depending on what vision Kiki and Rod have/committed to.

To the commenter saying we are like the D league team now because of Quinn and possibility of Humphries… Quinn wont and shouldn’t play. Its wiser to have Quinn not play then a good guy like Alston. And Humphries is a decent backup big man, key word, back up. Have you not watched any of the Mav’s games this year?

Why is Hunphries better than Boone? His FT is twice Boone’s (57% vs 27%), but overall his stats are pretty poor. Another stiff.
by John at the Jersey Shore on Jan 5, 2010 5:47 PM EST reply actions
2nd rounders are worth $$$$, and can be used in trades, and moving up in the draft. In terms of the odds of us getting a serviceable player in the 2nd, its a.) extremely difficult and b.) our management doesn’t have the greatest ability to spot diamonds in the rough. Prior to CDR, we drafted Illic, Adams, Drejer, and Slay in the 2nd—-oh, and we sold the draft rights to Kyle Korver somewhere in there as well…
by brian on Jan 5, 2010 5:55 PM EST reply actions
Check his minutes played and realize the guy isnt going to get the touches that Dwight Howard gets. 5 and 4 in 12 minutes shooting close to 50% aint terrible and he shot ft’s a 79% last year.

So here’s what apparently happened…
—The Nets tried to trade Alston but couldn’t get anything they wanted.
—He agreed to give up $1 million in what was owed to him.
—The Nets got an undetermined amount of cash from Miami, thus adding to the savings on this. I assume the amount is no greater than the $1.07 million owed to Quinn.
—The Nets used the smaller of their two trade exceptions from the VC trade, the $1.22 million exception that equaled Ryan Anderson’s salary. They retain the larger one…$3.73 million.
—The Nets now have 10 draft picks: two firsts and a second in 2010; a first and two seconds in 2011; two firsts and two seconds in 2012. That’s the most of any team.
—IF the cash the Nets received does amount to $1 million, then the Nets saved a net of about $1.5 million, the difference between what they saved from Alston’s buyout and the cash from Miami minus what’s owed Quinn.
—The Nets are now be under the salary cap, I think. In terms of cap space, they saved more than $3 million…the difference between Alston’s reconfigured salary (about $4.2 million) and Quinn’s salary ($1.07 million.) Since the Nets were just above the cap, a savings of $3 million would put them below the cap by that amount.

@John at the Jersey Shore
I was finally waiting for someone to say something! I think people have the tendancy to think the grass is greener on the other side.
KHumphries is Boone 2.0
He has never impressed and has had some potential. But if he was a solid player, he would have found time no matter who is ahead of him (Bosh, Boozer etc).

by t-bone on Jan 5, 2010 6:13 PM EST reply actions
Actually it says a “protected 2nd round pick”. How can a 2nd round pick be protected? Why would we give up that pick? It’ll be basically a late first rounder. Someone tell me this is false.
by t-bone on Jan 5, 2010 6:18 PM EST reply actions
heavily protected…meaning it stays with the Nets unless somehow they make the playoffs…meaningless.

by djheavyduty on Jan 5, 2010 6:20 PM EST reply actions
you guys are missing something. By my calculations, the Nets are about $3 million under the CAP, meaning they can take on a contract that large without having to send a player back.
How much does Humphries make this year?
by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 6:21 PM EST reply actions
2.9 million. . .a better offensive player than boone, who is a scratch for tonight. hmmmm
by hackensackhack on Jan 5, 2010 6:35 PM EST reply actions
I said this before and I’ll say it again. If we tell Utah that we will take Kirilenko but the Knicks 1st rounder as well in exchange for The Dallas 1st rounder, 1 of Lee or Twill and Hassel/Hayes/Battie…I certainly think they’ll do it (they’re desperately trying to get under the luxury tax). Without a doubt we know AK47 will be playing for the Nets when Pokhorov takes over so we might as well do it now and get something for it.
by sebastian nj on Jan 5, 2010 6:36 PM EST reply actions
I have the nets about $1 million under the Cap but it does allow them for some flex room for trades. Humphries per Hoopshype.com is making $3.2 Mil this year and has a player option for next year for $3.2 Mil (Najera’s contract is due for $2.8 Mil next year but runs another year). I found hoopshype salaries to be pretty reliable when comparing to other reports.
Finally some moves by the Nets. The Nets really need to look at their roster and unload guys (if possible) that have no future with the team, and getting second rounders would be more then great. Nets need to get rid of Najera and it would be great for a contract that does not run through next year (it would be tough as teams seem to be really tight on contract lengths more then ever) but Humphries and his contract wouldn’t be to bad of a trade off.

Mike, what if we package Najera and one of our 5 2nd round picks for a player with 1 year remaining on his contract. The 3 million on Najera’s contract wont hurt us next year except for the fact that he’s useless. He cant help us on the court, thats why I think we need to deal him.

If this is the move we were going to do, I Think we should have waited until All-Star break to deal Alston. I’m sure his value would have increased because that’s really when teams either push to make the playoffs or to solidify themselves as championship contenders. A team short on point guards would have more likely given us a better offer.
by JJ22 on Jan 5, 2010 6:56 PM EST reply actions
If we could trade Najera and a 2nd rounder for an expiring contract, I would do that and so would the nets (just the money savings would make them do it).
Eh.. about Najera’s contract, I want it off the books. 2010 free agency is still up in the air. It is doubtful that lebron, wade etc. will go somewhere else, and Joe Johnson might be the best option out there if that….. Regardless, the Nets might get the #1 pick and have the right free agents land (thus it is important to be under the cap much as possible).

So, if the Nets 2nd rounder in 2010 is not conveyed to Miami, do they get the 2011 2nd round pick or no pick? The reporting hasn’t been the best on the details of this deal.

The Nets pick is protected 31-50 meaning unless the Nets finish with the NBA’s 10th best record or better, the pick remains with the Nets. There is carryover til 2011 or 2012. If there had been, it would have been mentioned in the official press release.
The Heat pick is unprotected. No matter where the Heat finish in 2011-12, the Nets get it.
Al Iannazzone makes the point that the Nets were able to use one of the two trade exceptions from the Carter deal to gain a player, $600,000 in cash and a second round pick. Normally, a team lets those smaller trade exceptions expire. The Nets also got to keep the larger exception they gained in the Carter deal.
So the Vince Carter trade is now Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson for Courtney Lee, Tony Battie, Chris Quinn, a second round pick in 2012, a $3.73 million trade exception and $600,000 in cash. In other words, this deal enhanced the Carter deal.

good riddance.
And no the Thorn is not a bad GM… we are keeping our second rounder due to it being protected and gaining one from the heat. Picks and a true 3rd string>>> an upset veteran that wanted to play over the better Dooling. plus im pretty sure we also got cash
Wasnt a blockbuster transaction, but it did indeed help us. we got nice value.

I like Chris Quinn, but this move is really not major. He prob. won’t be with the team next year. The only point guard we should talk about adding is not in the league. Hes at Kentucky.

No need to hate on Alston folks. Skip to my Lou is not a horrible player. His FG% may be somewhat low, but he is a solid play at point. He reminds me of Gary Payton in terms of his playmaking ability. I’m sure if the Nets could they would lose every game for the rest of the season to just make sure they have the most ping pong balls… and we will somehow still end up with pick #4.
