Yahoo: Nets Seeking Kris Humphries

Yahoo! reports the Nets have been trying to trade Eduardo Najera to Dallas for Kris Humphries and the troubled Shawne Williams. He'd be bought out. Problem is that the Nets need to clear a roster spot. They had hoped to open one by trading Josh Boone to Denver for Joey Graham's non-guaranteed contract but those talks failed and now all of it is "on life support". The Post reported Tuesday it's "stone cold dead".

Makes no sense. The trade w/ Dallas Spears talks about doesnt work. It’d work if you include Boone (so why would try to move him to Denver?) or remove Wiliams (who he says the Nets would buy out).

by Andrés on Jan 5, 2010 7:23 AM EST reply actions

maybe Dallas wanted us to take Williams off their hands with one of our TEs in a separated deal?

anyways, if this is true, Im happy we didnt give Josh away just for clearing a roster spot. We could still get Humphries, just remove Shawne Williams (Humphries for Eddie straight up) or throw in Swat there. Cut Swat and trade Eddie for Humphries and Shawne for a TE? Skip for Humphries?

by Andrés on Jan 5, 2010 7:45 AM EST reply actions

Maybe…Humphries makes $2.9 million, with a team option for another $2.9 million next season. Williams, on the last year of his rookie contract, makes $2,416,067. Najera makes only $3.0 million this year and $2.75 million next.

HOWEVER, the Nets have a $3.73 million trade option which could factor in. Lots of ways you can use that trade option in this deal. You could divide the deal into two pieces with one piece being traded for Najera and the other being traded for a swap of second round picks at some future date or Christian Drejer’s draft rights, etc.

It seems to me that Dallas is requiring the Nets to take Williams, who isn’t even with the team. The Nets obviously don’t want him. That would explain wanting cash in return for him. The Nets tried for Humphries last season when he was with the Raptors. He is only 24. They like him.

Also Boone makes $2,056,968 in the last year of his rookie contract, while Graham makes $854,389. So how does that work?

Nets would have to do the Boone/Graham deal today, since tomorrow Graham’s non-guaranteed deal becomes fully guaranteed.

by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 7:46 AM EST reply actions

Humphries is a good player, definetly a good choice to back up Brook for a few min each game.

by jerrod on Jan 5, 2010 8:21 AM EST reply actions

I like humphries. A backup center/pf with some hustle and emotion.

by superb on Jan 5, 2010 8:32 AM EST reply actions

Back up Yi as well.

This, like the Alston/Battie offer to the Knicks, is exactly what the Nets should be doing…getting value for their veteran players.

If the Nets had succeeded (still succeed?) in doing this deal, it would be essentially a wash in terms of cap space. Next season, Najera makes $3 million, Humphries $2.9 million, a savings of $100,000. The Nets would also a team option on Humphries in 2011-12 at the same $2.9 million, $150,000 more than what they would pay to Najera.

This is now the third trade story we’ve seen in four days. Sounds like they are active.

by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 8:32 AM EST reply actions

Wait a minute, according to Storyteller’s website, Najera has two more years left in his contract, apart from this year while Humphries only has one, apart from this year.

by blah on Jan 5, 2010 8:47 AM EST reply actions

The nets havn’t been the luckiest of teams but thay have been doing the right things in the front office.

Call your local environmental officer and ask when the next household hazardous waste collection is scheduled for.

by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 9:25 AM EST reply actions

I like Kris Humphries a lot. I think he’d bring us everything we were hoping for when we signed Najera.

If Denver doesn’t want Boone and we can’t clear up that roster spot, let’s send Dallas Jarvis Hayes too. Why not? What better purpose could he serve here? 9 more points a game? If I remember correctly, Jarvis Hayes is one of the better players in the league under Mark Cubans super-genius calculations.

Hey, is there ANY chance that CDR and Shawne Williams were friends during their Freshman year at Memphis and he could come here and behave? I mean it was only pot. Oh, and a stolen handgun. But that was his friend. Besides, do you know how hard it is to buy an unregistered handgun that’s NOT stolen these days?

Thoughts?

by Dirt on Jan 5, 2010 9:27 AM EST reply actions

By the way, this could be an active day for trades. Players with non-guaranteed deals have to be cut by the end of the day or they become fully guaranteed. Those are nice pieces to move.

by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 9:28 AM EST reply actions

I like Humpries. Get it done

I also here that the Wizards are about to have a fire sale. I wonder if the Nets will try to acquire Butler??

by Mr. Dollae Bills on Jan 5, 2010 9:29 AM EST reply actions

Najera for Humphries would be a no brainer. Najera is the worst, he is using the Nets as his post career pension fund. Humphries would be pretty good in a backup role on this team. Salaries are a wash and I could see Humphries increasing his trade value on the Nets since he would get more minutes than he does in Dallas. Then the Nets could possibly trade him again next offseason if they need additional cap space.

by Chris2 on Jan 5, 2010 9:33 AM EST reply actions

@Dirt
Re Shawne Williams, I believe you forgot how he had a fugitive from a murder charge living with him. There may also be a league rule on the number of Williams you can have on your roster.

I agree re: Humphries. He has played for three teams where he played back up to an all-star: Boozer in Utah, Bosh in Toronto, Nowitzki in Dallas. He turns 25 later this season.

Cuban might also want a pick. He traded his second round pick this year and next for Shawne Williams. (He has no picks this year). He may want to recoup on that investment. No way I would give him the Nets second round pick this year but the Warriors second round pick next year was a gift in the reconfigured Marcus Williams deal.

by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 9:34 AM EST reply actions

@Mr. Dollar Bill
Butler turns 30 in a few weeks. He is on the downside and has BIG BUCKS on his deal the next two years. No way.

Let he among us who has not harbored a fugitive from a murder charge in our home cast the first stone.

Najera and Boone for Humphries and S.Williams? I’d do that deal.

by mcbubba on Jan 5, 2010 9:50 AM EST reply actions

Another troubled guy named Williams? Are we collecting them?

by mt57 on Jan 5, 2010 9:53 AM EST reply actions

Honestly, Najera, Swat hasn’t done a thing for the Nets. Any trade would be fine. Boone needs to go also eventhough he’s a nice guy. The Nets lose nothing.

by Seeker on Jan 5, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think the Mavs would do this deal unless we take Williams off their hands. Otherwise, why would they trade Humphries for Najera? kris is younger and much useful, and Najera’s deal is one year longer. They want us to rid them of Shawne so they save some money. But we need to clear up a roster space. I’m all for getting Humphries, but giving Josh away would be stupid. Plus, like NI noted, Boone for Graham doesn’t work. Why couldn’t just cut some of our garbage players instead of trading away a decent player for nothing? Yeah, I know, Ratner ain’t spending the money. Prokhorov can’t come soon enough.

by Andrés on Jan 5, 2010 10:01 AM EST reply actions

Can’t we figure out a way to move Alston for a pick now to clear up a spot? Or dump our own Sean Williams? I like Humphries but I also like the slow, yet steady, progress Boone has made, and I think there are other guys we should try to move before him.

by JB on Jan 5, 2010 10:11 AM EST reply actions

@ JB

Agreed!

by Andrés on Jan 5, 2010 10:30 AM EST reply actions

This deal isnt a big deal to me. One thing is if they want this guy instead of looking for an expiring may be anothe sign. Everyone is thinking about 2010. Like I have said before, Durant in 2011 is more realistic to me.

by SIC on Jan 5, 2010 10:30 AM EST reply actions

What they mention about the Jazz in that article is pretty interesting. I wonder if they’d be willing to give up Millsap if we took Kerilenko and his contract off their hands and included one of Courtney Lee, CDR or T-Will with some expiring contracts. We’d be saving them a TON of money.

With Kiki busy coaching, who’s minding the phones, Thorn?

All by himself?

Why don’t the Nets hire some of you guys to help out.

Net Income would make a terrific assistant G.M.

He never sleeps, is a hard worker, loves the Nets, and is probably as smart or smarter then most other G.M’s in the NBA.

And he will probably work for scale…

by Mike on Jan 5, 2010 10:34 AM EST reply actions

the nets don’t care about humphries or shwill. this move is to get rid of boone and najera’s contracts to get even more under the cap next year.

if humphries surprises grest! if not, don’t re-sign him.

they should waive swill. he won’t play anyways.

No. It’s not to get more under the cap. As NI pointed out, it is a $100,000 difference. Josh Boone is not signed through next season.

I believe this more than all the other rumors b/c there is little salary involved. The idea of taking on salary is ridiculous. Nets are in cheap mode. But Humprhies gives them strength and power inside at a cheap figure – and would get us out of Najera’s contract.

by dex on Jan 5, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions

Their garbage for our garbage. What’s the purpose? I guess more cap space and a live body for Najera but why would the Mavs do it? I say we throw Swat in there (reunite with Kidd) if that could be done. Maybe Kidd could sell Cuban on Swat. Najera and Swat for Humphries and Shawne. Does that work?

by Mr. Big on Jan 5, 2010 11:16 AM EST reply actions

Net Income,

Good point about Caron Butler. It looks like his numbers have dipped this year as well.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 5, 2010 11:18 AM EST reply actions

What Najera brings is work ethic and professionalism. He is one of the vets (when healthy) who works hard in practice and is ready to go when called upon(with what little talent he has). He is a guy who pushes the kids to try harder and is reportedly a good locker room influence. Guys like him are good to have on your roster as your 11th – 15th roster spot.

by 4K on Jan 5, 2010 11:33 AM EST reply actions

Najera has definite value for a playoff team. I can see why Dallas would want him. He’s wasted on the Nets since they want to play their young guys.

Najera has Brett Favre/Eddie House syndrome. He’s crap on a team that I like but will be much better on his next team.

by dex on Jan 5, 2010 11:54 AM EST reply actions

“Najera has definite value for a playoff team.”

He sure does. Negative value.

by TWilliAM on Jan 5, 2010 12:20 PM EST reply actions

Najera’s scrappiness and hustle can help a playoff team with 5-10 minutes off the bench.

by dex on Jan 5, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

Assuming he can get off the bench without hurting something (doubtful), age and injuries have clearly robbed him of what little ability he ever had.

This is one of the worst FA signings of the Thorn era.

by TWilliAM on Jan 5, 2010 1:01 PM EST reply actions

This trade would be a wash over the next two years, even if the Nets exercised the team option on Humphries. Najera is owed $3 million next season, Humphries $2.9 milllion. If the Nets exercise their option on him for 2011-12, he would get $2.9 million. Najera will make $2.75 million in 2011-12. So the Nets would, if they exercise his option, be liable (net) for an additional $50,000 over two years.

The Mavs were high on him this preseason. He averaged 13 ppg when Dirk wasn’t playing a lot of minutes.

But if you ask me who I think the Nets will trade first, I would pick Alston…and soon. Two DNP’s and an “under the weather” absence from practice? Hellllo.

by Net Income on Jan 5, 2010 1:04 PM EST reply actions

Alston is a goner… No doubt. after he’s gone we should trade najera. I would like to make a trade for butler but he might hurt our chances of gettif a top 4 pick. I feel the nets have goods intentions just don t disappoint!

by Andy on Jan 5, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Butler has a very reasonable contract I believe…

by Andy on Jan 5, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions

butler is owed 10.8 next yr. No thanks he can keep his toothpick in his mouth in washington

by Bruce on Jan 5, 2010 1:24 PM EST reply actions

I keep trying to think where Alston will wind up. I really don’t see a suitable team for him. All the teams with something to play for have a young, ready, willing and able point guard (or Eddie House…or Jason Williams). See: Ty Lawson, Jeff Teague, George Hill, JJ Barea, Daniel Gibson, Rodrique Beaubois, Goran Dragic.

It looks like his value is going to be his expiring contract. Unless we want Mo Peterson or DeShawn Stevenson (We don’t), I don’t see what we could get with Alston as bait. Jason Maxiell? A move to take on more salary would most likely not be done before Porkhorov takes over. Is Detroit even looking to cut costs? Who knows.

by Dirt on Jan 5, 2010 1:34 PM EST reply actions

Najera would have been better if he wasn’t injured a lot. His strengths are obviously hustle d and energy. Problem is you need a more potent offense to really let him loose and be effective.

However, it seems like it may take a long time for him to really come back and be in the shape he was. At this point, he really is not of game value to the Nets. Trading him is a great idea.

I really like Boone, but I can see that if they trade him now while he is playing well they will get more in return. I do think Boone can fit in to their long-term plans though.

Alston makes tons of sense for the Knicks as Duhon is not strong enough. He makes sense for teams with only only PG Toronto, Sixers, Celtics, Cavs… .the list goes on and on. Any playoff team could use his punch, I just hope the Nets get something in return that we can use in the future. Orlando would even be a good place, again.

by geo on Jan 5, 2010 3:07 PM EST reply actions

@ Carlos

Powell is clueless. He says Proky doesn’t have “the track record to spend”? Didn’t he spend in Europe? The guy blew 20k on lunch. As an owner who knows and played the game imo this guy will spend to win if it kills him. In his summary he states the Knicks will be a better place for FA cuz its a better location which may be true but he doesn’t take into account which team is more likely to improve (according to him the Nets have the better supporting cast and to me the better GM in Thorn) and put a winner on the court which will lore the better FAs more than the location of the teams.

That really sucks. I figured Alston was our 1 veteran player who we could turn into a draft pick from a playoff team. The fact that we had to buy him out sucks.

At least we hopefully will turn Najera into Humphries before the day is over. Najera was the WORST free agent signing in Nets history when considering money, length of contract, games played and overall impact….

And I hope we keep Boone. I think he has played well and I think he can be a good piece for us in the future.

by Ryan243 on Jan 5, 2010 3:49 PM EST reply actions

@Nets Income, According to storytellers Kris has a player option for next year. What happens when we buy him out cap wise? http://www.storytellerscontracts.info/resources/09-10salaries.htm

Or did I read it wrong and only Shawne Williams is gonna get bought out. What’s gonna happen with Kris then? Supposedly, Kris’ option is more than Najera’s salary for next year. Why decrease the available cap space (even though it’s only 200k)?

In that article it pretty much said the biggest thing holding up the deal was the Nets not having enough roster space. Now that we switched Alston with Quinn, can’t we just waive Quinn??? That would open up the spot we need. I like Humphries but as most here i’m not too familiar with him.

I like this deal. At least Humphries has potential.

by John at the Jersey Shore on Jan 5, 2010 5:29 PM EST reply actions

Actually, much better FT% then Boone 57% vs, 27%! Huge upgrade. But Humphreis is not about potential, he’s been in the league like 6 years. Another stiff.

by John at the Jersey Shore on Jan 5, 2010 5:34 PM EST reply actions

He does have potential because despite being in the league for 6 years he’s still only 24 years old and only recently has he begun to impress. I’m not saying he has the potential to be a stud but he has potential to grow more as a player and perhaps develope into a really nice role player. He may also end up being a complete stiff. At least there’s a possibility for it unlike with Najera.
