Nets Interested in Diaw?

In his weekly chat, Chris Sheridan writes the Nets are "peddling guys like Simmons, Najera, Boone and Battie" but that wouldn't be enough to pry Boris Diaw from the Bobcats. He adds the Nets won't be "dangling any of its young keepers on rookie contracts (T.Williams, CDR) until the sale to Prokorov is or isn't approved." Diaw is owed $9 million next year, more than a third of the Nets' cap space. Seems odd.

Take najera and maybe…but why and how? it does seem odd.

I don’t wanna add anyone on this team all year. I don’t wanna risk making the #1 pick worse. Nets should make trades on draft night just like the celtics did 3 years ago.. If we don’t get the 1 or the 2 pick then I wanna trade it for an allstar.

by christos on Jan 4, 2010 1:51 PM EST reply actions

Makes no sense. Diaw is having an awful year. Looked out of shape when the Nets beat the Bobcats.

by Net Income on Jan 4, 2010 1:52 PM EST reply actions

Read the article and don’t think Sheridan suggests the Nets were pursuing Diaw. He is answering a question from a Bobcat fan about how they cd swap Diaw for a backup 4. Sheridan says the Nets are shopping the obvious candidates but does not say that the Nets offered any of them for Diaw and I agree with NI that no one in his right mind would take Diaw with that contract.

by mt57 on Jan 4, 2010 1:58 PM EST reply actions

ever since SJax arrived in CHA he’s been overshadowed. Diaw is a good facililitator and SJax is as well but too much of a ball hog.

Nice player to help get this offense flowing better. Not sure if he’s worth the $$$ though.

by Whoop dee damn doo on Jan 4, 2010 1:59 PM EST reply actions

It’s a poorly constructed response, but basically, what I took from it was, if Charlotte want a PF, the Nets are shopping several of them and Diaw could work in return but the Nets would have offer something beyond Battie to get him. Why does he bring up Diaw? I dont know. Then, suddenly, he takes a right turn and says the Nets aren’t offering any of the kids on rookie contracts, specifically mentioning TWill (who the Bobcats WERE interested in) and CDR, neither of whom are big men and who would be superfluous on the swingman-heavy Bobcats. Maybe the logic is that to get Diaw, who I cant see the Nets being interested in, the Nets would have to give up Battie and either TWill or CDR. Finally, he throws in a line about whether Prokhorov will be approved. Huh?

by Net Income on Jan 4, 2010 2:11 PM EST reply actions

Most of those writers on ESPN are Knicks fans and want Nets to fail.

by Tony on Jan 4, 2010 2:18 PM EST reply actions

I think he is sayin that the nets can’t trade non expriring contracts until proky becomes owner…but yeah it’s a weird response. Diaw just doesn’t fit…

I would take my chances with Caron butler…but on draft day.

Harris
lee/cdr
butler
favors/yi
brook

Diaw makes sense at SF, but his contract is crappy. He would help with like Whoop there it is said as a facilitator, but isnt that what Twill is suppose to become.

I dont get this but I dont trust this guy especially after he said that if you take away Lebron from the Cavs the Knicks is a better team.

by SIC on Jan 4, 2010 2:37 PM EST reply actions

I fully understand the logic of the article.

Since Diaw’s first name is “Boris” they are hoping Proky jumps at the chance to get a fellow comrade.

by Mike on Jan 4, 2010 2:41 PM EST reply actions

even kiki is not that stupid…so they plan for 2010 and make moves towards that goal and throw everything away for “8-time all-star” boris diaw…

by jirohkanzaki on Jan 4, 2010 2:53 PM EST reply actions

I actually don’t think this is bad trade, najera will under contract next year at 4 plus. You lose 5 million in cap 2010 but I highly doubt the Nets are going to acquire 2 big time Free Agents. Lets not kid ourselves.

by Seeker on Jan 4, 2010 3:06 PM EST reply actions

Diaw was playing hurt when we saw him.

by kg on Jan 4, 2010 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Prokhorov isn’t approved yet? Thought that was done.

Diaw seems depressed on the Bobcats, but he was sort of inconsistent on the Suns too.

Wouldn’t be a good idea to give up too much for Diaw really, unless we could unload Alston, Najera, and S. Williams. Please get rid of those guys!

by NiceBull on Jan 4, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Yes, this is wierd. Let’s not even mention that Diaw is French and we know what Prokhy thinks about the French!

The only thought I have is that the Nets are following Net Income’s “Summer of 2011 Plan” rather than the commonly assumed Summer of 2010 plan.

by A.S. on Jan 4, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions

I dont think any of the ESPN BBall writers are Knicks fans. They are pretty much all Celtics fan.

by dj on Jan 4, 2010 4:24 PM EST reply actions

Diaw would be a good idea if we can ship Alston and Najera for him. We would go only a few millions (4mil I think) over our projected capspace, and he’s a good piece when healthy.

by Carlos on Jan 4, 2010 4:32 PM EST reply actions

This would be a great deal for the Nets. Reason is they are going to be $26 to $28 million under the cap. A max player, LeBron or otherwise is going to get 16 to 18, leaving around 10 million. Who in the free agent class can be had for that that plays small forward or power. Diaw is versatile and international, something the Nets love. Thorn also likes big players and Diaw can play the two. It also gives them a stronger lineup to woo a free agent, and shows the league they are no longer in cost cutting tank the season move. We would still finish with Minnesoata at the bottom of the league for the draft.

Oh yeah,, wasn’t he close with a guy named Stoudamire???

by supernetsfan on Jan 4, 2010 4:40 PM EST reply actions

If they wanna get someone from the Bobcats they should better try going for G.Wallace !!!

Would be a little more difficult, of course, but that would be the real deal !!! (especially to attract big time free agents)

by Gyniko on Jan 4, 2010 4:48 PM EST reply actions

Bloated salary. Bloated reputation. Bloated player. Is Diaw really that much better than TWILL that you would take TWILL’s minutes away? No way.

by Jay on Jan 4, 2010 4:51 PM EST reply actions

@supernetsfan
If the deal was Battie, Najera and something else (cash, second round pick), then I would do it, but the Bobcats wouldn’t.

If you replaced Battie with Boone, it might be more appealing to the Bobcats, but it wouldn’t match for salary purposes. Then, it gets more complicated. Saving $3 million off Najera’s salary while taking on Diaw’s $9 million is a little risky, but I might do it. Diaw is only 27, I was shocked to learn, but he has a rep of not being in shape, playing lackadaisically if not in an ideal situation.

This doesnt even warrant conversation. Just a stupid, made up rumor that helps nobody.

by mattsimo on Jan 4, 2010 5:10 PM EST reply actions

Unless we are going to save cap space in 2010, no trades please.

I feel the longer we wait, the better are chances are…

There’s a sucker born every minute…

by Mike on Jan 4, 2010 5:28 PM EST reply actions

Boy, Sheridan’s English is atrocious. I hope his information is more proficient than his use of our language. Diaw would be a great addition in the Thorn way: he plays multiple positions. I think he is an upgrade at 3 or 4.

by Yao on Jan 4, 2010 6:24 PM EST reply actions

To “whoop dee… etc.”: Call Stephen Jackson a ballhog all you want, but Charlotte is winning more games WITH him than without him.

by Gerard Himself on Jan 4, 2010 6:27 PM EST reply actions

This doesn’t make any sense

We need a legitimate starting SF but Diaw and his contract aren’t the answer.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 4, 2010 6:33 PM EST reply actions

Diaw is another bonehead… If he wasn’t the Bobcats wouldn’t be shopping him…

by Mike on Jan 4, 2010 6:54 PM EST reply actions

if you want to make a change for just the sake of making a change because you have nothing else better to do then go ahead and trade for diaw but for a thinking person first thing that comes to mind is OVERPAID…

by jirohkanzaki on Jan 4, 2010 7:02 PM EST reply actions

$9M per year til 2011-2012 for diaw simply isn’t smart…it’s like the najera mistake only twice as worse…

by jirohkanzaki on Jan 4, 2010 7:08 PM EST reply actions

Only makes sense if we give najera & simmons for diaw, but cmon 1st tmac, then, the bulls PF, now….. diaw!!!

whos next ? grant hill ????

by Emilio on Jan 4, 2010 7:09 PM EST reply actions

Foolish mistake to take on this headache. We are going to free up money next year by waiting. Instead of spending foolish money to get Diaw. Spend the nine million wisely to get a few high draft picks and get young talent in the draft. That is spending the correct way along with getting young talent that can make a difference right away. It makes no sense at all in getting Diaw. As for Najera, his contract is not guaranteed. They can let him go. There to is another +3 million to used wisely towards the draft. 2010 Draft: Monroe/Aldrich/Johnson/Henry/Wall Why not get them all and pick up a few championships along the way. Free agency is not the answer for this current product known as the Nets.

hope this doesnt happen.

I was just watching the Cincy-Pitt game on ESPN. If the Nets want to make a marketing move – it would be wise to buy a 2nd round pick (I think ours will be too high) and take a flyer on Lance Stephenson. He is Brooklyn’s prodigal son – more successful than both Marbury and Telfair at Lincoln.

I have read that he is a bit of a headcase and his dad is super controlling – much of which led to him going to Cincy rather than a bigger name school.

Either way – he can run the point or play off the ball, has that playground athleticism to get to the hoop at will and carries a big name around Brooklyn. If I am the Nets I take a flyer on him in the 2nd round (I am sure he is a 1 and done – but background issues should land him in the 2nd round).

If he pans out – we could have our 2nd unit PG to pair with Lee and CDR to give us a formidable 1-3 rotation in that 2nd unit (assuming we get Wall and he plays the 2 with DH at the 1 – where TWill would become the starting 3 to provide defense). And at the very least – he is a big draw in anticipation of Brooklyn.

by Ryan243 on Jan 4, 2010 8:06 PM EST reply actions

And trading for Diaw makes no sense. He would take minutes from both CDR and TWill…..

by Ryan243 on Jan 4, 2010 8:06 PM EST reply actions

No thanks to Diaw. Maybe in the summer if we can’t use our cap space on anything better. Because then it would be seen as a one year rental before again swinging for the fences in 2011.

Diaw makes the same as Devin Harris.

“Diaw makes the same as Devin Harris.”

so do a lot of players. what’s the point?

by jirohkanzaki on Jan 4, 2010 9:09 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think we need Diaw at this point. We have solid starting 5 young units.

CDR is developing, so is Lee, Yi.

Diaw can play from 2 to 4, we don’t need him to occupy the playing time. If he can come off the bench, maybe it’s good.

by jarkid on Jan 4, 2010 9:28 PM EST reply actions

@Ryan243
I’ve thought about the Nets getting Lance Stephenson as well, but its probably too risky. That kid is probably better off getting out of Brooklyn cuz there will be way too many hanger-ons once he has some cash in his pocket. I also don’t think he’s a point guard, he seems more like a 2 or 3 to me.

I really like Devin Ebanks from West Virginia. He’s 6’9 and is a long athletic SF that can shoot, slash, and rebound. It seems like the game comes real easy for him. The Nets, to me, are too small and need more length at the wing positions. He’s projected to go between 8 and 12, but maybe we can buy up with our Dallas pick and some cash.

Getting the worst record in the NBA is the worst thing that could happen to us. If that happens then we can kiss Wall goodbye since the team with the worst record never ever wins the number 1 pick

Agreed. If we could get Diaw for those guys (maybe throw in a 2nd rounder too), I’d consider it, as we would be dumping Eddie’s contract and taking on just $6M. Diaw is a good player, I like him and I think we need that kind of a combo forward who can pass the basketball, but he’s overpaid. Like Chris2 says Id rather consider him in the summer if we can’t use our cap space on anyone better (same goes for AK).
