Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

With Open Wallet, Coaching Options Widen

There's no salary cap for coaches. Although David Stern has told owners to be more frugal in signing coaches, that warning may fall on deaf ears in New Jersey. Mitch Lawrence's report that Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson are on the Nets' short list is likely to be followed by similar rumors as Mikhail Prokhorov gets closer to approval as Nets owner. Lawrence says Prokhorov wants to make "a big splash".

I like Jeff Van Gundy, he’s a coach that believes it all starts with defense. And if we’re gonna be better, it all starts with defense. Mark Jackson is a pretty knowledgable guy as well.

JVG please.

Stan Van Gundy please.

I really want to see Mark Jackson give coaching a try. He always seems to say the things I want to hear when announcing…. mostly related to bone head PG decisions, so I think he could REALLY help Harris if we still have him, or Wall if we get him.

Edd:

Perhaps we should throw loads of money at Phil jackson? Or maybe get a way for Popovich to come here?

Perhaps we should get Doc Rivers to resign in Boston and then pay him a truckload to come here and see if he can do anything without a HoF Big Three?

by rightclue on Jan 31, 2010 10:34 AM EST reply actions

van gundy would be great

by ChrisGNetfan on Jan 31, 2010 10:40 AM EST reply actions

haha rightclue is right. A lot of coaches have “not won anything”, but since there are 30 teams and only one championship, that doesn’t make a coach bad. So apparetnly by claiming that he “not won anything” Edd means titles, because other than that, JVG was a pretty damn good coach.

by Gerard Himself on Jan 31, 2010 10:54 AM EST reply actions

There’s no way Phil Jackson would come here…unless of course we have Lebron. Phil Jackson refuses to coach at places he has to build from the ground up. If there’s a superstar already here like an MJ or a Kobe, then he’d be more inclined to think about it. I’d be way more impressed if he coached less talented players to victory rather than following superstars to victory, but it is what it is.

by KFranchise on Jan 31, 2010 10:58 AM EST reply actions

if we’re to get john wall then the best coach to help him develop out there would b byron scott. however i would like to c erik snow as a coach and i think he can get the job done.

by tu vieja on Jan 31, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

I think rightclue was being sarcastic, but Phil Jackson could actually be out of LA in the near future. Things are not looking that good between the relationship of Phil Jackson/Jeannie Buss with Jerry Buss/Jim Buss. And rightfully so, Jeannie Buss has worked her ass of for the Lakers but daddy Buss is gonna hand over the reins to Jim Buss.

Still, larger chance he’ll retire.

I hope we can pry away good guys like Mike Budenholzer or Tom Thibodeau for assistant coaches.

by muwu on Jan 31, 2010 11:12 AM EST reply actions

I am just talking of the coach being credible and believable with players. Xs and Os is not enough. That’s for the assistant coaches. A coach can at sometimes be intimidating and how can do that? By having done it. Remember we are dealing with elite athletes in the NBA. Look at how Byron Scott been effective. Why? Because he is a winner. That why to me Bill Lambeer is what the Nets need.

by Edd on Jan 31, 2010 11:35 AM EST reply actions

JVG sounds about right to me. But if not, please get someone with head coaching experience. No more first timers. I like Mark but as a broadcaster. We have NO clue how he will be as a coach.

Are we willing to have more “tryouts” with a team thats coming off one of the worst season’s in the NBA for a franchise…EVER?

by Whoop dee damn doo on Jan 31, 2010 11:52 AM EST reply actions

Eric Snow puts me to sleep on NBATV.

I’m not sure I would want to experiment taking Mark Jackson for his first coaching assignment. It probably would work out much better than Kiki’s first try, but I’d rather see him as an assistant first, which won’t happen.

The only factual news in Mitch Lawrence’s story is that JVG is on list, which every one knows already. JVG is no better than Frank, but at least he would get more player respect because he is a famous TV personality to the young players.

Lawrence suggests that Nets wouldn’t consider Avery Johnson because it would upset Devin Harris? However, is this just the opinion of sports writers or coming from Thorn at the present time? I think its subjective as Harris’ D has been terrible and I don’t see why Devin should dictate who is the coach.
Afterall, Devin could be traded if Nets get Wall and Turner appears to be a better passer also!

I’m sure Avery will be interviewed and there would be a private get together with Devin.

by jerry25 on Jan 31, 2010 11:56 AM EST reply actions

what about JVG with Mark Jackson as his main assistant….Why should Jackson get a coaching job right out of the broadcasting booth? There are other assisant coaches that have paid their dues and deserve to be coaches before Jackson…..Not that I don’t think he is smart….I just think he would get a head coaching job quicker as a proven commodity first….

by johnfried on Jan 31, 2010 12:11 PM EST reply actions

“were betta then that!” mark jackson!

by JerseyRich on Jan 31, 2010 12:20 PM EST reply actions

I’ve said it since day 1.
Our next coach will be handpicked by one of the big free agents. If we fail at that, then I can see JVG here.

by ronnie on Jan 31, 2010 12:37 PM EST reply actions

@ronnie:
Hopefully the plan will be to have a coach Before seeing any free agents. And the biggest free agents would be DLee and RGay (unless Nets can get AI#2 before deadline).

Haven’t we seen enough resentment with Kiki over Yi, to want to hand pick coaches to satisfy one player?

by drmagoo on Jan 31, 2010 1:00 PM EST reply actions

JVG win games, he has proven track record with Knicks and Rockets. He also didn’t ride on Jason Kidd.

by malorkayel on Jan 31, 2010 1:11 PM EST reply actions

People resented Frank by favoring Harris?

by malorkayel on Jan 31, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

yeah, like malorkayel said: JVG has a proven track record. You can say a lot about that guy, but his teams always played hard for him. If you’re saying Byron Scott is more credible than JVG, sorry man, but you just don’t get it.
By Edd’s logic, a guy like Rick Adelman hasn’t accomplished anything either. But Adelman is one of the greatest coaches in the game, just hasn’t won a championship.

by Gerard Himself on Jan 31, 2010 1:15 PM EST reply actions

@ Edd “JVG has not won anything.”

I agree. He had Yao Ming and Tracy Mcgrady on his team and couldn’t even take them to the Western Finals. (Correct me if i’m wrong) My choice would be The Czar. He has been commentating on this team for over 2 years and by now understands the teams strengths and weaknesses. He is also a Jersey native and has gained a lot of respect throughout the league.

by Hex on Jan 31, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions

JVG did everything he could to build up Yao. Tmac is Tmac, hard to figure out what you get each game. Also, JVG knows when to leave a team, unlike Frank.

Czar is a good coach too, I would be fine with either.

by malorkayel on Jan 31, 2010 1:29 PM EST reply actions

JVG has Patrick Ewing and Yao Ming. Do you think these guys have anything to do about winning games? Jackson has O’neal and Jordan. And now Stan has Superman.

by Edd on Jan 31, 2010 1:32 PM EST reply actions

KFranchise:

I was being sarcastic. No worries. Sarcasm is not the easiest of things to read in text.

Anyway, Jackson DID come back when the Lakers were just coming off of a 34 win season.

All they had was Kobe (who was on a monster scoring binge that year) and Odom as sure things. THey also had SMUSH PARKER, KWAME BROWN, and a rookie Bynum.

Maybe PJax didn’t go to a 9 win team… but still.. it’s not like we went to a title contender

by rightclue on Jan 31, 2010 1:36 PM EST reply actions

how about Jvg, Ewing and Jackson as his assistants!

talk about making a splash!

ewing and jackson would be great mentors to our young players.

by superb on Jan 31, 2010 2:06 PM EST reply actions

@ Edd Byron Scott has a limited playbook according to most effective at first but then teams start to find away around it. This being attributed to (partly) his two good seasons in new jersey and then the drop off in production in 04. And the emergences of NH in 08 playoffs and then recent drop off the next year and this year. The basic opinion I see expressed a lot is that he has some good plays but can’t see to adjust them when coaches figure his plays out.

Furthermore if your talking about getting players to respond (ie; they’d be more responsive if the person was an ex player) well Scott is the wrong candidate. He rubbed eveyone here up the wrong way and the team esp Kidd quit on him. He then learnt his mistake in NO to a degree about not being liked by the star PG and had a pretty good relationship with Paul. Unfortunately the rest of the team didn’t like him. Nuff said.

by Shea23 on Jan 31, 2010 2:11 PM EST reply actions

The Czar is definately somone I would like to see coach but I’d miss his commentry a lot.

by Shea23 on Jan 31, 2010 2:22 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to see

JVG or George Karl
as head coach

Mark Jackson or Pat Ewing (or both)
as assistant coaches.

by Jack Handy on Jan 31, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions

Byron Scott would not be considered by the Nets, so just drop it.

by JohnY on Jan 31, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions

I totally agree with Edd on Mark Jackson or Bill Laimbeer…..

by NetFan48 on Jan 31, 2010 2:33 PM EST reply actions

I know Mark Jackson wants to coach but has no experience yet. He should be one of our assistants.

Love the idea of JVG with Ewing and Jackson as assistants. Proky could throw $$$$$$$$$ at all three of them. Young players would have to respect and play hard for that staff. Jackson to mentor the young guards and Ewing to develop Brook.

by Mikeslovak on Jan 31, 2010 2:42 PM EST reply actions

Adelman is good. He was able to leverage Walton into an NBA championship. He manage Houston into a decent team without Ming or MacGrady. Lambeer won NBA title as a player and he is a good shooter. He won WNBA title for whatever it’s worth.

by Edd on Jan 31, 2010 2:51 PM EST reply actions

@rightclue

I actually re-read it and could tell it was sarcastic though I wasn’t sure because Phil Jackson actually could be out of LA soon. Either way the Nets do need a good and credible coach who the players will listen to and respect and who can turn this around!!!

by KFranchise on Jan 31, 2010 3:43 PM EST reply actions

If Adelman is on the market I think he’d be a nice fit. I’m not high on George Karl but I’d take him too if he could be lured away from Denver. Personally, I think JVG is the best choice for a team this young.

by DanThePsycho on Jan 31, 2010 4:10 PM EST reply actions

Van Gundy is exactly what we need. No one will dog it with him around

by supernetsfan on Jan 31, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions

Van Gundy all the way!!!

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 31, 2010 5:17 PM EST reply actions

I’ll never forget when the Knicks traded Oakley for Camby and JVG played Larry Johnson over Camby at PF and switched Camby to center. SMALL BALL. Then he goes to Hou. has Yao and Tmac still can’t win. Adelman comes in without either has has them playing as good as ever. That’s why JVG is on TV. He got the Opie desease. Great x & os guy but can’t recognize talent and likes to go small. If we have established talent I’d go with Karl or Adelman. If we’re young I like Laimbeer, Thibodeau or Czar and out of college Self or Izzo.

by Mr. Big on Jan 31, 2010 5:30 PM EST reply actions

^Dead on.
This team needs a better offense and defense. Van Gundy like Frank is all defense that’s why Thorn likes him. He’s no better than Frank dealing with rookies and the team’s success will depend on young players.
Maurice Cheeks would be a good option.

by universal on Jan 31, 2010 5:56 PM EST reply actions

Anyone think that guys like Marc Jackson, Van Gundy, and Ewing will get bonus points for their Knicks affiliations? If the plan is to fill an arena in Brooklyn by, among other things, eroding the Knick fan base, it seems plausible.

by Paul B on Jan 31, 2010 6:34 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, that’s a great, hire a bunch of former KNICKS; then we’ll be from under the Knicks shadow. LOL

by Eugene on Jan 31, 2010 6:43 PM EST reply actions

What’s this a Knicks re-union?

by Edd on Jan 31, 2010 7:28 PM EST reply actions

What ever happened with the story at the beginning of the summer that we may be bringing Bill Walton in to mentor Lopez ? I’d like to see this and he can work with Yi also….Make him our Big Man Coach….

by NetFan48 on Jan 31, 2010 8:51 PM EST reply actions

Don’t expect exciting or spectacular Nets games if we have Van Gundy. The Nets will be competitive but never win championship under him. Also half the team will be gone for sure, Harris, CDR, Hump…
