Offense on the Fly

It's no secret the Nets have been hurting--the eight players who were expected to make up the rotation have missed 107 games. It's also no secret that the team's new coach is feeling his way, having never coached a game before last month. So despite all the individual talent and potential, it's not something a few practices are going to help. In effect, the Nets are restarting from scratch.

CDR talks too much…
Yeah, we might be 1,000 miles behind, but lets just concentrate on getting the car started for now.

Give kiki some credits, this team is playing better step by step.
by jarkid on Jan 3, 2010 8:40 PM EST reply actions
I cant give Kiki any credit. The team got healthier. The Nets played something like five games straight with only eight players healthy. NO team can win like that.
by Net Income on Jan 3, 2010 8:45 PM EST reply actions
For any human being in kiki’s position to step down from his position and coach this team and turn them around like this deserves alot of credit. Game by Game you can see this team vastly improving playing hard and getting better and better. Alot of respect to Kiki, alot of GM’s would not have done this.
by mikee21 on Jan 3, 2010 8:47 PM EST reply actions
Kiki is a good man trying to do a good job, a job he didn’t want.
If I was a betting man, I say Proky keeps Kiki and fires Thorn.
by Mike on Jan 3, 2010 8:55 PM EST reply actions
Rehire Lawrence Frank. He’s a good coach, and now that the team is healthy lets see what happens.
by Julian on Jan 3, 2010 9:12 PM EST reply actions
Proky keeps Thorn at a lower salary through 2010-2011 season and Rod accepts because he wants to be around to see Nets on rise. Thorn’s legacy is important.
At same time Proky puts Kiki back in position of GM (after finding a new coach) and President in waiting.
Just what does Thorn do on an average day anyway?
Its not like he’s making lots of calls when only limited trades are possible. Does he study stats and watch film?
Kiki gets credit for bringing along Del Harris and if Yi becomes an all around acceptable PF and if TWill is deserving to be a starter by the end of the year.
If only Kiki could get someone to teach Boone how to shoot free throws under game conditions, that would be something.

@Mike CDR is a Real Passionate Player That Actually WANTS 2 win…CAN’T say the same 4 ANY1 else on this Roster..They Need Someone 2 step up and be a LEADER..and By the way..yess I Agree, CDR talks a lot (Not 2 Much) But Hey…The KID TALKS LOUDEST With his PLAY
by The GM on Jan 3, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions
Blazers are without Aldridge, Oden, and Pryzibiila.. they are still WINNING.
Although the injuries shutted down the Nets, but it’s really pathetic to start with 0-18, if we could have won the first game against wolves when most were healthy, we won’t be that bad…
by jarkid on Jan 3, 2010 9:48 PM EST reply actions
@mike
CDR talks but he supports what he says with how he plays. He is one of our best players and he deserves the right to say what he wants and establish himself as one of the leaders on this team.

CDR is an undistinguished second year player who had a great first 12 minutes against Cleveland, and then vanished.
Everybody gives this wild card a pass, while they attack Harris, Lee, Lopez and Yi.
I hope the best for CDR but personally I don’t see the potential greatness, like all those G.M’s including the Nets G.M., that passed him up, over and over again, in lasts years draft.
I hope I’m wrong and he becomes the “star” he thinks, and all his fans believe he’s destined to be.
I just wish he would just shut up, and put up.
by Mike on Jan 3, 2010 10:22 PM EST reply actions
I thought the part about Lopez shooting the least SPG for a starter over the last 7 was a telling statistic.
by mattsimo on Jan 3, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions
CDR is a natural leader, he likes pressure situations and plays with great energy. This team needs a voice like his, and I really think it’s helping the team right now.
CDR is only going to get better too, he still has his moments of young mistakes- but you have to like this kids fire and will to win.
by NiceBull on Jan 3, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions
Since when did CDR say that he’s destined to be a star? And most of the people here (fans) think the best he’ll become is a good 6th man.
We’ll see what happens, but at the very least he was the steal of last year’s draft.
by Antoine on Jan 3, 2010 10:30 PM EST reply actions
If CDR becomes the “voice” of the Nets, I’m buying ear plugs.
Everything that comes out of his mouth, whispers loudly, I’m the man and my teammates stink…
by Mike on Jan 3, 2010 10:33 PM EST reply actions
All this talk won’t matter when Proky takes the reins.
He is a man of action not words.
I wish I could be more that kind of man…
by Mike on Jan 3, 2010 10:37 PM EST reply actions
He is one of the steals of the draft. The Nets have two of them: Lopez and CDR. Mario Chalmers also qualifies.
by Net Income on Jan 3, 2010 10:37 PM EST reply actions
Mike, this guy put up 16 strong against Lebron. 18 if the refs would have called that goaltend which was a goaltend. Come on he has been consistent since game 1 what more can you ask for. Then he put the blame on his self (via Twitter) for not contributing in the second half that’s real leadership and respectable you have to be kidding me. If you don’t see the potential in this kid he’s only gonna get better not worse. The hardest working Net, If you feel this way about CD-R I don’t wanna hear your opinion on the other guys Geeeessss!
by mikee21 on Jan 3, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions
I agree, CDR was a steal for sure. He has a real fire inside that is good for this team too.
by NiceBull on Jan 3, 2010 10:43 PM EST reply actions
@ Mike
Maybe you could present your complaint about CDR “talking too much” to the sports writers who seek and write about his comments. Doubt if CDR is calling them to request interviews.
CDR is not an “undistinguished second year player” either. He is currently ranked 5th in scoring and 3rd in minutes played per game among ALL sophomore players. He is not a “wild card”.
From your comments, one could conclude that you don’t really want CDR to be successful, but the good thing is that you and your unfounded comnments can’t affect CDR’s current or future success.
Go CDR!! Go Nets!!
by Jeff on Jan 3, 2010 10:44 PM EST reply actions
I mean, think about the complacency and malaise that affected this team the last few years. CDR is just the kind of guy this team needs, somebody who really hates to lose and takes it very personally. This kid backs it up with his effort too, and I really think he is one of the brightest spots for the Nets.
by NiceBull on Jan 3, 2010 10:47 PM EST reply actions
Like I said, I hope CDR shuts my big mouth, but so far he’s all talk. Come to think of it, he’s been all talk since he was drafted lower then he rightfully deserved, according to him.
I have been watching basketball for over 40 years now, and young guys with the biggest mouths usually fail.
CDR got a big mouth… Shut up and play…
by Mike on Jan 3, 2010 10:51 PM EST reply actions
CDR was a draft steal – but you do not earn minutes by how well you play relative to your draft position.
CDR is a NBA starter/big-minute-rotation quality player – but his skills are average. There are lots of 6’7" average defender, average shooter slashers in the league.
CDR appears/sounds like a very passionate guy. This is what sets him apart and is what will get him minutes – passion/energy/winning attitude. His constant talking (frequently before thinking) is a sign of immaturity that limits his ability to be a true leader in a “professional” league. But let him talk. I think it is what separates him from the mountain of other average shooting, average defending 6 foot something slashers sitting on NBA benches, D-League rosters and overseas payrolls.
PS Yi has much more upside – he may never be a star, but if he cathes CDRs fire and keeps it burning look out.
by Jay on Jan 3, 2010 11:00 PM EST reply actions
I want the Nets to be successful. If that includes CDR, Yi, Lopez, Harris… Lebron, great… But no one man is greater then the team.
When that happens, I’m gone… And so is the team…

Just how Arenas was a second round steal I think we got ours in CD-R. He’s passionate about the game, comes down hard on himself after a RARE poor performance. This guy said he wasn’t doing nothing for new years except go to the gym and work on his game (via twitter) that sounds like a passionate B-ball player to me.

CDR could be a little TOO intense. Could rub people the wrong way. Like kobe before he had the realization that not being an asshole to his teammates made people play better than barking at them all the time.
And as talented as he is, he still throws so many lazy passes that get picked off easily. And takes way too many shots to score his points. His last few games – 16 pts on 14 shot attempts, 17 on 15 attempts, 20 on 20 attempts. And only 6 free throw attempts the last 3 games.
Just saying, you better make sure you fix yourself first before totally mouthing off to everyone else if you want them to not ignore you or get pissed at you

I would consider CDR the best player right now on this team… i don’t give a crap if he has a big mouth or not… Without him, we cannot win… Many would say it’s Lopez but i think, right now, it’s CDR, Lopez has more upside but i could be wrong, CDR can still nab that potential away from him.
CDR is the Nets BEST player right now, PERIOD. Somebody needs to know basketball to understand who clearly is the best player and has the most upside. You dont need 40 or 50 years of watching basketball to know that.
by TaUBeaVis on Jan 4, 2010 12:43 AM EST reply actions
Back to Kiki. Clueless. I agree with NI that it is only that the Nets are healthy that they are playing better. But really, are they playing better? I see individuals playing better and I see the bench with some punch, but the team has taken steps back, especially defensively. I hope our new owner cleans house.
by Yao on Jan 4, 2010 6:49 AM EST reply actions
CDR also has one defined skill that sets him apart from other slashers. That is the ability to finish in a myriad of ways through people, over people, and between people. Which is one reason why the “average nba slasher” is not putting up his numbers or efficiency. His skills are improving game by game with a better mid-range game and better ball-handling as well.
by kg on Jan 4, 2010 7:13 AM EST reply actions
I disagree with the comments on the coaching. The rotations seem much crisper and make more sense than in the past couple of years. There is a minimum small ball, which is making a difference in the paint although rebounding is still a problem. The Nets are not getting killed by 3 point shots anymore. Lopez isn’t gunning from the perimeter anymore. That is all I have time for now but Frank firing was a good thing.
by Ispartan on Jan 4, 2010 7:54 AM EST reply actions
Another point, the players are better utilized offensively now. Yi, obviously, has been getting the ball where he can be effective. Screens are being run for Lee which have made him more effective. Lopez has been used more effectively as a fulcrum, loved the screen-handoffs to Lee and Harris.
by Ispartan on Jan 4, 2010 9:48 AM EST reply actions
CDR is one of the most efficient players on this team, period.
Nets fans are used to players not caring about what happens on the court for so long that when we finally land one, a steal at that, they complain about him nonstop yet he shows up every time he steps on the floor. It’s sad.

I wish this Nets team was filled with “CDR’s”, the type player who goes all out to win.
by Jeff on Jan 4, 2010 10:48 AM EST reply actions
I dont know if Kiki deserves credit. One thing I want to know is has Kiki dropped Frank’s BS offensive and defensive strategies. That is why I read these articles. The last statement above – In effect, the nets are starting from scratch. I want to know if this is true. If it is, it is about time. I dont want any reminisce of any of Franks systems.

@kg
@Mr. Dollar Bill
I like CDR – but for his passion/energy not for his skills which are average in the NBA. As for his being more efficient – compare him to other “big 2 small 3 slasher type players” in the East:
Take out the clearly better players: Lebron, Bosch, Granger, Vince, Iguodala, Pierce and Stephen Jackson/Gerald Wallace.
Then look at the stats of the rest. Is CDR better then Deng in Chicago, Beasley in Miami, Butler in Washington? Not at this point in his career. Is CDR better then Chandler in NY, Crawford in Atlanta, Stuckey in Detroit, Mbah a Moute in Milwaukee? I think yes. Even if I have some of the players wrong (is Beasley the right Miami player?) it is hard to see CDR being in the top half of this group.
Great steal in the draft. Good guy to have on a team. Solid future in the league. Average skills delivering average efficiency. I do think if he channeled his energy into a sixth man role in the future when the NETS are a competitive team that he will carve out a great niche in the NBA. Better to be a great niche player than an average everyday player if you ask me (or Ben Gordon and agent after his new contract).
Same logic with TWILL – become a defensive stopper who can fill in at the 1, 2 and 3 spots. Do not try and become the all around Lebron very light, but rather the young strong aggressive focused niche stopper with high efficiency limited offense matchup problem creater (Bruce Bowen type).

One more thing that this team able to erase are those stupid TURNOVERS… esp. those effortless passes back in Frank’s era… those passes on top of the court, while watching it you clearly see it coming, developing to a ridiculous TO. Damn! i’m glad we got over it… To me, right now, it’s not really about losing or winning but justs to see they are competing and not just give away the game so easily esp. those lopsided passes…
Wasn’t it that this was what most fans were expecting from the start of the season? A team competing? And not commit stupid mistakes over and over again like those turnover passes?
I dont get you guys?!!
