Nets Drop Chance for First Winning Streak

The Nets' best chance of the season at a winning streak fell short when they lost a late lead to the Wizards at the Izod Center Friday night. Led by a fast start from Courtney Lee, the Nets led by as many as 12 early in the second quarter, but it was a one-point game at halftime. They had a three-point lead with five minutes to go in the game, but lost it when they went seven straight possessions without a point. Brook Lopez ended the drought with a layup to tie the game with 13 seconds left, but Earl Boykins hit a jumper with 0.4 left and Jarvis Hayes' desperation try at the buzzer didn't come close. Washington shot just 42 percent from the field, but grabbed 15 offensive boards. Lee led the Nets with 19 points--only two in the second half, while Lopez added 17 points and eight rebounds.

Sigh… we GOT KILLED by BOYKINS…

This is the time I miss Devin Harris, maybe he can cope with Boykins in the running pace.

by jarkid on Jan 29, 2010 10:35 PM EST reply actions

The destiny is quite bad, I always had a premonition that we will lose or get killed.

by jarkid on Jan 29, 2010 10:36 PM EST reply actions

Will they win two in a row this season?

by diehardNFFLbarnone on Jan 29, 2010 10:36 PM EST reply actions

Why does god hate us?
I dont know why we didnt pull away from this with a win, Yi costed us the lead.

Just one of those years.

Sigh… I can’t see them winning 9 games this season.

by jarkid on Jan 29, 2010 10:38 PM EST reply actions

close game mann , lopez and Yi missed freethrows which coulda won us the game, little things like that is what we need , CLEE was puttin in work,

by BrS1 on Jan 29, 2010 10:38 PM EST reply actions

we played well we were up by 12 and i thought it was gonna be another blowout. boykins killed us is harris coming back soon. only thing i like about harris is his speed, dooling is better pg. YI SUCKS!!! and i bet u next game lee will suck haha cant wait till july 1

by matt on Jan 29, 2010 10:39 PM EST reply actions

The Nets should’ve won this game. I cant believe a 5’5" guy made us lose.

by Andrew on Jan 29, 2010 10:40 PM EST reply actions

Hump is no savior. What’s his FG% today, 1-9? And so many fouls and TO! CDr played a good game, not scoring a lot, but grabbbed a lot of rebounds. Lee was on fire in the 1st quarter, but still a good game for him. B Lo and Yi were so-so, but both missed critical FT.

by bill on Jan 29, 2010 10:40 PM EST reply actions

Damn it… we need an All-Star Devin Harris…..damn it. This is tough one to swallow.

Don’t worry guys, we’ll win another one in 10 games. We shall finish the season 7-75 and be HAPPY about it too.

LETS GO YI!!!!!
LETS GO NETS!!!!!!

by Jim on Jan 29, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions

That last play was comical at best. What Kiki should have done is put Twill (CH43 out)in the game with 0.4 sec left. Then with CDR taking the ball inbounds, you set a double screen with Dooling first and TWILL second. He’d also send Lee to the left corner as a decoy. Dooling would try to pop up for a midrange J or a Three (Still decoy) while Twill goes around Lopez who’s standing at the free throw line, towards the basket to score on an alley-hoop dunk. We wouldn’t have won, but we would go to overtime.

by KJV on Jan 29, 2010 10:45 PM EST reply actions

i hate these type of losses. the nets miss VC right here. he was outstanding in late game situations like this. time and time again he would hit those clutch shots

LOL, don’t say Go Yi… I am pissed off on it…

by jarkid on Jan 29, 2010 10:46 PM EST reply actions

At least they were competitive, and it went down to the wire. Not a bad loss, and a great shot by Boykins.

by NiceBull on Jan 29, 2010 10:46 PM EST reply actions

@BrS1

Dont blame on the few freethrow in the 3rd quarter..Nets were leading by 3 or 4points in the 4th quarter with about 5 mins to go..but the Nets didnt score went on a drought with turnovers… at the end with about 19 second left..boykan kill ya with a jumper..

Yi didnt even play the whole 4th quarter… you still find ways to blame yi and lopez ..lolz funny…

by Akara on Jan 29, 2010 10:46 PM EST reply actions

YI has to provide more energy when he comes in the game.

upsetting loss but i will take it compared to how we were losing earlier.

by superb on Jan 29, 2010 10:48 PM EST reply actions

from tonight’s game, it clearly shows what humphries is really capable of. combine hump’s d and yi’s a, then we get what we really want.
ps. i think brook’s words really does affect yi’s play, i never seen yi posted up in the paint ever since that incident

by Robert on Jan 29, 2010 10:48 PM EST reply actions

ugh. little earl boykins.

by VC3 on Jan 29, 2010 10:48 PM EST reply actions

More terrible defense on that last play.

They were supposed to send Boykins left — FAIL.
The defender needs to fight through the pick — FAIL.
Ballgame – FAIL.

They played pretty good defense through the game, and then last play – breakdown. It’s so frustrating.

And scoring 13 points in the 4th quarter. Terrible.

You have to love the overall effort tonite. And even though hump didn’t shoot well I love the effort. Him and brook are developing nice chemistry. And twill keeps developing. I think he is our pg of future. His court vision is fantastic.

by ryan243 on Jan 29, 2010 10:58 PM EST reply actions

Was that really a 3 second call on Brook when CDR hit that short floater late in the 4th. I rewound it several times and there was no possible way that was 3seconds. The announcers said it was called 3 seconds, but could that have been a different call?

by pawley on Jan 29, 2010 11:00 PM EST reply actions

I said months ago we that we should have signed Earl Boykins before he signed with Washington. He is a great little guy scorer with guts! He could have been on our side tonight.

Again, TERRENCE should have been on the floor more!

by JustinNJ on Jan 29, 2010 11:01 PM EST reply actions

Did anyone notice that Hump doesn’t like passing the ball to yi? e.g that two on one fast break with yi ended with an offensive foul on himself? what hell was he thinking? I think he is a little too thrilled from last game

by Joe on Jan 29, 2010 11:01 PM EST reply actions

This games told us a few things…

1) Brook was struggling against again Haywood. Yes, I said HAYWOOND! It will take a long long time for Brook to reach Dwight Howard’s level. The problem is he thinks he is already at the All Star Level!

2) Congratulation to Yi Haters!!! Yi didn’t play at 4th qtr. Instead Humphries played the entire 4th qtr. His stats? 1/8, 3 boards, 1 ast, 5 PF, 1 steal, 4 TO in 26 mins.

3) Lee… No way we are going to trade him. I would rather trade Devin.

4) Twill… not bad. He should go to the Dunk Contest!!!

by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 29, 2010 11:01 PM EST reply actions

This was just a very unfortunate game. It had to be this game when the free throws roll out, when they actually matter…and also that late basket by CDR that was waved off because of a 3-second violation…?!?!

by Antoine on Jan 29, 2010 11:02 PM EST reply actions

And as for Courtney Lee, he’ll always have a seemingly breakout game where he scores big, but then goes on a stretch of 20 quiet games.

sigh… WE need De-Vin Har-ris !

you are right.

by jarkid on Jan 29, 2010 11:08 PM EST reply actions

Hump? His court vision? He hardly pass the damn ball. This is one of those guy who is trying to build his stats in every possible way for better contract in the futher. He should have never took that many shots in the first place!!!

Instead, CDR, TWill and even Jarvis should have mroe shots than he does…

by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 29, 2010 11:09 PM EST reply actions

Well, Devin didn’t play and Yi didn’t play in the 4th. Can’t blame them. Oh yea, Frank didn’t coach. And they didn’t play small ball. Can’t use those excuses. Could it just be that this team sucks no matter who is on the court? I think so. The Wall watch continues…

by supreme on Jan 29, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions

Well, the good side is there may be more pressure for Thorn to make some trade before deadline, even if it means picking up someone with another year left on his contract.

There are going to be lots of players available to move
Question is would Rod accept a solution that includes giving a draft pick and plan to save cap space for 2011.

Hayes isn’t doing much. Wish there was some interest.
CDR is no SF.

After the draft there may be an excess of guards, because Dooling is a keeper, especially if the 2011 plan becomes reality.

by jerry25 on Jan 29, 2010 11:12 PM EST reply actions

Remind me lastnight’s game,SUNS VS MAVS.Amare got bench off at the tth quarter,so did Yi today.
Well,Maybe the Rumor is true,Yi goes to the SUNS for Amare join the 4-41.Then Yi will get Nash, and Amare get a biggggg contract.Good for the both.

by Kael on Jan 29, 2010 11:13 PM EST reply actions

CDR did a gret job on Butler. CDR needs more ISOS!!!!

by rknine on Jan 29, 2010 11:15 PM EST reply actions

Can’t beleive you are still blaming Yi…. His stats was +5 at 4/9 shooting. How about D??? A. Jamison is 3/13. Even if Yi was only on him half of Jamison’s playing time; Yi still have done a pretty decent job tonight.

But go ahead, blame Yi, trade him to Warrior or some other teams as I would rather see him in a different uniform.

Twill not in dunk contest is silly. But maybe snub is good for him and ultimately us. And even if we luck out and get wall I think they could be our starting backcourt of future. And maybe get sherron Collins as backup in 2nd round

humphries played alright guys…he was pretty agressive through out the game…
but he shouldn’t be shooting the ball at all..garbage buckets are the only ones he can get…
this guy is a moose…but only for about 15 mins at a time…he becomes a liability quickly as u can see the nets score like 14 pts in the 4th quarter.

you gotta stop bashing Yi..he played a decent game tonight.

its not much better then Yi’s #’s.

by netsball on Jan 29, 2010 11:40 PM EST reply actions

I have mentioned before, Hump is a good rotation play but shouldn’t be in a offensive role.

As for Brook have better chemistry w Hump than Yi. I really don’t know what to say. To be honest, I actually thinks that Brook is very immature but not as immature as CDR. Both of them need to grow up as they are the core of this team…

And I also think Dooling is the best fit as a team leader.

by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 29, 2010 11:41 PM EST reply actions

Just in case no one noticed , nice pass from all-star cdr to lopez on the block! Right at his ankles. Someone tell this malcontent that brook is 7ft tall, throw it up!!!!

by frank c on Jan 29, 2010 11:42 PM EST reply actions

Dont blame yi or Hump..its the coach decision..u live and die by it..

by Akara on Jan 29, 2010 11:51 PM EST reply actions

@Robert. I posted before that what Lopes said affected YI a lot. Some guys start to say Lopes has better chemistry with Hump. I totally agree. This is all about the culture difference. I bet if YI is not from China, Lopes dare not to say anything because he can fight back. YI’s culture prevents him from fighting back. Congratuation to Lopes, another all-star performance, HOHO. He got all the low post space.

Now, YI takes all the blames. when Nets wins, YI has no credits. When Nets got beat, it is all YI’s fault. When he plays bad, it all his fault. When he plays good, it is still his fault because he makse Lopes bad.

Poor guy. Better not in Nets uniform ASAP.

Once again its simple logic and dumb GONETS! Coaching..Keep CDR involved we WIN. PERIOD. The coach even sat C Lee for no reason.. that’s insane! Once again, CDR played lockdown defense on a very high caliber player at his overmatched SF position.. This guy can play D! Who else played a lick of D 2nite? Hmm..I’ll w8..and speaking of “one dimensional” how this kid grab 9REBOUNDS?? Great job coaching and going to Jarvis, Keyon (who’s startin 2 play like Devo) and Hump who already has surpassed CDR in fg attempts every game..Howd CDR almost OUTREBOUND the “future..the twin towers”? And on his last possesion, he hits the go ahead basket, 2 be waived off…had this guy got the ball..we WIN….I’d bet, he’s gonna have a pretty good NBA career… whether as a Net or elsewhere

@NetsNEtsNEts! when was the last time YI took a charge like humphries did? And IF Yi stopped being aggressive because Brook said “I am adjusting to having another post player” then he is a pansy and needs to man up. I Really hope that’s not your excuse, and your excuse makes Yi out to be immature. I Was thrilled to have humphries in there because we need defensive stops not long jumpers.

by Sparklespice on Jan 30, 2010 12:31 AM EST reply actions

Dump Hump! He stinks. Where was Yi in the 4th quarter? That is when he puts up his best stats, when he warms up. If Yi plays instead of Humpty Dumpty Nets win.

@THE GM!
CDR looked like a complete ball hog out there. He dribbled for ever and sometimes he would make the ill-advised shots. He palyed good defense, but man he needs to learn how to play in a system.

@Sparklespice Brook looked like a goofball out there 2nite, gettin pushed around on the glass, and as usual gettin pushed Further away from the paint til he’s forced2 shoot off balance fadeaways or a double pump fg attempt..how weak..he needs 2 learn how 2 play with toughness and stay outta the lane when some1 (CDR) hits the go ahead basket..

by The GM on Jan 30, 2010 1:44 AM EST reply actions

It is time for YI to leave NETS. Only two coaches are nice to him, others from DH, CDR to Lopez do not like to see (Jealousy) him play well. None of the NETS players are serious care about NETS. They only care about themselves individually. The poor thing is that NONE of them know from whom they will get their next month paycheck, including Lopez and Harris.

by FPLC on Jan 30, 2010 2:07 AM EST reply actions

For those who believe Humphries can and should be a starting PF, get real. He is slow, short and simply forces a ton of shots. How many Offensive fouls did he have tonight, 8?

Yi did not look any better! Brook let me down with missing some key free throws and CDR simply looked lost out there.

Those four were the cause of the team’s loss tonight. Disappointing as it was an easy win!

by Adam on Jan 30, 2010 2:25 AM EST reply actions

There’s a reason why other teams aren’t keeping Humphries. We should have traded him while his value was high from the last few games. Now we have to hope he has a few more good games so that we can fool another GM into taking him off our books.

by GoNetsGo on Jan 30, 2010 4:36 AM EST reply actions

@gonetsgo are you kidding me? He has been playing solid for a cheap price. He allowed us to send the worst player in the nba away from our team. He did have a bad game and played kind of selfish but come on.

We played pretty well, just unfortunately didnt get the win. I love the last two games. A W and a loss by 2. Better than the previous ten to watch when I have to turn the game off in the 3rd quarter. Nets fans relax! Our time will come. Stop judging players on game by game samples.

by Bruce on Jan 30, 2010 4:52 AM EST reply actions

Hump played one good game and all the morons think he is the best gift in the world. He is ok but now he has this bad game, are people going to say trade him? In fact, he did suck this game but I am gonna wait and see, instead of jumping to some stupid judgements.

by Russ on Jan 30, 2010 4:54 AM EST reply actions

boy nets fans are quick to turn on a player. relax! the whole team sucks!

they are going to be up and down and as sucky as we played in the 4th we still had a chance to win.

by superb on Jan 30, 2010 6:03 AM EST reply actions

Was reality check last night. We are still a bad a team but at least we can compete against other really bad teams.

Good to see Lee get his shooting back (maybe he will improve further if they pull another tooth?).

All the talk about why this team is so bad and how bad they play defence is all well and good, but the bottem line is we done score enough baskets. So far this year our shooting has been horrible. We need our shooters scoring and Lee has had alot of confidence knocked out of him this year. I for one hope he has turned a corner.

by Scott on Jan 30, 2010 7:13 AM EST reply actions

This was a chance for a win, too bad. What happened to Lee in the second half???? This guy BLATCHE always kills us, I think he is Sanford’s cousin!

by Paul Erstein on Jan 30, 2010 7:37 AM EST reply actions

What universe are some of you living in? Amare not an upgrade over Yi? Hump is an upgrade. The Nets played an entertaining game, but lost. At least they were in it. Yes, all our weaknesses were exposed. We really do not have a go to guy with Harris out. Lopez needs a go to move that is crisp and quick and will result in 2 points or a foul. I think CDR is the most reliable pressure player. Yi is a no show in pressure. He is great at garbage time. The rest of them freeze up. CDR got a classy basket at the end of the half. I thought KiKi was going to him at the end.

by geo on Jan 30, 2010 8:19 AM EST reply actions

Hump is no 6’9, more like 6’6 with short arms. There is a reason why he was always an end of the bench player. Only on the Nets can Hump be made out to be an Allstar.

by Tom F on Jan 30, 2010 8:31 AM EST reply actions

LOL wasn’t everybody ecstatic about Humphries last game? Now he’s awful, a bum. And some people’s infatuation with certain players is straight up creepy…

by JB on Jan 30, 2010 8:41 AM EST reply actions

IS B Lo going to be unhappy again if another forward (Hump)takes away some of ‘his" shots? What he said last time made Yi stay out of the paint and turn into a jump shooter again. What a team!

by bill on Jan 30, 2010 8:53 AM EST reply actions

CDR had 9 rebs last nite, not 7 as shown on the left. He also played lockdown defense on Caron Butler.

by Jeff on Jan 30, 2010 8:56 AM EST reply actions

@Kael:
Amare had only 1 rebound in Phoenix win vs. Mavs.
He wasn’t even a key player in their win.

I think the rumor is true, but I don’t think either side is ready to do that trade and nothing would happen for 2 more weeks anyway. I doubt in end that Nets want Amare because he is too risky for a Max contract and Thorn doesn’t take anyone who needs future surgery. I would expect Amare going to a top NBA team just for the balance of this season.
Nets could be a 3rd team involved to help make salaries match.

Hump had tough luck yesterday or else Nets would have won. He was still the main reason Nets competed and notice that Yi didn’t play much in Q4, so don’t say he is Kiki’s pet.

by jerry25 on Jan 30, 2010 9:05 AM EST reply actions

@Tom F.
If Hump is 6’6" with short arms then he is a world class jumper the way get dunks so easily. Then CDR is 6’3" and CLee is 6’1".

Hump is easily 2nd best big man on Nets and despite having tough luck yesterday, it wouldn’t even have been close if Yi played the whole game instead.

BTW, where is the quote about what Lopez said regarding Yi?
Remember it was Kiki’s decision, not BLo’s not to play Yi down the stretch and it was the right decision.

by jerry25 on Jan 30, 2010 9:11 AM EST reply actions

I’ll take Hump over Yi any day. Hump has heart and puts in effort. Yi makes KVH look like Iron Man.

by Peter on Jan 30, 2010 9:18 AM EST reply actions

Anyone notice how Lee and CDR won’t look at Yi when they “high five” Yi after a foul shot. The team chemistry right now is horrible. I can imagine K.G., Kobe, or Bird being on this team - telling everyone to knock off the petty personal stuff and play team ball. CDR and Lopez at least 5 times pretended not to see Yi open and calling for the ball last night.

by Robby on Jan 30, 2010 9:19 AM EST reply actions

T Will.. IS a point guard. The Nets has lost many of their games this year, trying to develop Yi… I say, Yi better give up and play guys that know the game. Starting Hump, while he’s limited, would be better for the flow of the game. Also, although Lee scored his points, he took away from the flow.

by NetRick on Jan 30, 2010 9:30 AM EST reply actions

@ FPLC

Why do you think Nets players don’t like Yi or treat him well? I have never read any player QUOTE that suggests that. Is your statement based on what a beat reporter wrote? Don’t believe everything these reporters write. Some of it is made up for the story to sound interesting or controversial.

Like one reporter wrote that he was “told” that Thorn met with Terrence Williams and threatened to send him to the D League if his attitude and play didn’t improve. Last nite when Ms. Taff asked TWill about that statement, TWill flat out DENIED it and said he had not met with Thorn or Kiki in that regard at all. Reporters write what will make readers read their columns sometime. Unless it is in quotes, I’d question whether it’s just the writer’s “opinion” suggested as fact.

by Jeff on Jan 30, 2010 9:38 AM EST reply actions

They lost because no one could make a shot in the final 5 minutes, nor did they make foul shots when they really counted. They played well most of the game, but the final five minutes just killed them. That’s the way it is with losing teams, they find a way to lose.

by Joanne on Jan 30, 2010 9:42 AM EST reply actions

Yi sucks when we win and sucks when we lose cuz he sucks.

by Mr. Big on Jan 30, 2010 9:50 AM EST reply actions

@Jeff
Perhaps the reporter was told that remark directly from Thorn and just assumed it was also said to TWill. Can someone post the link to remark?

I think Ian Eagle said that remark was to indicate that TWill needed more PT and if he wasn’t going to get it via Kiki, then he would get the PT in the DLeague (it wasn’t meant to be punishment). As it turns out, Rod spoke with TWill, he played better and got the extra PT from Kiki.

Regarding Yi, he didn’t play in crunch time, which means Kiki knows who is dependable and who isn’t. However, I don’t doubt there is resentment over Yi and Harris is one of those who hinted at with DD’s quote (joke) from Harris about Yi’s age. However, the resentment I’m sure is mainly about Yi’s overall playing ability, especially on D.

Hope Yi gets traded for something worthwhile, before deadline. Yi is owed 4 million for 2010 so he would have to be a key Net being considered for a trade. Not sure how much influence Brett Yormarket has at this point?

@jerry25 and Jeff

Here’s the link where I read the story…

http://www.nj.com/nets/index.ssf/2010/01/mails_in_the_halfway_edition.html

Just because TWill denied it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I tend to believe the beat reporters more than the players.

by pawley on Jan 30, 2010 10:25 AM EST reply actions

BTW, TWolves beat the Clippers (no Kaman) so that the Nets are back to a 6 game lead for top draft lottery spot.

Nets fans should be proposing more pre-deadline trade possibilities.

I think the most likely ones involve Yi, for the simple reasons that he is owed 4 million next year and Nets will likely be getting help at PF via free agency (DLee) and/or draft picks.

Yi is definitely being mentioned in a trade for Amare, but I suspect if it goes through, Nets would only be the 3rd team involved. Amare will probably go to a contender who can afford to take a chance for this year, but not intending to re-sign him. (New word is that Bosh isn’t going to be traded.)

How about Yi in trade for the 35 year old Marcus Camby (injured in Nets win), who had 19 boards and 10 pts. last night. Camby is paid over 9 million this year and will be a FA. Clippers clearly aren’t making the playoffs and they are having financial problems.

Not only would adding Camby (for Yi, expirings, cash, 2nd round pick) guarantee Nets win 10 games, Marcus appears to have a couple of top rebounding/defensive years left in him and could be a top Net until they move to Brooklyn.
I would do that deal in a heartbeat. Key is for Clippers to believe Yi is worthwhile and they might demand better draft pick.

From personal experience, I tend to believe the ACTUAL people the stories are written about (horse’s mouth theory) but you are probably the targeted reader.

Tough loss but you gotta love Earl Boykins. I would love to see Cleveland trade for Earl and then watch this little big man make clutch plays on a world stage. Guy has ice in his veins.

by Chris2 on Jan 30, 2010 11:44 AM EST reply actions

I love nets fans. Everyone loves hump and then he has poor shooting game and is now too short and selfish and garbage etc. I will take a young hard nosed pf with heart who competes any day. Guess that makes me fake fan. Oh well. And brook and hump are much better on court together than brook and. Yi. That’s why I would start hump at pfand bring Yi off bench. Better for all of their developmemont.

@ jerry25

your joking right?
trade a skilled 22 year old yi plus picks for a 35 year old camby?

by netsball on Jan 30, 2010 1:21 PM EST reply actions

Humphries is a dumb basketball player. He hustles- that’s all. He can’t pass the basketball and takes too many shots he shouldn’t take. Had Yi had the night Hump had (TOs, stupid fouls not getting rebs, bricking shots), I don’t want to imagine what some here would be saying. Yet, we still have some people here asking for him to start- which won’t happen as Dave D said- people need to get it.

I like Hump though. Good role player. But that’s all. He ain’t better than Yi.

I love when people talk about development. Do they think with last years team this is what Opie developed. How about next year when we have some players, will it be Yiki (my new favorite name) getting the credit for the development. Why does every team we face get referred to as a “good team” by Yiki in his post game interview? You would think there are no bad teams including ours. Then he says we played hard or we competed. His idea of competing must be that fact that we showed up and put five guys on the floor all game. It’s like he’s reading a script. For once I’d like him to say something like this. This was a team we could beat if my team played well. He’s nothing but a joke.

by Mr. Big on Jan 30, 2010 2:03 PM EST reply actions

Trade Yi. Keep Hump & Brook forever if you want. Just trade Yi.

by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 30, 2010 2:07 PM EST reply actions

Larry Bird wouldn’t start for the Nets as long as he didn’t have 1.3 billion fans and we wanted to lose. Trade Yi? Not until we get a new owner but then, as fast as possible.

by Mr. Big on Jan 30, 2010 2:23 PM EST reply actions

@ Mr. Big

Sooo you want the coach to publicly throw his team under the bus? I’m sure that’ll go over quite well with the players. Just ask Larry Brown how the Knicks liked it. Even more animosity, just what we need!

by muwu on Jan 30, 2010 2:24 PM EST reply actions

Just telling it the way it is. You know getting a pair. If you can’t handle the heat get out of the kitchen. You wonder why we’re SOFT!! Brown is a HOF coach. Think he knows a little more than some about how to motivate.

Uh, it got him run out of New York?

by muwu on Jan 30, 2010 2:32 PM EST reply actions

@netsball
I think you are the one joking if you think any NBA GM would consider Yi to be comparable to Camby in play.

It is probably already factored in that Yi is likely age 25 (not 45 as Harris joked about). The fact that Yi may be able to play mediocre (at best) for 10 more years is of little importance, since he isn’t “a keeper” except for marketing purposes. Camby at least should be dominant for 1.5 or more years. He could be another Mutombo for all we know.
And Camby would complement Brook well.

The only question is would Clippers demand more because there are other teams who certainly would like Marcus for the final run this year.
Of course Thorn would want to save his draft picks for June, but he may have little choice. All comes down to which draft pick(s).
At least this proposed deal doesn’t involve any potentially very good players like CDR and CLee.

However, now that Clippers are out of playoff race and in financial need, Thorn/Prokhorov have another opportunity available.

by jerry25 on Jan 30, 2010 2:35 PM EST reply actions

We aren’t a contender, we have no use for 1.5 years of Camby. In fact, the only reason we would trade for camby is because he’s an expiring contract

by muwu on Jan 30, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

Nets would by no means do that.

And how much more will we have to read all this bull about Yi being a mere marketing toy and x years older??? It’s ridiculous.

by Andres on Jan 30, 2010 2:40 PM EST reply actions

He basically quit after meeting with Dolan who wanted him to say he’s sorry. LOL. He got run out. Surre. How about that settlement after his “run out”. Maybe Yiki should give out pacifiers and lollipops. You don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. Do the Nets still have that “belief, trust and faith” sign in the locker room for motivation from Opie?

by Mr. Big on Jan 30, 2010 2:43 PM EST reply actions

Yi is likely to be traded before deadline if only he can play better and impress some GMs. I am rooting for him to do better. Benching Yi wouldn’t look good to other GMs.

Hump should continue off the bench though as I don’t want him to get into early foul trouble. Let Yi take some good fouls early on. Also Hump needs to fill in for BLopez. If Nets had Camby, than wouldn’t be necessary. Kiki finished with Hump yesterday so obviously Kiki has more confidence in The Hump.

Camby plus either FA PF and/or PF draft pick and Nets would have chance to be very good next year, with no room left for Yi. Therefore trade Yi while they could get something, and clear $4 million cap space.

by jerry25 on Jan 30, 2010 2:54 PM EST reply actions

@pawley

The Dave D remarks were said to be 2nd hand from what he said about TWill being threatened to be sent down (to DLeague).
We won’t know which is right and I don’t care at this point as long as TWill is given a chance to play and he doesn’t screw up, on or off the court.

by jerry25 on Jan 30, 2010 3:01 PM EST reply actions

If kiki and thorn would only trade yi…there are teams that want yi..

by Akara on Jan 30, 2010 3:58 PM EST reply actions

@ jerry25

your logic is totally off from what a NBA GM would be thinking.

why would they want to give up a young player for a 35 year old veteran in a lost season?

camby makes 9 millions, so that would mean they’d have to trade other pieces including Yi. which they will not do unless its an expiring contract. But that still won’t explain why they’d give up on a 22 year old.

why getting camby is so important to you is beyond anyone’s grasp. Unless your a big fan of him, there’s not much sense “renting” him for the rest of the season. If this trade were to happen, it’d go down as one of the dumbest trades in Nets history.

Stats:
Camby- 8 ppg 47 percent fg 12 reb 36 yrs old makes 9 million

RJ- 12.5 ppg 46 percent fg 3.7 reb 29 yrs old makes 14 millions!!!!!!!

Yi- 14 ppg 42 percent fg 6.6 reb 22 yrs old makes 3 million

Amare- 20 ppg 55 percent fg 8.3 reb 27 yrs old makes 16 million!!!!!!

a smart GM holds on to Yi, cause he is getting better

@Netsball
Yi is likely 25, Camby IS 35 first in minor corrections. And your data doesn’t show that Yi may be the worst starting defensive PF in NBA. The age difference is hopefully the intended reason to try to Sucker LAC to making the deal.

I’m not sure whether you are arguing that Camby is too good for the Nets to be able to re-sign him?? He is an elite rebounder and defender (just what Brook and Nets need)

His high salary this year is a GOOD thing because Nets are #1 at having Junk expirings to trade with. Battie + Yi would match salaries, but I would offer something better like Boone + Yi to make it more attractive and so LAC could save needed $.

Without trying to repeat the facts, 1. Camby would guarantee Nets finish with at least 10 wins which means it would look good to the media and to potential free agents. He would also make other Nets appear more valuable including Harris.

2. Camby could probably be re-signed for another year using the $4 million saved from getting rid of Yi, so that is a wash.
I suspect Camby would want 2 years, but if he really looks good, then it might be worth it. Camby would serve as a placeholder until their next backup center/PF is ready, or else he could have longevity like Mutombo did (age 40 something).

And as I said, Yi is a MEDIOCRE at best and although I wish Yi was desired by other GMs, tell me of just 1 GM who recently indicated they wanted Yi?? Phoenix wanted another young and top draft picks for Amare.

A couple of us posted about getting Camby months ago, but LAC was favored to make playoffs then. Now Clips should be considering a trade.

Nets need to make a trade that wouldn’t interfere with postseason dealings. Camby could be perfect if LAC was ready to deal him.

I’ll be looking to see Camby’s name come up soon in the Blogs.

Humpty dumty- Starting PF.. just because he played two to three games well, does not mean make him a good player or starting PF like most of you guys suggested. A roll or bench player will always be a roll or bench player. In another word, a loser is a loser no matter how you package it. He played a few games well becoz of the hype and trade. Mark my words, he is going back to his old loser way. That is sitting on the bench…and play like a Humpty dumty.. haha….

SO off topic, but when we move to Brooklyn why take a page out of the Warrior’s book and name our team after neither city nor state, but by state nickname. We could be the Empire State Nets (my girlfriend’s idea). Jay Z would love it. LeBron would love it. It just sounds good and it could ignite a cross country rivalry with the state-nicknamed Warriors.
