Will Lopez Be Better than Howard?

Brook Lopez didn't make the All-Star team reserves, but Dime's Gerald Narciso says this affront will be the last for a long time. Narciso writes that he believes Lopez has "more big man skills" than Dwight Howard and "will be better than him" in a few years. He adds Lopez is the "most fundamentally sound big man to enter the NBA since Tim Duncan" and "the leading candidate for the league’s next best big man".

Continued work on his strength, post moves, footwork, and one on one defense will make this prediction a reality.

I think Dime will catch a lot of crap for this from Magic fans, but he might be right

A credit to Roy Rogers, who is getting a reputation as a good big man coach.

Wow, reading the comments on the Dime article, people generally seem to agree with it. That’s a surprise to me. I hope they’re right.
Wall, Harris, LeBron, Amare, and Lopez…
I can dream, can’t I?

Dwight has absolutely destroyed Brook each time they have gone head to head. I love Brook, but he has got a long long way to go before he sniffs being as good as Superman. I don’t think it will ever happen.

Howard has owned Lopez thus far head-to-head. However, this article is a stupid comparison as the 2 players are different types of centers. Howard is a bruiser more along the lines of Shaq, while Lopez is more of a graceful center along the lines of Hakeem. Whether either one is ‘better’ than the other one in a few years depends largely on what their respective teams need them to do.
Lopez obviously has a few aspects he needs to work on, mainly that he has to bulk up some more and cut down on the turnovers, however he will be one of the premier players at his position for the next decade.
by Adam II on Jan 29, 2010 2:53 PM EST reply actions
I don’t think Lopez will be as athletic, or dominant as Dwight… But I do think that he has a better arsenal of offensive moves than Dwight.
Dwight is a better rebounder, blocker, and defensive player than Brook. Brook still need a lot of work on his defense and rebounding… If he can ever improve on those… he can be a very good center in this league for many years.
by LetsGoNets on Jan 29, 2010 2:53 PM EST reply actions
It would help if Brook didn’t play for the Nets. The knicks have been getting favorable calls throughout a decade of hideous basketball while every Nets player gets squeezed. The NBA is quite the joke
by Simon on Jan 29, 2010 2:56 PM EST reply actions
Once Brook gets better teammates then he can challenge Howard better because he’ll have more options. Pass to the shooter at the corner, pick-and-roll, take Howard outside with his mid-range jumper then take it to the hole if he runs at you, if Brook misses, Howard is out of position and athletic wings and a stud 4 will be there for a follow-up dunk, Lebron or John Wall takes it to the hole and Howard will be busy protecting the basket will it leave Brook with tons of offensive rebs, etc.

superman is still inferior to unathletic tim duncan…
by jirohkanzaki on Jan 29, 2010 3:10 PM EST reply actions
Dwight Howard is a defensive player of the year candidate. Brook Lopez is defensively challenged. Dwight Howard is among the best rebounders in the league. Brook Lopez is a mediocre rebounder at best.
’Nuff said.

Just being mentioned with Howard is a very big compliment.
Lopez is still very young. Nets fans should be very happy to have him.

I’m just waiting for the Nets to win their next three games in a row, and hear all the crying from the Nets faithful that we are blowing our chances at Wall. LOL

Posters on the Dime are more optimistic than fans here. A shocker…
We were very fortunate to draft him at #10. It is like getting the #2 pick.

While I like Brook and think he will be an all-star, I don’t think he will be as good as Howard. Howard is a better athlete and a better defender. I think Howard can single handedly put a team in the playoffs and Brook is on a team at 4-40. That would never happen with Howard. Howard can take over a game and Brook has never done that.

howard is so strong, thats why hes so good. If lopez were as big as him, no question brook is better.

Dime magazine was saying that Lopez, in a few years, might be better then Howard. Not today… I agree…
by Mike on Jan 29, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions
brook has to work on his speed, footwork, finishing with both hands and athleticism b4 he’s close to dwight. without a doubt brooks a better scorer. but just has to work on all those little things to become great.
by tu vieja on Jan 29, 2010 3:57 PM EST reply actions
I’ll take “Tim Duncan Ver 2” over DHoward any day. Completely different players, I just prefer the Fundamentals!

“the 13yearold diehard nets fan Says:

And if I was 7 feet tall, I might be in the NBA too. But I’m not, so I’m not.

You guys missed the point of this article, it didnt compare both of them now, there’s no doubt that Howard is a better player today, it asked the question will Lopez EVENTUALLY be the better player and with that I agree 100%.
I think that when this team will be ready to start the turnaround (next season?) Lopez will start to get recognised as either the best or second best C in the league (he’s already top 5 for sure).
If he’ll get a bit more open and wont be our only major offensive threat he’ll be a much much better player.
by adam.y on Jan 29, 2010 4:12 PM EST reply actions
Love the article and completely agree. Although Howard is a defensive monter, and uses his power to score, he’s very dimensional. There nowhere but up for him because he has alot to learn and his stats currently speaks for itself compared to Howards. I can’t wait til next season. Kudos to Rogers on coaching him.
by Ely on Jan 29, 2010 4:14 PM EST reply actions
He’s already a better offensive player, but i dont think he will be better defensively unless he becomes duncan like with his team defense.
by Kevin on Jan 29, 2010 4:14 PM EST reply actions
@AS
Brook has more of an offensive skill set and uses his feet better
Lopez, for his age, plays good defense and does indeed grab rebounds

We should all consider ourselves VERY lucky to have drafted B-LO with the 10th pick. You could argue that Lopez or Rose could have gone 1&2. Brook Lopez IS NOT better than Howard right not, but in a few years if he continues to get stronger/smarter and just overall better, i do believe he WILL be better than Howard. He is not as flashy as superman with his crazy dunks… but he is incredibly crafty and i do believe he has the talent to compare to Timmy Duncan. i do know that it will be very hard to accomplish all the accolades TD has gotten because of lack of talent in our Nets team… If you put Sophomore Timmy D on the Nets today i really don’t think our situation would be any better… TD has had the luck to play alongside great players like the admiral, Tony parker, ginobili etc. Another advantage TD had/has over BLo is that he has been coached by Popovich and Brook has not had a good coach as of yet.
The future is very bright for Brook.
by claud on Jan 29, 2010 4:21 PM EST reply actions
As long as we get a coach that will feature Brook above Yi, I think Brook can improve significantly and be a real force in the league.
by Peter on Jan 29, 2010 4:21 PM EST reply actions
Agreed, this was obvious last year, he just needs time. He’s a franchise center, does it all. If he were extremely athletic he’d be up there with the all time greats. As it is he will be a perennial all star leading the NETS to the promise land. That’s why this year doesn’t bother me at all
by supernetsfan on Jan 29, 2010 4:27 PM EST reply actions
Although brook is good, I believe Marc Gasol is the better young center. Marc’s arsenal is the same if not better than Brook’s, and he looks much smoother and more fluid while doing it. No hate on Brook, but sometimes he just seems slow and clumsy.
by HLC on Jan 29, 2010 4:37 PM EST reply actions
Brook is better in every way including age:
Marc Gasol 15.1 pts, 9.6 rbs, 25 yrs old (today!)
by John at the Jersey Shore on Jan 29, 2010 4:44 PM EST reply actions
What is really great about Lopez is that he’s only 21 years old. Usually centers are very raw at this age but Lopez has already a pretty sharp game despite what people say. Just imagine the player he could be at 26 when he’ll be at his prime.
by NjNico on Jan 29, 2010 5:06 PM EST reply actions
Ya Marc Gasol has Pau Gasol mentoring him and he played overseas for years. I would hope that he is a little more polished than brook. And idk. Marc Gasol is playing in a much more limited role than Brook. ANd brook is 21

Ok, we’ve all watched Howard for how long now? Hes super athletic and strong. However he’s never going to develope an Off. game past what he has now. He’s not going to get any bigger then he is right now. And yes, he’s beasted Lopez everytime they’ve played but that also has to do with the fact that Lopez gets hung out to dry with no strong 4 next to him and guards who cant keep thier man in front.
Lopez….His potential is crazy. He hasnt even started to add to his frame, expect Lopez in his prime to be 20 lbs heavier with muscle and an offensive game that just gets better and better…..He rebounds and he blocks shot, his De gets knocked but as said earlier its mainly because he doesnt have a stacked team that buckles down on De around him.
by Boomdog on Jan 29, 2010 6:26 PM EST reply actions
I’ve been saying this since last year.
Brook has a real offensive game.
DHoward is using Ewings old moves, minus a jumper.
Brook shoots 85% from the line, even Duncan can say that
Brook can face up and drive, or shoot
Brook has learned to recognize double and triple teams and pass the ball
Career high 7 assists this year.
Remember Brook is only 21 and will improve.

Offensively, I could see Lopez having a bigger impact. Defensively on the glass, though, Dwight kills him.
by MNFL on Jan 29, 2010 6:38 PM EST reply actions
Dwight’s best will be like Mutumbo with a light offensive game.
by Antoine on Jan 29, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions
Nah…. He is not as agile and swift. He will never rebound and defend on Howard’s level. I think he will surpass him on the offense end soon. But, unfortunately, most fans only think offense when they judge players. Howard is a total stud to build around. It will be interesting to see them play each other for years to come: years after VC is gone.

Lopez needs to add some upper strengh, more rebounding, and better post moves…
Lopez > Howard
better free throws, more size, more yought

I would prefer a version of Tim Duncan over a version of Howard any day! Sign me up if he continues to improve his game, which he will!
by JustinNJ on Jan 29, 2010 10:51 PM EST reply actions
Love Lopez on offense. Good hands. good shot. Improving footwork and technique in the post. Needs to get much stronger and work on defense, rebounding, and the head game. Nets fortunate to have him though.
That said Howard is a physical force, a freak of nature that can score close to the rim at will. He always impact the game as a big man wth his size, strength, and athletic ability. As much as I like Lopez, I’d take Howard all day every day. No homo and no homer.

Net fans better get used to Lopez’ face…. cuz he aint going anywhere… PERIOD
where the nets go….. Brook goes…..
by blazin pp face on Jan 29, 2010 11:49 PM EST reply actions
Definitely could happen. Dwight howard is good because of his athleticism. He has no dependable post moves and basically dominates the league with his incredible strength and leaping ability. Once his athleticism starts to wane, what does he have to fall back on? Brook however has actual skills. He has a good post game and an excellent touch, he can score in the low block or on 18 foot jump shots. He’s an excellent shotblocker and not a bad rebounder. In fact, tim duncan would be his closest comparison. That is, tim duncan minus timmy’s all world defense, basketball IQ, and leadership skills.
