The Future Is Just Beginning!

Now, it's about the future, really. Dave D'Alessandro's mailbag is chock full of details about the futures of Rod and Kiki (both may be back); when Mikhail Prokhorov will make his first decisions (think All-Star break); whether they'll sign a big free agent (lower your expectations); Yi v. Humphries (they like both, but Yi more); and Twill's fear (It's starts with a "D"). Dave's not alone: Al Iannazzone looks at the deadline.

“No joke: We’ve had players tell us they’ve moved their seats on the bus just to get away from some teammates.” Like I said, these guys aren’t exactly in love with one another. That’s got to change if they want to win. Certain guys certainly don’t help

Keep Humphries, keep T-Will, keep Yi (high trade value)and everything should be alright after signing some free agents and a successful draft.

@ muwu – TRADE THEM ALL EXCEPT for Lopez NOW, REGARDLESS OF WHAT WE GET BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“But it’s pretty obvious to me that he is playing to prove that they need him – not being aggressive, not looking for shots, going through the motions – and failing badly. That’s why I’d bench him.” Again, CDR frozen out? I think not. This is all his doing. He’s pulling a kobe from the suns series routine. Refusing to shoot to make a point that his team needs him

Henry Abbot’s blog post on True Hoop is incredibly harsh on Devin Harris (comparing someone to Stephon Marbury is about as harsh as you can get in NBA terms), but I think entirely accurate.
I have said over and over in comments here that Devin has been one of the worst guards in the league defensively, and Abbott backs that up (we can also see it from the time that Devin was out injured in November – the Nets were much, much, MUCH better defensively – somewhere in the top half of the league in defensive efficiency). What Abbott adds is how much of a gunner Devin has been (and his low efficiency) and his low assist ratio. So even while he has been terrible defensively, his offensive contributions have not been making up for his defensive woes.
At this point, I am in favor of trading Devin. He is not a building block for this team.
by A.S. on Jan 28, 2010 4:11 PM EST reply actions
I think devin’s poor defense is more a factor of this year’s injuries and offensive responsibilities. We’ve already seen in his early years that uf you put him in a role where he’s not the 1st or 2nd option on offense that he can be a really good defender. I think with a clean bill of health, a smaller offensive role, and a coach that demands defense, devin could be pretty good. Well, that’s what he had in dallas when you think about it. Devin’s probably best off looking at kevin garnett. Maybe some players, no matter how potentially good, are still better suited for smaller more specialized roles

it sounds crazy but here it goes….trade the first round pick ,devin harris and another asset for chris paul and another player (david west)?to be named.we get a point guard, cris paul thats the best in the league, while new orleans can get harris and possibly wall or whoever with the pick.Hornets can restart their franchise ,while we get a sure thing in cp3.

@muwu that’s not what it looks like..he’s 23, WAS having his breakout year, gets a new coach that tells him NOT 2shoot, in favor of Yi-ki, who has something “personal” going on with the coach..By the way, did anyone notice the Coach grab YiKi’s waist and rub his stomach after his favorite player picked up his 5th Foul? They looked like a bickering couple

@The GM
That’s one way of looking at it, but not the right way.
@A.S.
How quickly they forget last year. Fickle fans. If the Nets had a creative coaching staff, all the different talents of this team—minus the head cases—could be rearranged and made into something decent.
Marbury is and has always been UNSTABLE. He is certifiably crazy. To compare him to Harris makes me think a lot less of Abbott mainly because it is a lazy comparison.

@Net Income whose version of “right way” are U lookin @? That’s exactly how it happened 2 CDR..such a promising start, then fickle fans and media ask questions, he answered honestly (the system) and he’s punished..Once people REALLY looked @ what was going on its easy 2 see…then the coach comes out publicly in support of Yi sooo much…once Yi came back, that halted EVERYONE’s production/development, but CDR the most…think about it..CDR is treated differently because of what he “says” not his play..Brook admits the team is “soft” no problem..CDR caught hell 4 that..Brook complains of “touches” since Yi return..Noooo Problem CDR speaks on it…catches hell and mins decrease…hard 2 keep focused when anything u do is chastised and taken out in a negative way..all for a 23 year old, workin 2 get better and progress his career..I wish the young dude the best

@Net Income: I remember Herris’ defense being awful last year too. And I remember last year we had a facilitator at guard, but his name wasn’t Harris.
My opinion is that the two most important traits a PG can have is facilitating others’ offense, and his own personal defense on the ball. And those are the two weakest points of Devin’s game.
I haven’t changed my mind about Devin this year as a result of his poor shooting; I thought he was overrated last year too. In fact, if you go back in the archives, you can probably find comments from me saying that Devin didn’t deserve to go to the all star game – that there were several other PGs who deserved it ahead of him (such as Jameer and Rondo). So the accusation of fickleness does not apply to me.

CDR needs to cut the nonsense and start playing hard again.
I’ve defended him before because I don’t think he’s that bad of a kid, I’ve seen NBA players with worse attitudes doing worse things than running his mouth. But after last night I’ve had enough….he needs to stop going through the motions, get his head back into the game, and play aggressive basketball. The coach can’t bench you for being a factor because everyone will question his competence, but if Kiki was to bench CDR now, CDR wouldn’t have a case for himself because he is not playing aggressive at all.
Both he and Yi need to have their minutes cut in half in favor of T-Will and Humphries. Guys that are dogging it get no love from Mr. DB, that also includes that overrated sack named Devin Harris.

That’s because like 95% of Lee’s shots are from the outside(although he usually is only able to convert strictly spot-ups)…CDR isn’t really that type of player.
by Antoine on Jan 28, 2010 4:51 PM EST reply actions
Harris will never again touch the statistical heights he managed last season. He is a really good penetrator but his defense is abysmal and he does not bring much else to the table. He is the Cory Maggette of point guards.

@muwu that’s very simple..the same reason he was “Given” CDR’s job b4 ever putting on a Nets #6..because The coach likes C Lee..don’t u pay attention..when asked of Lee’s “shooting slump”, the coach responded ..“His shot will come along, and he’s gonna be given every oppurtunity for it 2 do so” translation: he’s my guy, he’s gonna play regardless…they’ll run plays 4 C Lee, CDR started at the 2 lastnite…ANY plays Run 4 Him?? Haha NO.. YiKi and C Lee are the ONLY pieces the coach/gm has brought in..oops and Humphries…NOW does it Add Up 2 U??

This Dave D piece is VERY telling
" Even if you accept the dubious notion that Thorn pushed Kiki into the coaching job to watch him fail — thereby making him chiefly responsible for the 4-40 team he had assembled — it doesn’t speak highly of the team president that he let him allow the team to bottom out this badly in the first place. "
I think it goes both ways. I think Rod wanted Kiki to take it where the sun doesn’t shine for what he pulled with Lawrence Frank, but also because they probably couldn’t afford a head coach(should’ve gotten loyer to coach the kids…they need to be taught, not being apart of two men’s retarded agendas).
“But the bottom line is, a coach can’t reward a recalcitrant kid, and there have been issues hanging over them for a long time — stupid stuff, the kind of behavior you expect from children, such as tardiness, eye-rolling, inattentiveness, and sass. We don’t even hear about half of it. And though Rod will never reveal his hole card — and the kid is too embarrassed to admit it — we’re told the thing that straightened him out was The Boss’s threat that he’d get sent down if he didn’t get his butt in gear. "
Good to see Thorn getting T-Will’s butt in gear. This is what has been needed for him to take his career a lot more seriously.

@ Net Income – You’ve written two articles about the possibility that Chris Douglas-Roberts has worn out his welcome here since the start of this year, so I would assume the odds of him being traded are well over fifty percent at this point.

By their actions, it seems there is something going on between CDR and Harris. I think their games are very much the same, penetration and together the offense does not look good. The bulking of Harris, I don’t think help his lay-ups. And his perimeter shots have gone south. CDR is not a good perimeter shooter. Harris needs perimeter shooter.

@Net Income yeah “interesting” is an understatement..they broken down the rebuilding process “the right way” but Now that they have, their “development of young talent” has become force feed “the coach’s pet” and at the total expense of other talented (Namely CDR) players that deserve to be showcased 4 what they do as well..let’s be realistic, there’s NO way Yi should get as many shots as he does..PERIOD and as far as them dealing CDR, any scenario I’ve read involves Yi, C Lee..are they on the blocks?
by The GM on Jan 28, 2010 6:37 PM EST reply actions
@Edd
True both their game is similar which makes it easier for the defense to attack that one weak spot no jump shooter only Yi BUT one problem tho as we can clearly see his jumpshot is effected by that bad wrist injury he has and he was never 100% after he came back from the Hamstring. That’s just my conclusion I may be wrong only Harris know’s. Oh I’m sorry I 4got about Lee idk what the problem is then.

They like Yi more than Hump? What world are they living in? The one that likes slow, one dimensional, defensively challenged, push overs? Certainly not the one that likes energy and hustle. Man, Hump goes after everything. Yi just watches him and says, “I ain’t getting on the floor; I ain’t banging bodies; got to keep myself fresh and sweet for Kiki.” I hope they like him more b/c they are posturing for a trade.

Interesting downturn for CDR discussion recently. Thought I’d offer his current stats to dispel the growing blog scenario that CDR is a disposable scrub on the Nets team.
Even including CDR’s January shooting dropoff, among his SECOND YEAR FORWARD SOPHOMORE PEERS (Eastern Conf, ALL teams), CDR’s stats today are:
- 3 rank scoring leader: 13.5 ppg; .454 FG%; .854 FT%
- 4 rank efficiency: 12.26
- 4 rank Pts/Rebs/Asts: 13.5 ppg/4.1 rebs /1.9 asts
CDR is getting trashed with stats like that? Well, those numbers are good enough for me and they more than identify a sophomore player worth retaining OR obtaining. The fact that he’s playing out of his natural 2 guard position makes him even more valuable. Thanks NBA.com.

“Two weeks ago, the Nets thought their future was tied directly to the development of the Lopez-Yi tandem. At no time will they ever think that their future is tied directly to Kris Humpries, even though he’s their most consistent competitor right now. Kiki talked about it today, saying 25-30 minutes is enough for Kris in order for him to keep his motor revved, and you’ve noticed that he has no problem pulling Yi at the 6-minute mark of the first and thirds. But what he doesn’t say is this: Yeah, he’s regressed a bit, but there are still signs of him coming out of it — like that first half against Utah, even if he couldn’t defend anybody — and you don’t want to destroy his ego at this point. The kid’s still trying, and he’s doing it under the harshest of environments — where most players couldn’t care less about management’s agenda, especially if it involves the development of a guy they don’t always treat too kindly.”
It’s obvious Yi as a starter doesn’t work Humphries is better and Yi has a glass ego. Scream loud enough and he’ll shatter.

Very Very Interesting.
Perhaps there is an anti-CDR conspiracy.
I like CDR’s game. I think he can be a rotation player on a championship level team or starter on a playoff team, but it is sounding more and more like he may be a locker room cancer.
The question is what to do with someone like that in a situation like this?
by Paul B on Jan 28, 2010 10:42 PM EST reply actions
what this team needs is a real coach and an owner who is willing to bring in a superstar shooting guard and small forward.
Humphries and Yi can turn out to be a good duo at the power forward.
Lee can be a great backup shooting guard..even though i do think him starting…he isn’t ready to be a standout guard yet.
Next year’s line up
PG- Devin Harris
SG- John Wall (am i the only one who thinks he is more of a shooting guard then a PG?? think of a new breed of shooting guard..) the combo of devin harris and john wall could be extremely good
sf- joe johnson
pg- Yi Jianlian
c- Brook lopez
This is a sick lineup with a lot of speed. the shooting of wall and harris might become a problem but with joe johnson in your lineup, these guys will get plenty of open looks and a lot of driving lanes with devin and wall running around.
bench could be:
- Kris Humphries
- Courtney Lee
- Keyon Dooling
- CDR
- FA center
- Boone
- rookie
this bench would be pretty solid if CDR or Lee can become the great 6th man
this is hoping that courtney lee finds his jump shot sometime soon.
(at least he is getting closer to shooting 40 percent)
And you guys should be just happy that Thorn found the moose he was looking for in Humphries….but he IS NOT a starter…he doesn’t have enough offense to be able to score points against NBA starters night in/night out.
Think of a better/stronger version of Tyler Hansborough…the nets got a steal in the trade for Najera..
I doubt this team is going to find a great backup center in free agency..its probably gonna be someone from a trade of picks with boone.
if this lineup is what we’re seeing at the beginning of next year..
its gonna Joe Johnson, Lopez, and Wall who are gonna carry this team.
I think Devin can go back to being his oldself as a good solo act.
and hopefully Yi can keep the D scrambling with his jumper.

@ Paul
I have never read any CDR quote where he stated dislike for any of his teammates. I have also never read a quote from any Nets player that stated dislike for CDR. Have you? This “locker room cancer” seems to have been media-created and sustained by others who are not in the locker room.
I have read CDR quotes that he didn’t like the way the team was playing or the lack of intensity. CDR continues to be attacked for it on this and other sites. Like the poster noticed above, Brook Lopez stated the same things — even admitted personal culpability — and no-one took issue with Brook, just CDR.
CDR is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. He must feel awful these days, to be so PERSONALLY disliked by fans (who are strangers) and to be lambasted every day with defamatory accusations, questions about his integrity, mischaracterizations, etc. I hope CDR is as tough as he says he is, because this has turned into a witch hunt of this 23 year old young man, who after all, is a very good 2nd year NBA player.
What to do? I hope the new owner is smart enough to want to deal with players who can PLAY and hope that he isn’t a Twitter advocate who values that social network more than a player’s potential, abilities and performance.
