Is CDR Wearing Out His Welcome?

Devin Harris (wrist) and Courtney Lee (wisdom tooth) are both out and Chris Douglas-Roberts (stomach virus) is questionable Wednesday. CDR's future may also be in doubt, writes Al Iannazzone. He says the Nets would be "willing to deal him if they found a trade they liked". "He’s starting to wear out his welcome" with "outspokeness", Iannazzone explains. He'd have to part of a larger deal to get return value.

He has no value right now, scoring like 4 points a game.

When teams keep losing, players usually stop playing.

Show me who’s not playing and I will show you who’s going to be gone by next year. You can probably start with Harris, Lee and CDR…

Toothache, stomachache, wrist hurts… Come on…

by ZHAS on Jan 27, 2010 3:39 PM EST reply actions

CDR WILL Play tonight, even if only for 5 minute periods to have time for Toilet breaks. I Guarantee it, because this is his chance to play more SG with CLee out. CDR shouldn’t miss this opportunity for a 20+ point game with lots of slashes to the hoop. Bring “Depends” though.

I hope Kiki is smart enough to play TWill at SF in place of those minutes. TWill is being tested by Thorn apparently.

Everything going on, on the court will affect what Thorn can and should do before the trade deadline.

by jerry25 on Jan 27, 2010 3:40 PM EST reply actions

Simmons, CDR, Lee for Amare since the team doesn’t seem to want to part with Yi

by J-Kay on Jan 27, 2010 3:40 PM EST reply actions

The one guy who cares about winning they will trade. Good job Nets

by ben on Jan 27, 2010 3:41 PM EST reply actions

I guess Nets management’s grand strategy of acquiring versatile “wing players” might be coming to an end.

The one big “flaw” in this strategy was getting wings who can’t shoot. I.E. CDR, Lee, Harris, T-Will etc… Plus they are all “small”, physically as well as mentally…

Nice try though… LOL

by Mike on Jan 27, 2010 3:46 PM EST reply actions

Mike – Lee was supposed to be a shooter… I don’t understand why he can’t shoot, but that was supposed to be the scouting report on him.

by J-Kay on Jan 27, 2010 3:47 PM EST reply actions

He could be a very special player but he needs a Role model to teach him properly….Unfortunately all of these players that we are getting rid of will always have career nights against us…It happens to everyone that we let go….They play terrible for us and then they come back to haunt us….(ie…Scalabrine / House)…If someone picks up Sean williams he will probably have like 21 blocked shots against us in about 8 minutes of playing time…..

by NetFan48 on Jan 27, 2010 3:49 PM EST reply actions

The Nets would be stupid to deal CDR at this point after seeing his development this season. Why has he not be playing well as of late? Why should he? From his POV theres no reason to play bcuz he plays to win.

Only guy on the team who wants to win!! He hasnt been showing with his numbers, but if the nets deal him, Douglasa Roberets will be on osme contending team wherehe is a significant difference maker.

Keep him. Hell develop well with both turner or wall. If we pursue idugala he fits. If we get lebron or amare he fits as well. Hes a fastbreak type player and plays extremely well with young, energetic players. Thats another reason why should be aquire Wilson Chandler.

by the 13yearold diehard nets fan on Jan 27, 2010 3:52 PM EST reply actions

The problem as I see it is that when CDR gets the ball, there never really appears to be any plan in place as to how to run the offense. He’ll dribble at the top of the key, and everyone seems to be wondering what to do next. Maybe someone will come set a screen, and if that doesn’t create an open lane, he’ll pass it. The end. There have to be plays to run wherein everyone is on the same page and can move decisively and forcefully. Right now they seem to be making it up as they go, making it all too easy for the other team to anticipate everything they do.

by JT on Jan 27, 2010 3:54 PM EST reply actions

CDR’s decline started around when Yi returned.
Kiki should shake up the lineup and use CDR at SG and use Humphries with most of the starters and TWill at the SF.

I’ll bet that would shake things up for CDR and the Nets effort.

by jerry25 on Jan 27, 2010 3:55 PM EST reply actions

Another dud drafted, good job Nets.

by Johnny on Jan 27, 2010 3:57 PM EST reply actions

The way I see it, our young players can’t be this bad. We either keep them and hope for them to blossom down the road or trade them.

But none of them is a future “star” player as far as I can see.

I would not just give them away though, unless they become a major “headache” and distraction.

It should be very interesting to see how things develop in the next few months…

The Toronto Sun is reporting that it looks like the Suns are sending Amar’e Stoudemire and Louis Amundson to the Nets for Yi Jianlian, Courtney Lee, Bobby Simmons, and the Dallas first round pick. Has any other newspaper confirmed this? I’m not seeing this anywhere else.

by Jim on Jan 27, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions

Why give away assets for Amare now when you can buy him in the summer? No team wanted David Lee last summer. With this economy, Nets will get Amare easily. Also, his microfracture repaired knee only lasts an average of 3 to 4 years.

by malorkayel on Jan 27, 2010 4:17 PM EST reply actions

This is ridiculous. CDR is young, talented and his contract is a bargain. He’s not going anywhere, period. If one of those young wings is shipped out, it has to be Courtney Lee, who has stunk the gym up and has zero upside, period.

by Andres on Jan 27, 2010 4:17 PM EST reply actions

It’s speculation based on a fansite in Phoenix which we link to under the main Amare story.

Bad trade for Nets.

by Jim on Jan 27, 2010 4:33 PM EST reply actions

Having suffered through many games and post game interviews I find the “reporters” asking the questions ALWAYS ask a loaded question so they can maybe “get a good quote”. They even ask the exact same questions (worst "reporters on the planet). Some guys know how to “respond in cliches” and some guys (CDR) try to answer “honestly” (speaking without giving too much thought about WHAT they ARE saying). It must be tough to be is such a rotten situation and then have to face the idiotic and divisive questions from the “press”.

by 4K on Jan 27, 2010 4:33 PM EST reply actions

I hope they get rid of him. He’s turning into a locker room cancer. T-Will should go first though, if he has any value.

by Angelo on Jan 27, 2010 4:38 PM EST reply actions

God I’m sick of him and his big mouth. He talks like he has an 8th grade education too, but I guess that’s the cool thing to do when you’re a professional athlete.

CDR, Simmons, and Yi for Amare works fine with me.

by Frank on Jan 27, 2010 4:40 PM EST reply actions

@ 4K

I couldn’t agree more. and then his remarks are further paraphrased into a single headline for maximum effect and that’s what people respond to. it’s lame.

by JT on Jan 27, 2010 4:40 PM EST reply actions

Ok hope C lee gets a a lollipop at the dentest. If this is another “headache” than yeah CDR is gone. Which I really hope he isn’t. He can be as outspoken as he likes as far I care I want at least 75% of this roster gone next year anyway. But CDR is a warrior hope he plays tonight chance to see at his actual position and also with C Lee out of the lineup he’ll get some more shot attempts maybe a chance to jump start himself back to where he was. If he doesn’t play than you have to wonder if he’s really sick since the guy played through swine flu and has an oppurtunity this game. I’d also like to see Terrance start tonight just to shake things up but expect to Hassel or Hayes out there.

There is no reason to give away assets other than “I don’t want him on the team”.

The team is terrible we know that, we knew that going in the season getting rid of all those contracts for cap space. What did you all expect?

The plan was to tank and win 20 games max to get the #1 pick. Then buy free agents. This year, we were suppose to lose games. Win 6 games vs 20 games, does it really matter?

by malorkayel on Jan 27, 2010 4:58 PM EST reply actions

the whole team’s productivity and momentum – what there was of it – collapsed when Yi returned. The moment the spotlight went on Yi, opportunities and young player development ended. The kids aren’t getting on or off court attention from the coaching staff. We should worry about Brook – how can he improve when he’s had to carry the team all year (triple teamed at times) and then Kiki favors Yi. And forget about Amare, that’s not going to happen.

by fastbreak on Jan 27, 2010 5:06 PM EST reply actions

Everybody got worse when Yi came back and he became the focal point.

by Tom F on Jan 27, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

Love Iannozone’s logice: CDR would be a good 6th or 7th man next year. Everybody on this team would be a good 6th or 7th man!

CDR is a keeper to me. He competes and cares and is or can be a dynamic offensive player. I think he has a bright future. The rest of them (except Lopez) I’m not sure about.

by geo on Jan 27, 2010 5:20 PM EST reply actions

I disagree fastbreak. The Nets played 3 relatively close and competitive games against Minn., Houston and OKC when Yi came back, beat the Knicks in probably there best all-around performance of the year, and then battled the Cavs until about 4 minutes left in the fourth. If anything, this team was still a growing bunch of loveable losers until they blew a golden opportunity against NOLA – and they haven’t been able to keep the game in single digits since.

by Mark Ginocchio on Jan 27, 2010 5:21 PM EST reply actions

I would agree that it is not a bad idea to trade CDR + Yi + filler + Dallas #1 pick for Amare.
Sounds good.

by HandsomeLee on Jan 27, 2010 5:22 PM EST reply actions

by Antoine on Jan 27, 2010 5:45 PM EST reply actions

ben -

Just because CDR makes his displeasure public knowledge does not mean he is the only player who cares about winning. The veterans know that publicly sulking and whining is immature, brings unwanted media attention, and only makes things worse. It has been reported that Devin and some other vets over the course of the season have laid everything out in PRIVATE with the players only. That is the way things are supposed to be done. CDR and TWill both have a lot to learn. Just think about having 2 people in your office whining out loud and airing the company’s dirty landry to the general public. Complete unprofessionals, grow up.

“The one big "flaw" in this strategy was getting wings who can’t shoot. I.E. CDR, Lee, Harris, T-Will etc… Plus they are all "small", physically as well as mentally…”

LOL @ Mike, but very true. And guess what, the aforemntioned guards do not want to be here and it shows. So I don’t know why all the “man love” is being shown to them.

Harris is the only one who has ever done anything in the NBA, and he seems to stink without VC on the court. He is injury prone and wants out of here badly. No man love for him either.

None of them are great, so I could care less if they are all gone and swapped for other “young” players, who have guts and compete like professionals (i.e shut up too).

One thing for sure, no one on this blog, not even the smart ones (LOL) control wo gets traded anyway so whatever. It’s funny how some people say: “he’s not getting traded – period”. That is hilarious.

by My 2 cents LOL on Jan 27, 2010 5:59 PM EST reply actions

CDR needs to watch his mouth but I don’t see that being a good reason to trade him.

But lately, he has been going through the motions like other players on the team. He needs to keep playing hard.

Unless he’s involved in a deal to bring back a guy like Amare, the Nets would be stupid to ship him out “just because”

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 27, 2010 6:23 PM EST reply actions

could we possibly pair him with the dallas pick, a future first, expirings and maybe even Yi to a team with a crappy record for their first?

have an extra shot at the number 1 pick, we’ll still suck so we’ll keep the best odds of getting it, and we’d get 2 lotto picks regardless.

by hmmm on Jan 27, 2010 6:49 PM EST reply actions

This is getting out of hand.
CDR makes less than 1 million dollars
find another player in the NBA making less than 1 million and still averaging 13 pts per game… down from 18 earlier this year
CDR has 10 20 point games 1 30 point game.
If KiKi is getting tired of a player acting like a leader, fine.
Im getting tired of CLee doing nothing on the floor
Im tired of Yi not passing the ball ad not playing D.
Im tired of DH throwin up bricks, not passing, and not playing D.
I’m tired of KiKi.
I’m tired of losing.

by DJ HeavyDuty on Jan 27, 2010 6:51 PM EST reply actions

I agree the nets would be stupid to trade him because of his mouth but cdr speaks the truth about the team he has the most heart and passion. To me him and brook should be the keepers I don’t care much about anybody else. Hope he plays sg tonight and show all the cdr haters what he’s capable of.

by 1milord on Jan 27, 2010 6:54 PM EST reply actions

@ DJ HeavyDuty

Totally agree. Will add that CDR recovered in record time from a bout with the Swine Flu and ankle injuries so that he could continue to play for the Nets and was a MIP eligible before the “new system” of play. His play was exemplary from October through December. Now, he’s a “big mouth” Twitter user that should be traded. Not for his overall play (still has good sophomore stats), but for what he says to the media who seek HIM out. Talk about a 360!!

by Jeff on Jan 27, 2010 6:59 PM EST reply actions

the nets are 3-40…..I highly doubt anyone on this team is happy. Only difference is CDR seems like the type to wear his emotions on his sleeves.

Should he be mature about this, yea he should. That being said he’s how old? He’s still a kid, and he doesnt like loosing. If anything managment should be on blast for ruining these young players careers.

Not everyone likes to keep things to themselves and not everyone can lie whenever their asked about the team. Heck i know if i were in shoes i’d be be flipping out and trying to get myself out of there.

The fact that the Nets managment is getting sick of someone is absolutly rediculous. The managment/ratner, failed this team, its fans, and its players.

They came into this season with no intenstion of being competitive, and honestly did a piss-poor job of planning. I understand they wanted to rebuild but they never even thought about how destructive it is for young players to go through a season like this.

THEY DIDNT EVEN ATTEMPT TO BRING IN A REAL COACH AFTER FRANK!!!!(sorry for the caps)

CDR is very talented and has a decent offensive game. He needs to get more physical. But twitter is his enemy and when he looks back on his career he’ll regret talking so much. It’s one thing to answer questions from the media and it’s another to say it because that’s the way yo feel at the time. Can’t see Kobe, Duncan, MJ or any of the top teir players twitering every though every minute of the day. Just let your game do the talking.

Leaders don’t act like a-holes to fans and teammates. This guy is constantly making such a huge deal about his “haters” aka whoever says anything negative about him whatsoever. He wants to keep it real all the time but doesn’t have the brains to realize that maybe kicking his teammates while they’re down isn’t the smartest thing to do. Leaders know how to get through to teammates without being abrasive. You think Kobe’s teammates absolutely love him? You can just see the “why don’t you stop taking bad shots with a broken finger” expression on pau gasol’s face on some nights. Did his attitude help the Lakers during their rebuilding time? Doesn’t help that he’s been sleepwalking for a while through games now, don’t tell me he’s getting frozen out because he’s out there showing no aggression whatsoever. He just goes out and stands there like a statue. CDR allstar? That’s like saying Ricky Davis will be an allstar. Heck, at least Ricky Davis had more contributions across the board than just scoring back when
