Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Debate Intensifies: Are They Worst Ever...and Why?

It's now happening with regularity. As the record worsens and marks for futility fall, pundits ask, "are they the worst NBA team ever?" Kenny Smith tells Yahoo! Sports' Larry Beil that he believes they are, period. He also slams them as players, noting that how simple effort will get you 15-17 wins in the NBA. Yahoo's Marc Spears can't understand it but says now it's mostly mental...and bad, real bad.

I don’t see how they can get more then 9 wins. To get 10 they must go 7-31. after going 3-40 I find it very hard to believe that they can finish so well.

Wealthy Russian owner……Moving to Brooklyn……Worst Team ever……David stern should change the rules of the lottery in “2010” and the Nets should clearly come away with the # 1 pick…..

Yeh Really…We need Wall

by ChrisGNetfan on Jan 27, 2010 2:26 PM EST reply actions

I’d trade anyone at this point..I like Brook to stay but at this point I don’t care

by ChrisGNetfan on Jan 27, 2010 2:27 PM EST reply actions

Kenny Smith said: Yes, they are the worst team in NBA history after looking at the roster of the 76ers.

by jarkid on Jan 27, 2010 2:30 PM EST reply actions

Just move Humphries to the starting Lineup and we have effort from the beginning and not only from the point when we trail by +20 points…

by Gyniko on Jan 27, 2010 2:31 PM EST reply actions

@NetsFan48

Agreed,

David Stern should do that,

The first pick in 2010 is sent to New Jersey unconditionally !!!

by jarkid on Jan 27, 2010 2:32 PM EST reply actions

Yes, this team is the worst ever. You don’t only win 3 NBA at midseason by (bad)luck.

by JohnY on Jan 27, 2010 2:39 PM EST reply actions

Kenny Smith hit the target. No effort team.

by PA Net on Jan 27, 2010 2:41 PM EST reply actions

As for all of you praying for John Wall, you have to realize adding a super rookie to a 3 win team is NOT going to turn it into a .500 team. This club has an ingrained losing culture and a rookie is not going to change it overnight. Management is clearly satisfied with its current roster and not willing to do what it takes to bring in winners. I blame management.

by JohnY on Jan 27, 2010 2:42 PM EST reply actions

We can’t be the worst nba team ever, the nets are a d-league team!

by muwu on Jan 27, 2010 2:42 PM EST reply actions

Coaches are there in part to motivate. Veteran players are there in part to motivate. Either these kids are not listening or are not made to listen, then it is also imperative they are given a decent game plan to be competitive.

by mo on Jan 27, 2010 2:48 PM EST reply actions

What are there again? 9 contracts expiring this year? GOOD. Get all these no-trying bums off the team. It continues to amaze me how there is NO EFFORT. There are still 3 months to go guys!!!

by Tom on Jan 27, 2010 2:49 PM EST reply actions

yes they are, a freakin joke too

by Frank on Jan 27, 2010 2:51 PM EST reply actions

If the Nets could hit a jump shot from more then 2 feet out, they might have a chance in some of these games.

The Nets must be one of the worst jump shooting teams ever.

Nobody on this team is a good outside shooter.

Wasn’t Lopez and especially Yi considered good outside shooters?

Our guards and wings can’t shoot either. That is why they are always penetrating or trying to penetrate underneath, which leaves them out of position on the defensive end.

Do they have stats for FG% outside the paint?

I bet the Nets would be around .250%.

by Mike on Jan 27, 2010 2:57 PM EST reply actions

I’d be surprised if they finish with more than five wins. Ten wins seems like a pipe dream.

by Chris2 on Jan 27, 2010 2:57 PM EST reply actions

LAst Laugh… The Nets are in the news again, Dooo Da Doo da. the Nets are in the news again, doo da doo da dey!

by Jron on Jan 27, 2010 2:58 PM EST reply actions

I been watching basketball for a long time and I say this is the worst team. Besides Lopez there aren’t any starters in this team. I don’t even think Lopez should be your number 1 option.

The other guys I’m not even sure if they are can score 10 points a game without putting 30 shots up. Also the biggest disappointment got to be Lee I mean should he even shoot the ball.

I went to a few games and I never stay to the final buzzer.

by Seeker on Jan 27, 2010 3:03 PM EST reply actions

This is the worst team ever, and Kenny Smith was 100% right.

There is no effort. Almost the entire team has mailed it in.

This is why the people who think that the Nets shouldn’t make a trade for some star power RIGHT NOW are absolutely insane.

Thank you Bruce Ratner, Thank you Rod Thorn, and Thank you Kiki

Lawrence Frank should be thrilled that he is getting paid millions to sit at home and be away from this mess. The Nets did him a huge favor.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 27, 2010 3:10 PM EST reply actions

I completely agree. The team hasn’t shown much effort at all. It was a joy to watch Humphries play, even though he can’t dribble the ball. At least he tries hard. Our rotation on defense is terrible, leading to other teams shooting ridiculous percentages against us because they consistently get uncontested looks at the basket. Someone on the coaching staff should hold a practice on how to play defense.

I hope that this team gets it together in the 2nd half of the season. I don’t know if we can say that they don’t care anymore, but their demeanor on the court sure looks like it. These guys need to learn how to play a hard 48 minutes, then maybe they’ll win a few games.

by Unhappy =( on Jan 27, 2010 3:22 PM EST reply actions

“There is no effort. Almost the entire team has mailed it in.”

Yup. And I think that this failure to care about winning is the result of the front office’s similar failure to care about winning this season. It was clear to everyone prior to the season that the front office was not interested in doing anything to improve the team this season – they were interested in saving money and the 2010 free agents, period. If the front office doesn’t care, why should the players?

by A.S. on Jan 27, 2010 3:29 PM EST reply actions

Not the biggest L Frank fan but you know this team would have more than 3 wins if we still coach.

by Shea23 on Jan 27, 2010 3:35 PM EST reply actions

Unfortunately, I believe this team will win no more than another 2 to 3 games this season. I still watch the games but when you watch any other NBA game you can immediately see the Nets don’t come close to giving the same effort or hustle.
Since it is clear the plan is not working, the Front Office may help this team get some dignity back by acquiring someone like Amar’e NOW, and maybe get some additional wins along the way instead of waiting.

by Bob on Jan 27, 2010 3:44 PM EST reply actions

Don’t forget that Nets don’t have worst record locked up.
TWolves are only 6 games “behind” Nets for best Draft odds.
We should hope TWolves win some games to remove any doubt about who will finish last.

There are lots of reasons why players aren’t motivated to play team ball.

LeBron started all this, with all the rush to his free agency.

Many of the expirings have little motivation except to increase their value for free agency. Others are injured (Harris/Battie) or maybe unsure of the future with the trade deadline coming up. Simmons is just counting his money.

by jerry25 on Jan 27, 2010 3:48 PM EST reply actions

Simmons the biggest prankster on the team he must be so find it really funny that the bucks were dumb enough to give him that contract and that the nets still have it. He probably thought sweet I played good for that one season and got this contract thats it for me.

by Shea23 on Jan 27, 2010 4:00 PM EST reply actions

If the team doesn’t run effective plays, how is effort going to change anything? Run screaming straight at the basket and commit offensive fouls all night? Management has obviously decided that winning is not important this season.

by JT on Jan 27, 2010 4:01 PM EST reply actions

Hopefully, they can get some wins this week epsecially when they are playing some other bad teams so only time will tell until then.

by Tal Barzilai on Jan 27, 2010 4:19 PM EST reply actions

i try to watch every game…. even now….. but the nets kept insisting they are developing their youngsters…. I SEE NONE OF THAT… what they are developing is a losing mindset…. its outrageous that they are PAID to PLAY BASKETBALL…

my high school team from 2006 WILL CRUSH the Nets…. the nets should have OPEN TRYOUTS at this pt… there are a LOT of players out there who DESERVE a shot

At first i thought Porky shuld keep sum ppl…. but Porky needs to come in and CLEAN HOUSE COMPLETELY…. from Top to bottom… FIRE THE JANITOR AS WELL… then Porky will be respected….to show that he’s not joking…

by blazin pp face on Jan 27, 2010 5:37 PM EST reply actions

Worst NBA team ever, how is that even debatable? We need to consider whether this is the worst team in the history of organized sport.

by Ispartan on Jan 27, 2010 5:39 PM EST reply actions

Nets WILL make 10+ wins if:

1. Make another trade before deadline that helps team like the Humphries one did.

2. Harris’ injuries go away and he starts shooting more like last year.

3. TWill “gets it” and is given big minutes at SF.

4. Nets get a new Defensive minded coach by early March, who Demands hard work and respect. Avery Johnson is my choice at this time.
It makes no sense to get a coach before Feb 19 as Thorn is busy enough and Kiki needs to experiment more at this time.

5. The funny thing is, that if #1-4 happen, then everyone will start playing better as the present team Should be much better than the 8-9 member squad that competed earlier this year.

by jerry25 on Jan 27, 2010 5:41 PM EST reply actions

Did anyone see Wall play last night? He would look PERFECT in a Nets Uniform! No effort, and he was just outworked, out hustled, and basically flat out SCHOOLED by a 5’9" guard.

I want hard workers not spoiled kids.

by Tim on Jan 27, 2010 5:59 PM EST reply actions

I watch most of game. He is Freshman and maybe getting a little spoiled already. KY has an attitude that they can always win at the end. Hope is value goes down, so that he is still an option at #3. Evan Turner could match Wall soon, and Wesley Johnson is climbing.

I have watched Freshman DeMarcus Cousins (27,10 night) getting better thoughout year. He may be option if Nets get the likely #4 pick but it would change strategy for offseason.

Originally hope he would be available for Dallas pick.
Now both Cousins and Aldrich will be in top ten. Nets would have to do a nice trade to buy a pick from #5-#10.

by jerry25 on Jan 27, 2010 6:11 PM EST reply actions

Maybe they will do better if some of their fans weren’t so negative about them.

by Tal Barzilai on Jan 27, 2010 6:54 PM EST reply actions

yes, Tal, it’s my fault the Nets have only 3 wins

by JohnY on Jan 27, 2010 7:12 PM EST reply actions

They lose their next 4 home games, then I would say they are right on track for the worse team ever……

by Mike L on Jan 27, 2010 8:12 PM EST reply actions

JohnY, it’s usually common that teams cannot win games especially at home if their crowd is booing them.
