Reconsidering Kidd for Harris

The Nets are awful and the Mavericks are legitimate contenders. Does that argue for a reconsideration of the February 2008 blockbuster that sent Jason Kidd to Dallas and Devin Harris to New Jersey...and which most thought was another Rod Thorn steal? Kelly Dwyer says yes, not so much because of what Harris is doing or not doing, but because of the way Kidd is still playing...at a championship level.

it all depends on the draft pick.

by tu vieja on Jan 25, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions

Kidd could very well be a top 5 point guard in this league until the age of 40. Devin Harris will never even be a competent point guard – he is simply not suited to play the position – he doesn’t ahve the instinct or the passing ability. He has a total shoot-first mentality and he can’t knock down enough shots to justify that. Yes, Kidd was unhappy – we have Bruce Ratner to thank for that first and foremost. We could have been a perennial playoff had Kidd been re-signed. he asked for an extension despite the pathetic direction the team was heading in – it was a no-brainer that the team should have given it to him. It has been nothing but misery since he left except for the one night that the nets miraculously destroyed Dallas, briging on all the ill-fated and completely misguided “Thank You Cuban” chants

by Isaac on Jan 25, 2010 11:13 PM EST reply actions

either way to slice it….. JKidd wanted out….
i know Harris might not be Kidd worthy… but he’s a good consolation prize with the 1st round pick

we got the most out of that Deal…so before all you Harris haters start bashing him… just remember … we got a good deal

by blazin pp face on Jan 25, 2010 11:15 PM EST reply actions

First off Kidd is no longer on his Nets’ contract and he would’ve never signed with the them again. The question is not if the Nets are better off with Harris and a 1st rounder for Kidd? It is whether or not the Nets are better off with Harris and a 1st rounder than nothing?

Also, the Mavs are not a legitimate contender.

by Tin Man on Jan 25, 2010 11:24 PM EST reply actions

I still say that the trade was the right thing for us to do. The thing is, Harris is not much of a PG and he’s been exposed this season, so his value has gone into the toilet. He honestly looks like he’s had enough, and while i can’t excuse his poor play, I can’t blame him.

We get that #1 pick, he’ll be someone else’s problem. ’

What dwyer said about Harris on pick and rolls is the 100% truth.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 25, 2010 11:30 PM EST reply actions

Kidd is now a slightly above average player who can’t defend quick guards. That the Nets got Harris and some picks for him is not something to be reconsidered. It is something for which to be grateful.

by TWilliAM on Jan 25, 2010 11:31 PM EST reply actions

As much as I like Kidd and as much as I learned about basketball from watching him, he is on his last legs. There is too much quickness in the league for him now.

The Mavs beat the Knicks by 50 without him, so it is tough to determine the impact he is having (on the court).

Still, I’d rather watch a 50 year-old JKidd play than anything on the court for the Nets right now.

by robby on Jan 25, 2010 11:42 PM EST reply actions

Here we go AGAIN. Listen there’s only ONE player in this league who could put up great #‘s while injured half the season and that guy is KOBE BRYANT. I don’t know how y’all expect for Harris to repeat last years #‘s when he missed how many games during preseason with the hamstring injury, came into the season injured and now is bothered with a bad wrist. OK he’s injury prone but what guy in this league isn’t? Unless Harris miraculously turns into Kobe Bryant tomorrow don’t expect him to repeat the #’s he had last year give this a guy a break its really getting pathetic the same people over and over complaining about nothing they have control over.

by mikee21 on Jan 25, 2010 11:43 PM EST reply actions

God, I miss Jason Kidd. In the Kidd era, the Nets always – always – had one of the highest assist ratios in the league. Even with a team filled with guys incapable of hitting shots – the likes of Jason Collins and Brandon Armstrong – the team moved the ball, found the open man, put guys in positions to score. Now, the team the the absolute worst team in the league in assist ratio. It’s a team filled with one on one players, who can’t or won’t move the ball. It’s just not something you want to watch anymore.

by A.S. on Jan 25, 2010 11:45 PM EST reply actions

As good as Kidd is, he is on a GREAT team. Devin is on the worst team in the history of the NBA. Give him Amare or someone else and we can talk.

by Tim on Jan 25, 2010 11:59 PM EST reply actions

I think we all knew as Net fans that Kidd’s style of play would allow him to compete until his 40s. His defense & rebounding is still there but he’s not making anyone around him better like he used to. Yeah the Mavs are up & the Nets are down. But come Spring we’ll see what Dallas can do, Kidd was invisible in the series against Denver last season. Can he redeem himself this year? We’ll see.

by MP3 on Jan 26, 2010 12:00 AM EST reply actions

jkidd has surprisingly re-invented his game again…efficiency defines him now…assist-to-TO ratio, 40% from deep, etc. he still gets steals and rebounds with his uncanny knack for knowing where the ball is going to be before anyone else…he is definitely one of the greatest pgs in nba history
that said he wasn’t going to sign with the nets again after the last yr of his contract so we were lucky to get devin harris and 2 picks for kidd instead of ending up with nothing.

by jirohkanzaki on Jan 26, 2010 12:12 AM EST reply actions

I think it would DH would have been trade-worthy if he gets traded for Amare.
=D

by ZHAS on Jan 26, 2010 12:17 AM EST reply actions

Dallas got the better of the deal but, as we all know, Kidd did not want to stay- so that is that.

People say JKidd can’t defend the quick guards. True. But even the quick guards can’t defend the quick guards.
It’s more about leading your man to a spot or to the help defense anyhow when it comes to speedy players.

Kidd’s assists are still at his career average 9.2
Steals at almost 2 per game.
Rebounds well still.
Shoots the 3 at 40%.
Turnovers down to 2 per game.

It was Kidd’s energy level and trust in his teammates that inspired a bunch of near-nobodies to be better than they were and to go to the finals. Everyone on the floor knew that he loved to pass- so from the first practice they learned to “be ready because the ball is coming”.

If I were Devin I would take that mentality. Just pass the ball to where your teammates are going to be. If they are not there, they will learn to be.

@Tim
How many wins do you think the Finals teams would have had if you just erased Kidd? Maybe only a handful more than this team now I’m guessing.

by molskin on Jan 26, 2010 12:43 AM EST reply actions

We wouldn’t have gotten to the Finals without Kidd, but we would have been a playoff team.

In addition to Kidd coming in that year, we also added RJ, McCullogh, the A-Train, and got Kittles back after he missed a year.

Remember, we barely missed the playoffs 2 years before.

What are you talking about??? The ’00-01 Nets were 26-56 and the ’99-00 Nets were 31-51 – those were the two seasons before Kidd. Playoffs were unthinkable until he arrived, never mind the NBA Finals!!! We finished 34-48 the season Kidd was traded, 34-48 in the first full season without him and now 3-40!!!

Again, what am I missing here???

by Isaac on Jan 26, 2010 1:28 AM EST reply actions

once the timberwolves trade ricky rubio and salary relief to the suns for amare, al jefferson becomes expendable and the wolves would need a shooting guard. al jefferson for harris!

by jirohkanzaki on Jan 26, 2010 1:39 AM EST reply actions

Kidd improved his 3 pt. shooting after leaving Nets. With the old 3 pt. Kidd we would be saying that he is in decline.

Bottom line depends on whether 1. Harris returns to last year’s form when (if) he gets healthy and 2. on how many years left vs. Kidd. A healthy Harris with better teammates and Harris would be better again by next year.

I always thought though that Kidd was good for another 4-5 years, when he left, but without an owner like Proky, that wasn’t possible with Nets.

Speaking of former Nets, how about Richard Jefferson’s line last night? For $14 million a year, you get 26 minutes, 1-8 shooting, 2 points and 2 rebounds.

You can’t blame the Nets for starting over with draft picks and cap space.

Bring up from the D-League Tulsa’s Mustafa Shakur, who averaged 25.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists last week. There’s an empty roster spot. He’s only 25, has clearly improved his game, and has good size for a point guard.

Q & A with former Wildcat Mustafa Shakur
By Vincent Balistreri
Published: Tuesday, December 8, 2009
Editors Note: Former Wildcat Mustafa Shakur was a highly decorated recruit. Coming out of high school, he was ranked higher than NBA All-Star point guard Chris Paul. He played four years (2003-2007) under Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, starting in all but two games at Arizona. But despite the accolades in high school, Shakur’s inconsistent career at Arizona resulted in the former Wildcat going undrafted after his senior year at Arizona in 2007. The Arizona Daily Wildcat caught up with Shakur to discuss playing in the D-League, working out with Nic Wise and whether the Wildcats will extend their streak to 26.
(…)
DW: What made you decide to stay in the States and play in the D-League rather than go back overseas?
MS: Well, I thought it was the perfect time. I felt that I had improved so much, and I felt that I was ready to show everyone what I had improved on and worked so hard on.

by Barry Popik on Jan 26, 2010 3:54 AM EST reply actions

It is the same then as is is now. The trade still was the best we would have gotten. We also got 2 first round draft pics and a young PG that we all were singing praises about last year. It was the same with kidd that it is with Harris… they NEED All-star player(s) around them to be effective. Harris didn’t need all of the Defense coming at him and he wouldn’t have to get nicked up all the time. I know he is having a down season (understatement) but he is not Kidd. Harris is a offensive player. Kidd has of knack of making the game simpler for other players on the floor. At the time we needed to get Kidd out because of his complaining. This was the best deal we could have received.

by Chuck D on Jan 26, 2010 5:55 AM EST reply actions

Even Kidd could not clean up the mess that is now the Nets. Until they build a real team Harris will always struggle. Unfortunately he’s just not a durable enough player to do the heavy lifting required to bring this team back from the drudges, and not a natural pg/ leader. But like everyone else said happy we were able to salvage something from the deal, there’s no way Kidd would’ve stayed in Jersey. Let’s re-evlauate this in two years when our starters are Lopez, Stoudamire, Wall, Harris and Lebron!

by johnny on Jan 26, 2010 6:29 AM EST reply actions

Leadership is a rare and valuable commodity in the NBA. We do not have it. Mav’s do. Kidd saw the problem coming long before we did. He smelled a RAT. He was the only good thing that happened to this team in 25 years. Still, it was a pretty good trade, for both sides. If we kept Diop, or if he developed into a solid rotation player, better.

by geo on Jan 26, 2010 6:59 AM EST reply actions

mikee21,

It’s not about the injuries, it’s the bad habits that we’ve been seeing from Harris that went back to last year. Him being injury prone is a problem, but not as much as what he does on the court that bothers a lot of people.

As for those who wish that we didn’t trade J-Kidd…we had too. Kidd had quit on this team and wanted out because he saw the writing on the wall.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 26, 2010 7:16 AM EST reply actions

One of the things i loved about kidd was one of the things mentioned in that article. I remember reading an article about how Rodney rogers just missed an easy layup, then on the next ensuing fast break, kidd still passed him the ball, he made it and the roof came off the arena. Kidd has pre-eminent trust in his teammates and he does certain things that go beyond the court. He makes players feel good about themselves by always getting the ball to them in good situations no matter what happened previously. That’s why guys love playing with him.

by Randy Oreens on Jan 26, 2010 7:39 AM EST reply actions

In his prime, like back when he first came to the Nets, JKidd was a miracle man. He changed nobodies into all-stars like that bearded fellow changing water into wine. Oh yeah. I just compared JKidd to Jesus, come and get some :)

Look at those players that were here w/ Kidd. Look at their production before, with, and after.

I think that Kidd could have helped this team get 40 wins in his prime. Not now though, his legs/knees won’t let him run with that reckless abandon like he used to.

Prime kidd

14-8-10

prime harris

21-3-6

ill pick kidd 100 times over harris, kidd will make more noise. always has, and….

kidd will be a future hall of famer, 103 triple doubles, gold medal, USA athlete of the year, controversial with women, has his own foundation, assist leader only behind to stockton, led the Nets 2 times to the eastern conferense finals, 8 times all-star, won the 1st skill challenge…..

Harris, scoring leader last year (zZz), 1 time all-star, cuestionable defense, lost the skill challenge to a rookie (derrick rose), and the Nets arent looking him like a future part of this team….

Kidd > Harris

Nets suck!!!

Once again , I totally agree w/Isaac about JKIDD….If you go way back in the archives of the Nets Daily Forum that I used to be allowed on you will see that I said I was for trading anyone but JKIDD….And I was right…Look at the Nets w/out him…..What’s even more depressing is that jirhokanzaki has mentioned above that Ricky Rubio may be going to the Suns…If the Nets have the chance to get this guy and they don’t they are totally screwed up….Maybe that’s why we want Amare….We get him and trade him and whatever to Minny for Al Jefferson and the rights to Rubio…..

by NetFan48 on Jan 26, 2010 10:24 AM EST reply actions

Dallas wouldn’t in a 100 yrs do a “re-do” of that trade, regardless of whether they win a title or not, and the Nets did very well considering the situation they were in. It’s a win-win for both sides. Of course the “thank you Cuban” stuff was premature but so is the reaction to every trade that comes down. Just check out the postings on here after Humphries had 2 decent games.

@ Isaac. Know your history, not your glossary.

In the Nets 31-51 season I think they lost the last 10 games after losing a super dee dooper crucial game with the Magic that they needed. It put them like 3 or 4 back as I recall. And they were maybe demoralized and lost the meaningless games at the end.

@ Isaac again.

You’re missing all the changes between the pre-Kidd teams and the post-Kidd teams BESIDES Kidd.

at Paul B:

you are incorrectly assuming I don’t know my history. I remember the time under Don Casey with that poison Stephon Marbury on our team quite well.

In the ’99-00 season you are referring to, yes you are correct – they did lose their last 11 games, including thaht game at Orlando? What is your point? They were 31-40 up until that point, hardly anything to be proud of – and then they completely bottomed out. Any team that could lose 11 straight to conclude a season was not on the verge of anything – Casey totally lost the team and its interest to compete!

The 8th seed in the East that year finished 42-40, so the Nets were ELEVEN games out of the last playoff spot when it was all said and done – you call that close???

Let’s just say for argument’s sake, they even went 5-6 in those last 11 games instead of 0-11. They still finish with a putrid 36-46 mark and 6 games out of that playoff spot. Things were only going to worse with Marbury around not better. The Kidd trade SAVED THE FRANCHISE (at the time) – there are no two ways about it.

The next season with a better coach that Casey in Byron Scott (although not a great one either), Marbury, a rookie named Kenyon Martin and Keith Van Horn, the team finished 26-56. Yeah, they were really on to something.

by Isaac on Jan 26, 2010 4:55 PM EST reply actions

I’m surprised it took this long for another one of these articles since the Nets are awful this year.

by Sami on Jan 26, 2010 6:10 PM EST reply actions

@ Isaac

I would disagree that Scott was better than Casey. He took the same team, well minus Kittles and plus Martin, and delivered 26 uninspiring wins. We were very much in the hunt up until that Magic trade.

I agree with the emphasis of what you say about Kidd. He saved us… of course he did. For 5 years I referred to him as “the Savior” and had a little spot on my wall with his picture… it was a little perverse.

I just think we would have made the playoffs a couple of years. Martin would have continued to grow, Kittles would have come back from injury, the 3 for 1 trade would have still happened, we could have still taken Todd McCullogh and Aaron Williams, we may have gotten a young Keyon Dooling… or even if we kept Starbury made the playoffs. It is really a small disagreement within a large agreement. But yes, I think we would have made the playoffs.
