Yi's Double-Edged Challenge

If fans had been asked in September whether they'd be happy if Yi Jianlian was averaging 15.1 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 1.0 bpg at mid-season, most would have nodded. Of course, he did miss all but 19 games and his defense has been, to be kind, wanting. Not to mention 3-40. For Yi, the pressure on him as a Net is only one part of the story. The other is his status as the only NBA player from the world's most populous nation.

Well yi has improved from last year. It’s that nothing’s ever enough for most fans. Sure his defense still sucks, but you have to give him credit that he’s at least better than he was last year and he has a place in this league
by muwu on Jan 25, 2010 2:30 PM EST reply actions
I’m tired of hearing about the pressures on him……If you can’t take the pressure than get out……
by NetFan48 on Jan 25, 2010 2:30 PM EST reply actions
True he is averaging 15 and 7.5, but if you asked NJ fans if they’d be happy with everything revolving around an extremely inefficient, softer-than-tissue, minus-50-defense-rating PF, they’d say heck no!!!
Are you kidding, this team’s philosophy right now is about padding Yi’s stats and even with that, he cannot do much good to them.
by KJV on Jan 25, 2010 2:32 PM EST reply actions
He has definitely improved since last season, but he will never be a superstar or anything. The whole team has major shortcomings, and he gets too much criticism for his I think.
Yi could be a great weapon if he had better defense, but just like the rest of the team – he needs a couple of guys to lead him on the floor. I think he could be a great 2nd unit PF if he can get his defense to be solid. I just don’t see Yi as a starting PF.
by NiceBull on Jan 25, 2010 2:55 PM EST reply actions
Yi receives too much crap here amongst Nets fans. The guy isn’t an all star, but he is talented, and could be a good roleplayer for us off of the bench

@KJV
Simply not true, and it suggests you have an agenda.
by Net Income on Jan 25, 2010 3:08 PM EST reply actions
I think the whole “this entire organization is banking itself on yi” thing is totally bs. Just another whipping boy fans have found. First it was frank, now that he’s gone, it’s yi. If they did want to have everything revolving around yi, why weren’t they doing it the moment he got here?
by muwu on Jan 25, 2010 3:13 PM EST reply actions
Yi had a few of good games in a row when he came back, where his points came in the flow of the game. He looked energized, and didn’t look so weak and skinny. He was making mistakes, but he was playing pretty aggressively, and playing good enough to warrant a key offensive bench role if the Nets were a good team with real live NBA players. After that, he has played dumb and soft, and has padded his stats in extended garbage time of garbage time (let’s face it, last 36 mintes of Nets games is one long garabage time).
by Rocket Scientist on Jan 25, 2010 3:15 PM EST reply actions
Yi isn’t a bad player but I think he would be more suited as a 6th man. He just simply too soft.
by Seeker on Jan 25, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions
I agree muwu, Yi is having as many troubles on the floor as any other guy on the Nets right now. How can anybody get so down on one guy in this mess?
by NiceBull on Jan 25, 2010 3:17 PM EST reply actions
Yea Yea. Ship Yi, then all star Brook & DH, future all star CDR, Hustle & great defense Hump, with Lee, Dooling, plus A’mare will lead the Nets to NBA championship. LMAO!!!!!!!!!
by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 25, 2010 3:24 PM EST reply actions
@Seeker
Who among the Nets isn’t simply too soft. I dont see Lee or Lopez or CDR doing much to avoid that description. Hassell maybe.
by Net Income on Jan 25, 2010 3:33 PM EST reply actions
why not try Yi at the 3!!!!!
things can’t be any worse….He could play off them a step so he won’t get blown by…His wingspan will alter some jumpers….This way he won’t be a “soft” pf…You could play Brook, Hump and Yi together….Why not?
by johnfried on Jan 25, 2010 3:41 PM EST reply actions
When you suck on D as the starting PF cuz you’re soft your team will not win. If you don’t believe that then you don’t know the game or YOU have an agenda.
by Mr. Big on Jan 25, 2010 3:44 PM EST reply actions
@ Mr. Big
If the whole team defense is rely or start on the PF, then getting Amare Stoudemire is pretty much point less as he will not fix the problem on Nets defense…..
by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 25, 2010 3:56 PM EST reply actions
I’m fine with the rebounding stat. I’m happy with that part. I wish he was more consistent.
However, I could care less about the PPG, and would be much, much, much happier with some defense. Like, I’m talking, 2nd favorite player on the team. If he played good defense. But, he doesn’t, so I will continue to be a hater yess yesss
by hilario on Jan 25, 2010 4:05 PM EST reply actions
If you think an entire team’s play is defined by one position then you don’t know the game. Because we know everyyy other team’s pfs are such lockdown defenders and total tough guys. Orlando totally made the finals last year with ther lockdown tough guy rashard lewis at pf. And the 7 seconds or less suns totally won all those games with defensive ace boris diaw or amare at the pf. Please, defense is a team activity. Every single player needs to do their part. It’s a collective effort. Yi could be defensive player of the year but if the guards keep letting guys breeze right past them then it’ll all be for nothing.
by muwu on Jan 25, 2010 4:15 PM EST reply actions
Yi has the language barier…and adjusting to NBA games gonna take awhile…Yi a lonely asian man in the NBA…of course there is pressure..and racism from some fans…some fans in the state should know about racismn..but I guess some have forgotten..
I hope Yi get traded to Phoenix Suns…I want to see Yi with Nash..:)
by Akara on Jan 25, 2010 4:43 PM EST reply actions
@muwu
The suns never played defense and were a soft defensive team. For the most part good defensive teams start with good defending big men who are able to intimidate opponents from coming into the point as well as handle their own man one on one.
Yi was getting posted on by Curtis Martin a Dleaguer the other night and just got schooled a number of times. Thats whats frustrating about Yi.
No Yi is not the only bad defender and there is no real stat for being a good defender or bad defender but go look at his opponents game log and you will see he has a ridiculous tough time keeping opponents under 20 points
by matt t on Jan 25, 2010 4:44 PM EST reply actions
Oh Boo Hoo Yi is under pressure?
Yi makes more money outside of basketball
Many of these kids coming into the NBA have a whole family to feed and or a city to represent.
Yi was flying private jets since he was discovered over a decade ago when he was 17 LOL
Yi has the same pressure as every other NBA player. Maybe the language barrier but he was supposed to be “americanized” before comin to the US.
He’s been coddled and babied since he’s been in the league.
Yi even has the offense catered to him.
Even Brook Lopez can’t say that!
by djheavyduty on Jan 25, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions
If you think Lewis and Amare are as bad as Yi on D then I got nothing else to say. You give me bigs that can play D and I’ll give guards on the same team who can also. Sure everyone is responsible to play D but some positions are more important than others. The reason why Lewis and Amare won’t win championships unless they have a dominate defensive big guy is cuz of their limited ability to defend.
BTW I also believe the same thing about the center position for those who interpret my previous post as “an entire team’s play is defined by one position”. It pretty much applies to the whole front line but the center and PF are most important or for those who don’t get it, interior players.
by Mr. Big on Jan 25, 2010 5:18 PM EST reply actions
I am no Yi supporter, but I’m not gonna waste my time getting into a tizzy explaining Yi’s shortcomings. At his best, he deserves to start on a sub .500 NBA team.
Its all a moot point because Yi will not be our starting PF for long. Yi cannot effectively start alongside Brook, so that’s that. Thorn knows it, Proky knows it. Either Yi is traded this year, or he comes off the bench. End of discussion.
by JohnY on Jan 25, 2010 5:29 PM EST reply actions
starter / bench
Lopez / Boone
Amar`e / humphries
CDR / yi
Lee / twill
Harris / Dooling / Quinn
Amar´e for simmons, hassell, Hayes, Battie, dallas pick
but im sure we want to ´´develop yi´´ and this trade just wont happend!!!

This play a giant lineup with Yi at the 3 reveals just how little the poster knows of real life basketball and how much he relies on NBA video games (played on rookie mode and fatigue off) for his information

Hassell and Humphries are not soft….They both commit some fouls to remember them by…….The only players that I would keep for next year are Brook , Humphries , Dooling , Hassell and maybe CLee…..Quinn hasn’t had much of a Chance to play….I do also agree with the comment made by matt t…….

4 Million dollars of pressure! Yi is horrible. I can’t believe we lost RJ for Yi! He went from the next Dirk (thanks Kiki) to maybe a 6th man who can’t play d.

Can those who criticize Yi beimg soft name one tough starter on the Net team? And all this BS about padding stat, What do we expect our Net players to do when 2nd is already garbage time, stop shooting and playing, or just forgeit the game. Sick of all the Yi bashing. Yi may not be or will not be a great player but he is not doing any worse as compared to his teammates. He never complains, never bad mouths his team mates, coaches, the organisation or those Yi-haters. He never whines. He has been the top scorer or rebounder of the team for a few games. He works hard in every practice and doesn’t cause trouble off the court. And he brings badly needed money to the team. He is definitely a great kid to have for ateam, let alone one that is 3-40.
by Tomas on Jan 25, 2010 7:30 PM EST reply actions
Just take a look at the defensive side:
lpz: slow movement + lost + weak
yi: soft + lost + weak
hump:reckless + stupid fouls + lost
boone: no impression…=don’t exist?
There is no cure, unless they can have some clue on team defence, or here I come as the savior. lol

@ Tomas & Andrewbogut.
Totally agree with you 2 as well. Yi do need to work and understand the defense better.
Good point at Hump. It is funny that how everyone think he is the savior of the team defense…..
by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 25, 2010 8:05 PM EST reply actions
Actaully, I think is a good idea to get Amare as a starter and keep Yi as a back up PF. Yi can learn the offensive skills from Amare and that can surely increase the fire power. With all the young players we have, we can be a run & gun team just like the Suns that were under Mike D’Antoni.
by Nets!Nets!Nets! on Jan 25, 2010 8:19 PM EST reply actions
When a 3rd stringer like Hump is playing better than Yi, you know he stinks. As for everyone who says Yi has gotten better, it doesn’t matter. Its like Boone improving his free throw % from 25% to 35% it still stinks.

It amazes me how so many Nets fans keep on trashing one single player to vent their frustration with the team when he has so little to do with the team’s downfall. Welcome to the USA Yi.

as now the situation,Amare would not come unless Yi are tied on that trade.
Everybody may agree with that Yi come off bench if Amare comes, even Yi himself. But absolutly not including Yi’s Agent.

Do y’all really think Yi cares if y’all like him or not seriously. He’s still making millions, he’s starting, and he’s loved by the staff and his country he’s treated like a god. Y’all opinions about him doesn’t really matter he knows he’s not going ANYWHERE. He knows he’s apart of this teams future plans so regardless how many people hate Yi blame Yi for this record it DOESN’T MATTER.
by mikee21 on Jan 25, 2010 9:38 PM EST reply actions
@NetIncome — no question the soft label can rightly be assigned to most of this roster outside Hassell and perhaps Humphries (based on limited sample size so far). But (and I have no agenda other than wanting success for the team) surely a reasonable observer must admit that there are empirical differences between Yi and CDR/Lee when it comes to performing against “soft” criteria … man-to-man defensive proficiency, ability to finish around/protect the rim, etc…not to mention that Yi’s responsibilities as a big man are different from CDR’s/Lee’s. The specific argument I’d make is that Yi’s defense, instincts, and toughness are lacking. The first point should be obvious to all. The second and third are less tangible but the patterns seem consistent and alarming, no? That is not to say he hasn’t shown improvement (he certainly has) or he won’t turn into a reliable, solid player (he may).

Guys, it is not all on Yi. Brook looks even softer than Yi at defense. In Utah game, he allows Okur to score 20 in only 21 minutes on 8-12 shooting. Not to mention that a smaller and faster Boozer is even harder to guard than Okur. If you let Yi guard Okur and Brook guard the smaller PF Boozer, then you can see that Brook slow movement can hurt the Nets defense. In the past, Larence Frank used to be playing a small lineup with Yi at the center in the 4th quarter, and one article says that the entire Nets team seems to being playing tough defense like a real NBA team.

Don’t you dare talk bad about Brook, or even his brother Robin for that matter. Their rabid fans will jump you.
Lopez brothers can do no wrong. NEVER!
It’s sad, but it’s really the last glimpse of positive out of this season. That’s why fans were killing Yi for having better stats than Brook. People’s brains were short circuiting.

Y some of you ppl sounds like Yi is the only big man in the team? The only big man’s responsibilities? Where is Slopez??? Yall can say it is only Slopez’s 2nd year and he can develop as an future all star, but the fact is, he sucks on defense! The center should carry a lot more responsibilities as a big man the PF!!!

Come on! Yi is a 23 years old guy. He is a talent guy and hard working. Why you guys always criticize him this or that? Actually, as a PF, his rebound is poor, but look what he has done in the court, he and Brook always rotate to help the guards(the guard defense sucks), the coach always asks him to route outside the downtime as a potential perimeter threat.
The personality is Yi’s shortcoming. Wish some guy can lead us to win more than 10 games.
The team really sucks.
by kmen on Jan 26, 2010 3:05 AM EST reply actions
Riiight and yi is totally the only problem on defense. Please i’ve seen how easily guys get into the lane against us, did yi let them drive in? Our noted horrid 3pt defense, is yi the one leaving shooters wide open and sometimes not even bothering to try and close out anymore? Defense is a reaction of all 5 players on the court. If you play good team defense you will eliminate any individual weaknesses. The nets play every man for himself. On another note i would love chuck hayes on this team, he’s around 6’6" but he’s an awesome defender and guys do struggle against him even with the height mismatch. You’d be surprised. Chuck hayes is way more valuable than his numbers dictate

As much as the Yi haters want to deny it, there is most certainly a ethnicity factor in it. If not, why have we heard something like " Go back to China"or " stay in China". We don’t hear " Go back to U of Wisconsin…" for Devin or “stay in the ghetto” for others.
