Freddy's Bar Now the Center of Critics' Efforts

With their legal options more and more limited, arena critics are turning to public relations to battle Barclays. In particular, they've been trying to get publicity through a series of "guerilla theater" events at Freddy's Bar. The bar, one of Brooklyn's better known, is a tenant of a building already owned by Bruce Ratner. It now has its own Barclays Boycott website and is featured in this week's New Yorker.

It’s a bar people and there are plenty others near by. Get a life.. And start watching hoops because this team is coming like it or not.

Hey fred stop the self promotion, the nets are coming….

By the way your "group"wants their 15 mikes of fame, thats

all you want for your next bar..is not like you are

protecting a school or a hospital…..is an alcohol

gathering center,….is time to get real.

This massive construction is bringing jobs to our community

so we can pay our rents and take care of our families ,

those are real issues.

I still cannot believe the selfishness here. Folks – there is very little interest in the Nets moving to Brooklyn – even within the borough and especially in the other 4!!! Nobody cares – it’s Knicks country and the NBA plays 3rd fiddle to MLB and the NFL in NYC anyway.

It is time to start realizing how absurd the idea of this whole project is. The Nets belong in New Jersey and Brooklyn does not need this traffic nightmare in the middle of that intersection. Build the affordable housing, put a school or a libary next to it – things the area actually needs.

Keeping figting Goldstein and Freddy! You are in the right and I admire what you are doing to try and put an end to this madness.

Good morning Isaac, but your team just lost by 50 .

My team – are you kidding? I’m born and raised in Brooklyn and I DESPISE the Knicks. One of the main reasons I became a diehard Nets fan was because they play in New Jersey just as I am longtime and passionate Islanders fan. I hate the teams that play at MSG and what they stand for.

The Nets are trying to become a bunch of wannabee Knicks with a new corporate makeover – but unless they can sign a mega-superstar like LeBron, it won’t work.

Meanwhile longtime New Jersey Nets fans like me that have taken the good with all the bad for all these years will be gone.

Have some of you been living under a rock or just had amenesia on this? Freddy’s Bar & Backroom has been considered the center for their efforts from the start. They had tons of anti-AY messages on their windows and hosted numerous events involving that said issue. It’s interesting that some media sources such as the New Yorker is only saying this now. I am glad that Donald O’Finn has not sold out to the Rat. What makes this bar so special is that it features a ceiling that goes back to the speakeasies that many other bars after it do not have. On a sidenote, if any of you mentioned that the Cotton Club relocated from its original location in Harlem to where it is now under the Riverside Dr Viaduct, this is not the same one because the original closed down decades before the present one came around. Speaking of nostalgic places, everytime I walk by that Chase Manhattan Bank on Houston St, I will never forget how Manhattan lost its most known punk club known as CGBGs, which was the most famous punk club in NYC. It’s wrong to see another famous bar to bite the dust such as Freddy’s.

Issac:

You’ve seen the crowds at Izod, even when they were good…

There is no significantly large fanbase in NJ worth spending money for (and this has shown through the Nets hemorrhaging money)

As NI and others have consistently mentioned throughout, people treat Nets games like a minor league baseball game… something to take the family to if you manage to score free tickets from the workplace…

or currently, a way of seeing very very cheap lower bowl, near courtside seat games.

There is no fanbase in NJ.

at rightclue:

there is currently hardlly any fan base ebcause the owner of the team told the fans he planned to moce them nearly SIX years ago!!! Why is that hard for people to udnerstand? On top of that, the team is now so bad, it will likely set the worst record in league history with a few games to spare!!!

In almost any city in the country, there would be 3-5 thousand people left per game under these combined circumstances tey somehow the Meadowlands has been half-full for nearly every game this year – it is truly remarkable and speaks to the loyalty of the some of the remaining fans Ratner hasn’t chased away. Some of you truly have it all wrong.

by Isaac on Jan 25, 2010 5:14 PM EST reply actions

Isaac why is it so hard for YOU to understand that even before Ratner was the owner, when it was the debacle of Yankee/Nets/Devils and before that the Secaucus 7 still the Nets had no fan base in New Jersey – this has been a constant theme FOR YEARS…the Nets Championship days were not sold out.

Oh by the way, SBJ put out their gate rankings today, Devils only 15K per night – ranking them in the lower half of the NHL…just a thought

If any of you want to give DDDB a piece of your minds, they will be over at the 78th Precint Council Meeting tomorrow. The place will be over at the Secondary School for Law, Journalism & Research located at 7th Ave between 4th and 5th Sts in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn. The meeting will start at 7:30 PM that day. Who am I kidding here, especially when I know none of you will be there? Of course there is also the court hearing this Friday, though the time and location has not been announced yet, though it will probably be at one of the courthouses by City Hall Park as usual.

I never claimed the Nets were a runaway success or the most popular team in the NBA. But it is not nearly as bad as some of you try to make it sound on here. Until Bruce Ratner arrived the Nets had been holding their own at the Meadowlands and guess what? Had Ratner not stolen the team, they would be calling the Prudential Center their permanent home so those of you that hate the Meadowlands so much wouldn’t have to worry about it anymore. In Newark, the Nets would have kept their old fan base while adding many from the inner city community they would be joining. With a new arena, public transportation plus the local gathering spots for eating and drinking before and after games, it is OBVIOUS the Nets would succeed in Newark.

My biggest question for you Netlogic is, if you have so much disdain for New Jersey, why would you possibly call yourself a Nets fan anyway?

by Isaac on Jan 25, 2010 9:36 PM EST reply actions

I’ve told my story on here numerous times – became a Nets fan when I moved to the area as a young kid

When I got here, Daryl, Albert and Buck were awesome for me to watch…being a Nets fan stuck ever since.

I don’t hate Jersey as bad as you think, my roots are from NJ…I just am a firm believer in this project and the fact that the Nets franchise is beyond better off in Brooklyn NY than Newark NJ

@Isaac
I find your posts increasingly irrelevant. You do not substantiate anything you write other than by noting you once lived in Brooklyn. They are also quite condescending.

I’m sorry you feel that way. I also happen to disagree with every single opinion you have about the Nets – whether it be where they should play, who should coach the team, who is at fault for their current catastrophic status, about Jason Kidd, who you show very little respect for, about that horrific RJ for Yi trade, about Yormark and how he markets the team. Shall I go on?

What is your point? You disagree with me – are we all supposed to bow down to you on here and priase your every thought even if we completely disagree with it.

Please do not delete this comment – if your comment should stand, so should mine. I am not personally attacking you, but simply stating my case and standing up for MY OWN opinions.

I don’t think the city is going to stop this project for a bunch of alcoholics.
