John Wall To Enter NBA Draft

The John Wall Watch is on. The Kentucky guard, with the help of a threat from UK coach John Calipari, said Saturday he has "no choice" but to plan for a June trip to New York. The Nets have a 1-in-4 chance of getting the top pick if they finish with the NBA's worst record. Meanwhile, Peter Vecsey calls any Devin Harris-to-LA talk "Hollywood Hooey," saying Harris doesn't become expendable until after the lottery.

agreed, prokhorov is the savior…

ive been a derrick favors doubter but he posed 17 and 14 in a win over clemson earlier this week.

wall, favors, turner, johnson….we’re getting a top 4 pick a least…but hopefully its wall.

Best thing Calipari ever did for the Nets.

The way our luck is this year, we will not get 1, 2, or 3 pick.

by geo on Jan 24, 2010 10:03 AM EST reply actions

He’s the best college player but he won’t cure our defense and rebounding problems.

by Mr. Big on Jan 24, 2010 10:12 AM EST reply actions

You only have to look to last year where Sacramento (worst record) dropped to pick number 4 to see just how easily our fortunes can go sour. You think they weren’t just like everyone here heading into the lottery? I can feel the collective suicidal screams of everyone here coming already in a few months. They got lucky no one expected Tyreke Evans to be as good as he is.

This draft however, the gap between John Wall and everyone else is pretty big. No one even comes close to challenging wall to be the number 1 pick. People are already saying he’ll be better than Deron Williams and Derrick Rose and right behind Chris Paul and he hasn’t even played an nba game yet.

Oh I have a feeling this will end very very badly. And if you wanna bash me for not being optimistic, how’d the predictions for a win last night go for you guys? Yeah. Add to that the enormous instances in history where the worst record never does get the first pick, and I am not feeling good about this. Oh well, here’s hoping Evan Turner can be as good or better than Brandon Roy

by muwu on Jan 24, 2010 10:18 AM EST reply actions

If we dont get the #1 pick, we have to try to trade everything we have not named Lopez to get the #1 pick. Wall or BUST!!!!!

by SIC on Jan 24, 2010 10:27 AM EST reply actions

@ Mr. Big

Tyrus Thomas can!

Interesting stat -

Chicago:
12-7 with TyThomas this season
8-15 without him

the guy comes off the bench or starts, does his job, plays defense, plays offense, blocks shots, rebounds, can play the 3 or 4, etc. He never complains and Chicago has never complained about him.

We need to sign this kid as he would be a perfect compliment to Yi with his athleticism and defense.

Then sign someone like JJ or R.Gay to address our shooting needs. I like JJ for his leadership, but Gay for his age and potential.

Wall / Harris / T.Will
CDR / C.Lee / T.Will
Gay / TyThomas / T.Will
Yi / TyThomas / Humphries
Lopez / Humphries / DAL #1

Wall, Favors, or Turner. About a 75% chance of landing a potential all star. Don’t put all your hope and dreams on getting Wall. It is a recipe for disappointment.

by Chris2 on Jan 24, 2010 10:43 AM EST reply actions

25%

Nets might get no.4 pick, and it will be the biggest joke of this year.

by jarkid on Jan 24, 2010 10:57 AM EST reply actions

If the move is still gping through by June, it would be so sweet if the Nets fell to # 3 or 4 in the lottery after making the New Jersey fans suffer through this atrocious season just to see the team walk.

by Isaac on Jan 24, 2010 11:02 AM EST reply actions

Favors still has a lot to prove. He’s got a raw offensive game and could grab a lot more rebounds if he gave more effort. He could go as low as 10 depending on the circumstances. Anyone picking him will be picking purely on potential.

Chicago’s never complained about Ty Thomas but they’ve shopped him continuously. He’s just a guy that could be so much better if he could figure out how to put it all together and only do things he’s capable of. Just not the smartest guy around

Can we just fast forward to the draft lotter

by ben on Jan 24, 2010 11:10 AM EST reply actions

Either Wall or Turner, that’s it. With Wall, we’re getting the most dynamic player in the draft and perhaps one of the best prospects from the draft in a long time. After Wall, there is a significant drop-off, but remember, Wall is one of the best prospects in a while. Even with Favors or Turner, we’re still getting a player that has potential to be all-stars. I’m a little cautious in drafting Favors because he is a high-potential guy, and if that potential is never met, we’re a team that’s heading in no direction for a while. Turner, on the other hand, is more NBA ready and would have a big impact on this team. He would be a good, not great, scorer in the league, he rebounds the ball well and is a very good playmaker, he’s very tough and has good work ethic.

Stern will fix the draft once again
Nets will have the # 1 pick

by NetLogic on Jan 24, 2010 11:37 AM EST reply actions

If we end up with anything but the #1 or two pick, this franchise is cursed.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 24, 2010 11:47 AM EST reply actions

Wesley Johnson!!! He reminds me of a Larry Nance! body and game play.

by danxcr on Jan 24, 2010 12:13 PM EST reply actions

I think even if we get Wall we should purse another top 10 pick.

We could either use Harris or take on up to $8m in bad contracts from other teams (that would still leave us with enough to sign a max FA)

Any deal with:

Washington
Indy
Philly
Milwuakee
Utah (NY pick)

could make sense.

All those teams have lotto picks and financial constraints.

Between taking back some bad contracts, adding Proky’s cash, adding some of our 9 drafts picks in the next 3 drafts (not counting our #1 this year), adding players like T.Will or C.Lee, etc. we could be able to land a nice pick, just like Minny did from Washington last year for the #5.

Two of:
Wall
Favors
Turner
W.Johnson
Cousins
E.Davis
Monroe

etc… would be nice!

by Jack Handy on Jan 24, 2010 12:18 PM EST reply actions

@muwu

Chicago has shopped TyThomas this season because he has a large cap hold in the off season which they will renounce so that they can pursue a max FA. So instead of losing him for nothing once they renounce him for max cap space, they would like to get something for him.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to go for him now, since we too would get stuck with his cap hold, but when the dust settles in the off season and TyThomas can be left for MLE type money, we should definitely pursue him.

by Jack Handy on Jan 24, 2010 12:22 PM EST reply actions

Of the 14 teams after 1987 who have 11 or fewer wins in their first 43 games (Nets currently have 3, tied with 2 other teams for the worst start), none of these teams have ever won the lottery. 14 teams, 25% chance to win the lottery, yet none of them netted the first round pick. If Stern wasn’t going to “give” them the number 1 pick then, what makes it seem like he’ll do it now. And if I remember correctly, I think only 2 or 3 of these teams even got the 2nd overall pick. Most of them landed the 3rd, while some even got the 4th pick. Point I’m trying to make is lets not do any planning of getting Wall. If we get him, we got lucky. If we don’t, well odds were we don’t get him anyways so there should be no surprises.

by Jason on Jan 24, 2010 12:39 PM EST reply actions

1-3 otherwise I’m pissed the drop off is huge after Wall but even worse after pick 3 as far as we know right now. (it is a deep draft it seems though)

by Shea23 on Jan 24, 2010 12:41 PM EST reply actions

It’s not that bad if we don’t get Wall…..If we can land Evan Turner , I would do anything that we have to , to get Ricky Rubio……Then we draft a Power Forward and land a Free Agent…..We will have a pretty good team next year…..

by NetFan48 on Jan 24, 2010 12:49 PM EST reply actions

u just never know with the draft…wall could become a bust in the nba for all we know…

by Andy on Jan 24, 2010 12:50 PM EST reply actions

@Jason

It does not matter what NJ’s record is as long as the have the worst.

The fact is NJ has a 25% chance of landing Wall, better than any other team. Of course they have a 75% chance of not getting him, which is still the best odds to have.

As with flipping a coin, the odds of getting Heads is always 50%. The past does not matter.

by Jack Handy on Jan 24, 2010 12:53 PM EST reply actions

If we don’t get the top pick I hope Minny does. Then we do whatever we can to get Rubio. If Minny has Wall, Flynn, and Sessions, they do not really have room for Rubio. Plus, I doubt Rubio ever agrees to play in Minnesota. NY, on the other hand, is a different story. We have a pretty good mixture of draft picks and decent young talent. I think we could be a front runner for Rubio.

by Chris2 on Jan 24, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Turner will be an All Star also. At a legit 6’7’’ there is little chance he could fail – and he plays either SG, PG or SF.

I need more evidence to want Favors as a pick. He would be an experiment. Even Cousins/Monroe may be more of a sure thing. Still I prefer a proven PF via FA and a sure-thing Wing via draft.

There is also chance to trade (give picks) to move up, especially if TWolves are ahead of Nets.

Everyone knows that only 25% chance to get #1. But few people know that there is almost a 36% chance to get #4 pick. That’s right, the draft probabilities are screwed up to prevent tanking. Doesn’t seem fair.

by jerry25 on Jan 24, 2010 1:20 PM EST reply actions

@ Jack Handy

I know the past doesn’t matter, all I was saying is that everybody is already talking as if Wall is on the team. Only point I was trying to make is we shouldn’t get all caught up dreaming that Wall is coming. Because if we are under the mindset that he’s a future member on the team, it’s gonna make the offseason that much harder if we don’t get him. And as for having the best shot at getting him, that doesn’t matter. The way I see it, we have a 25% chance of getting him, and a 75% chance of not getting him. I could care less how that remaining 75% is distributed to other teams. He could go to Minny, Utah, etc. but the point is there is a 75% chance that he is NOT on the Nets.

I like Tyrus Thomas too. We need someone like him.

As for the draft, it’s Wall/Turner or bust for me.
