Bucher: Lakers Inquired About Harris

On ESPN's daily NBA podcast, Ric Bucher says the Lakers called the Nets about the availability of Devin Harris. Bucher wasn't asked what the Lakers were offering or how the Nets responded, but he did provide the Lakers' rationale for asking: LA needs speed and youth. "[It] says to me they are worried about their perimeter defense," said Bucher, noting they will face quick guards in the playoffs.

Worried about perimeter defense… calling for devin harris… does not compute
by J-Kay on Jan 20, 2010 6:19 PM EST reply actions
harris can play defense if he’s on a good team with a good system. as the 4th or 5th option on offense, he’ll have plenty of energy to play D.
by dex on Jan 20, 2010 6:22 PM EST reply actions
i wonder who they were gonna give us? adam morrison lol
by matt on Jan 20, 2010 6:23 PM EST reply actions
Lets get past Devin bashing and break down possible deals
by snookie on Jan 20, 2010 6:24 PM EST reply actions
What happened to the devin harris we saw last year?!..he looks like he just completely gave up, where’s the motivation?..one allstar berth was enough for you devin..where’s that eye of the tiger!!..
by StevieB on Jan 20, 2010 6:26 PM EST reply actions
i’ll take that trade if we get shannon brown and adam morrison in ruturn.
brown
wall
yi
humphries
lopez
yeah!!!

if we traded harris for morrison and brown i’d kill myself.

This better be just a rumor no way this happens they have nobody to offer us.

omg morrison is horrible. i would take brown but i don’t know bout his pg skills
by matt on Jan 20, 2010 6:37 PM EST reply actions
you know Thorn asked for Bynum and the Lakers hung up.
by dex on Jan 20, 2010 6:39 PM EST reply actions
Lamar Odom can’t play PF for the NETS? He would average 15 boards a game if given 40 minutes a night and plays outside, which would allow Brook to handle the inside.
by Adam on Jan 20, 2010 6:48 PM EST reply actions
Shannon Brown? Jordan Farmar? Feh.
Do the Lakers have anything the Nets want or need?
by TWilliAM on Jan 20, 2010 6:50 PM EST reply actions
I don’t know why the Lakers would do this, besides platooning Harris/Fisher.
No way Harris plays at SG and Kobe at SF for extended periods of time.
Even if we get odom, a fair trade, I don’t see why the Lakers do that. Having Odom as a 6th man is what makes their frontcourt so deadly. Sure he is having a slight off year, but who would be their sixth man then?
by rightclue on Jan 20, 2010 6:56 PM EST reply actions
Noo Lamar Kardashian Odom could stay in L.A If they’re not offering Kobe then no way this trade goes down.
by mikee21 on Jan 20, 2010 6:57 PM EST reply actions
Odom’s salary matches perfect. I would revisit this if we get Wall.
by ShawnG on Jan 20, 2010 6:58 PM EST reply actions
I’m sure that alot of teams are inquiring about Harris….I would definitely not send him to the Lakers…Unless it was for Pau Gasol and that is not happening…..And please ….Lamar Odom…..He is getting old and he is just an average player if he is on a team w/out Kobe/Gasol and Phil Jackson…..I would only trade Harris for a Lottery pick from a Crappy Team…Or just keep him for leverage around draft time…..
by NetFan48 on Jan 20, 2010 6:58 PM EST reply actions
Stop sleeping on Harris like he’s a scrub. There ain’t nothing fair about this trade on our part Harris for Odom hahahaha that’s funny!
by mikee21 on Jan 20, 2010 6:59 PM EST reply actions
ShawnG:
Nets should also wait to see if they get Wall. Getting Farmar alone would turn the Nets into Brook Lopez plus 3rd stringers.
But the Lakers would want Harris before this trade deadline.
anyway, imagine:
Wall
CDR/Lee
Lebron
Odom
Lopez
Sixth man: Yi
one can dream… one can dream…

“LAMAR ODOM……how can you not see it!”
SERIOUSLY. LAMAR ODOM=CHAMPIONSHIP. LOL !!!111
by TWilliAM on Jan 20, 2010 7:10 PM EST reply actions
The only scenario in which Kobe goes to LA is a 3 team deal. LA does not have the assets to get a deal done.
by J-Kay on Jan 20, 2010 7:11 PM EST reply actions
If the Lakers offered Lamar Odom, we wouldnt be writing about POSSIBLE trades. We would be talking about Odom’s first game.
The most likely scenario would be some offer of Jordan Farmar, Adam Morrison and a pick, which is nearly meaningless.
by Net Income on Jan 20, 2010 7:13 PM EST reply actions
Everybody is fair game, only Lopez is kind of untouchable. I still think Harris can help the Nets, even with a player like Wall – but who knows how much management will try and cash out before season’s end.
by NiceBull on Jan 20, 2010 7:14 PM EST reply actions
“We would be talking about Odom’s first game.”
What would the Nets want with Odom? He’s 30 and not very good.
I’m convinced y’all are insane.
by TWilliAM on Jan 20, 2010 7:18 PM EST reply actions
quit dreaming about lebron james.
he aint going anywhere but cavs.
they’re gonna win the east
so it’s gonna be cavs vs lakers
he aint gonna break the cavs core if he knows he can win something on his team.
lets just be a winless team for the next 4 years hahahah
the capspace idea is the most dumbest idea that the nets did couple of years ago.
lets just hope we can land some star in this team but i doubt it.
and for all the fans that keeps putting lebron on our team please stop it. because it’s never gonna happen.
lets get WALL (hopefully)
so it’s
1.wall
2.harris
3.gay
4.d.lee
5.lopez
i don’t mind being a playoff team than a winless team.

“i don’t mind being a playoff team than a winless team.”
Well, I DO mind. Finishing eighth in the East year after year is not what I want.
And doing stupid things like trading Harris when his value is low for Odom will lead to that result.
by TWilliAM on Jan 20, 2010 7:20 PM EST reply actions
@TWilliAM
I’ve felt like that for a while now that people are insane.
by mikee21 on Jan 20, 2010 7:22 PM EST reply actions
hahaha. i dont think nets can be a serious contender after KIDD’ era.
@twilliam – so you rather see the nets lose than winning a playoff spot? hahahah
you are insane for saying that.
nets is not gonna win a championship unless we get lebron which is the most impossible thing to happen.
nets is not gonna win a champioship as long as KOBE is playing like the best player in the NBA (world??)
so i rather see them in the playoffs than watching them losing by double digits.
lets just pray that we bring a star next seaon.
by maykmahman on Jan 20, 2010 7:28 PM EST reply actions
The Nets need a great player, and a couple really good players. They also need these new players to help change the culture of losing much like J Kidd did, and their new coach next season obviously will play a huge factor in that. I think the Nets have a bunch of good role players already, and they obviously need pieces put in place to make them effective. I think that most of the team are role players right now.
by NiceBull on Jan 20, 2010 7:35 PM EST reply actions
“nets is not gonna win a championship unless we get lebron which is the most impossible thing to happen.”
You don’t win championships by getting free agents. You get them by drafting at the top of the lottery and making the right decisions with those picks.
You don’t get high lottery picks finishing 8th and making the playoffs.
And you don’t win championships putting a mediocre team on the floor. NOT EVER.
by TWilliAM on Jan 20, 2010 7:37 PM EST reply actions
Honestly, I feel positive about the position the Nets are in for next season. Even though this season has been torturous, there will be a nice amount of money and options this summer. I will be glued to the trade rumors this summer.
by NiceBull on Jan 20, 2010 7:40 PM EST reply actions
People are really impatient, and I understand that. It’s really hard watching the Nets right now, but the idea is to make smart moves FOR the future, not short-sighted trades that undermine the future.

NI, you are the one who said Butler is too old for this team. You should be consistent. LO is a PF who has been in the league for 10 years. Does he have enough left in the tank to carry/develop a young team. I don’t think so.
LO is a great piece for a championship contender. We are not there yet. His effort would decrease substanitally on our team and he’d probably be screaming to get out of NJ.

If his time with the Clippers didn’t prove anything else…Lamar Odom is not a franchise player/leader& never will be. No way do i make this trade if i’m Thorn.

I just hope that the Nets will not accept Adam Morrison and Jordan Farmar in exchange for Harris. Fortunately, the Lakers do not have Sun Yue anymore, otherwise, the Nets might be salivating for another Chinese.
by kuljo on Jan 20, 2010 7:57 PM EST reply actions
Everyone with Wall in the lineup, ha. We have a one on 4 chance, although that thing is crooked. Say we get the 2 or the 3 in the draft, Davis or Montejunes is the pick. No way we go with a swing Tuner or Johnson. With Prokhy at the helm I bet Montejunes, but Davis would be safer.
Harris/Dooling
CDR/Lee
Lopez/Humphries/Free Agent
Montejanes
J.Johnson/Gay/Dallas Pick
That’s if we can lure a quality feree agent. Get used to it, it ain’t going to be much better….20 to 30 wins though and a huge step in the right direction with this young nucleus. Then 2011 will attract quality free agents, as we are still 15 to 20 mil under cap with Brooklyn looming and team on the rise. We are 2 to 3 years fro .500 but the franchises’ future is very bright despite this years debacle.

I’m sure they inquired, I’m also sure they offered that spa Adam Morrison. The nets might be the worst team in the league but Rod Throrn isn’t team president of Memphis. There will be no-one talking about. There will be no Pau Gasol equivilent trades for the nets thank you!!!
by Shea23 on Jan 20, 2010 11:44 PM EST reply actions
It’s amazing to me how the NET fans overvalue our own players, yet can’t see the value of other team’s players. Lamar Odom next to Brook would be quite a fearsome team. That would eliminate our need to pursue a top PF in FA and allow us to go after Rubio from Minn for one of our draft pics and Lee/CDR.
For those of you who say Odom is old and can’t play…..get real! The guy would be a constant 20pt 12reb, 4 ast player when relied on to be the go to person with Brook.
by Adam on Jan 20, 2010 11:59 PM EST reply actions
Brian,
I guess you have ruled out going after Boozer in FA as well as he too is approaching 30 and is therefore too old to help the NETS. With Bosh saying he would not step foot onto a court with the Nets, it looks like we will wind up giving the max to Amare.
by Adam on Jan 21, 2010 12:16 AM EST reply actions
No trading devin before the deadline. Why? His value is down point guard is the most important poistion and we are not guarinteed any good point guard. We also know Devin can play better as good as last year? Who knows but this is obviously an off year, injuries the presure the losing and the lack of somone to draw defensive presure. Devin is a good point guard and will play well when there he is the 2nd or third option on offense. If we could get Wall or another super star point guard then you revaluate otherwise we have to stick with devin.
Odom is a thirty year old medicore to good player, he’s more of a cog in a system kind of guy then a core piece. And he’s not your power forward of the future. Also we don’t need to go nuts and leave the most important postion comprimised just to get a power forward. There are plenty of better options than Odom available this summer that we can sign ok not Chris Bosh but Amare, Boozer etc. We can also draft Favors if we don’t go wall so yeah. And also there is no way the lakers part with Odom either they only interested in a con job to get better not in giving up anyone good.
by Shea23 on Jan 21, 2010 12:19 AM EST reply actions
Shea,
You seem to think the FA’s are going to be knocking down the NETS door to play with our team. Thorn has already realized how improbable it will be to woo one of those players, thus he is recognizing that without trades now, we will be spending our cap space on 2nd tier garbage.
by Adam on Jan 21, 2010 12:29 AM EST reply actions
Additionally, what makes you think Harris will have any more value during the offseason. While extremely improbable, if we do get the chance to draft Wall, teams will recognize that Harris will have little to no value to us, thus if you think we are getting garbage offers for him now, just wait till the offseason.

You forget probably the most important aspect of those trades and ultimately what will define them, the cap space. Lee, Odom are just the cherries on top. We have yet to see how the cap space will be used.

by Mr. Big on Jan 21, 2010 8:54 AM EST reply actions
I think money talks. The nets would probably be having a better season if not for the injuries, they never got time to gell together add in the fact that almost all of these players are forced into roles they shouldn’t be playing and you’ll see them better when their in their natural roles. On top of which by the time everyone was healthy the losing was well underway that stuff kind of makes it dificult to play chemistry. I meant they’ve changed their offense at least three times this year how is a team supposed to build chemistry with that. I think the nets will get over the hump of ten wins and be an attractive enough spot with money and a core for free agents outwise of the elite class. Every team in the league doesn’t have cap space after all. As for Harris I think if you land Wall you reevaluate I didn’t imply his value will be up if he starts playing better it definately will. But yeah what I did say was you don’t dish your PG untill you have another. And then you can shop Harris if you don’t like what your getting offered you keep Harris play them together and then deal Harris at the trade deadline next year when his value is hopefully up again. Beh another option the nets could have if they didn’t think they had shot at their main targets and wanted to avoid spending to much on guys they’d have to settle for, they could trade an expiring contract for draft pick(s). It a strong draft this year so thats another option to get better.
by Shea23 on Jan 21, 2010 9:20 AM EST reply actions
Lakers really aren’t the best trading partner for the Nets if Thorn does decide to trade Harris. I would like to get the best young talent possible for Harris along with expiring contracts. Become the only team in the league able to offer two max contracts. If Humph opts out and we buy out Dooling, we can even bring in two top tier guys and another reliable veteran, like a Travis Outlaw. All the trades of our top guys over the past few years doesn’t really faze me because those guys were in decline, overpaid, and dooming us to sustained mediocrity. We wouldn’t even be able to trade Vince or RJ for expirining contracts if they were playing with us this season.
