Did Humphries Deal Block a Dorell Wright Trade?

The Nets reportedly tried to get Dorell Wright from the Heat last week but the deal fell through. Miami would have sent the 6'10" Wright to New Jersey for the Nets' $3.73 million trade exception. Dealing Wright would have put them under the luxury tax. But the Mavs demanded the Nets take Shawne Williams in the Kris Humphries/Eduardo Najera deal. To make that work, the Nets had to send the TE to Dallas instead.

Humphries was the better choice then. He is more of a fighter and a guy who takes control of the garbage-business.
Everything done pretty fine NETS…chi-ching !

Im having mixed feelings on this. I feel like Dorelle is a good talent to have on a depleted roster. But if we were gonna do this, isnt like we’re helping a team we’re competing with when it comes to cap space? Anyways, im pretty sure Miami is going to find a taker for him, so why cant it be us, right?
Also, i wonder why a talented player cannot find minutes on a team that doesnt have much talented players when years ago he was given a chance and actually did fine.

He’s one of the fallen angels we should target, along with Joe Alexander and Darko Milicic. We spent most of the TE on the Mavs deal, so I don’t how we could make a trade w/ Miami work, specially since they’re trying to get under the luxury tax threshold.

Targeting Darko is useless. He’s made it known to everyone that he’s going back to Europe next season no matter what.
Hmm, would we have been better off if we did the first Carter deal instead of the second? The first one was that Ryan Anderson wasn’t included, but we would have only gotten JJ Redick and not Courtney Lee. Redick’s actually been playing well this year and has actually found a comfort zone as to his role, and not to mention that he played excellent defense on Ray Allen in last season’s playoffs.

Andres,
Please stop with the Darko trades. Muwu is right, the guy is gone after the year and would be a waste of time to have on the team.
Muwu,
I think it is safe to say that eventually you will reap the benefits of having Courtney Lee on our team. He is far better than JJ Reddick and he will become a fine complimentary player when in fact are able to reap the benefits of having all of our available cap space. The issue I have with fans regarding Lee is the same I have with fans regarding CDR…that being that for some reason we believed we were getting the next Vince Carter when we acquired them. That should never have been the case and if our expectations were more realistic, both players should be fine.

In terms of giving up Ryan Anderson in the trade…..I think fans forget how similar Ryan was to our current player Yi.

I also think people’s expectations of Courtney are overblown. This guy is not a guy who generates instant offense, you should have been expecting that since day one. His ideal role is a shane battier role, not having to worry about offense save for knocking down catch and shoot threes so he can focus on his defense. We’re such a poor offensive team that he is forced to try and create offense when ideally that’s not his role.

Would have been nice to get both of them.
Nets and Mavs had discussed the Humphries and Wright deals simultaneously. The problem was always finding a way to do the Humphries deal without taking on Shawne Williams and without giving up the TE.
Heat need to do the deal to get under the luxury tax. They are $2.8 million over the tax threshold and Wright makes $2.9 million. It’s worth more than $7 million to them. Not only would they have to pay $2.8 million in taxes, but they would lose out on the distribution of the luxury taxes. Teams under the tax threshold share in luxury tax money and this year the teams under the threshold will each get $4.5 million, the most ever.
It appears now that Wright will go to Memphis. The Grizz are the team with the most cap space right now. Maybe they’re still talking to the Nets but that cap space is down to $1.31 million.

It would have been nice to get both Humphries and Wright, but if Dallas held their ground on the inclusion of our trade exemption in the deal, the Nets made the right choice. First of foremost, we got rid of Najera’s contract which will definitely free up more cap space in the 2011 offseason and may free up cap space in 2010 offseason if Hump tries to turn his productivity for us into a longer deal and fails to pick up his option for next season. Secondly, we need the interior rebounding and toughness that Hump brings more than we need another talented but inconsistent wing player, like Wright.

He is a free agent this summer. If the Nets strike out on Lebron and Gay, Wright can be added with Harrington to the list of 2nd tier small forward FA’s that can be added for cheap this summer. In other words, no biggie that they couldn’t get him via trade.
