Vets Sit and Wait for Tickets Out of Town

Eight Nets are playing on expiring contracts worth more than $30 million...trade bait. Having seen Eduardo Najera and Rafer Alston leave to make room for young players, those left realize they may be next and so are doing the reasonable thing: calling their agents. Some like Josh Boone want to stay. Others like Bobby Simmons just want consistency. Trenton Hassell says the solution is "come to work and do your best".

Hard to predict what will happen before next season, but it seems as though it will be a house-cleaning. I think it’s necessary anyway. This team is broken.

I don’t blame them. I’m sure most of the vets are begging to be shipped out of here.
You’d rather play for the T-Wolves, or the Clippers, than the New Jersey Nets, the worst run franchise in all of pro sports.
This is a JOKE.

I just keep telling myself what NI says is the formula for a superstar trade…
Young talent, expiring contracts, picks, and cash = a superstar
Once Proky is approved, we have all 4. Let’s just hope the stars align and we can get our hands on somebody to turn this mess around.

A deal that makes total sense is the return of Courtney Lee to the magic for Ryan Anderson.
The Magic are hurting bad and Vince has been a disaster lately. They hated to part with Lee and bringing him back where he excelled would take the pressure off Carter and give the magic their starting guard from last year back.
Ryan Anderson has been OK for them, but doesn’t get much play off the bench. Back on the Nets he could split some time with Yi and spread the offense, something the Nets wouild sorely lack. It would be nice to have someone, anyone, thaqt can make consistent threes on this team.

I was thinking the same thing. Lee is not doing well here, not even trying anymore.

I’d like to see Kris Humphries continue in the rotation for a few weeks. Let’s see what he has got, we can’t lose more? Who I don’t want to see, are Simmons, Hassell and Battie. AND TWILL has shown us NOTHING lately. But, I don’t mind seeing Chris Quinn for 4 minutes a game, mop up time. Maybe they should play Boone a little, to keep his value. We got one quarter of high effort and efficiency last night, what happened to the other 3 quarters????

I am not so sure what these guys are waiting for, since outside of Boone, Hayes and Dooling, they will be doing exactly what they have been while with the NETS; that is sitting on the end of the bench during the games. Not a slight, yet just that reality has to hit them that their careers are expiring.
Can we stop with the trade Clee back to the Magic talk. Lee is not going anywhere and while his play has been lackluster at best, he will be given more time to develop. Same with CDR as long as he manages to keep his mouth out of the papers. In time, both will be serviceable and I think it will be sooner than later once we obtain a solid key player to lead the team.
Williams is a far greater question. I don’t like giving up on recent draft picks yet the NETS don’t seem to think the same way. His development is nil when he is not getting playing time as it stands today and just as we saw with SWAT, no playing will basically stagnate any chance for him to become a valuable member of our team. MGT needs to decide whether or not he has a future with us and if not, I think we should look to move him as his value (which is solely in his future potential) will never be higher than it is today.

This is a joke. How are you going to trade these contracts if you do not play them? Last few games we’ve been destroyed, yet Kiki plays his players 40 minutes. Why? Sit them down, especially when the game is out of reach. I fear we will get players like Quinn for our expirings. I mean Alston was one of our most productive and he brought back nothing, really.
by Yao on Jan 16, 2010 8:40 AM EST reply actions
Yao,
These players will never gain in value based on future play… their only value is to give other teams additional future cap savings. Without the willingness to take on future cap space as has been the tendency of NETS Mgt to date, why would you expect anything better than fellow expiring Quinn types and draft picks to come our way?
by Adam on Jan 16, 2010 8:43 AM EST reply actions
Battie, Simmons… I doubt anybody wants them
Boone, Hayes might be the easiest guys to trade, IMO. I like them and would rather they keep them for the rest of the season, but I can see both of them being next. They could help a good team
I hope we keep Dooling and Hassell at least.

I expect more b/c we have received more in the past. Someone like Alston or hassell could be important to a team that is gunning for position. A team may need a stopper or a play maker off the bench. But if you do not play them, how is anyone to know if Battie, for example, can help? Look at OKC: they could use a vet big.
by Yao on Jan 16, 2010 9:23 AM EST reply actions
Yao,
Unfortunately, by playing these players, their stagnated play will only diminish any remaining value they might have based on their past playing history. I am still trying to envision what you are hoping for in return from a contending team. Why would they give away more assets than they are getting in order to compete for position?

Trade deadline should be interesting….
I think anyone on this team could involved in a trade except for lopez, Harris, and cdr…
by Andy on Jan 16, 2010 9:47 AM EST reply actions
I don’t see a trade coming. Lopez, Yi, and DH have positions that management does not want to upgrade. That leaves trading for an upgrade on CDR or Lee. It’s just not going to happen.

Maybe management could trade for a player that would entertain the fans. What a concept! Nate?

@Robby
Uh, they did try to trade for Nate and the Knicks turned them down…Alston and Battie for Nate and Milicic. Judging by how bad Duhon has been and how good Alston has been in the past week, the Knicks made a mistake.
anyone here unhappy with trading Alston and Najera for Humphries, Quinn, a second round pick and $640,000 in cash (to pay Quinn’s contract)? Not to mention the coked-out Williams.

I think we prob couldve gotten something for Alston…but oh well…it is what it is.
by Andy on Jan 16, 2010 12:55 PM EST reply actions
Yao is correct. Players will never be able to be traded unless they play. Thats why Boone isnt in Denver right now. He missed a couple games cause of his knee and now since Kiki is determined to give “his” guys 40 minutes per night Josh has barely seen any playing time, so Denver lost interest and moved on to someone else. Kiki is screwing us in the trade dept. Players that dont play cant audition themselves for other teams. Its a shame kiki is such an idiot.
by John Smith on Jan 16, 2010 2:30 PM EST reply actions
We got 1M in savings from a buyout of Alston, a 2nd RD Pick and a free look at a 3rd String Guard that may make the team next year. Andy, what more were you expecting?
by Adam on Jan 16, 2010 2:41 PM EST reply actions
I don’t think any of the players who are not playing – Simmons, Hassell, Battie, Boone – would improve their trade value to any degree by playing. Boone has some upside, but he has basically proven himself to be a good defender, active on the glass, but no semblance of an offensive game and a poor free throw shooter to boot. Teams also know the issues of the other guys; they aren’t going to open up any eyes by getting more minutes. I like that Humphries is getting all these minutes and is being productive. If he keeps this up he may opt out of his contract (he has a player option) and all of a sudden we gain another 3 million in cap space, which could prove to be very valuable in attaining a secondary top flight free agent.

Give Hump a few more games with Kiki and his game will regress. He has not got the “defer to Yi” memo yet. If he gets too good he will be traded to protect Yi. Boone is staying because he is worse than Yi.
