Pacers Scorch Nets

The Nets remain winless in 2010 after another double-digit defeat, this one to the Pacers at the Izod Center Friday night. It was a one-point game midway through the second quarter when the Pacers went on a 15-0 run to take control. They led by 20 at the half and by as many as 22 in the third quarter before settling for a 16-point win. Indiana, led by Danny Granger's 28 points, shot 53 percent from the field and 13-23 from 3-point range. The Nets were led by Brook Lopez, who scored 27 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Yi Jianlian added 17 and 10, while Devin Harris finished with 22 points and nine assists. The newest Net, Kris Humphries played 27 minutes, finishing with 15 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a block. The Nets have now lost their seven games in January by an average of 16.6 points. A group of arena critics led by Daniel Goldstein of Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn tried to parade a banner through the stands but were stopped by security guards. The banner read: "Ratner Trashed the Nets So He Could Trash Brooklyn".

Forget arguing over which players need to go.
The best thing for this organization.. if they could make only one move, would be to FIRE KIKI IMMEDIATELY and bring in an interim COACH. Someone w/ experience.
Then we can all fight about CDR and Lee and Yi and all that… but c’mon… everyone would be better off without this incompetent dude.

Trade CDR and Lee, they both suck.
Harris and Lopez were playing really well.
Well, Harris is still the top two Nets player.

sat what you will about LFrank but we would never have given up 70 points in a half in back to back games. we need a coach, cant stand kiki on the bench, emotionless and clapping his hands even though we are gettin embarrassed night in night out.
cannot believe i still stay up until 3am every game to watch this garbage!

Just for your information; Lopez was 4/11 at the end of 3rd qtr….
Harris looks more like a leader this game.

Wow. With like 4 minutes to go in the 2nd the game was close. I think Nets were within 5. Then at the end of the 2nd, the nets are down by 20. It was almost as if you blinked and they lost their poise and defensive mentality. But yeah, Pacers can score in bunches.

Brook looked good, played well in the fourth, got to the free throw line throughout the game. When the nets look for the open lopez off pick and rolls or drives to the basket, good things happen. Devin harris looked really good as well. he looked for brook. CDR looked like a ball hog.

i miss larry frank. Kiki Vandeweghe just said “he really liked the effort we gave today.” GIVE ME A BREAK. PLEASE. come on now. what planet is he on. what is he smoking. “The game is 48 minutes, not 45. It was just those three minutes we didn’t play well.” What? What? What?!!!!!!!!!!! Are you crazy? DID YOU WATCH THE GAME? ARENT U THE COACH?! You guys sucked the whole game. You played somewhat competitively at the beginning of the first half, but once u were down u never came back. no effort to make a run to even cut it back to 10 points. it’s like we have a lazy, sleepy, 69-year old woman librarian running the team who could care less about effort/motivation. Bring in some russian dictator or something, kiki has to go

like they were going to dominate the pacers.
Nice job keeping it under 20….
Who is this courtney lee guy and why dont i ever see him do anything on the court.
Yi 5-13? He still looks lost on the weak side
Brook had a decent game.
Humphrie Hump looks good. Hes seizing the moment
Why did it seem like CDR had to get a rebound to get the ball to initiate offense.
Nothing set for CDR.

CDR kept forcing drives when he had the ball. I remember a play where lopez was posted up on earl watson and CDR just looked directly at him and dribbled away.brook was open another team when CDR had the ball and he just ignores them. CDR is a ball hog when he has the ball. He hit a 3 and that was nice, but he is a maggette type player.

Kiki IS management, he isn’t a coach and he didn’t even want to be one. He knows this season is hopeless, so he’s just giving the customer service “nice them to death” approach to these games.
There is no way to pick this team apart as far as who did or didn’t do what… this is a complete lack of chemistry and direction that started way before this year.
by NiceBull on Jan 15, 2010 11:05 PM EST reply actions
Dude, NiceBull, they played hard for Frank to start the season. With Devin, Lee, CDR & Yi injured and Frank coaching, they were more competitive in games than they are now… maybe it is a confidence thing after a while, since they go down and have no hope now. But Lawrence Frank would work hard, analyze tape, set up gameplans, motivate. Kiki does none of this!!
by Spec on Jan 15, 2010 11:11 PM EST reply actions
I think that people can get down on any player at this point, but it’s futile. You cannot knit-pick at this point, it’s way past that now. There has to be a major overhaul.
If you put some of these guys on a winning team, their game would most likely change for the better.

Remember all the bad things said about Frank? Look, every coach has his strength and shortcomings. The bottom is winning. Kiki is not made out to be a coach, let alone in this situation. I respect him for taking the no-win job. But it wouldn’t be a bad idea to turn it over to Del Harris. We will just see this whole thing as a learning experience. We may not want to admit it, we do have some subpar players making a lot of subpar plays. We have been giving up so many threes since….2007? Problem never solved…more new problems such as no VC,

I agree, Frank was a tireless worker – but the fact remains that they had 0 wins under him as well. Coaching can only change this situation after there is a complete overhaul, this is not an ordinary basketball situation where x’s and o’s will turn things around. This team is broken beyond fixing as it currently stands.
The Nets have not been consistent for years now, and it is a top-down issue.

All the people who say we have not been consistent in a long time, it sounded to me like when Jeter said it has been a long time after they won the world series. We are in a rebuilding mode and we have to be patient. On the other side look at this when is the last time the knicks went to the playoffs, sadly it has been a long time.
At least i could picture a very successful future with all the draft picks we have and a very wealthy owner who is very passionated on wining.

I agree, the keepers unless we can really make a big splash with using them in a deal should be, Brook, Devin (not at pg if we get Wall), Humphries, Hayes, Dooling, Hassell and maybe Terrence and CDR. Although I am really starting to dislike CDR’s body language. He acts like he is a star on a bad team, when in reality he barely even played last year. He should be cherishing the opportunity to get better instead of sulking. Keep Hassell, Dooling and Hayes for the veteran leadership and their decent productivity. That is six or seven keepers. That affords us the opportunity to revamp the roster with eight new players, two of which should atleast be all star caliber or even star quality.

Kudos tonight to DH and the Hump. Hump showed he knows how to set great picks and what to do when he releases. DH stopped whining about no calls and did not force the drives so much, pulling up wisely before getting to the rim. Nice feeds to Brook, too. Nets need to keep these three when the big dump comes.
Until somebody coaches team defense, Nets are going to lose every game. Team defense starts with faith in your teammates. Will somebody tell these guys when playing mantoman, every possession in shooting range does not call for a double team. Allow your teammate to play his defense, get in the passing lane without leaving your man open, then box out. Ugh. It’s not that difficult if you don’t panic.

Kiki’s mandate to freeze the shooting guard and small forward out of the offense has resulted in repeated blowouts.
Kiki and Thorn should not have a job past June. They have ruined this team and are poisoning the young players on this team.
I don’t see the Nets winning another game this SEASON at this rate. Not with the offense operating like this and the defense being non existent.

The Nets are not getting VC back. First they would never admit their mistake. Second, Orlando would not trade him. They made their commitment to him for this season and need him.
He’s on their bench because of a separated shoulder. Prior to that he was playing poorly (20% over last 4 games) after an ankle injury near the beginning of the year(which seemed to greatly impede his play.

The plays Lee creates on both ends are ignored, because of this teams record, however I notice it. Kudos to him
by Jerrod on Jan 16, 2010 1:41 AM EST reply actions
If Proky was official (maybe by deadlin?) they would not need to admit their mistake because they could claim they were under orders to cut salary. If they tried to get Andersen back, they’d have to admit their mistake, cuz they fought for Lee as a throw in and were willing to give up Andersen to get him.
I think the Magic would seriously consider it. The owner loved Lee and they weren’t willing to throw Lee in w/o Andersen… that’s how highly they thought of Lee/less than highly they thought of Carter.
Sure they were taking advantage of their leverage over a team desperate to dump salary, but they were still competing with other teams trying to get Carter. I think they would consider it… especially if we maybe threw in our 2nd rd pick this year, plus expirings who might actually help them for the rest of the year.

One really back Quarter and it was over – rest was pretty competertive. Humphries trade looks like a good bit of business. He is a good addition and plays rough and tough. Hoefully his attitude becomes infectious. I think that these losses are really kicking the confidence of the guys who have been through it from the start, some some new blood that doesn’t have the same scares is much needed.
…and no i don’t blame CDR for the mess the club is in. I like the kid and think he has taken too much of it all (the losses and the fans) too much to heart. There are a lot of things wrong with this ball club right now, and CDR is not one of them.
by Scott on Jan 16, 2010 5:49 AM EST reply actions
If the Nets could only be as intense as in the first quarter.
Let’s not forget that 92 out of 105 points were scored by players who will be here next season. Let’s not give up on this team. Let’s not forget that a second year player scored 27 points yesterday, Harris played well, Yi had a double-double, and Humphries, a player which we got from practically nothing, scored 15 and grabbed 8 rebounds. We have seen, for the first time, Yi moving to the Centre position for some minutes, and he played well.
As you can see, our problem is not our starting 5, which by the way, are young and still improving. We do not have good bench players. Other than Humphries yesterday, who actually contributed?
That’s the problem. Our problem isn’t CDR, Lee, and Harris. Our problem is Hassel, Quinn, Simmons, etc. We are outscored, every night, when the second unit comes in. This is why I hate people getting on the starters. Do not expect every starter to score 20 points every game. To win, a team needs to have the following (rough averages naturally):
2 starters with 20 points each
2 starters with at least 10 points
1 good sixth man with 15
The bench dividing 25 points between them and players who can defend
The Nets’ problem is that we do not have those 25 points, and no decent defence.
by Carlos on Jan 16, 2010 7:00 AM EST reply actions
Carlos,
Real Good point about our lacking second unit. Solution to that problem is to put both Lee and CDR on the bench and let them play with that unit. Those two and Boone and Humphries with Dooling would be sufficient and then they can get as many shots as they desire. Hayes and TWilliams in the starting lineup would be refreshing.
by Adam on Jan 16, 2010 8:07 AM EST reply actions
The reason we don’t have a 2nd unit is because we don’t have a first unit. All of our wings are 6th men types. Lee is the typical defensive player with a good catch and shoot three pointer. CDR’s an off the bench scorer. Hayes is another catch and shoot guy. TWill’s… athletic.
by muwu on Jan 16, 2010 8:15 AM EST reply actions

There are times on defense when the Nets players look like they have no idea at all what to do. How hard is it to find your guy and stick to him. That stretch when the Pacers scored 15 straight points was absolutely pathetic. I just can’t tell: Do the guys not know what to do? Or do they know what to do but just don’t care enough to do it?
by PA Net on Jan 16, 2010 8:34 AM EST reply actions
I think Kiki believes the garbage that comes out of his mouth: they gave great effort and it was only 3 minutes that destroyed us! Wow. He is dillusional. Humphries had more impact in one third the minutes than Yi. Yi shoots 5 – 13, and is lost on defense, giving up 3 after 3, yet he gets 35 minutes. When Hayes is healthy and fully ready, the starters should be Harris, Lee, Hayes, Humphries and Lopez. Yi and CDR would be better off the bench. Humphries sets a tone, plays more aggressively, compliments Lopez better and gives the opposing bigs something to think about. God, I love the way he goes after rebounds.

IF CDR is worthless or average like some of you suggest on this and other threads, I do hope the Nets will trade him to another team. It would be a merciful chance for CDR to move on with his career and development.
On the Nets team, CDR is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. Not sourgraping it, but CDR is lately castigated for trying to play as his coach tells him; which results in depleted stats (for him and the team). Really, what does a player do in this situation? As for CDR’s skills, I hope we all get to see what kind of player he will be in a different system that capitalizes on his talent. I think he’ll be fine.

The Twin towers played an excellent moment in this game: Yi had two defenses and passed ball, Lopez dribbled ball in to get two defenses then passed ball, Yi got ball without D to make a dunk!
Lopez is strong and smart, Yi is quick moving and jump. This two talls are NETS future.

Yi is not a starting forward in the NBA.
He regularly gets beat off the dribble, his shooting is erratic to say the least, he has weak hands, and no court awareness. He doesn’t have it – period. Time to forget about the Dirk Nowitzki comparisons and face facts – the team needs a power forward.
Lee and CDR need a mentor, a guy willing to work with them – not Harris flying around all over the place and winding up on the floor every 2 minutes. Having Harris on the court with Lee and CDR is like going to a pick up game with a bunch of kids. Everyone is a star and if you pass the ball you never get it back. Its a bad combination. Either Harris learns to become a leader or the Nets should break up this combination.
If Humphries could learn to finish at the basket – he wouldn’t be half bad. He’s a good defender and rebounder – light years better than Yi on defense.

Why do some of you guys continue to analyze the current team as if something could be done to improve it? Playing one of these no talent bums over the other, etc. The team and organization as currently constituted is an absolute joke and embarassment to the league. Maybe they have a few young building blokes, but hope and potential can’t always be counted on, if fact they usually can’t be.
The team also probably let it’s best asset go earlier in the season in coach Frank. If you can’t see how much better they played as a unit under him than the current crop of coaches, you are absolutely delusional. They were in almost every game down to the wire, and that was with a team that couldn’t beat an AAU squad, one composed of players that don’t even get minutes anymore on this sorry team. So the starters and so-called building blocks come back and now the Nets are getting blitzed by 30 every night and giving up 70 plus points in the first half for Christ’s sake, unbelievable! They could have lost some of these games by 50 plus if the other teams didn’t back off. The fact that Kiki can even defend these efforts by looking back at the first quarter of the game is comical. LF was always honest too. When the team stunk, he told you so. Another sign of a bright basketball mind and good coach (like a Parcells or Bobby Knight always told you when the team stunk, and Frank was molded by these guys).
The only bright spot is that the future can be significantly better with the new owner, but that’s only if they don’t screw it up, and if it’s Thorn and Kiki around I wouldn’t bet on them doing the right thing. I don’t think a marquis free agent will come here if they set the all-time futility record, something I didn’t believe was possible, but now I’m even having second thoughts. That means they would have to get lucky with the draft balls and then select the right guy on top of it. It’s still a very long way to go and no sure thing.
But please, in the meantime, stop looking for anything good out of this current group of players. They don’t deserve your time or effort for the joke they have become.

The season is trash, so let’s not fire anyone and focus on locking up that #1 draft pick.
After all, the Cavs admitted to doing it to get Lebron (google that) so it’s perfectly acceptable.
