Nets Waive Williams After Drug Arrest

Shawne Williams turned himself in to Memphis police Friday after being charged with four counts of conspiracy to sell cocaine and another four counts of possession of codeine with intent to sell, one of 24 people rounded up in what police called a "significant" narcotics trafficking operation. Just before news broke, the Nets announced they had waived the forward they acquired from Dallas on Monday.

I have a feeling Boone is either not going to play tonight cause their is a trade in the works, or we are seeing Josh Boones last game.

So now we have 2 open spots? What was the point of the trade?
by LetsGoNets on Jan 15, 2010 3:19 PM EST reply actions
We now have one spot (14 on the roster). This is done for one of 3 reasons:
1) A pending deal that will bring back 1 for 0, 2 for 1, or 3 for 2.
2) They negotiated a slightly discounted buy-out.
3) They want the roster spot to sign some D-Leaguers to 10-day contracts.

@LetsGoNets to get a younger 4 who can rebound and score better, and get out from under Najera’s contract

Good. The last we need is another bad apple hanging around our young guys.
by Belarus on Jan 15, 2010 3:25 PM EST reply actions
They have one spot available. Is this a boozer thing or something not yet on the radar. It is Rod’s MO to do something after the Boston debacle.
by netsnuts on Jan 15, 2010 3:25 PM EST reply actions
Probably a D-league call up. After last night’s Utah – Cleveland game everyone is going to want their own version of Sundiata Gaines.
Morris Almond?
by Tin Man on Jan 15, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions
By the way I really wish we would have gotten d. Blair in the draft this sucks
by netsvc on Jan 15, 2010 3:27 PM EST reply actions
I could see them signing Morris Almond, he’s a shooter, which they need and he’s head and shoulders above the rest of the D-League.
by gsloots on Jan 15, 2010 3:28 PM EST reply actions
Well with this sudden development after saying they wanna look at him, something must be up. Maybe a two for one trade or signing someone from the d-league after sundiana gaines gave the d-league a gigantic dose of credibility last night. D-league’s not looking so amateur after that cle uta game huh?

Unless Shawne did something to instigate this move, I am extremely disappointed in the NETS brass. I highly doubt we are making a 2 for 1 trade as we have no assets worth two players…….
by Adam on Jan 15, 2010 3:34 PM EST reply actions
I don’t know about Almond….Isn’t he a nut?
I thought the Nets are getting rids of nuts, but still have a few in T. Williams and CDR (who I think is a nut job in all seriousness).
by Rocket Scientist on Jan 15, 2010 3:35 PM EST reply actions
Oh yeah and I could care less that they waived this bum named Shawne…never did anything in the NBA except steal money that was given to him…..never would have worked to be anything in the pros…thinks he already something special (in a gangsta sense)…..doesn’t want to be a professional….so bye.
Why does someone named Paolo say “and get out from under Najera’s contract”? Does Paolo know Najera is gone, and now the Nets are under Humphries shorter contract? By the way, loved the Humphries armbar across the neck of Big Baby. It’s been a long time since a Net big has done something like that.
by Rocket Scientist on Jan 15, 2010 3:41 PM EST reply actions
I was excited about giving this Shawne a chance…..I have a strange feeling that we will be moving a bigger named player than Boone….
by NetFan48 on Jan 15, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions
@Net Income
2 for 1? …. I hope not another 2 point guards for Josh Boone :S
I still am dazed at the logic of getting Chris Quinn which filled-up a roster spot after waiving Rafer Alston.

Great. One less jerk on the bench. Again, I hate to sound like a broken record, but I dis-respect anyone who has God given talent and wastes it completely. This guy will be bagging groceries at Publix in Pompano Beach within 18 months. Now we can bring in some sleeper from the D-League on a ten day contract, and keep doing that, to see if we can steal someone with talent for the league minimum. The 15th guy on the roster should be someone interesting.
by Paul Erstein on Jan 15, 2010 4:08 PM EST reply actions
How about Josh and Bobby to Utah for Boozer and 2 additional contracts (nor sure who else from Utah would fit or if the numbers work)
or
Are we going Russian in honor of our new owner and cap be damned: Bobby and Josh for AK47 and two additional contracts (again don’t have numbers)
What is in rumor mill?
by netsnuts on Jan 15, 2010 4:09 PM EST reply actions
@Rocket Scientist
Almond has a rep of not being the most coachable kid in the world but that shouldn’t be a problem on the Nets since there isn’t much coaching going on anyway:)
He was a prolific scorer in college and is currently at 29 PPG in the D-League. He has decent size and is a pretty good athlete. He would be a perfect project for 3 win team.
by Tin Man on Jan 15, 2010 4:25 PM EST reply actions
@ Dirt – In order:
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Josh Boone
Trenton Hassell
Devin Harris
Courtney Lee
Jarvis Hayes
Tony Battie
Bobby Simmons
by diehardNFFLbarnone on Jan 15, 2010 4:49 PM EST reply actions
Why would the Jazz send Boozer (an expiring) to the Nets for similar expiring contracts? There is no cost savings to them if that would happen……
by Adam on Jan 15, 2010 4:58 PM EST reply actions
Let’s bring in Almond or Dwayne Jones. Jones is 6-11, 211, is averaging 17.8 ppg, 15.3 rpg, and 2.3 bpg. He’s at 63% from the field and a decent 76% at the line. Anyone have a scouting report on this guy?
by Jim on Jan 15, 2010 5:40 PM EST reply actions
so we didn’t waive him because a trade we waived him because he is just like swat lol
by matt on Jan 15, 2010 6:06 PM EST reply actions
Well so much for the “trade incoming” theories. Look at the updated post. They didn’t waive him because a trade is imminent, they waived him because he’s a moron and is currently sitting in a Memphis jail cell. Career over.
by JST on Jan 15, 2010 6:06 PM EST reply actions
unbelievable – the Nets are a magnet for great character guys. I was so hopeful that the news he’d been waived meant a trade was imminent. Now it looks like it was just in response to the arrest.
by fastbreak on Jan 15, 2010 6:31 PM EST reply actions
@ diehard
very interesting list. if cdr gets traded we better get something good in return. hes playing too well to just give away.
by VC3 on Jan 15, 2010 6:45 PM EST reply actions
Both Kerber and Dave D said the Nets waived Shawne Williams because he was 20lbs over weight…and then we find out he’s been arrested and is in a Memphis jail. That is week reporting by 2 of our beat reporters.
by pawley on Jan 15, 2010 6:50 PM EST reply actions
If the Wizards are considering voiding Arenas’s contract, I sure hope the NETS are looking into this possibility with Shawne! His indescretion is far worse than Gilbert’s.
by Adam on Jan 15, 2010 7:17 PM EST reply actions
Bobby simmons would be perfect in a one fir two…wizards are dealing….Jameson although old is pretty awesome.
by Andy on Jan 15, 2010 7:30 PM EST reply actions
No one in the right mind will pick up B. Simmons’ contract.
by bill on Jan 15, 2010 7:40 PM EST reply actions
@ Tin Man
I had have no knowledge about Almond…only that he was a shooter coming out of college….
the “nut” reference was a corny attempt to be funny by me…a play on words….get it…Almond….nut…..an Almmond is a nut
Oh yeah..I’m SHOCKED (sarcasm) about the updated news about the guy named Shawne I called a bum before I knew about the drug thing. You know, sometimes you watch a dumb youtube video made by this self-glorified thug and you can just tell when a guy just has no character for anything that is correct.
Watching this guy flaunt himself after being such a waste and cavorting with criminals is a joke and was all I needed to know in making a judgement even before the info came down. I mean, not allowed to be with the Dallas team? What kind of mental case is the guy? I guess we know now. A criminal thug bum (whose has stolen millions from Indiana, Dallas, and now the Nets).
CDR shoulkd further zip it when talking about how he and “his bud” are misunderstood good people from the streets. He is only putting himself in a bad light as well. You know, CDR is coming off more and more like a head case anyway with a few screws loose, and he’s not even that good, so he has to watch it.

I take back my remarks about CDR. I’m sorry…

Somehow I think the Mavericks and the Nets knew about this. So did the NBA.
No wonder the league keeps going down and down and down…

I hope a Shaun Williams, Shawon Williams, Chone Williams, Shawn Williams, or any other bastardization of Sean Williams gets traded/signed/drafted into town and one day find themselves in jail, thus proving the curse the AD of Boston College placed on all S. Williams when he kicked the original SWill off BC. All other S. Williams have been warned.
by Will J on Jan 15, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions
they should trade terrence williams, with devin harris and boone.
those three together will probably help the nets score good players in return.
why should they keep devin if they are going to obtain John Wall on draft night???
keep keyon and move on.

I wouldn’t hold your breath for a 2 for 1. Likely the Nets management sniffed that Shwill was going to be arrested and waited until it was imminent. Since we have a roster spot open, it is possible to get a 2 for 1 deal…but thats not the reason why he was waived…
