Could a D-League Team Beat the Nets?

Marc Stein wrote recently the Nets might audition some D-Leaguers after the trade deadline. Ridiculous Upside, the D-League blog, thinks fans shouldn't dis the "D". It suggests that in a game vs. the Nets, D-League All-Stars would have a decent shot. On RU's list: Rod Benson, who was in training camp with the Nets in 2007, and Morris Almond, the super shooter who plays for the Nets' D-League affiliate in Springfield.

WE would crush a d league team what kind of article is this

by ben on Jan 14, 2010 8:02 AM EST reply actions

HAHA it’s entirely plausible. The Nets couldn’t outrebound a team of oompa-loompas. The Nets couldn’t defend a nursing home’s team.

by muwu on Jan 14, 2010 8:09 AM EST reply actions

Is kiki coaching?
Is lee starting?
I don’t know if the nets would win

by djheavyduty on Jan 14, 2010 8:09 AM EST reply actions

We don’t have a roster spot available, and we have enough players to play right now.

We have talent on the Nets and it will surface any day now.

If a roster spot opens up in the future, yeah maybe check out one of these ‘D’ league prospects, but right now, no thanks.

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 8:13 AM EST reply actions

I heard of kicking a team when it’s down, but this kind of talk is borderline sadism.

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 8:14 AM EST reply actions

It’s entirely 100% plausible. Some of the guys on d-league teams are guys who have shown great signs in the league. Ian Mahinmi who went for 15 pts and 9 rebs and a highlight block on courtney lee on us played in the d-league a lot. Malik Hairston who played a lot for the Spurs last year is with the toros. Dwayne jones is a huge force there averaging 17 pts and 15 rebs or something.

by muwu on Jan 14, 2010 8:18 AM EST reply actions

We still have the second half of the season to go, so we can’t have Nets fans bailing out now.

Just like we don’t like or respect a team that quits after the first half cause their down big, we don’t consider fans real fans if they quit on their team because they are down big.

Sure it’s been rough watching this team, but I will be watching and rooting tomorrow against Indiana.

Better days are right around the corner.

Lets go Nets.

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 8:28 AM EST reply actions

@Mike
It’s only a matter of time before they have roster spots open. Other trades are on the way although for me, the “trade” of Rafer Alston, Sean Williams and Eduardo Najera for Chris Quinn, Kris Humphries, Shawne Williams, a second round pick in 2012 and $640,000 in cash is enough…particularly if Williams gets his act together.

by Net Income on Jan 14, 2010 8:35 AM EST reply actions

The article is completely off base and is just another pot shot at the Nets.

This is like those hilarious comments made by college basketball announcers every now and then claiming that a college team could compete with the bottom feeders in the NBA… It’s just plain wrong.

by NetsForce on Jan 14, 2010 8:47 AM EST reply actions

We are going to be playing Harris, Lopez, Yi, CDR, CLee, Humphries, Hayes, Dooling, Quinn, T-Will, Boone and Hassel.

That is 12 players. And maybe even Shawnee once he gets into shape.

We have enough players. Let them play…

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 8:53 AM EST reply actions

The Nets deserve these kind of insults. And if the D leaguers played hard and actually cared to win well they probably would.

by theBurgerKing on Jan 14, 2010 9:06 AM EST reply actions

With the way this team is coached, they could be run off the floor by some hungry d leaguers.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 14, 2010 9:07 AM EST reply actions

I think Kiki is the right man at the right time for this current situation.

Until we get a “real” coach, I’m with Kiki 100%.

“Hang in there Kiki and teach the young kids what it means to be a pro, and not just on the court”.

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 9:14 AM EST reply actions

Some D-League teams draw more fans to games in the old Swamp.

by Jersey Pride on Jan 14, 2010 9:21 AM EST reply actions

Than in the Old Swamp ^^^^

by Jersey Pride on Jan 14, 2010 9:21 AM EST reply actions

Agree that the Nets deserve articles like this. And it’s not entirely the coaching. It’s obvious the players are not committed to defense. Everyone let’s their man blow by. No pride right now.

by Dillon on Jan 14, 2010 9:30 AM EST reply actions

The Nets individual “pride” had to be stripped down, and is hopefully going to be replaced with team pride, one way or the other.

One by one these players are going to come around, or they are going to be shipped out.

I think most will come around.

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 9:36 AM EST reply actions

They do the same thing in the U.S. Marines. They break you down then build you back up as a “team” player.

Lets go SGT. KIKI…

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 9:38 AM EST reply actions

Did Yi score 18 or 19? I see in the upper corner left, it says 19. Which one is right?

Celtics 111, Nets 87
Harris: 15p, 6a, 5-13fg
Lopez: 18p, 10r, 4b
Yi: 19p, 3r, 6-12fg
Nets’ Record: 3-35

by james on Jan 14, 2010 9:39 AM EST reply actions

Mike,

I fail to see what Kiki is teaching these kids.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jan 14, 2010 9:48 AM EST reply actions

The article didn’t focus on Nets, because they boasted beating the 28th or so team in NBA.

However, it was that Jerk, Marc Stein, who started that wise crack about the Nets getting ready to recruit talent from the D-League, that gave the D-League an opening.

Of course it would get Nets out of their slump, just as Nets get top NBA teams, such as Celts, out of their slump.
Maybe 71-35 at halftime, Nets over D-League All-Stars

The better NBA teams only have 2-3 players better (much better) than a team like the current Nets.
However, the worst players on Nets – say Simmons, Quinn, Battie, Hassell and S. Williams would probably be stars in the D-League. The other 10 Nets would be of another League (NBA). No contest.

Regarding college teams, I would like to see current Kentucky starters if they could play together for 4-5 years compete with NBA.

I remember N. Carolina with Worthy, Perkins and their 3rd best player, named Jordan. Still they lost to my Ralph Sampson and UVA.

What is next, WNBA All-Stars vs. Nets? First they would have to beat a top High School men’s team.

by jerry25 on Jan 14, 2010 9:56 AM EST reply actions

I’m sure if the Nets played the D-League All-Stars in a 10 game series the All-Stars would win at least 2 games. Maybe 3 or even 4. What’s sadder tho, in another 10 game series, I’d bet an NCAA All-Star team would break even against the Nets.

by BrooklynJohnny on Jan 14, 2010 9:57 AM EST reply actions

The Nets have:
1. No team identidy… What are they? What the focus of the team (defensive, running, motion, etc)
2. No confidence…Due to the NBA record setting losing streak, the teams confidence is shaken and ability to win games is in disrepair.
3. No chemistry… Injuries have made this team bad and ultimately a “one on one” offense

Despite this, the D league team (however assembled) would get rolled by the Nets

by NBA is a Joke on Jan 14, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions

We need a veteran to come in here, slap these kids upside the head and tell them to stop feeling sorry for themselves.

by Dirt on Jan 14, 2010 10:02 AM EST reply actions

Well you guys can have your NCAA teams, and ‘D’ league teams and WNBA teams and fantasy teams, and leave us the Nets…

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 10:04 AM EST reply actions

@ Mike

I admire your optimism and sort of wish I had it.

But I think Kiki is a monster/joke. I think he’s doing a ton of damage. The players all hint that he’s a fool as a coach, and letting him run the team sends a bad message. How can we expect full development from a coach who doesn’t know how to coach? Who’s never developed anyone..and who no one in need of development can even take seriously.

by Paul B on Jan 14, 2010 11:02 AM EST reply actions

At this point, I’m all for buying out Battie and Simmons and giving a couple of D-leaguers a chance.

We’ve got nothing to lose and could maybe discover a diamond in the rough or two. Keep em cheap for next year.

by Paul B on Jan 14, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

i think D-League could beat Nets. It’s not because nets players are bad, but its because nets coach is bad….

by MayLay on Jan 14, 2010 11:07 AM EST reply actions

@Paul B;

Why don’t we just hold auditions at halftime.

If any of these ‘D’ leaguers were considered that “good”, they wouldn’t be in the ‘D’ league.

Contrary to popular belief, there are other teams in the NBA looking for “good” players. Why haven’t these teams plucked the ‘D’ league dry?

by Mike on Jan 14, 2010 11:09 AM EST reply actions

At this point of the season, I wont be surprised if the Nets do lose to the D-League team. That’s how bad we are playing…
Instead of getting better it looks like we’re getting worst after every game.

by LetsGoNets on Jan 14, 2010 11:26 AM EST reply actions

For what Battie and Simmons do for us, it couldn’t hurt to give a couple of guys a chance. Nothing to lose… Lots to gain. I’d bet money (if I had it) that at least one player in the D-League this year turns into an NBA rotation player. Will we be the one to pick him out? Maybe. Gotta try to find out.

by Paul B on Jan 14, 2010 11:29 AM EST reply actions

@Mike

Same reason Sean Marks has been in the nba for 10 years, it’s not always about pure talent

by muwu on Jan 14, 2010 11:31 AM EST reply actions

Has there been any talk of sending S. Williams to D-League to get in shape and some PT?

Unfortunately, D-League isn’t quite set up to serve their NBA affiliate. There is no guarantee that the DLeague coach would give out enough minute to S. Williams.

It would be a test for S Williams to behave professionally and do as told. If he doesn’t shape up, then ship him out (or buy out) before Feb. 18 deadline. Otherwise, he could be a nice tall addition at SF and would put pressure on TWill.

by jerry25 on Jan 14, 2010 11:39 AM EST reply actions

If Ratner is paying the Nets to lose to further embarrass this franchise, sure we could lose to anybody. Ratner’s money talks, everybody else walks.

by Isaac on Jan 14, 2010 12:13 PM EST reply actions

If they give the kind of effort they gave last night, sure they could be beaten. Yi could be tossed aside for easy lay ups and dunks by Rod Benson. ALmond could hit threes all day long as the Net wings slowly figure out their rotation. THis is a team without pride; a defeated team that is not prepared to play. This is a coach that does not have the temperment to coach. WHy are Yi and Lopez and Harris playing big minutes? He should have sat them all down and made them watch hungrier (do we have that?) players play. He is just padding Yi’s stats either to a) justify his belief in him or b) trade him (I hope). What kind of message is Yi getting when he still plays 39 minutes after he is a non factor in rebounding and defense and gets pushed around by West, Perkins, and Big Baby? What is the message to Harris when he lets Rondo school him? Hassel was the only Net that gave effort yesterday. He’s a pro. He has talent: the talent to be ready to play – something the other 8 Nets do not have.

by geo on Jan 14, 2010 12:16 PM EST reply actions

I think Hassell has earned himself an invite back next year… if he wants it. But they’ll probably trade him for a seat cushion or something in a week.

by Paul B on Jan 14, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Nets vs. the best D-league team, I would actually pay courtside to watch this farce. Watch Kiki’s creation bested by NCAA dropouts.

Actually, our current Nets team couldn’t beat the top 5 Olympic teams in intl play…

by JohnY on Jan 14, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

and give the cushion to Yi.

by Paul B on Jan 14, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

i believe a college team can beat the Nets!!!

imagine what D-league can do to them!?!?!?!?!

:D :D :D :D

funny article by the way

At the end of the day..it all fall on the players…whole Nets team has flaw…

by Akara on Jan 14, 2010 3:09 PM EST reply actions

James

WHy are you counting points? Who cares? Points on a bad team are meaningless. The more he scores, the worse we do (and the worse CDR does). Have you noticed that? WHy does he get so many shots? Free CDR!

by geo on Jan 14, 2010 3:16 PM EST reply actions

Answer: Did anybody see the 1st half night. Enough said.
Nice 3 rebounds for our 7 foot pf.

New Jersey team ranking:
1. St Patricks
2. St Anthony
3. Paterson Cath.
4. Nets

If you wanted to rate effort and watchability.

pc is way better than st anthony.

by tu vieja on Jan 14, 2010 3:36 PM EST reply actions

You are probably right. Would much prefer to watch that game then our Nets right now.

by netsnuts on Jan 14, 2010 3:59 PM EST reply actions

Great marketing idea:

Imagine these scrimmages:

The Nets vs Iowa Energy

OR

The Nets vs Kentucky Wildcats

The Mets would have more talent, but would not necessarily win against a well-coached team.

by NetsSince76 on Jan 14, 2010 4:13 PM EST reply actions

Sorry for the typo: that was “Nets” not “Mets” in the last post.

by NetsSince76 on Jan 14, 2010 4:14 PM EST reply actions

Next we are probably going to hear if a WNBA team can beat the Nets.

by Tal Barzilai on Jan 14, 2010 4:42 PM EST reply actions

Think about this. If me and 10 other posters on here started and played an expansion team in the NBA this season,at this point in the season, we’d only be 3 games back of the Nets.

Anyone still wanna discredit the d-league after how well sundiata gaines played today against cleveland?
