Getting from Despair to Hope

Art Garcia of NBA.com dives deep into the Nets' despair. The constant losing is taking its toll on the players. Even the prospect of a rich owner, all that cap space, all those draft picks and a brand new arena can't obscure the misery. Interestingly, Gregg Popovich and Richard Jefferson offer the most hope. Pop recalls starting 3-15 before Tim Duncan arrived while RJ notes turnarounds can happen fast.

That 3-15 team also had a good coach and David Robinson…so um…yeah….great comparison, Pop

David Robinson was out that year. Popovich was GM before firing the coach and assuming his duties.

Because David Robinson was injured that year they got Tim Duncan in the draft, so in one year they went from crap to Tim Duncan AND David Robinson.

I’ll never forget that season of the Spurs (I think it was the ’97 season)…… D. Robinson out for the year, they tank and win 20 games (a team that was consistently making the playoffs in the ’90s and almost made it to the Finals in ’95) and then they get the 1st pick (and the first pick was a good pick)….
I hope Spurs fans realize how f’ing lucky they were. I would give up a season anyday to get a future hall of famer.

Tim Duncan is not walking through the door, at least not in a Nets uniform.
by Ispartan on Jan 12, 2010 1:07 PM EST reply actions
Are they saying Brook Lopez is not Tim Duncan? So the Nets is still bad while Lopez is here.

I would love to trade Devin Harris yesterday, but the time is not right yet. His time to go will come, unless he stops feeling sorry for himself and leads this team on the court as well as off. If he can’t do it or doesn’t want to do it, I have no doubt Nets management will find someone who can and will.
They are probably working on it as we speak.
I love the quote last week from some inside source on the Nets, probably Kiki, which went something like this.
“Yeah, we are constantly having to talk Devin down from off the ledge”.
What a leader!!!

Unrelated:
Micheal Redd is out for the season again. I would love to have seen a team of Harris, Redd, Najera, Odom and Yao. They would have to forfeit the season.

so you’re trying to tell me the following year they didn’t have david robinson and popovich.
my comment was not in regard to the 3-15 season, it was what followed.

@Mike
Listen mike you don’t play all 82 games so you wouldn’t understand. Anybody on this team that is planning on staying in the long haul hasn’t had the pep talk yet is crazy. After you start a season 0-18 and have a record like we do how you expect players to come to work everyday with a Mcdonalds smile on they’re face. Everybody sleeping on Harris because his #’s are down from last year its not his fault. When you have team full of young guys with no NBA experience and only one real natural scorer things would be tuff on you too.
by mikee21 on Jan 12, 2010 2:25 PM EST reply actions
This team won’t look the same next season… Don’t go crazy over them losing.. They’ll have a top pick and a lot of new faces. I’d probably trade harris too at this point. If your not getting lebron james then they need to move some core guys because these guys don’t quite fit eachother. Plus we have to figure out the PF and C spot because your really going to need a guy that can guard and be a stopper. Unless they got a guy at sg or sf like Gerald Wallace but i’d rather see them get a solid BIG
by ChrisGNetfan on Jan 12, 2010 2:26 PM EST reply actions
and Brook has to learn when to shoot and when not to..He throws up some ugly shots…He needs some basic post moves..nothing crazy…It seems like he goes the wrong way all the time off the pump fake or turnaround…I like him but he needs to improve…and hopefully he puts on more weight..hes young so that looks possible

the Pacers could get the #1 pick too..calm down Nets fan lolzz

Player consistency day in and day out lets go….
Spurs…Tony Parker, Manu, Duncan. Reliable scorers Day in and Day out
Forget this list point is EVERY TEAM in the NBA has two or more consistent scorers on there team or a superstar DAY IN AND DAY OUT. CONSISTENCY.
Anybody willing to run threw the Nets roster and point out our CONSISTENT SCORER "DAY IN AND DAY OUT?????
Instead of blamiming Devin Harris for our record yes yess ANYONE??? who’s up for the challenge? I guarantee y’all can’t!

Regarding Devin’s leadership – he has consistently made it clear that he wants to be a NET in both words and actions. Obviously he is frustrated but who wouldn’t be. At least he is not pointing fingers and bailing.
Regarding Devin’s numbers. He is down in assists and down in scoring – steals, TOs and rebounds are basically the same. The assist difference is easy if you look at Hoopdata stats (I have way to much time on my hands this week!). His assists from shots less then 16 feet are up (3.8 vs 3.2). His assists from shots 16 feet and out are way down (2.0 vs 3.8). Why….because we can’t shoot. Last year his primary pass targets where making these shots at more than 40% (Vince, Hayes, healthy Kenyon, hot Simmons). This year it is closer to 30% (CLee struggling, Simmons past it, Kenyon and Hayes hurt).
Regarding his scoring, he is bad from long range (has never been more then average) but despite the chucker comments he is actually shooting nearly one less long shot per game. Where the real difference comes is inside 10 feet. He is both shooting a lower percentage and getting to the free throw line less. Fact is if your outside shooters can not hit the broad side of the barn the other team packs the middle and takes away the drive and Brook inside (also frustrated). Hardly a surprise. How long do you keep beating yourself against this brick wall.
So get some shooters who can shoot. Devin’s assists go back up immediately. The middle opens up and both Devin and Brook thrive. Devin is a 20 and 8 guy and a year-in-year-out borderline all-star.
I believe fully that we needed to get rid of Vince’s contract and his play in Orlando reinforces this decision (and with Vince we would be 13-24 with no hope of playoffs, no hope of Wall, no cap space and less picks). And I still have faith in CLEE long term. That noted, if we had taken the original deal and gotten JJ Redick and kept Ryan insted of taking CLEE we would have better rebounding, much better outside shooting, more wins and happier fans.

Nice Jay. Nice. i just pulled Devin’s Jersey from the fireplace in the nick of time. I have you to thank.

Really people, Harris is not that bad but he is not a do it all type of player who can carry a team on his own. He needs talent around him. He would thrive in a better setup.
by Tony on Jan 12, 2010 3:51 PM EST reply actions
Jay,
That’s one of the best posts I’ve read on this site. So many fans are fickled and emotional. But you pulled facts that support your argument as opposed to just saying I hate this guy or I hate that guy. Great post..

I would say to Jay and all of Jay fan’s, who has been the Nets biggest disappointment this year, by a mile?
Answer = Devin Harris.
Who’s play has gotten worse then gotten better?
Answer = Devin Harris.
Who is supposed to be the leader of this team.
Answer = Devin Harris.
Who was Nets management shopping and willing to trade last June?
Answer = See above.
I rest my case…

Plus I love how you defend Harris and neatly blame his teammates, especially Courtney Lee. LMAO
by Mike on Jan 12, 2010 4:31 PM EST reply actions
@Mike
So VC is a disappointment on the magics too this season because his #‘s are way down from last year. He’s soon to come off the bench as JJ Redick replaces him so what does that say. And he has a bunch of talent around him Harris doesn’t so what’s VC’s excuse for his #’s this season?
by mikee21 on Jan 12, 2010 4:41 PM EST reply actions
@mikee21;
Carter is getting old, Harris is 26 years old. There are a lot of players on bad teams who still play good. Harris has not played good.
I don’t hate Harris, I just think he is not a good point guard and his attitude stinks. This could and should be his team. Add on all the missed games due to injury and I think it’s time to move on…
Yes, I don’t feel sorry for D.H. I feel more sorry for his teammates who need a leader, in the worse way.
by Mike on Jan 12, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions
Understandable, but at the same time I “don’t” get how his attitude stinks not one time did he blame or point fingers at anyone.

In Lee Child’s novel, Nothing to Lose, there are two towns in Colorado, one called Despair and the other called Hope. They are about 17 miles apart. I hope this helps.

Mike,
Even if all that you say is correct, Jays post speaks to facts and the possible reasons why his numbers are down. Some people don’t like the type of shoot first pt guard that Harris is. That’s fine but there aren’t a lot of Chris Pauls and Jason Kidds around. For the money, he’s a bargain. My biggest issue with him is that he’s not as good as he thinks he is and he can’t stay healthy. But I’d take him over 70% of the point guards in the league.
by supreme on Jan 12, 2010 5:39 PM EST reply actions
@Akara,
The Spurs didn’t get Parker and Manu til much later. I understand the comparison, but, wow after Robinson return? Two HOF’ers? Can’t see that happening here, but I definitely believe the Brook has played, and a good coach, we’ll have a 180 degee season in 2010.

@ supreme;
Yeah you might be totally right. Maybe I don’t nothing. One question though. How come Nets management is down on him and have been putting out feelers since June 2009?
