Done with Sean, But Not with Shawne

Rod Thorn told beat writers Monday the Nets want to take a look at Shawne Williams. It had been widely expected the Nets would waive the talented but troubled (sound familiar?) 6'9" swingman. Shawne Williams has been exiled by the Mavs all season after being dumped by the Pacers. Both called him a detriment to team chemistry. Chris Douglas-Roberts and Williams were teammates at Memphis.

The Nets just get more interesting by the day. Somehow they find a way to keep you watching.
Maybe CDR will feel better having his ex-teammate around.
Maybe Shawne learns his lesson and tows the line.
I guess I will just have to keep watching to find out.

I wonder if all that talk about cutting Shawne immediately, was a smoke screen all long. to keep Dallas from charging us more?

That’s because you have no appreciation for the deeply absurd.
Funny, this morning I was thinking about comparing Sean and Shawne’s troubled pasts, but said, Nah, he’s going to be gone by the end of the day.
I wonder what number he will wear????

The Nets are paying his salary and can cut him anytime they want.
I want to know what CDR thinks of all this.
Maybe CDR can “coach” him and keep him out of trouble.
He sure looks like a tough customer, something even the “bad boy” Nets lacked.
Can Marvin Williams be next?

Trade Keyon Dooling now as a number of teams are looking for veteran point guards. I recognize he is playing well, yet let’s put the pressure back on Devin to produce as we expect him to. Quinn can back him up and hit the open shot when needed.
Ideally, if we can obtain a first rounder for Keyon, that would be sweet!

His draft preview:
“Strengths: Has tremendous versatility, at 6-8 Shawne can play from the 1-thru-4 positions … Extremely long with a 7-3 wingspan … Advanced offensive game, really understands how to play … Great one on one skills offensively … Great vision, passing skills … Good ball handler, almost second nature … Can create for himself or others off the dribble drive … Consistent jump shot, with range out to three point … A highlight reel waiting to happen … Extremely long wingspan makes him a terrific rebounder and shot blocker … Good competitor, doesn’t back down from a challenge, as he showed squaring off with Adam Morrison after being pushed … His body is not far from being NBA ready …
Weaknesses: Low-release point on his jumper could cause problems at the next level … Will need to develop better defensive technique, more intensity … Quickness is very good, but won’t stand out on the next level … Still must add strength and conditioning "

Sean will truly be missed by a lot of us – it is s hame we didn’t have a real coaching staff while he was here to try and teach him the disicpline he desperately needs. I really hope Dallas gives him a look and that Jason Kidd starts to mold him into the player he is capable of being. With a great coach in Rick Carlisle there too, this could truly be the right spot for him.

Aside from our young core of Brook, Devin, Yi, TWill, CDR and Lee – we may have an entirely new roster within the month.
And of that list – I have a feeling only Brook, Yi and CDR are untouchable at the moment.
Devin would make sense for Toronto – if they were going to deal Bosh…..but we would really have to pray that we get the top pick in draft. Because if not – we are really in trouble next year.

As has been reported several times by several people, the only untouchables are Yi, Lopez and Harris. CDR is NOT untouchable and considering how reasonable his contract is, he is very likely to be dealt in a big trade. He is very valuable in relation to his contract.

Isaac: I know you won’t change your view. I rooted for Sean Williams too. But you have to face facts. This is not a child. He is a grown-up who they gave millions to. Why would he Nets not do what they could? The ultimate responsibility lies with the individual. The onus was on him and he made a conscious decision to take the money and not run. Dime a dozen. He’s done.
About Shawne Williams:
Net Income: After reading Dave D., methinks this is a short term commitment…something to do with something else.
I agree. He is not even allowed to be with the Mavs. If you can’t behave in NBA player heaven – then well you just don’t care about being a contributor to an NBA team. I also don’t think he is a positive contributor to society. Unfortunately I think he is one of those guys who is wrapped up in being a hard-ass thug from the streets and can’t balance that nonsense with responsibly. He’s already got his millions and he’s done.. Check out the lame video about the "Shawne Williams story" – can you believe the nonsense hype with no back-up.

Another nut job joins the circus.
And as far as I’m concerned no one is untouchable on a team with a 3 and 34 record.
And now that they are going to start digging around in Ratner’s dirty laundry – you can bet they’re going to find all kinds of goodies. One good scandal could delay Brooklyn for years to come. Which would relegate the Nets to a continued limbo status (read: RED INK) for the duration.
Jus think, a really messy scandal might give the Russian cold feet.

He is going to be a very very good player – particularly as a 6th man in the future for us if these moves play out. Regardless of the stars you have in your starting 5 – you need that scoring option off the bench as your 6th man. That is why Ben Gordon got such a big deal.

CDR is at best a one dimensional role player who would be on the deep end of a bench on any good NBA team."
CDR’s current season stats would suggest that the statement above is misinformed and unfounded.
Per NBA.com, CDR’s current performance stats/rankings:
- among all sophomore Forwards
- among all sophomore players, for All positions
- among ALL NBA players, with an .851 ft%
+13.64 efficiency rtg
Per game averages:
15.5 ppg; 4.40 rpg; 1.9 ast pg
Pretty good overall stats for a 2nd year player and they still belie CDR’s passion for the game and winning.
Even with the current offensive focus shifting away from CDR (which drops his stats and IMO undermines his career), you can’t objectively support calling CDR a “one dimensional player”.
I have no doubt that CDR would be a greatly valued young member of any number of other good NBA teams. As a long time CDR fan, I would love for him to have the chance to prove my point.

CDR has a nice attitude, but it hasnt won us any games… I saw someone post that he is one of the better SG’s in the NBA… Yeah okay… His stats are inflated by how horrible our team is at scoring. We are Last in almost EVERY offensive stat. Of course Chris is going to average around 12-16 points. We have no scorers on the team… He really needs to develop some defense and a reliable outside shot before he is someone you think of as UNTOUCHABLE.
After reading this think it over before you respond.

We are supposed to be discussing S. Williams, not CDR (who isn’t going anywhere).
I like Adam’s idea of sending S. Williams to the DLeague to prove himself and get in shape. NBA has to move to dedicated DLeague teams that serve their NBA sponsor.
I assume Nets didn’t buy him out because (besides chance that he might be really good in a new environment) he could be used as part of a trade before Feb. 19. Why not take a chance that some other team would be forced to pay his remaining salary? Proky and Thorn aren’t stupid.
I wonder if there is a waiting period before S. Williams can be traded?
