Nets Make Moves Official

The Nets officially announced Monday morning that they have waived Sean Williams and traded Eduardo Najera to Dallas for Kris Humphries and Shawne Williams. Humphries has played in 25 games this season, with season highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds...also his per-40 minute averages. Shawne Williams had been asked to stay away from the Mavs and is expected to be waived by the Nets immediately.

Which was the worse draft pick, Sean Williams or Shawne Williams?

by Chris2 on Jan 11, 2010 11:02 AM EST reply actions

I feel bad for Sean Williams. I hope he’ll eventually find a way to get back in the League, and make it work.
Welcome Kris!

(by the way, is Brandon Bass still available?)

by Gerard Himself on Jan 11, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

@Chris2
Both picked at #17, both 23. Hard call. Nets did get some value out of Sean; Pacers got nothing the court and only two second round picks for Shawne.

I think Kris Humphries is going to be a nice fit on this team. I think he definitely will have a big role – and play 25 minutes a night. Unloading Najera for a much younger guy who can contribute was a great move by Rod/Kiki.

And I think Nets got more value out of Sean than Pacers/Mavs got out of Shawne Williams. Don’t forget Sean had a good rookie year and was heavily marketed by the team that first year. To the best of my knowledge, Shawne was never marketed or productive on the court.

by Ryan243 on Jan 11, 2010 11:13 AM EST reply actions

I was a fan of Sean….he could have been a beast if played more and consistantly.
Otherwise I’m really excited about Humphries…I got a feeling that he can be a good addition off the bench after some time…something like a difference-maker.

Go Nets!

by Gyniko on Jan 11, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions

I also feel bad for Sean Williams it seems like he wasnt liked by the management and he has a lot of talent. Maybe Dallas will sign him since his rookie year Jason Kidd made him look amazing.
Sean Williams the next Dennis Rodman

by Randy Oreens on Jan 11, 2010 11:20 AM EST reply actions

There was a time in his rookie year when Sean was seen as a really hot prospect. I think I remember Utah badly wanting him. I wonder if we could have flipped him for Millsap or Brewer if we traded him his rookie year.

by Chris2 on Jan 11, 2010 11:21 AM EST reply actions

Nets wanted Humphries. Talked to Raptors about him last summer before he was traded to the Mavs. Obviously, this deal was something the Nets wanted. They were willing to accept Shawne Williams’ contract, which cost them $1.6 million for the rest of the year.

by Net Income on Jan 11, 2010 11:25 AM EST reply actions

This guy is a hard worker, can rebound well, is an ok defender, and can push people around. Definitely is a type of player that we do not have on this team. He’s a big step up from Najera.

by Adam on Jan 11, 2010 11:31 AM EST reply actions

Sean Williams is done in the league, the D league didn’t event want him. Good riddance…

by johnny on Jan 11, 2010 11:32 AM EST reply actions

This guy is just another unknown face on a bench of a team of losers.

Nothing more, nothing less.

by Trenton on Jan 11, 2010 11:43 AM EST reply actions

Now that Sean is without a team, he has all the time to dance! If you’ve been watching the Nets last year, you can see him just dancing during warm-ups instead of warm-up and shoot balls.

Do you see the established players dance during warm-ups???!!!

by kuljo on Jan 11, 2010 11:47 AM EST reply actions

@kuljo

Lebron?

by Hab on Jan 11, 2010 11:54 AM EST reply actions

@ Kuljo

Lebron, Kobe, Shaq, VC…

So yes, yes I have seen “established players” do that during warm ups.

Give us a break.

by Trenton on Jan 11, 2010 11:54 AM EST reply actions

Kid hasn’t even played a minute for the Nets and already we have someone denigrating his talents. A proud tradition continues!!!

by Net Income on Jan 11, 2010 11:55 AM EST reply actions

Lopez / Boone
Yi / Humphries
CDR / Hayes
Lee / T-Will
Harris / Dooling

the lineup is purified.

And I think the new lineup should be:

Lopez
Yi
Hayes
CDR
Harris

by jarkid on Jan 11, 2010 11:58 AM EST reply actions

I don’t like it that there are rumors about trading Boone. As a back-up, he’s not that bad. He’s willing to work, and sure he can’t shoot, but he can get some boards. I hope he stays.

by Gerard Himself on Jan 11, 2010 12:08 PM EST reply actions

Humphries is a bum there is nothing special about him.you all will be wanting him off the team soon.

by 1milord on Jan 11, 2010 12:08 PM EST reply actions

Sean Williams, unless he gets his drinking and/or recreational drug use under control, will be homeless in 5 years.

by JohnY on Jan 11, 2010 12:18 PM EST reply actions

Humphries stinks; can’t believe people are getting excited over this guy. Good Luck SWAT.

by 1sparks1 on Jan 11, 2010 12:20 PM EST reply actions

@ jarkid:
Extra points for the use of purified. My slight modification tho:

Lopez/Boone
Yikes/Humphries
TWill/Hayes
CDR/Lee
Harris/Dooling

by BrooklynJohnny on Jan 11, 2010 12:29 PM EST reply actions

@JohnY:
Be careful what you spew out of your thoughts, YOU may be homeless in 5 years. FYI, Sean will never b homeless….

by inspire..... on Jan 11, 2010 12:38 PM EST reply actions

BUT WHAT DOES THIS “STORY” HAVE TO DO WITH CDR?

by BergenTroll on Jan 11, 2010 12:43 PM EST reply actions

Getting ready for a playoff run!!!

Hollah!

by Shawn Carter on Jan 11, 2010 12:56 PM EST reply actions

Humphries is an upgrade for sure. But that’s about it. I haven’t seen this guy play much so I can’t make any judgement.

by Claud on Jan 11, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

at least now Shawn can go play the pick up game of East vs West in Baltimore

by Dennis on Jan 11, 2010 1:01 PM EST reply actions

Neither Najera nor Alston were going to get many minutes but because of their experience, mainly on playoff teams, they were wanted by other teams.

The Nets aren’t going to win many games so they are going after younger players with some potential, essentially auditioning them for the SEVEN or EIGHT roster spots that will be open next year.

Said it before, say it again: getting a decent young player, a back up point guard with a great work ethic, a pick and $640,000 in cash while adding a couple of million dollars to the team’s cap space in 2011 (and maybe next year) is not a bad week’s work.

by Net Income on Jan 11, 2010 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Somehow I think Humphries replaces Boone, who says he is better suited for the PF anyway. I hated the Najera signing from the get-go, so glad to see this happening.

by mt57 on Jan 11, 2010 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Nets are reportedly gonna let Shawne Williams stay a while, get a “free” look at him.

And why is everyone making a big deal about Humphries? He’ll grab a few rebounds here and there but not like he’s some double double guy.

by muwu on Jan 11, 2010 1:08 PM EST reply actions

@shawn carter what does hollah mean?

by frank c on Jan 11, 2010 1:12 PM EST reply actions

Yea I like the trades they have made here. Nothing earth shattering, but they are small steps in the right direction and they give the team a little more flexibility if a bigger opportunity comes along. I wouldn’t be surprised if Boone and Dooling are next; not because these are bad players, but because the team wants to maximize its cap space for next year. Boone likely will not be extended a qualifying offer and it is doubtful that the team picks up its option on Dooling.

by Chris2 on Jan 11, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Do we have a team option on Dooling? Isn’t it a partially guaranteed contract, not an option?

by muwu on Jan 11, 2010 1:18 PM EST reply actions

@gerald himself

I agree that Boone is a good little player in a smaller role, but he’s a big offensive detriment. Not only can he not shoot, but teams will foul him all day considering he can’t break 30 percent at the FT line.

by Sami on Jan 11, 2010 1:22 PM EST reply actions

@muwu
His contract is partially guarantted but only at 500k. We can buy him out for that amount but that half million goes against our available cap space.

by Chris2 on Jan 11, 2010 1:26 PM EST reply actions

Checking out some of the Mavericks forums, Humphries was liked by many.

Here is a comment from a Maverick fan who likes Najera;

 “Well I will miss Humphries. He reminds me of Najera back when he was young. I think the team is trying to save money for a future move. I look at the trade as Humphries for 5 million. Since Carlisle will not play young players other than Barea we have to do this deal”.

“Najera was a fan favorite here and if he has anything left, then add the savings, this will be a good trade for the Mavericks. New Jersey will like Humprhies and wont miss Najera”.
Viva Najera !!!!!!!

Put together a video of what Humphries can bring to the Nets.

by Sebastian Pruiti on Jan 11, 2010 1:55 PM EST reply actions

We are not going to trade Dooling. He is a piece that we need in next year.

by Tony on Jan 11, 2010 1:57 PM EST reply actions

Does anyone know what humphries go-to/ signature move is? Does he have a solid midrange game? Post-up game? Back-to-the basket? How’s his rebouding and defense?

by big daddy phil on Jan 11, 2010 2:07 PM EST reply actions

Humphries is a PF not a center. He has the potential to be a solid guy off the bench which is always good. Dooling and Hayes I’d love to resign/keep because they are very solid players to have off the bench.

by Claud on Jan 11, 2010 2:08 PM EST reply actions

To any1 who thinks Sean Williams will ever be anything more than a 12th man in this league..you are sadly mistaken. His offensive game hasn’t developed at all during his time with the Nets and he still makes more mistakes in 10 minutes than a Josh Boone type of player makes in 30 minutes. Good riddance Sean..hello Kris.

by Brett on Jan 11, 2010 2:16 PM EST reply actions

Humphries immediately becomes the best big man coming off the bench for the nets.

Not that any of this matters. I’ve said this before and i’ll say it again. If the nets are going to have any type of success this year it’s up to the players to get together and collectively come to the decision that they arent going to accept being a league wide laughing stock. Help is on the way, but not for this year.

by mattsimo on Jan 11, 2010 2:18 PM EST reply actions

If Humphries was that good, he wouldn’t have been traded for Najera.

This was a move the team/mgmt will benefit from in the front office, not the front court.

Why expect anything?

Some of you hate on Lopez and Harris yet are happy to have this square peg added to the round hole that is the NJ Nets.

by Trenton on Jan 11, 2010 2:36 PM EST reply actions

Humpries is an ok addition. It’s more additon by subtraction because Najera was so bad. But Kiki needs to pick 8 or 9 guys that are going to play every night and come up with some sort of rotation so these guys can build some cohesion. Right now they are a bunch of misfits that play as individuals. Thsy have so many faces that have come and gone all year that they have no identity and no trust in each other. Not to mention Kiki came into this mess in the middle of it and he’s not even a real coach..

by supreme on Jan 11, 2010 2:48 PM EST reply actions

I’m cautiously optimistic about Humphries. He is a tremendous athlete who hasn’t gotten much chance to play over his career. Disagreements with the coach. A broken leg. On teams with a lot of depth at his position. Maybe he would have been better served staying in college longer.

All we can say for sure is that, for perhaps the first time in his career, he will be on a team that is legitimately thin at his position. This is a chance for him to get a lot of minutes and hopefully prove himself.

by Dumpy on Jan 11, 2010 2:50 PM EST reply actions

@Sebastian Pruiti;

  Nice article, nice clips, nice job.

  In the interview, the description of Humphries strenghts and weaknesses, sounded very similiar to a number of our players. Kind of funny…

Wouldn’t it be a kick in the pants if Shawne Williams impresses the Nets coaching staff and ends up being a keeper. LMAO

by Mike on Jan 11, 2010 2:50 PM EST reply actions

Its great how Nets fans have honestly never seen this guy play but already are hating on him. My prediction is that in 2 weeks there will be Trade Humphries threads posted – regardless of what this guy does.

We are rebuilding. Dumping veterans for younger players and picks. Every team does this. Its called life in sports.

by Ryan243 on Jan 11, 2010 2:59 PM EST reply actions

@Ryan243;

 I think in two weeks time, fans will be complaining that Humphries should be starting over Yi. LOL

I like this move better then the Alston move, which I though was pretty good.

Nets management gets a B+.

by Mike on Jan 11, 2010 3:05 PM EST reply actions

Does anybody know the final details of this trade?

I’m assuming we didn’t have to give up a draft pick.

Anybody know???

by Mike on Jan 11, 2010 3:08 PM EST reply actions

@Trenton and Hab

OK, so you were able to name established players dance during warm-ups, but those are established players….heck…those are superstar players!!!

Sean Williams was a sophomore last year and was dancing…. as in literally dancing….none of the other nets players were dancing during the shoot-around warm-up.

I’m an STH, so I know what I saw!

by kuljo on Jan 11, 2010 3:45 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, did we give up a pick? I hope not

Great move by Rod. Moving Skip for Quinn and Najera for Humphries and cutting Sean were good addition by subtraction move. We get a PG that can hit the three, and someone that is going to hustle in the front court. Move Lee to the bench, start CDR rightfully at the two, and start Jarvis Hayes at the SF.

More work needs to be done.
