The First Trade of the Prokhorov Era?

The Star-Ledger reports the final piece in the Nets/Mavs trade is Mikhail Prokhorov's approval, expected to be a "formality". Prokhorov hasn't been approved by the NBA's Board of Governors, but as part of the Barclays Center closing, he agreed to take on up to $60 million in Nets' losses the next two years. The trade, in particular the Nets' agreement to take on Shawne Williams' contract, will add to the payroll.

The trade prob isnt happening…we are taking an additional $2million. would prok want that?
by Andy on Jan 10, 2010 9:26 AM EST reply actions
$2million to a multi-billionaire is like $20 to you and me. If prok is going to veto a trade over that, why buy a team in the first place?

Conversation:
Rod: Hey Mikhail, we need your approval on a trade.

Mikhail: Yatvoy rot ebal (curse in russian), u waste 2 minutes of my life over 2 million dollars.

The trade saves Dallas about 2million this year in salaries and taxes. For the Nets, this trade rids them of Najera’s contract. The net change in salaries is about 0 considering the remaining amount Najera is owed, what they’re paying Humphries for this year and next and the remainder of Shawne Williams’ contract. So no Andy, I don’t think there is an additional 2 million. This trade just rearranges the financial burdens for both teams. Dallas is stretching what they owe into three years while Nets are putting more of a front load on their books.

lmao….everyone has been talking as if this Pokhorov guy will spend money like running water. I just hope he comes through for us.

@NI
I think you forgot to mention the additional savings of $2.75 million for Najera’s 2011-2012, which I’m not sure if its fully guaranteed.
The obvious question though is how can Prokhorov be signing off on player deals if he hasn’t yet been approved by the NBA?
I don’t want to see this deal nixed later on, on technicalities.
Earlier, we were told that the Nets couldn’t make any deals that involved taking on new salary, until Proky was approved?
If this deal can go through, then apparently, we really don’t need to see Proky approved before Feb. 19, though it would be wise for everyone to get over this last step.

In a separate deal, how about trading Battie (and a partially protected 2nd rd pick) for the Knicks Darko (expiring $7.5 million).
Nets benefit because Darko would get PT for rest of season, and he would help at Center position more than Battie.
Darko benefits because he could increase his value before going back to Europe next year or else maybe Nets (or other team) could want him back for around $2-3 million.
Darko isn’t playing for Knicks anyway, and they could at least get a needed draft pick of sorts, while saving about $1 million (thanks to Proky).

@jerry25
We are told it is fully guaranteed.
I have to think one of two things re Prokhorov: either someone screwed up in telling Dave D he has to approve the deal or the league has given the Nets a waiver on financial decisions. The NBA has approved the arrangement under which Prokhorov will eat the Nets losses.
@essrog
To be precise, $2.416 million for someone with a net worth of $20 billion is like two dollars and 41 cents for someone with a net worth of $200,000.
In other words, pocket change. :-)

I’ve said this before: With the emergence of Tyreke Evans, Kevin Martin will be expendable in Sacramento. That’s why I would offer: Dooling, T-Will and Dallas 1st rounder for him. Yes he makes 40 million over 4 years but thats an affordable contract and he may be the best option at SG compared to the SG’s in the FA pool (e.g: Joe Johnson).
For this season, it gives us Lopez, Yi, CDR, Martin and Harris. If we get Wall, we can then deal Harris in the offseason and get something great in return AND we need to sign Boozer, Amare or David Lee.
This is very realistic and not hoping for a Lebron to come here.
Next Year we have:
Lopez
Lee,Amare or Boozer
CDR
Martin
Hopefully Wall, but if not we still have Harris.
If we get this Martin deal done, it will allow us to draft the best player available because we will have our starting lineup set.

What exactly do Nets hope to gain by trading Boone ($1.1 million remaining on contract this year), whose contract expires anyway at end of year?
Are Nets looking for a true backup center like Darko? Do they want someone with an expiring contract, only to let them go on July 1?
Best option would be to get a backup Center on a Rookie contract, but that would eat into salary cap space for next year. Only way to Upgrade is to throw in a decent draft pick from the 9 possible available (1st pick for 2010 is off limits).
I’m O’kay with this, since I really don’t think the Nets will make use of their some $24 million in cap space anyway.
LeBron is staying in Cleveland for an extra year with 90% probability, and Bosh, we are learning has an offer from Lakers that Toronto can’t refuse!

Just look at ESPN today: 3 PF’s on the block – bosh, west, Jefferson. We have everything everyone wants: young players, draft picks, salary cap space, etc. Wouldn’t any of them be a vast improvement here?
by Yao on Jan 10, 2010 12:32 PM EST reply actions
Actually NI & Essrog, it is like $24 for someone worth $200,000, not $2.4.
I convert everything to scientific notation, so no need for calculators that can’t handle 20 billion anyway.
$24 to a frugal person worth $200,000 is like lets go out to dinner with wife on Friday night.
However, another way to look at it, is that it is probably less that his increase in net worth for one day, just by letting his assets/interest grow. He can say, I will make it up tomorrow, by doing nothing.
by jerry25 on Jan 10, 2010 12:39 PM EST reply actions
@Yao:
Bosh is out. If I was Toronto, I would take Bynum over Yi (LOL). Besides, the players have to re-sign with Nets, and I CAN see Bosh re-signing with Lakers.
I have been saying recently, that 2010 FA is over-hyped.
Big deals will happen before trade deadline or in the case of LeBron, in 2011.
We are therefore making too much talk about cap space for 2010. More reason why tweaking salary cap by getting rid of Dooling would be a mistake (unless Nets got 1st pick for Wall).
by jerry25 on Jan 10, 2010 12:43 PM EST reply actions
@Yao
If you read the trashy ESPN piece by Marc Stein, it says that Jefferson and West AREN’t available after all (at least not until after the season).
Also, the Bosh info. is out of date as Lakers are making a better (unofficial) offer for Bosh, than Houston – that is Bynum. It is being reported elsewhere (HoopsWorld) and won’t happen for another month.
In anycase, if Yi(kes) is playing more than 25 mpg next year then Nets royally screwed up.
