Harris vs. Rose -- A New Rivalry

Derrick Rose and Devin Harris may very well spend a lot of time circling each other this season. Not only do they play each other three times, but they're almost certainly competing for one of the final spots on Team USA. RotoTimes has two of its writers debate who's better from a fantasy viewpoint. Neither mentions what happened on Feb. 25 of this year, when Harris went for 42 and 6 vs. his new rival.

HHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

how can anyone compare rose to an allstar like Devin Harris??

by njd on Sep 5, 2009 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

That article was redundant. Anyone who owned Rose last year knows that his numbers are not fantasy-friendly.

by j-kidd on Sep 5, 2009 7:51 PM EDT reply actions

Devo has finals experience. And didn’t cheat on his SATs / actually took them.

by Alex F on Sep 5, 2009 8:45 PM EDT reply actions

Can I just say Rose is younger, was a rookie, better passer, better vision, better BBIQ, oh and better defense…Rose WILL be better this season, and I would choose him over Harris any day to lead my team, at least the Bulls made it the playoffs xO

@ natedd

why don’t you give your great advice to rod thorn and see what he thinks?

i hope that your just joking around.

by njd on Sep 5, 2009 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

Why do I have to be joking? Rose has the tools to be great in the league, he and Rondo were the best players in the opening rounds of the playoffs. Rose just fits the traditional PG mold that I love and am used to, which was why I became a fan of the Nets when Kidd was dishin it out. Nowadays the PG position is becoming undervalued and more like a person who brings the ball up the court and shoots or hands it off, and hey, I’m not bashing Harris’ style, but saying I prefer Rose’s style as well as his potential to be really good.

And in comparing these guys, am I that far off when I say Rose is better in those aspects from how these guys played last season? Harris is good, and makes some unbelievable plays at times, but I feel that if he made a conscious effort to get the team more involved instead of making it harder for himself, we could have done better last season.

You can like Harris all you want, but don’t fool yourselves about Rose, he’s going to be very good-star in this league for a while. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aurRk8MHWLk

Only 23 more days till training camp opens. When does Sean answer for the computer flinging in Denver last season? The press is busy inventing stuff to write about. Life is good. What will the new NBA season bring? Hopefully, a competitive team that is fun to watch. AND the big question remains: What foreign language will STARBURY need to learn, in order to talk to his team mates this coming season, or is he DONE? What a waste of natural talent he was. Two people I certainly hate, StarBury and Isiah Thomas. They drove me to become a NETS fan. Need to sleep now….

by Paul Erstein on Sep 5, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

To be frank about Starbury, I think he’s a genius, he made close to 20mil from the Knicks and didn’t even have to lift a finger, and then ended up with the defending champs. And to defend his decision, who honestly would play for the Knicks if they wanted a championship—-excluding Stephen Jackson of course :D

I just hope you thought a little bit about what you are posting before posting it. (then again, you probably thought long about it…maybe that is just the best you’ve got)

@natedd

at this moment in time, devin harris is the better player.

by njd on Sep 5, 2009 11:50 PM EDT reply actions

Ok KJV…
Everyone has their own opinion, and I’ll acknowledge that I overrated Rose, but I still believe he’ll be a big-time player in the near future. Yes, Harris is better at the moment, but Rose has the potential to be better. I respect everyone’s opinion and I’ll defend my stance in an argument until proven otherwise, although this thread isn’t the best example of that. The only thing I ask is that others don’t talk down to me outside the context of the argument. I’m sorry I’m so brash in my statements, I’ll be sure to provide scholarly ones next time…

by NateDD on Sep 6, 2009 1:20 AM EDT reply actions

Why would anyone say that Rose is a better defender than Harris? That is simply so wrong it is hilarious, especially considering what Harris did to Rose back in February…DESTROYED him.

Of course, some Nets fans will always find fault with their own. It’s part of being a Nets fan. All-star, Schmall-star. Who cares?

Rose is not the leader Harris is, but who cares. Believe the hype, NateDD.

by Net Income on Sep 6, 2009 3:40 AM EDT reply actions

right now harris is better, but in few years rose will surpass him, and rose overally will be better, harris didint have such a good rookie year

by netsfan on Sep 6, 2009 9:15 AM EDT reply actions

I think Rose will be the better player but not by much. However, Harris is in the better position to win cuz he plays with the better big man and has the better front office man in Thorn. It all should pan out shortly for the Nets and when it does Harris and Lopez will emerge as the leaders on the court.

by libigman on Sep 6, 2009 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t claim to be objective or scholarly, but I don’t like Rose for 2 reasons, 1) he displaced CDR as the supposed best player on the best team in college BB, and 2) he cheated on his SATs to get to that position. The first one worked out good for the Nets and placed a big chip on Chris’ shoulder, so that will work out OK, but the second one just makes it impossible to respect the man.

by JD down the shore on Sep 6, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions

Rose seems to be a better passer than harris. He has more of a tendency to find his teammates than harris does. His overall game is more balanced.I think Harris is great but I think he unnecesesarily tries to take over the game to much sometimes. Those pull up 3s that he wud take when the nets lost leads or were down in crunch time were very annoying.

Harris has got some really good players around him this year. He has to trust them to contribute rather than believe that he is and has to be the “Answer” to this team. If he is overly inclined towards increasing his scoring this year n less concerned about defense, getting others involved, and team chemistry the nets will not be good.

He’s really gotta be less selfish this year. I think Harris has it in him to really get his teammates involved and put team first. He’s not AI Lite. He definitely speaks more as a team player than AI does but now his actions have to back up his words.

He can’t say defense is the answer and not play defense. He should know that its alrite to score less n trust his teammates to contribute. No more Carter to babysit, take the load off the Nets and win games in crunch time. Harris and the rest of the nets have to realize winning is a team effort on both ends. Harris n Hayes gotta be team leaders and emphasize the importance of chemistry and team effort.

by NJQuestCat on Sep 6, 2009 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

Unselfish play could really benefit this team.

by NJQuestCat on Sep 6, 2009 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

Devin Harris is an All Star and now the Best Player on the NJ Nets. D Rose will be an All Star and is on a terrific Bulls Team. Both players are terrific and is D Rose was on the Nets there would not be one negative comment about him.
At least the Nets marketing department will not give out D Rose Jersey’s this year. And how about the sale on the Carter Jersey’s? Perhaps the Nets internet store should sell the Orlando Magic Carter Jersey. It would boost sales

by GSHOCK on Sep 6, 2009 12:16 PM EDT reply actions

Derrick Rose will be a premier PG for years to come. This kid is special.

by AndrĂ©s on Sep 6, 2009 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t really think that Rose’s defense is anything to write home about. If Devin Harris actually attempts to play defense this season, and I won’t hold my breath, then he’ll easily be the better overall player.

I think as far as the ability to play point guard goes, Rose is a better passer.

As far as Harris’ ability to lead goes, the jury is out. He has to prove that he can lead a team because the guy I saw last year seemed more concerned about winning personal accolades than winning games and making teammates better. Lets hope he has a different approach this season because just because you average 20+ doesn’t mean you’ll make the all star game…losers aren’t respected.

Did anyone read that I said “And in comparing these guys, am I that far off when I say Rose is better in those aspects from how these guys played last season?”

Yeah I know Harris WAS one of the best lock-down defenders in the league, but I frankly saw none of that for the majority of last season, or am I being overly cynical of the man?

by NateDD on Sep 6, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

@NateDD

Because you sound a little desperate for some feedback…

Rose is a freakish athelete who has always been a point guard and who may well become a GREAT player. However, I dont think he is a very well rounded person. I would not trade Rose, but I also think the Bulls will need to find team leaders to put around him (why they keep Hinrich and let Gordon go?).

Devin is a very good athelete but not the freak that Rose is (Rose is as fast and quick, but also naturally stronger). Devin was a shooting guard who has been learning the point position part time in Dallas. He IS a better defender (an elite quality defender)….and here is the part I dont get with alot of the postings on this site…Devin was never going to be able to evolve from a part time player, fifth offensive option, lock down defender on a championship caliber team to an elite scorer, elite point guard, team leader AND lock down defender on a rebuilding team in one season – expecting him to do everything in one leap is expecting him to be CP3. Also he filled a role in the dribble, drive, drive, dribble, whatever offense that meant he was asked to handle the ball ALOT, initiate most/all of the offense AND provide much of the offense. Point is he did everything you could have asked and more in his first full year in NJ. Let him settle in and watch the D reemerge.

last comment Rose versus Harris is that Harris is an exceptional human. Follow what he does for charity (real not phony for the PR benefits), look at how he handles himself publically, look at how he is still working to finish his degree, look at how hard he is working at becoming better at his game – including stating what he needs to improve. This is the type of person you want leading your team.

Basketball remains a team game. One on one you can reasonably argue Rose and I understand why the Bulls will never trade him. Developing a team from the ground up and I take Devin every day. And of course there is always that February beat down…..

by Jay on Sep 6, 2009 6:16 PM EDT reply actions

Yes Jay, Harris did all that we asked of him, and he relished and exceeded in his role, however narrow and simplistic it might seem. But the main reason I jumped into this thread in the first place was because people were overlooking the fact that Rose IS a rookie, and has the potential to be a star. Of course he’s going to need veterans, all budding young players do, would Harris have developed the way he did in Dallas and NJ had not the leadership of Dirk, Avery, RJ, and VC been there? And I don’t want to make a case for either one’s philanthropy/charity/peace and love work because, in all honesty I feel it has no correlation to a player’s ability—-I’ll like that person for what they’re doing, but don’t people overlook those deeds and cite that player’s weaknesses and flaws, like how many did so to VC? And how many rookies have you seen that have committed themselves to their communities with their own foundations? I rest my case that Harris IS the better player, more experience as a 6 year veteran and therefore more composed in being the leader of the team—supposedly.

devin harris can consistently score on any defense placed in his path.

by NateDD on Sep 7, 2009 6:27 AM EDT reply actions

Devin demolished Rose last year, as a vet will do to a rookie. But after watching Rose in the playoffs, I think he is going to catch up fast. Should be an interesting matchup this year.
