Camp Starts With Nothing But Defense

It was all defense all the time as the Nets opened training camp on Tuesday. "We’re not as talented as other teams," says Devin Harris, "so we have to make up for it with hard work." Keyon Dooling (hip), Tony Battie (arthritis in his knee) and Eduardo Najera (back) are all in the infirmary, and Rafer Alston denies that he wants out.

Nice, because I want to keep Rafer. He’s a better PG and better at his position than Dooling

It didn’t make much sense for a number of reasons:
—the author of the report is not someone who is familar with the Nets. That doesn’t mean he didnt hear it from someone, but a beat writer would have checked it out (and the source would have known that).
—No writer confirmed it and Dalessandro wrote that no one in the Nets organization knew anything about it.
—The usual suspect in cases like this is the players’s agent, and usually, it’s an inexperienced agent who plays that game. Alston’s agent is Dan Fegan who has good relations with the Nets front office and reps four Nets: Alston, Yi, Najera and Hayes. You wouldn’t do that with that’s at stake for you and your clients…and you wouldnt do it with a guy who no one knows. It could get missed. You’d do it with an established writer or columnist.
—Alston said repeatedly on arrival that he was happy to be in New Jersey near home for the first time in his career.

Ok I’m confused by this.
“So there’s so much to keep an eye on. Will the sale actually go through? Remember, it’s contingent upon acquiring funding for the new Brooklyn arena by Dec. 31.”
Is this referring to the bonds that need to be cashed in to finance the project? If they can’t get this financing, then Proky cannot buy the team? I thought Proky was coming to the rescue and making the tax-exempt bonds thing less of an issue.

So did i. And he is. The bonds is about 650 million. He’s putting in 700 million… you would think that they dont need the bonds anymore.

My understanding is that the entire sale is contingent on getting the arena financing completed by the end of the year because that is the expiration of the ability to make bond interest tax-free. If the financing isn’t completed by the deadline, perhaps a new deal would then be reached, but it would be at a lower price because the cost of financing the Barclay’s Center would go up significantly.

The perimeter D could be better if TWill plays the 3 but its all about the interior D that will make the difference. If Opie is still trying to teach D and then puts a SG (VC) on Odom (PF) with the game on the line it’s useless. If his style with small ball continues, he could try to teach D till the cows come home, it won’t work. If he wants D put Swat at the PF and Yi at the SF and you have D. Imo that’s all we have and anything else will be a disaster. It’s good that the coach knows what’s wrong, I just hope he learns how to fix it.

If Alston is telling the truth, which I think he is, then my initial suspicion could be right … the leak might have came from the team who wants him.

Skip is a goner. As soon as KD proves he’s 100% healthy again, Rafer should be shipped out.

Devin Harris should absolute go now while his value is high. Rafer and Dooling are both huge defensive and outside shooting upgrades. Right now, he is a 26 year old all-star point guard, that other teams consider a building block. Next offseason he will be considered a soon-to be 28 year old underskilled, poor shooting, no-defense unnatural point who could never stay healthy for a full season. Its about foresight – sell high.

@JT
Nets owners were privately confident they could get the financing before the Prokhorov deal. Now, they have partnered with one of the richest men in the world.
I expect we will see a financing package BEFORE the court hearing.
I think there are other issues out there beyond the financing, like how will the other investors be treated.

Keyon Dooling can play the 2 once Rafer is on the court at the same time.
