Nets Thinking Horizontal, Not Vertical

No, that doesn't mean they're going small ball. It means, says Lawrence Frank, that the Nets roster has been leveled out...no more of that "Big Three bull". Instead, it's all about "opportunity". Meanwhile, Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe said they are "not in the loop" on ownership talks, but do plan on being a player in next year's free agency, as long as the team is attractive. Thorn also said he anticipates "minor" roster moves.

LFrank is singing the right song for this squad: If DHarris buys in and does not act like a prima donna then we can do things. But, so much depends on Brook and Lee and Twill becoming what we think they can be on the DEFENSIVE end of the floor. I only saw the word Yi once and it was after the main four guys. I think LFrank is a realist and knows you cannot change a leopard’s spots. Yi is what he is- a role player who struggles defensively and looks lost offensively. Our hope is in Twill and Lee and Brook and CDR. Sounds like they are targetting Bosh or Boozer.

I’m a little surprised that CDR wasn’t mentioned in any of the articles. I think he will be a big part of the Nets success.

For some reason I think the Nets might trade Devin down the road. A dream would be for CP3. As good as DH is not sure if he has the leadership skills to make everyone on the team better.
There is a small chance the Hornets will go into remake mode and we could compete in that sweepstakes.
I relize this is out of the blue but just a thought for the future.

The play of Lopez is the only difference imo that will correct the D and rebounding problem of last year. The coach has to stay away from small ball and come up with something if Yi doesn’t pan out otherwise, I think Thorn is in for a rude awakening.

The big 3 , Thorn, Kiki + Frank remind me of the band playing on the Titantic. Wish for the best and expect the worst. These guys don’t know if they will even have a job next year. Frank will probably have a nervous breakdown by December. As for this horizontal, vertical, buying into the program mumbo jumbo, please give us a break. Speak to us, not around us. That is Franks biggest problem. He talks as if he is an insecure High School teacher, reading from the course notes. I would hate to be one of his players and have to hear his nonsense day in and day out. No wonder Kidd, Carter and Jefferson tuned him out.

@ Mike
Not only did the big 3 tune him out but also ruined his credibility with the remaining players. Thats why he talks about buying in. Like you said, he’s insecure. He is counting on Yi to be aggressive defensively. Surrrre. Thorn talks about Yi’s moves around the basket as his improvement. No talk about his D?

I agree that LFrank has no precense whatsoever. In that press conference last year after he benched Harris, he was stuttering and stammering constantly. He does not seem like a great leader of men.

You can’t have a kid leading kids. Frank seems to be a great guy on many levels but as a leader he is just a kid. The Nets could use a man. Are there any Chuck Daly types out there?

For what may be a dismal season about to begin, there sure is a higher level of anticipation than I would expect. There seems to be a lot at stake for the players, coaches, and management. Even some of us fans have staked out wildly different territory as far as predictions and prognostications goes. And then an 800-lb Russian bear strolls onto the scene. What is going on? What a time to be a Nets fan!

Frank bashing and not a single game is played. Wow. Give the man a break, guys. Lopez, Harris, Dooling, Hayes all got way better under Frank. And if Twill and Lee and even Yi improve, then what – luck? The coach is the least of our problems.

@libigman
How do you know they tuned him out? Are you an insider, perhaps an assistant coach posting under an alias (We have had several key personnel posting here, so I guess that’s possible)?

A week to camp, yeah! AND the Russian doesn’t sign anything until after the Brooklyn hearing in three weeks. He’d be an idiot to fork over a dollar until after the court rules, again. If the Russian comes, will they be serving Herring and borscht in the Barclays center? How about Sean, Boone and Simmons for Nenad? Comrade Nenad?

Agree with Danny. CDR wasn’t mentioned at all. I think he is going to play an important role in this teams development.

Kidd tuned the franchise out, not the coach.
Jefferson was mad he was traded. He wanted to stay on a team that was coached by Frank.
Carter was always in Frank’s corner.

Kidd, Carter and Jefferson ran the team, not Opie. Can you really imagine Frank telling Kidd or Carter what to do or not do? Gimme a break. Frank looks like he’s on the verge of tears most times. How did he get the job in the first place. Affirmatve action turned on its head.

@Yormark
Of course RJ wanted to stay with Frank, Where else could a player do and say anything he wants? That’s like me working for a spineless CEO. Of course if I can do anything I want, whenever I want, I wouldnt want to go someplace else and have someone be on my case constantly. That doesnt mean I think the spineless guy is good at his job.

@TheMann; You talk the words right out of my mouth. It’s like the inmates running the asylum.

The most interesting Frank quote talking about defense is:
“If you’re going to set the tone as the best player, you have to embody what the team is going to be about.”
The funny thing is there is only one Nets Star player that never fit into this mold. Granted VC was a talented offensive player, but the funny thing is once VC came our perimeter D tanked.
This team is going to be better defensively. Harris, Lee, Twill, SOMEONE at PF, and Lopez should be much better defensively.
After that, All the other quotes are just more Frank gibberish.
by SIC on Sep 23, 2009 1:00 PM EDT reply actions
I agree with the Mann. Who wouldnt want to be coached by someone that has no control. Kidd got him the job by getting rid of Scott. Kidd knew what he was doing. IMO opinion this was also his down fall. Please VC wasnt held accountable for his bad D. So why would Kidd and RJ focus on D? VC got a huge contract hardly playing D. Kidd wanted one too.

The inmates who make more money than 99 percent of the coaches in the league, have been running the asylum in the last decade plus.
You have to go back more years than that to find the situations where the NBA coach is a boss figure, like he can still be in college or high school, etc. Right now, only a couple of coaches can command that kind of money (which in this wonderful world equals respect).
If you want that coach=boss dynamic, and you don’t have Phil Jackson, then you have to have players that repect an otherwise good coach, like Popovich. Some players do, some (punks) don’t. Most of today’s players wouldn’t show Red Auerbach respect as a boss.
Frank knows this, and he has kissed the fannies of the big time players he’s had, which is partially why he has lasted. We’ll see what Harris does with him.
