Rev Up the Moving Vans...but Not for the Nets

Things may be unsettled for the Nets...with lawsuits, losses as high as $30 million and an owner looking to sell all or part of the team. But Alex Raskin writes in HoopsWorld that the Nets aren't likely to move...at least beyond Brooklyn. He looks at all the teams who might load up the moving vans. The Clippers and Kings, he writes, the most likely to head out. Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, the battle continues.

CA’s economy would probably be WORSE if they lost either team. Don’t know how that would all play out.

LETS GET A TEAM IN VEGAS!!!!

I always play the Nets on roulette (5, 6, 12, 15, 24, 30, 35) so that should be reason enough.

The Daily News editorial is reasonable. The law suits are frivolous. There is not desperation as Oder suggests, but there is precedent after precedent for this. The project will add housing to a blighted area. Yes, blighted. The project will add jobs and an arena. Duh, this is a three fold benefit – 4 fold: houses, arena, jobs, end of blighted/underdeveloped area. Step aside Delay Don’t Develop Brooklyn.

Why would the clippers leave. The only reason donald sterling makes any money with that team is because its in LA.

Thanks MDB!

And I agree, there’s absolutely no reason for Sterling to move. He’s never shown the inclination to do anything other than sit back and collect his profits from being second banana in LA. That Hoopsworld article isn’t very insightful.

by Bruce on Aug 8, 2009 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

That article is just pure speculation. The Kings & Nets are the only teams in danger of relocation. For the Nets I don’t see them moving beyond Brooklyn or Newark and for the Kings I don’t see them moving beyond Anaheim or San Jose.

Kansas City & Vancouver are dark-horses for KC it’s the State of the Art Arena they have and for Vancouver it’s the Canucks Owner who’s actually interested in bringing the NBA back to Vancouver. I don’t think KC would be a good choice but Vancouver would be an excellent choice especially with a winning team. Canadians love sports and have great passion for sports, just look at the Toronto Raptors and Toronto FC. Crazy passionate fan-bases for other sports than NHL and CFL.

@Bruce and Kevin

Agree to a certain extent but he’s the 3rd banana and it’s just tacky to play in the arena that houses another and much more popular NBA tenant. Playing games with multiple Laker championship banners and retired numbers is just pathetic IMO. That would be like the Nets moving to MSG. No matter how anti Brooklyn or anti Newark somebody is, they would have to admit that being in either one of those places beats the heck out of playing at MSG.

Also, while he only pays 1.5 million in rent, Sterling gets almost none of the luxury suite and other amenity revenue that comes from Staples. They are just a pawn to boost AEG’s ego.

Also, a big chunk of his profits come from being in the LA market, not necessarily Staples itself. The Honda Center is part of the LA market even it it’s in Orange County so he would still be on the same radio, cable and tv stations and make just as much off corporate and broadcast revenue.

Lastly, if he doesn’t move to the Honda Center, the Kings just might and Sterling would not only be the 3rd banana in his own crib but the 3rd banana of NBA teams in LA. When it’s time to re-negotiate his broadcast deals, he won’t get a thing as they will jump to the Kings and leave his sorry ass with nothing.

That being said, I’m glad they cleared up the Charlotte and Memphis situations. The Kings are in trouble and they are the most likely to leave. Las Vegas isn’t building their arena and may never build it due to the economy while St. Louis won’t get a team if Bill Laurie isn’t the owner. It’s a small market with 3 teams so nothing is happening there.

San Jose, Anaheim and Kansas City are the front runners. The Maloofs aren’t going to KC so it’s going to come down to SJ and Anaheim.

by Trueblood on Aug 8, 2009 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

@kombayn

Yep, it’s coming down to San Jose and Anaheim for the Kings. Like we’ve been talking about in regards to the possibility of the Nets in Newark, it all comes down to coming up with a fair lease for the Kings since they will be playing in an NHL arena. Best case scenario would see the Maloofs buy the Sharks as well so they could control the arena.

Vancouver was a great city for the NBA. Their fans were rabid. I always say that they were the original Oklahoma City and that the only reason we never heard about them was because the Grizz lost so much whereas the Hornets almost made the playoffs twice in OKC so that put them more in the national eye. I just don’t see them getting a new team. The Pacers are merely leveraging for a new lease from the city of Indianapolis and using Vancouver as leverage.

Yes bleed Ratner bleed. The true sign of a real fan is hoping for the teams owner to lose all of his money..because look what its done so far! I just hope we’re able to dump all of our talent!! Yay!

He’s just gonna sell to someone else he will move us to brooklyn. I swear that some of the worst fans in all of sports post on this site.

…Let the trashing of me…begin!

by Harold on Aug 8, 2009 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

Harold,

The “real” fans on this site are rooting for Ratner to fail because of what he’s done to this team since he assumed ownership. He’s looking to sell, anyway. Personally, I don’t have any sympathy for the man, whatsoever. As long as he sells to someone who has the team’s best interests at heart. I happen to think that Brooklyn is not the place for the Nets, but that’s just me.

by MrT on Aug 9, 2009 3:12 AM EDT reply actions

@ Mr. T

They’re rooting for Ratner to fail and have been for years because they want the Nets in Newark. At this point even as a strong Brooklyn supporter, Newark looks great right now in comparison to our current situation because I just want what’s best for my team but whether any of us like it or not Newark is not gonna happen.

I don’t care about Ratner, I really don’t. I just wanna get out of this dump we’re currently in. Sell us to the Russian and ship us to Brooklyn!

by Harold on Aug 9, 2009 9:30 AM EDT reply actions

Harold,

How do you know Newark won’t happen? Do you have any proof? Just because Ratner says he will only sell to Brooklyn interests doesn’t mean that will play out. What if he gets a much better offer from NJ interests? Ratner has promised quite a bit in his six years as owner, yet little has happened. Yes, fans want the team in Newark, but they also don’t like the financial bloodletting that has happened over the last few years, and the lack of a real effort to make the team competitive again. That’s why I don’t support him as a team owner. In addition, I have always had doubts about Brooklyn, especially in a weak economy and with the focus on cost-cutting and reductions in gov’t spending and more efficiency. If this project goes through, a number of public officials in NY will lose their seats next time around. This project won’t stimulate the economy if the profits go exclusively to a private developer, while taxpayers in NY get to foot the bill.

At any rate, we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

@Mr T – “Yes, fans want the team in Newark, but they also don’t like the financial bloodletting that has happened over the last few years, and the lack of a real effort to make the team competitive again. That’s why I don’t support him as a team owner.”
Uh what fans, Mr. T? you and me? (I dont count since i’d prefer brooklyn) The decision is going to be made on basis of finances and also probability of ego satisfaction for owners. Owners like to win. They like to own a famous, successful team. Sorry, the above facts don’t make me angry. That’s how it is for every team: business and ego.
You have to admit, the team will make way more money on brooklyn, be more famous, have better chance to contend.
The most likely thing would be that Brooklyn Nets becomes a major world famous brand. Much more than L A Clippers.
Brooklyn is bigger and richer than Newark. I like Newark, but Newark, you’re no Brooklyn.

by Ronnie the Fan on Aug 10, 2009 9:33 AM EDT reply actions

I doubt that the Kings or the Clippers are going to move either, because I have heard almost nothing about that. Why haven’t they already moved years ago? The answer is because they still have fans. BTW, except for the Monarchs, a WNBA team, Sacramento is no other major professional sports team besides the Kings, so losing them would be a major loss to that city. As for the Nets, if nothing happens for the move in five months, the move will not likely happen. Once again, the lawsuits have been proven to be a lose-lose for Ratner, because even if he wins, he still doesn’t seem to have the money to invest in this project especially when the banks won’t give him the loans. If Brooklyn fails, then Newark is the only realistic option besides staying at the Meadowlands. If they do end up stayin at the Izod Center than at least allow for them to get the trains.

the daily news editorial, like the self-styled attorneys in the comments here, is clueless. i’d advise the guy above, so certain is he, to read the briefs, rather than Mort Zuckerman’s feelings.

by brokeland on Aug 10, 2009 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

@Tal

You are right in that the Clippers won’t move even though it makes all the sense in the world. Sterling is an idiot who could care less that he’s the 4th banana in his own building when he could be #1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

As for the Kings, they could very well relocate. They are the only show in town but in California, it’s next to impossible to build an arena with public tax funds. It simply won’t happen. It didn’t happen in the earlier part of the decade when it costed half of what it does now and the economy was booming and it sure won’t happen now with arenas going for nearly $600 million and a recession.

What they are trying to do now is build something similar to Atlantic Yards on the site of Cal Expo near downtown Sacramento. They chose that site because like AY, they can issue bonds.

Also, like AY, they are planning to build tons of residential and business towers so that the project can be profitable.

The problem is that unlike AY with Ratner, this Cal Expo thing still doesn’t have a developer willing to take on the project and they are running out of time. If something doesn’t happen before March of 2010, the Maloofs will most likely file for relocation. Arco Arena is just too outdated and they can’t wait any longer.

Things like this must have Stern pulling his hair out. He has a developer for the Nets but the guy is trying to bulldoze where people already live and predictably and justifiably, they are meeting resistance.

Meanwhile, you don’t have to worry about any of that in Sacramento but you don’t have an investor/developer and with the economy being what it is, they probably never will.

so how much will plane tickets be to see the nets in st. louis or another city ?

becuz i can guarantee one thing…. The Nets will not be in New Jersey…..

all you ppl who hope brooklyn will fail so they magically end up at the rock….. lolz u’re all cute

by blazin pp face on Aug 11, 2009 12:21 AM EDT reply actions

It’s not prooven that if the Nets don’t end up in Brooklyn, they can’t be a NJ team at all. Lately, Newark has been the only other alternative besides staying at the Meadowlands if the move does not occur. That whole move to Seattle or KC are nothing but rumors that will never happen. Until I see proof that they will end up in those other cities if not Brooklyn, I will not believe that. It’s very likely that Vanderbeek, Corzine, and Booker are just waiting for the move to Brooklyn to fail and buying to have the Nets over in the Prudential Center.
