ESPN: Nets Will Have the Most Cap Space in 2010

Room for two? ESPN's Chad Ford has crunched cap space numbers for the 2010 Free Agent Race and it's really not that close. Nets are #1. "New Jersey", writes Ford, "has one of the best opportunities to land a big-time free agent. The Nets are likely to be somewhere between $25 million and $27 million under the cap". The Knicks and Heat will have space too, but have to fill more roster spots.

Well the Nets better be decent this year, cause if they win 20 or less I don’t think many people are going to want to hop on the turnpike to play here.
So keep that in mind as you talk about “its all good, we’ll be ok, sure we’ll lose a lot but then we can get a high draft pick and sign Lebron and Wade!!!”
Cap space don’t win games

with either wade lebron stat or bosh we can make a great push in the playoffs. or get 2 lol i do doubt it.
by tu vieja on Aug 7, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions
you also have to keep in mind that the off season is after the draft so if we are able to get a top 5 pick like people predict then get a free agent that fills an empty slot not someone that will make a rookie that deserves to start come off the bench.

That’s about all we got…..most cap space.
Space is emptiness until it’s filled.

nets are WAY better off sucking this year and getting a stud in next year’s draft. if harris, lopez, yi, lee, CDR, twill show promise the nets will be very enticing to free agents (especially if brooklyn is happening).
by dex on Aug 7, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions
I kind of want Brooklyn to happen because if it doesn’t I don’t see any big time free agents will be coming here.
by Nets in 2010 on Aug 7, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions
I don’t think the core issue is if we win 20 or 40 games to attract a free agent. Let’s face it, LBJ will sell out any arena including the Meadowlands nightly. He will turn it into an electric environment. Brooklyn is vital for attracting a free agent aside from James I believe.
But more than anything these players want to win a title. Assuming of course the max money is laid on the table. Then it comes down to "Can I join DH, and BLo and these guys and make it happen. There are very few teams with as promising a nucleus of the Nets, and none that have the cap space. We will be goilden in a year with or without LBJ. Remember we can still trade for anyone cause we are under the cap, if we get spurned by free agents. We have two picks in a deep draft, and a wealth of young talent.

I am pretty sure that this team is going to get a top 5 pick, considering we’re not in position to have a great year. Considering how deep next year’s draft is, and having a top 5 pick and the Mavs pick, I think we could draft 1 “star” player and 1 quality bench player in next year’s draft. IF the likes of LeBron, D-Wade, and Bosh even become free agents, acquiring them will be a very hard task to accomplish considering the amount of teams that will court them. I would definately make an effort to acquire them, but that may be difficult. The depth of next year’s free agent class, as well as our cap space, may enable us to see quantity over quality. If we could get a superstar like Joe Johnson, as well as other quality players like Aldridge or Gay, and couple them with players like DH34 and Brook as well as our current young players and next year’s draft picks, we can have a very solid team from top to bottom. I don’t want to run into the mistake of having a strong lineup with a weak bench which we had a few years ago. Instead, I would like ownership to get 1 or 2 solid players, and then use the rest of the money to get solid role players and bench players to make the team solid from top to bottom, just like the LA Lakers. The only concern I have is ownership’s willingness to spend some money.

Aw man imagine Dwayne Wade and Lebron playin for the Nets in Brooklyn 2010.
by Andrew on Aug 7, 2009 2:36 PM EDT reply actions
I don’t want that bum Lebron. The last thing I want is for my favorite team to have its star player refuse to be a good sport. He still said even if he could do it again, he still wouldn’t shake hands with the Magic players. Ill take VC and a losing team ANY DAY over a winning team with a punk like that.

I am tired about speculating about the scenarios at this point. Summer of 2010 is going to be high drama however. Next years NBA finals will only be the lead in to the bigger show.
To have a shot at Lebron the Nets need new ownership in place and a Brooklyn area under construntion. Still, playing in Izod is a huge disadvantage and probably disqualifies us from consideration. The only shot I see at getting Lebron, is that the Nets need to find a way to get him and another star, a guy like Bosh. Based on the moves the Cavs have made this summer, they will not be able to sign another max free agent next year. It doesnt look like the Knicks will be able to either, unless the projected salary cap for 2010 is overly pessimistic. The Nets do not have the ability to sign 2 max free agents yet. I can envision a scenario where they would be able to get the necessary space, but it requires dumping Yi along with Najera into some other teams’ cap space and possibly trading away our draft picks for future picks. At that point, you possibly offer Lebron and Bosh maximum contracts, and sell them on the promise of a Brooklyn move and a dynasty not seen since Jordan’s Bulls -
Harris
Lee
Lebron
Bosh
Lopez
with CDR, TWill, a yet to be detrmined backup PG and big man, coming off the bench.

For someone to not want Lebron on this team is crazy. The guy is an amazing player. Yeah he messed up with the ORL thing but that isnt enough for me to not want him on this team.
That said, I really doubt that lebron and wade would come to this situation. Unless, like most have said, the arena in brooklyn has already starting construction by the end of the 09-10, I really doubt they come here. I HOPE I AM WRONG!

no.. why bother… the Rat still owns the team… the above is all an illusion… Brooklyn, Lebron, bosh, ya’ll must be doin’ drugs… who is going to pay for all this… its like believing in Obama’s health care plan… pure fantasy

People keep tiresomely arguing against points that nobody has made. NOBODY SAID WE ARE DEFINITELY GETTING LEBRON. the article is about how much cap space we have. the end. yes, it does put us in a good position to get him, if other favorable conditions are also met. stop wizzing in everyone’s cornflakes for no reason.
by JT on Aug 7, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions
I still think that clearing up cap space from the VC trade wouldn’t land the Nets any good players. If Kobe, Lebron, or DWade really did want to come to the Nets, they would have done so already be it free agency or no free agency. If they don’t land anyone good by 2010, then they have actually lost someone they really need and it was all for nothing. Honestly, the Nets don’t need some player who thinks that the game is only about them and deserves more just for that, which is why VC came to the Nets in the first place when he could have just stayed with the Raptors the whole time.

OH, heres my 12 cents. Several things must happen. We must get new ownership with an infusion of money and a mentality of we must spend money to make money and WIN NOW!!!!. I have it on good information that there is a serious new potential buyer in play that is more than committed to Brooklyn and ready to get the deal done.
Nows here the good stuff as they say. Lebron is not your conventinal type. You must remeber that he put his crew that he grew up with in charge of every fianncial and promotinal aspect of his personal and professional life. Very much like JayZ. If youve noticed for JayZ aside from one outside figure his crew that he grew up with and trust runs his empire.
I only say that because they are both cut from the same cloth and are closer than we know. Would he come here to build an empire with his boy, maybe he just would. Jay does have over 20M invested with he Nets.
I’m just saying…. I am like the rest of you. Most of the time I’m thinking hel@ No!! There no way hes leaving Cleveland for Brooklyn. But then again…. He can do in NY what he cant do anywhere else in the world. Lebron is a generational athlete that deserves to be on the Big stage. Imagine what they can do with there own NBA franchise. Just the meechadise alone that they could sell. What if Lebron bought into Rocawear, hummm… Especially with an economy on the upswing.

I’m looking forward to the season, much as I look forward to any start of the season.
I just don’t get why everyone is soooo jazzed about THIS team.
Are there highlights of Yi, Lee, Battie, Twill and Alston that I haven’t been allowed to view?
What’s more fun? Watching a team win, or watching people “develop”? Come on.

@ BigEd:
Where did you hear this new info. about ownership?
btw this article is not about LeBron it is about CAP SPACE. I too wish that LeBron would come here but honestly all of this talk about him leaving will only make more depressed when he stays or ownership decides they don’t want to spend the money.
by Sean on Aug 7, 2009 4:41 PM EDT reply actions
What happens with all this cap space is this: overpaying players that don’t make a difference anymore than Carter did. We’ll be overpaying for some aging stars just to keep this young core happy, since neither Lebron nor Wade would be a Net.
by biggie on Aug 7, 2009 5:06 PM EDT reply actions
@BigEd
Last report I saw was that Jay-Z invested 3 million dollars in the Nets, not 20 million. Also, he sold his share of Rocawear a few years ago for $150-200 Million dollars I forget the exact figure.

Yeah lets retool our whole team to get Lebron, when he gets here, he’ll just go to the next best team after he is done with a few years.
Ill take Wade, Bosh, Amare, Lebron…. in that order.
by Tim on Aug 7, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions
Unless we can get a winning coach, I can’t see anyone coming to the Nets. Look at Boston. Despite there lows before they got KG, Doc Rivers is a well respected coach. KG went to play for Doc and Pierce in that order. Ray followed a hungry team with a general as a coach. The coached the free agents have played for run circles around Franks. I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t see anyone coming to the Nets. If ANY one of the star free agents come, be sure to see an old all star to follow, excepting a vet minimum if the opt is there.
by Ely on Aug 7, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions
Ask the Chicago Bulls about how having a ton of capspace worked out for them a few years back when all of the big name free agents wanted nothing to do with them
Well, i suppose its better to have some money to play with than no money at all
Oh! that’s right! What money?!? This team will sustain even heavier losses than it did this past season! pffffft!
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Aug 7, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions
That’s way off. First off the other people are the league, coaches, players, and media LOVE Frank. Second of all, they all hated Doc Rivers until they won. He stunk, and still does in my opinion. And The coach of the year, Brown, garbage. He has Lebron so he won coach of the year? Questionable decision after questionable decision. Coaches like Sloan, Jackson, Popovich, those are coaches. I don’t even like Larry Brown. But y’all need to remember just because a coach wins doesn’t mean he is good. I could win as coach to some of these stacked teams.
by Tim on Aug 7, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions
Get Lebron and Phil Jackson.
Jackson should retire as coach with the last team he played with in the NBA.
by Krakista on Aug 7, 2009 8:42 PM EDT reply actions
@ Ely
Ray Allen and KG didn’t choose to play for Doc Rivers. They were traded to the Celtics, so they had to play for him. And before the Celtics got the big 3, Doc’s job was in serious jeopordy and he was about to be fired when his team had one of the worst seasons in franchise history.

other than bosh wade stat or lebron (in order of who i would prefer) there r many good possible free agents next year other than them how bout joe Johnson, Rudy gay, LaMarcus Aldridge, ginobli, dirk and these are all unrestricted free agents oo and theres boozer lol. there is way more talent than just them 4 we can afford 2 of these player like Aldridge n gay??

by tu vieja on Aug 7, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions
Well, in my deepest of hopes, I hope we need just need a 3. I hope that our 1,2,4,and 5 positions already in place develop to what I think they can develop into.
Now IF that happens, even though I really don’t care for Rudy Gay’s game… IF that all happens, we would have one pretty good fast athletic run and gun team, and there aren’t that many players with Gay’s athletic ability. So that would be nice.

i think travis outlaw could get the job done at the 4 for us…he is still young.

Call me crazy, but I’m scared James might want to join the clippers.
Wouldn’t that be great? He goes to LA, where he can shine with the others stars. Gets a chance to show up Kobe. And he would be playing with some good young players…Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin, Al Thornton, and Chris Kaman (when he is healthy)
That would be great TV, you got to believe David Stern would love that…thats right up his alley
by justin on Aug 8, 2009 5:12 PM EDT reply actions
Compared to the clippers, I think the Nets are in a diff league as far as potential. However, potential never won a basketball game, so I think it is all up to how the young Nets do this year and who they can get in 2010 to bring them over the top.
