Pipe Dream or Power Play?

In the lazy days of Summer 2009, Chad Ford is speculating on where next year's top free agents will land. Ford predicts the Nets will try for both Lebron James and Dwyane Wade...with Lebron the bigger target because of his youth. The problem, Ford notes, is that while the Nets and Knicks should have the money for Lebron, they "could be so depleted from a talent standpoint that he may not want to come".

Chad Ford makes me laugh. Has he seen the Nets current roster? How can he even compare them to the Knicks from a talent standpoint. The Nets have two legitimate building blocks in Brook and Devin at the two hardest positions to fill. Along with that, they have several promising young players such as Lee, TWill, Yi, and CDR. Saying they have a depleted roster and comparing them to the Knicks is assinine. Put Lebron and one other 2nd tier free agent around their current group and you easily have a championship caliber team for years to come.

The knicks are depleted, the nets will contend for a title right away if they can get lebron or wade.

T-Will scored 31 points, up in Seattle on Saturday. Nate Robinson, Jamal Crawford also played in the 2 day tournament.

Ford obviously trolls NetsDaily.com and steals my words for his stories.
A lot of us have been saying those opinions for some time now.

Everybody acts like our roster is terrible…I think the core we have is by far better than what the Heat have(minus wade)…They simply have a superstar to rely on.

Exactly.
We have a lot of young talent but they are inexperienced.
Aside from the fact that ownership is an absolute disgrace and the team is in limbo, the team would have to have a major breakthru season for Yi, Lopez, CDR, and Courtney Lee for ANY top tier free agent to consider signing with us(if we can afford to even pay them). Terrance Williams will have to have a solid rookie campaign.
It’s too many questions surrounding this roster right now. I think we have the makings of a solid young core, but its going to take a lot.
Also, Lawrence Frank is going to have to play them. If he goes with veterans for a majority of the season, that will screw everything up.

Gallinari
Chandler
Hill
Douglas
Sessions (Possibly)
Compared to
Lopez
YI
CDR
TWILL
Devin
Courtney Lee
Dooling (If he is not bought out)
Najera (He will be bought out)
Sean Williams (if they pick up his option)
Boone (If they pick up his option)
Being under contract during the Lebron a Thon sales event.
Even though I think Lebron is back with Cleveland and Wade going home to chicago if Miami can not deliver players to play with him, The Nets have the better Roster of players coming back.
This is the same ESPN that says that at the Trade deadline this season, the Knicks will trade Wilson Chandler.
I do not take anything they say and run with it. The Knicks would not have the money to sign players to be at 12 players if they sign Lebron and Wade.

Lawrence Frank plays rookies and other young players. It is a myth that he doesn’t. The only rookie he didnt play the last four years was Antoine Wright, who has proven he wasn’t worth the 15th pick in any draft, let alone one that had Danny Granger and Hakim Warrick sitting in the Green Room.
In 2006, He played Marcus Williams and Josh Boone (when he was finally healthy), started the marginal Hassan Adams in eight games.
In 2007, he gave Sean Williams 1,268 minutes to prove himself. Of the sixteen players drafted ahead of Williams half played fewer minutes.
And last year, he played Lopez, platooned Anderson and Yi and when CDR finally learned a position, he played him. Who was supposed to sit for CDR? Jarvis Hayes?

I think unless there are big injuries, many questions about the young Nets team will be answered by the time this year is over. Can Devin raise his all around game, or is he just a scorer? Can an offense run more through Brook, and can he be an 18-8 guy for a full year and still have fire on defense?
Is Lee as good as he looked at time, when he was on a more talented team? Is YEE (note the new and improved spelling) a player or a novelty act? Is Hayes a starting small forward on a playoff team? Can TWILL shoot the open shot, that he WILL be given? Can Marv keep his pants on and pink baby dolls hidden while covering the NETS on the road? Will people pay full price for the reduced sized hot dogs at the IZOD center? Will the construction in Brooklyn start for real? Will Conan attract any viewers older than 37? Will my Ex-Wife call and ask me to come home? Stay tuned!!!!

honestly i rather wade instead of lebron. wade can do it all off course lebrons stats are higher but i like wades aggressiveness a lot more.

whoever we sign either wade lbj stat or bosh i would b jumpin up n down if some other bum i would b pissed.

Celtics just signed Sheldon Williams. Don’t know if it says anything about their intention of resigning Big Baby. Either way, I think Williams was an overlooked free agent, an above average rebounder who can provide bulk anf toughness inside.
by Chris2 on Aug 3, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions
There’s no way anyone would ever take Wade over LBJ. LBJ can do EVERYTHING on the court and still has the potential to do more whether it’s leading to scoring to passing to rebounding to defending to bringing intensity to being aggressive. Wade wouldnt even pick Wade over LBJ. Wade is a clutch 4th qtr scorer, defends when he wants, is aggressive and brings intensity too, but what does he do better than LBJ? LBJ can single-handedly make any team a top 4 seed in either conference, Wade can make any team a playoff team but only top 4 depending on who he is with. LBJ > Wade any day of the week.

Sessions? Milw. may match
2010 #1? Nope, Utah has it.
Nets Next Year….
Harris
Lee / CDR
T.Will
Yi
Lopez
+
Dooling? Probably bought out for cap
Najera? Maybe bought out for cap (expensive buyout)
S.Williams? Player option probably decline for cap/lack of production

2010 NJ #1
2010 DAL #1

Alot more cap space than NY
The choice seems obvious to me. NJ is far more talented.

I would take wade over Lebron, simply because Lebron wont age well. He is all athleticism. Wade at least has skill.
by Tim on Aug 3, 2009 4:59 PM EDT reply actions
Just keep hoping that Gallinari continues to have back problems throughout the upcoming season. He is a big X factor to the Knicks’ chances of being competitive.

No state income tax in Florida. 2010 free agent sweepstakes advantage: Miami.
by Ispartan on Aug 3, 2009 5:47 PM EDT reply actions
I live in Palm Coast, FL. half the year. No state tax but they get you other ways. NJ will sign a major FA. Bank on it. Well… maybe cash and carry.

Opie wouldn’t know a talented player if he ran him over.
by libigman on Aug 3, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions
@mike, maybe if agents have to get creative in this economy and offer a no payments, no interest plan or perhaps layaway, the Nets could sign a free agent
by Ispartan on Aug 3, 2009 6:32 PM EDT reply actions
Ratner is not an idiot. You don’t make the kind of money he has made by being stupid. The plan is to be a good/great team when they move to Brooklyn. This might hurt alot of NJ loyalists, but it is a well constructed, thought out plan. Do you think Rod Thorn is just cashing in a check cause nobody else, including himself, wants him. I have more respect for Mr. Thorn and his character to think he would take money to be part of a charade. I don’t Kiki would stand for it either. The Nets are doing everthing right for a change. Don’t sign half-assed free agents (Davis, Warrick, Gooden, Simmons, Najera etc.) and don’t keep past their prime veterans just to finish 38-42 year after year. The past is past, and nothing going to change it. Lets look towards the future. That’s all we have in life.

@Tim
LeBron has the bulk and size to last a long time even if he wasnt athletic. Wade on the other hand has already been having season ending injuries and keeps getting hit and falling to the floor, I dont think he would last longer than LBJ.

Don’t see Wade, Lebron, and Devin co-existing on a basketball court.

@ Paul
Why do you keep emphasizing your “new and improved spelling” of Yi, a/k/a, in your eyes, Yee? His name is not pronounced Yi or Yee, it’s pronounced EEE.
by aymesq on Aug 3, 2009 8:27 PM EDT reply actions
StinkYi is the spelling it was and always will be.
by Tom F on Aug 3, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions
@ aymesq; Yi has been offically adopted by Nets fans and his newly adopted name is Yee. Pronounced Yeeeeeeeeeeeee.
by Mike on Aug 3, 2009 8:40 PM EDT reply actions
if the nets can land either one…much respect. I dont like lebron because the focus is only on him…basketball is a team sport. But he would save the franchise…and we would automatically compete for a title.

Zero chance – ZERO CHANCE the Nets get James or Wade. The Knicks? – well that’s a possibility. Why? Because they play in Madison Square Garden and are owned by Cablevision – that’s why. They fill the place up with one of the worst teams in all of sports. They have a clever GM and a good coach. Its a no brainer.
The Nets will try to build from within. Getting some nice drafts, maybe an unexpected trade for a second tier player etc… but that’s it. They have no money – period. Thorn is a little too clever for his own good – no one wants to deal with him. He’s batting zero after the Kidd trade. Giving away Anderson was a crime.
Frank will finish out the season. If he can do something with this roster – he deserves a one year extension (at a fraction of his current salary). My money is on him getting canned.
