Alston Stylin' with Harris

In a Saturday chat, HoopsWorld's Yannis Koutroupis says he doesn't think the Nets would be willing to give up Rafer Alston so easily--not based on his recent conversation with Kiki Vandeweghe. Kiki told Koutroupis how excited he is about Alston. One reason Alston may be sticking around: the great similarity between his style and that of Devin Harris, as Nets Are Scorching points out.

I’m all for professional teams bringing in local talents – whether they grew or went to college in the area.
Alston in Nets uni is not LBJ in Cavs’, but I’ll take it.

NBA General Managers are always saying stuff to position themselves to make deals or satisfy player’s egos. Maybe this is a little of both. The facts remain that we have one too many point guards, if Devin, Dooling and Alston are healthy. What remains to be seen is what Dooling’s post surgical status is. If he is 100% fit right now, then why not move Alston? Alston is too good a player to be the third point guard. Besides, isn’t TWILL supposed to be able to play the position as well? AND last year, there was an attempt to have CDR run the team as well. Watch for the first starting point guard to go down on a contender, and Alston gets traded. Alston and Sean for a lottery protected #1? It could happen, we just have to believe. That is, unless Sean is in a Denver jail! Alston, Sean and Simmons for Boozer? Does the math work?

Very interesting article and I hope that Thorn-Kiki-LFrank are on the same page as the writer. This makes absolute sense and having Dooling at the 2 makes even more sense defensively and offensively. Great move, b/c I think Battie is going to start at PF after Yi wilts.

Something no one mentions…this team is a LOT deeper than last year’s squad. Alston and Battie, TWill, plus improvements from CDR and Hayes (and maybe others).

I hope Frank will bench Simmon, Najara and Hassle right at the start of season and give PT to all young ones including Sean Williams. All these veterans will not make much difference, anyway. A PG like Alston makes more sense to retain him, he could be instrumental in developing our young SF like T. Will, CDR and Lee. Battie can lessen the pressure on both Boone and Sean, and most likely bring their confidence back. I just hope so that he will treat these young PFs like he treated Howard. Maybe also YI could learn some tricks from Battie. Carter tried to help the young PF’s but to me that doesn’t make sense he is not a center or a PF, VC should have help develope another SF or SG. Maybe this time Alston and Battie are far more effective in bringing the A game of these young ones.

This is a very good observation on these 2 players games.
Neither is a true shooter or an outstanding passser. Both players rely on their teammates to create space. Orlando had Lewis,Hedo abd DH, but NJ had only VC.

Now that there is no pure jump shooter on the Nets Devin will get more double teams and the lane will be clogged.

LFrank must keep the ball from sticking to Devins hands. Brook needs to touch the ball alot more this year to create space for the PG to drive and for the Nets shooters to have open looks 15 -20 away from the hoop.

Courtney Lee has to become a more of a spot up shooter for the Nets to be successfull. The Nets have too many players that play in the backcourt but have suspect jumpers.
DH
Lee
Alston
Dooling
CDR
Twill
Defenses are going to clog the lane and make the Nets move the ball and shoot from the perimiter.

Coaching will be the key this season.
LFrank is on the hot seat, he has to develop these young guys, get the veterans produactive minutes, and try to win games.
Thats a 3 headed monster no coach wants to battle. It will be an interesting year in NJ.

Rafer Alston has hit 100+ three’s for six straight seasons. He hit 115 last season, 192 three seasons ago…that’s 30 more than Carter ever hit in any season during his career and 34 more than Kittles ever hit. He has 963 three pointers in his career and when he hits his 37th this season, he will be only the 65th player to make 1,000 three pointers.

That’s not a “true shooter”?
