Pro-Arena Council Candidate Got $200,000 from Ratner

In the latest controversy over the Barclays Center, a pro-arena candidate for New York City Council admitted Wednesday that she has received $200,000 from Bruce Ratner's companies. Delia Hunley-Adossa is running against incumbent Letitia James, Ratner's biggest critic in the council. Hunley-Adossa has made no secret of her support of the project, often demonstrating with union workers at rallies.

I’m shocked and appalled that such a thing could happen. Giving money to a candidate that supports your interests? Surely this is unprecedented. Goo goo.

I laughed. In New Jersey, that would get you a visit from the jailer. In New York, eh.

I am not surpirsed that Delia Hunley-Adossa is getting funds from Ratner. His company does keep a blacklist of all the politicians who oppose the project and help their oppenents. He does in one of two ways, which is either funding their existing their candidate by giving endorsements to side with them or by creating when like they did for going against Tish James, who is a big opponent to his project. It’s obvious she was made to overturn that decision. BTW, she was part of Ratner’s secret CBA by no surprise either. Let’s not forget that Ratner did support whoever was running against Velmanette Montgomery knowing that she too was opposed to his project.

I think this was just posted because the BK people think the NJ people would jump all over this and think stuff is illegal when its not.

Well played…

Not really surprised at all.

@Net Income,

LOL!!!

Seriously, it’s a sad day when we’ve all become indifferent to this sort of behavior.

Trenton, there is no rule saying who is allowed to endorse who, but we do know that Hunley-Adossa does have connections with Ratner by reading about her.

Some of you guys need to just stop and get a life. A person or anyone providing financial support for a candidate that represents his or her interest, OK?? And? Yeah?? Ah?

I thought so.

Librarians get financial support from parents who represent their interest

This absolutely illustrates why government should not use eminent domain for private use. It’s far too easy to influence an ED decision with campaign contributions.

by BrooklynBound on Aug 27, 2009 4:34 PM EDT reply actions

Excellent point, BrooklynBound. As you said, there’s too much opportunity there for influence.

by MrT on Aug 27, 2009 5:57 PM EDT reply actions

I expect much more of this sort of thing to come out as the ground-breaking deadline approaches.

Wonder how many thousands, uhm, hundreds of thousands of dollars dddb is funding Tish James with? Oh wait, never mind,,, they’re just doing what’s right.

Who hasn’t this creep paid off?

by Isaac on Aug 27, 2009 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

stick to basketball ND, the politics seem to be confusing you.

it is not that Ratner is funding her campaign. He couldn’t give her campaign 200k even if he wanted to.

He is funding her shell organization, eg. paying her salary, so that she can be free up to run for office.

And she isn’t just an “arena supporter,” she is the chairwoman of the so-called Community Benefits Agreement in which she supposedly represents the community— ha ha ha—while her shell organization is funded mostly by Forest City.

Speaking of community benefits agreements, Bloomberg, Ratner’s buddy, calls them extortion. See:

The rat just wants the best government money can buy. Why spend it on the team when you can buy off political opponents.

by OPutney on Aug 27, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

That any of you find it acceptable that a guy can give money to someone, have her sign a gag contract to say only what he wants her to say, and then back her for public office is depressing and disgusting. That contract should disqualify her from running for dogcatcher! You may think you’re being “sophisticated” or “realistic” but what you’re doing is corrupting everything.

And for BASKETBALL?

Can someone explain why these politicians don’t have to recuse themselves from the vote when it involves someone who gave money to the campaign. I think they should be barred from voting because they have an obvious bias. i still support brooklyn, if not newark, but i think it should be done in a fair way.

by Tom on Aug 28, 2009 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

I find it acceptable within the range of public corruption on both sides of the river. Perhaps you should move upstate.

And you know and I know it’s not for basketball, so please cut the crap on that issue.

“Wonder how many thousands, uhm, hundreds of thousands of dollars dddb is funding Tish James with? Oh wait, never mind,,, they’re just doing what’s right.”

This is comparing apples and oranges here. The difference here is that a corporation [FCR] can endorse politicians, while a not for profit organization [DDDB] cannot. As much of they support Tish James, they are not allowed by the state to give her any money otherwise they can lose their tax deductibles. Those that are for profit can actually give endorsements be it from businesses, unions, or even lobbies. If we were to compare the endorsements of politicians between DDDB and FCR, you would find that DDDB hasn’t given any to even those who support their view, while FCR gives almost billions to politicians running against the ones they don’t like. Unfortunately, this country has a whole history of politicians from all levels taking the sides of those who give them the money, so this is not something new.

@NI
Corruption is bad anyway you cut it. Pointing at NJ and saying their is corruption doesn’t excuse it happening in this situation.

Pretty much. I suppose this corruption is excusable because of the parties involved.
