No Advance Scout, No Problem

SI's Steve Aschburner writes Friday about how several NBA teams have done away with the position of advance scout, the experienced basketball hand who would take in the next opponent's game, then provide the head coach with a detailed report. The Nets are among those teams, but by no means alone, Aschburner writes. Where the Nets are alone is in their willingness to talk about it, specifically Bobby Marks.

Was actually in a discussion about this with some other team bloggers and most of us came up with the same decision, with the amount of tape and other technological advances, this isn’t too much of a big deal. Mainly because now the coach is able to watch other teams’ games. Before the scout was the only way to know what was happening with other teams.

Maybe, but wouldn’t having an advanced scout allow Frank to focus more on developing his players and getting them ready for the next game rather him spending his time trying scouting the other team. Also, an advanced scout might see some things on another team that Frank or any head coach for that matter might not see on tapes.

@Jason – The head coach isn’t the one breaking down tape (I know from experience). The assistants (or even the program that was mentioned in the article) break it down and show the coach what they feel is important (or what the coach asks to see).
From my experience, the head coach isn’t the one making the game plan, it is the assistants. The head coach approves the gameplan, implements it in practice, and then makes the game-time adjustments. In my opinion I don’t see Lawrence Frank’s work load changing at all…but this does emphasize how important of a loss Brian Hill was.

Its not like College where teams are a mystery. I could tell you who your going to play and what they will bring to the table for goodness sake. Besides when you get to caught up in a plan they forget their own game.
Lets just run and gun!

The phrase “assistant” has been brought up in this discussion… I was under the impression that Opie was such a good coach that we were getting rid of these “assistants”? Or that the team was too broke to pay them so they went elsewhere… one of the two.
I’m not saying that the position of advanced scout is that necessary anymore, but SOMEBODY should be looking over tapes and whatnot. We can’t just pray that Opie watches the previous day’s sportcenter before a game. (SIDEBAR: I miss Michele Beadle as much as the next Nets fan, but sportsnation is laaaaaame)

Just another sign the team’s in financial trouble. The Rat’s move to Brooklyn is dead. He needs to sell. And I hope whomever buys the theam fires Yormark & Frank.
