The "Other" 2010 Free Agent

The boys down at Peachtree Hoops are worried about Joe Johnson. Like Lebron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, he'll be a free agent in 2010. They take a look around at who'll have the most money and most allure for JJ. The analysis: "New Jersey - Probably the best fit of any team. The Nets are on the rise, in a large market, and need an established shooting guard. Plus, they have the most money."

I could go for like Amare and JJ, but if were only signing 1 player we need lebron or wade to be a title contender.

by Kevin on Aug 11, 2009 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

And we have the most cap space, not the most money.

by Kevin on Aug 11, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions

Will have the number 2 Jersey waiting if he comes here

Have always liked Joe Johnson. He is not wade or Lebron, but is still an excellent player.

by VC3FAN on Aug 11, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

Lebron will be playing in newark with mikki moore, cliff robinson, antoine wright, hassan adams, zoran planninc, mile illic and maurice ager.

by johnny on Aug 11, 2009 3:17 PM EDT reply actions

I forgot about him. That would be nice to go along with a nice draft pick.

by Russ on Aug 11, 2009 3:24 PM EDT reply actions

yo r u kidding me? i been said that you are late i posted up a list of other free agents like a week ago n now ya wana post joe. comon

by tu vieja on Aug 11, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

@ Johnny
LOL, and LeBron would still carry that team into the playoffs.

by TheMann on Aug 11, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

yo depending on how lee twill n Yi do this season will determine on who we will go after next off season. like joe will b a great 2guard, gay will b a very athletic 3 or stat at the 4. thats just saying if we can’t get wade lebron or bosh which are the top 3 in nxt years free agency

by tu vieja on Aug 11, 2009 3:57 PM EDT reply actions

I THINK DAVID LEE WOULD COMPLETE THIS TEAM.
C – B.LOPEZ
PF – D.LEE
SF – Yi
SG – C.LEE
PG – D.HARRIS

LABRON WADE BOSH AMARE (FORGET ABOUT IT)

by d.Lasko on Aug 11, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

What about Melo? I expect Kiki to bring him in if he can’t get LBJ.

by mt57 on Aug 11, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions

if harris and lopez blossom further whose not to say joe johnson would make us a top 4 seeded playoff team? with some more complimentary pieces of course, but those 3 could be quite the next Big 3, and i’d be way more for some nice balanced team ball ala the Orlando Magic then the LeBron show.

by Matt N on Aug 11, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

@mt57

Melo is going to be available in 2011, not 2010.

by Jason on Aug 11, 2009 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

Melo has always made it pretty clear he wants to stay in denver and is expected to sign an extension before hitting FA.

by Kevin on Aug 11, 2009 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

I thought Courtney Lee was our up and comer for the 2 spot??

by BigEd on Aug 11, 2009 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

@ Matt N

I agree with you. I would rather get a couple of solid starters, along with some nice role players to fill out the bench to strengthen our team from top to bottom. Instead of signing for quality, let’s sign for quantity. Instead of giving our full attention on lebron or d-wade, we should try to get a couple of players from this list: Joe Johnson, Rudy Gay, Aldridge, Brewer, Mike Miller, Rudy Foye.

This list consists of some stars (Johnson, Gay, Aldridge) and solid bench players that can provide offense and energy (Miller, Brewer, Foye). It should also be noted that we may be able to get these people cheaper since all the attention will be diverted to Lebron, Wade, Bosh, and Stoudemire. We can certainly sign 2 of the star players, and possibly 1 of the bench players. Rather than having a big time free agent as the big superstar on the team, we would have a more balanced lineup from top to bottom. The Lakers won a championship by having some superstars (Kobe, Gasol) with a solid lineup and strong bench. Hopefully, our team can be molded to make it similar to the Lakers.

by Jason on Aug 11, 2009 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

First we need ownership that’s willing to spend more than a dime.

“I pity the fool!”

by MrT on Aug 11, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions

Gay and Aldridge will both be RFA. One at most will be leaving POR.

by Shawn G on Aug 11, 2009 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

I’ve brought up Joe Johnson before, i think he’d be a great pick up

if he were willing to pay for 2 million a year

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Aug 11, 2009 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

JJ and chris bosh r my favorite players in 2010 free agency

by netsfan on Aug 11, 2009 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

@Mr DB
You must mean 2 million cents lol.

@mt57
Carmelo has already made it clear he does not want to play for the Nets. They tried to make a trade for him last off-season and Carmelo voiced his displeasure to Denver ownership and they pulled the deal.

by TheMann on Aug 11, 2009 5:16 PM EDT reply actions

Joe Johnson sucks! Did anyone check his performance in the playoffs? He led a team with all above-average players, and shot horribly in either playoff series. I am not paying him big bucks at 29 for a long-term contract. If you look at him, he could see he’s totally slowed down. His defense on Carter when we played the Hawks was laughable. No thanks! I’d go for Gay who’ll have a lot more room for improvement.
If we end up paying Joe Johnson 15 M/year until he’s 34, that’s exactly the kind of situation I’m worried about. That guy has no driving game, and had a shooting percentage worse than Harris and Carter.

by biggie on Aug 11, 2009 5:33 PM EDT reply actions

I kind of have to agree with biggie. I think JJ is a great player, but to try and get him in 2010 would be pointless. He is not as consistent as VC, although he is arguably a better 3pt shooter. It would be like getting rid of Vince so we could get JJ…and im pretty sure that wont sit well with the rest of the Net fans, including me.

I think D-wade should b the target at the 2, but if Lee is good enough, we might not need one. Allthough, there is no such thing as “having too many stars”

by Matt on Aug 11, 2009 6:04 PM EDT reply actions

man all i know is, if we have a good season, even finish up somewhere close to 500, people would be crazy

by The Black Prince on Aug 11, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

Let’s see what Lee does this year. If Devin shares the ball a little better, and Lee progresses, we might not need Joe Johnson…I watched Lee on Comcast League Pass all year, and in the playoffs. He could be a very good player and goes both ways. Stan Van Gundy is an excellent coach, and THEY DID make the finals, didn’t they. Joe Johnson is a very good player, but he is not Dwade, or Melo…

by Paul Erstein on Aug 11, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions

We won 34 games with VC and couldn’t wait to dump his contract. Who thinks it would be any different with Johnson? Another guy who will want big $ that you can’t win with. If we are lucky enough to spend money on a FA it better be a great defensive PF. Everything else will be a waste of money other than Lebron.

by libigman on Aug 11, 2009 7:07 PM EDT reply actions

No joe johnson!
Lebron is our guy! Look for Bosh too!
The Nets need a 3 and a 4 for this team to win.
Lebron is the goal but signing Bosh or Amare seals the deal
LBJ aaaand wade would be toughest to get
Brooklyn is the place people!
Lebron could make his mark in NYC!
This is still a young franchise and Lebron would be this teams best player ever. Kobe can’t say that and won’t ever be able to
Lebron could lead the Nets in career points, rebounds, assists, and steals if he plays for 10 years in Brooklyn
$ would pour into this team, stadium, and city and into lebrons pocket!
Season tickets will sell out in weeks
Not months!
If Yi somehow stays it would make this team the biggest spectacle ever
David thorn wants Brooklyn to work so you know its gonna happen
Hold on to those season tickets and pray the Nets don’t win 20 games

by djheavyduty on Aug 11, 2009 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

This is Great..Lets all hope the nets can dig deep enough into the pockets and hope that they show interest in him. He will be a great assest to a up and coming team..Just like with the hawks. But the only problem may be he doesnt want to go through another rebuilding process which may be the key.

by Montynetfan on Aug 11, 2009 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

It would only not be better than the situation when Vince Carter was here.

by jarkid on Aug 11, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions

i like joe, but is he really that much of a difference from vince carter?..if we do try and get him, i hope he isn’t the only player we sign in the 2010 free agency class.

by jeffrey sutton on Aug 11, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Management won’t start committing dollars until the team is officially moving to Brooklyn and they have new investors coming in. If that doesn’t happen then who knows what will.

by Nets in 2010 on Aug 11, 2009 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Imagine signing Lebron James and Bosh we would be unstoppable
Brook
Bosh
Lebron
CLee
DHarris
Cant wait til next year.

by Dezhaun24 on Aug 11, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

lol johnson and bosh sounds unstoppable lol

by The Black Prince on Aug 11, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

Not a fan of signing Johnson at all. The point is to sign a young up and coming free agent, not a 29 year old who may have 2 star seasons left in him. If we go the no name route, I would be very happy to see Rudy Gay on this squad – but again – you can’t worry about 2010 free agents until you see how Yi, Lee, CDR, TWill and Hayes play this year. If Lee develops into an all-star type player at the 2 – why would you even think of giving big money to Johnson? And you also have to factor in who we select in the draft. And I still expect plenty of trades between now and the start of free agency next year. We have some valuable trade chips in Alston, Battie, Dooling and even Najera – and I am sure we will trade at least some of them.

On another note, I am doing a charity hike to benefit prostate cancer research from Aug 19 to the 29th. I will be hiking 250 miles of the North Country/Fingerlakes Trail in conjunction with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. If anyone wishes to make a fully tax deductible donation, please visit www.active.com/donate/ryanmcgovern.

@ NI: Dimemag makes no mention of the NETS, but a picture is worth a thousand words…

by Will on Aug 11, 2009 9:37 PM EDT reply actions

The Nets aren’t going to pay for any big free agents next season because they have no money to spend.

Understand that this coming season, the IZOD will be empty and this franchise will bleed about 20x faster than it did last season

There’s no reason to speculate on who we will pick up.

Its better just to pray to whatever deity or force that you believe in that Harris, Lopez, Lee, Yi, CDR, and Williams can pan out into solid pros.

That is your only hope.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Aug 11, 2009 11:58 PM EDT reply actions

as long as we get a solid star to play witht eht guys we got now, we’ll be fine

by The Black Prince on Aug 12, 2009 1:40 AM EDT reply actions

and that really doesny make sense mr. dollar bill, the nets can more then compensate for there losses with the cap space we have. We have the money for a max contract, actaulyl we can afford to. 30 million in cap space next year plus two mid level exceptions. siging the the star free agent should be the last thing were worried

by The Black Prince on Aug 12, 2009 1:53 AM EDT reply actions

How about Yao Ming, if he recovers.

by JuliusIrving on Aug 12, 2009 3:39 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah and we should get Sam Cassel to coach the team… old Gozzel Head coaching makes as much sense as most of the stuff being posted around here these days… geeze!

by NetRick on Aug 12, 2009 8:33 AM EDT reply actions

black – cap space doesn’t equal money. the nets aren’t making money and need it to move to brooklyn. look at these factors: 1) the laying off and salary reductions of employees, 2) falling attendance rates, 3) the owner desperately looking for a buyer or investor, 4) the reduction of expensive player contracts

does that look like a team that is ready to spend alot of money in the near future?

also, since when do teams get TWO mid-level exceptions in a given year? and our cap space will NOT be $30 million.

by ru on Aug 12, 2009 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

one more thing, i do agree with you that the FA signing should be the last thing we should be worrying about.

we should really be worrying about who’s going to be the next owner of the team. the direction this team goes will depend on this more than ANYTHING.
