Nets-Sixers Drop to 0-2 in Orlando

The Nets-Sixers lost to the Utah Jazz, 83-68, Tuesday evening at the Orlando Summer League. The Turnpikers shot just 34 percent from the field and recorded just nine assists. Chris Douglas-Roberts was their only player in double-figures, scoring 27 points on 8-14 shooting, and has now gotten to the line 24 times in two games. Terrence Williams shot poorly again (3-11) and finished with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, a steal, a block and four turnovers.

T-Will was awesome today. He airballed a couple lay-ups, but he’s still adjusting to scoring with contact.
He scored off the dribble again and made a TON of hustle plays and defensive pressures, and should have had about 8 assist if he wasn’t passing to SL players.

I was speaking offensively. Defensively he was a game changing stud

I fell asleep in the 2nd half it was that bad. If it wasn’t for the funny commentators I might’ve knocked out way before that. Atleast CDR is holding it together. TWill, lets get it together brotha.

At least we know our missed offense will come from CDR

What a bust!
4 turnovers he will never survive in NBA
Plus he airballed a layup shakes head

okay, y’know how Bobby started at the 3 for us last year, but could do NOTHING but shoot three’s….?
Congrats, we just got us a 3 who does EVERYTHING…..except hit three’s, so cut the kid a break….

I repeat, AT LEAST we didn’t get J-rue….
…that kid was so bad, they told T-Will to run the point, and he was WAY better….

Hope the competition for minutes is fair. If so, I’ll be glad to see a lot of CDR this season. GO NETS!
by Jeff on Jul 7, 2009 7:39 PM EDT reply actions
I hope CDR is enjoying his playing time and shot opportunities, because he is NOT going to get much of either during the season, unless there are injuries or a roster move or two. AND I wish TWILL would shoot a little better, after all, this is only summer league…

CDR Is the man! Hopefully Opie allows him to play
by GShock on Jul 7, 2009 8:03 PM EDT reply actions
Give Twill some slack. He didn’t get the ball that much, only when he rebounded. He does so many other things well to make up for his poor shooting. He plays good, if not great, D, passes quick and precise, hustles, and rebounds.
by Vinsanity on Jul 7, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions
TWill was game’s leading rebounder in 25 minutes – more than Speights.
I still compare him with a young DWade. Dwayne had limited shooting range his first few years, so he didn’t take many 3s.
TWill should be playing mostly the SF (SG is set with Lee/CDR,Dooling) and and maybe some backup point. If only TWill could finish more shots inside the way DWade always could. They are about the same muscular size, except TWill is 1-2 inches taller.
If Nets had Boozer, they wouldn’t need any offense from TWill. Imagine all the assists that TWill and Harris would give to Boozer.
by jerry25 on Jul 7, 2009 8:14 PM EDT reply actions
Do you know who Dwayne Wade is Jerry25? Comparing Twill to Dwade is blasphemy honestly.
And CDR played great again. 27 Pts on 14 shots. When he got attempts last season he produced around 9 pts a game. Every game over 20 min he averaged around 12ppg. I know it wasn’t a lot of games but the man is just a pure scorer.
And stop making excuses for Twill’s play. He’s not doing anything out there right now. That’s not saying he can’t or won’t but he’s not showing ANYTHING yet. Yesterday CDR guarded Rush for majority of the game. And don’t blame his bad outings on the Summer League or First Games because all three rookies last year played well in the first couple summer leagues games…Let’s keep it honest people.

We are going to regret including Anderson in the VC deal. He is going to be a solid backup on a team that returns to the conference finals this coming season. AND he is going to have a great role model to learn from, Reshard is a great PF, maybe top five in the league. I guess you have to give to get.
by Paul Erstein on Jul 7, 2009 8:30 PM EDT reply actions
I think we all regretted it instantly, but I also think CDR will have a hard time beating out C-Lee as a starting 2, and Ryan really does a lot of the same things as Yi, so Yi will be the one who determines how much we actually “gave up”…..
I will be rooting for Ryan all year though.
by kidshizzle on Jul 7, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions
Paul I dont see Magic returning they are lucky they got passed Celtics this year it will be Celtics and Cavs. Pistons will also beat Magic. Carter chokes in the playoffs and with out Hedo they wont be doing to much better they lost there rookie, backup point and Battie. Orlando was lucky to make it to the finals this year.

direct quote from David Thorpe:
david b. thorpe Ryan Anderson is the best player on the floor in this game. Pruitt and Karl the next best.
..when pruitt and karl come up in “best player on the floor” conversation, you have to take stats with a grain of salt…
…remember, CDR had 27 points and doesn’t play in th paint, and took ZERO three’s…..

Randy Oreens,
No one is lucky to be in the finals. Teams deserve it. The Magic outplayed Clevland. Period.
by JJ on Jul 7, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions
Losing Ryan Anderson does suck. He is such a good kid and he plays with a lot of heart. When his shooting in on, he can really fill it up. I enjoyed watching him and was looking forward to seeing him grow. I do think Lee will prove to be the better player over time however. I was hoping Orlando would sign Rasheed Wallace or some other PF and then bury Anderson on the bench, maybe face some luxury tax issues, then not pick up his third year option, so we could get him back in 2010. Fat chance of that happening though.

Off topic, but, I am getting concerned that the Dallas pick is going to be some what disappointing next draft. I had high hopes that the Dallas pick would be in the lottery with ours. Now, Dallas will re-sign Kidd, sign Gortat (which could be an upgrade to Dampier), and they are looking to bring Marion on board as well. Yikes!
by JustinNJ on Jul 7, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions
Justin,
Yeah, you can’t have high expectations about that Dallas pick. To me, as long as Nowitzki is healthy, they will be a playoff team. As long as they have Nowitzki, they will also be big spenders to try to surround Dirk with talent. If they get Marion, they can actually be really good. At the same time, if Nowitzki tears his ACL early in the season, it will be a lottery pick no matter who else they get, so there is hope. But, if it can be around pick number 20 or so, I’d be satisfied. 2010 is supposed to be a deep draft and I think we could still get a good rotation player there.
by Chris2 on Jul 7, 2009 9:02 PM EDT reply actions
Lee is not all that great nor dominant. He just recieved some good opps. to play opps that CDR DID NOT get last season until late in the season. I believe CDR is better and was ranked higher coming out in last years draft. CDR>Lee
by The Pharmacist on Jul 7, 2009 9:03 PM EDT reply actions
yeah, but if the Warriors get Amare, we’ll get that pick next year.
That would give us a LOT of options in a deep draft.

kidshizzle-
The first year we would be able to exercise the Golden State pick would be 2011 not 2010…

Let’s see: CDR is playing against no name wanna bees, while Lee was playing against Kobe, Lebron, Pierce, etc. etc. Be real folks. CDR is a good 6th man, an offensive talent, perhaps, but Lee has shown he can compete in this league and in playoffs. Plus, Lee defends. I’d be shocked if any coach in this league started CDR over Lee. CDR is a good energy player off the bench. Let’s just hope he learns some D.
by chris paul on Jul 7, 2009 9:23 PM EDT reply actions
CDR and Lee are both very good young prospects. I’m glad we have both of them. Lee starts though. He is much more proven and is the better defender. I like the idea of having one of CDR/TWill starting at SF so we have that extra playmaker on the floor with scorers like Lopez, Harris, and Lee. I’m thinking TWill to start eventually cause he needs to be surrounded by scorers whereas CDR can create offense out of nothing, like might be needed for our second unit.
TWill needs to develop at least one shot he can hit consistently. Look at Bruce Bowen. He is one of the greatest role players of the past decade. He basically has one shot he can make – that corner 3. Look at Battier, does he have a great repotoire of shots he can make? Basically, he shoots a mid 30s clip on threes and doesnt do much else on offense. But both Battier and Bowen keep defenders honest and make themselves a threat. So TWill will need to do that eventually if he is to succeed. But TWill has passing ability that both of those 2 guys don’t. So, one would expect TWill has the chance to be better than both, but even if he becomes their equal, we have a very good selection at #11 in a weak draft.
by Chris2 on Jul 7, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions
I reiterate: Hope the competition for minutes is fair. That will ensure that CDR gets a lot of playing time this season. May the best players start. Whoever they may be.

@iknowhoops Says:
“Do you know who Dwayne Wade is”?:
I know that it wasn’t until later on in his first year that people payed attention to DWade, when the Shaq deal was announced. DWade had limited shooting range, but he was already a great finisher.
TWill looks like he will be a better rebounder, may be comparable on D., assists and blocked shots, at this early stage of their careers. TWill has the advantage of being taller and may also be better at dunking. In his rookie season, DWade only scored 16 ppg, 4 Reb., 4.5 asst. and 1.4 steals per game (35 mpg) (Of course noone is saying TWill is a scorer – he wouldn’t have to be at the SF if Nets got a scoring PF)
Yes, I know who DWade is; and soon You will know who TWill is!

we selected another Williams of bust. Why would Thorn be so fascinated with Williams?
We should have drafted Earl Clark or James Johnson, damn it.
by jarkid on Jul 7, 2009 10:26 PM EDT reply actions
this team really sucks, we can’t give up Ryan Anderson, he is a young stud, and always better than Yi Jianlian….sigh… Thorn should be fired now.
we gave up two versatile players in Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson.
by jarkid on Jul 7, 2009 10:28 PM EDT reply actions
BL/Battie
Swat/Boone
Yi/Hayes or TWill
CDR or Lee/Dooling
DH/Dooling/Alston
The starting SG spot should really be highly contested will be the highlight in preseason. IMO Yi would be a better SF then Marvin Williams and Swat would be better than Boozer. To those who think I’m nuts, all that has to happen is to give it a chance. I say thats a second round playoff team with cap space and youth. We’re big, athletic and defensive minded. Just the way it needs to be.

T Will hasn’t even been colached yet.. Why would anyone make a judgement based on 2 summer league games? We know he can finish, rebound, pass and play D. Even RJ had to learn how to shoot better. T Will look like a great all around athlete that has the skills of a Pippen. And Pippen had to learn to shoot as well…
by supreme on Jul 7, 2009 10:31 PM EDT reply actions
T-Will is a good dunker in the open floor, but I don’t think he is a good finisher in the half court, yet.
by Joshua on Jul 7, 2009 10:34 PM EDT reply actions
good lord, I have some dinner and now T-Will is a combination of Wade and Pippen, Yi is actually a 3, Swat is actually a basketball player, and Ryan is versatile but the Nets suck….
…what happened in here?

omG poor team, ratner and thorn have grounded them to false hopes of getting lebron on 2010.
sigh !!!!

I don’t like losing RA either. However, we should hold off on judgment until (hopefully soon) the Nets get a replacement PF who hopefully is a rebounding Moose.
In that case, there wouldn’t have been room for Yi, RA and the yet to be obtained PF – Unfortunately, I doubt that Orlando was willing to take Yi instead of RA, even if Nets offered him.
If Nets don’t get PF ASAP, then they can kiss this season goodbye. No matter what he says publicly, I really don’t think that Thorn anticipates going into season with Yi (still an experiment) as starting PF and Boone/Swat (who LFrank wouldn’t play), Simmons as backups.
by jerry25 on Jul 7, 2009 10:55 PM EDT reply actions
Would Yi even put up the kind of numbers Anderson is putting up in the summer league? That’s a question you have to ask.
Anyone with a brain saw that regardless of his flaws, Anderson was easily the better player over Yi. Now we have to pray that Yi actually pans out because we dumped Anderson
CDR with another solid game, this kid is going to push Lee for minutes or will force Frank to start both of them. I want CDR to get serious minutes this season, the kid is working his tail off right now. I like the fact that CDR makes a conscious EFFORT to get to the line and doesn’t stand on the perimeter settling for shots. Lets hope this mentality transfers over to the big stage, I have enough faith in the kid to think it will.
Williams just needs to get comfortable offensively. Defensively and everywhere else this kid is ready to go. I don’t want to see that bum Simmons cutting into his minutes. If we are going to lose, lets lose with CDR, Williams, and Lee getting the bulk of the minutes along the perimeter with Harris.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 7, 2009 11:57 PM EDT reply actions
T will can be the right SF. What Hayes and Simmons lack is play like a point forward and create. They are both strictly three point artists. T Will can drive and draw attention and probably if he plays together with Brooks or Yi he can create for them. CDR has more offense but I think he is not that quick, too methodical sometimes.
The key is T will should be able to finish. I noticed he can dunk which is a plus. If not he just have to play defense and let Hayes, CDR, Dooling and Battie provide the offense. If he plays with the first five, the offense is more efficient, so I will not worry about his offense.
But again as I mentioned before it’s up to LF to use his talent.

Randy —
We have to make this season about the young guys, and there is no one on the team that can play the three and defend and pass as well as T-Will.
It’s not certain he’ll start, but he would compliment the other starters the best, and needs BURN.

face the facts – twill is an embarrassment on the offensive end. he shot 40% for his college career and had no business being a lottery pick. kiki stinks

@Mr. Dollar Bills
Totally agree about CDR. If Frank plays the best players, CDR will get a(nother) chance to prove his worth to the Nets. Hope there is no bs in the game. Frank and the boys seem to suffer from clouded perception.

People are jumping off bridges after 2 summer league games. Even if TWill is not scoring he does all the little thnings that translate to wins. Relax. This kid will be good. He is a very good fit for this team.
And CDR will be the 6th man and I could see becoming a Ben Gordon type.
