Nets-Sixers Lose to Pacers in Overtime

The Nets' and Sixers' collaborative squad lost its first game at the Orlando Summer League Monday afternoon, falling to the Pacers, 75-67 in overtime. The Nets-Sixers were led by Philly's Marreese Speights, who finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Douglas-Roberts added 20 points on 6-of-12 shooting, getting to the line 11 times. Terrence Williams shot just 1-for-8 from the field, but was active, picking up nine boards, two assists, two steals and three blocks.

Loved Speights from last season. Can the Nets fudge the paper work and actaually get him on the Nets squad?
Thats the type of player they need to put next to Brook and Yi.

Hansborough had 17 & 5 in 25 mins plus 3 steals and a block.
Looks like TWill played good D, Brandon Rush went 4-18 in about the same number of mins as TWill got so assume they were matched on each other a good portion of that.

Randy Oreens, how is Twill a bust? This was his first summer league game. He wasn’t even classified as a good shooter in the first place. He looks to be a very good rebounder and passer and just a good all around player. If he just makes those jumpers, he could be impactful.
by Vinsanity on Jul 6, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions
Its only 1 game. And the first one at that. But you have to like the production from CDR and it looks like TWill makes an impact in the game regardless of if his shot is falling – which is why I continue to think he is the perfect fit for team. If we have a 2/3 grabbing 8 or 9 boards on a consistent basis – this team will be off to the races. That is an element we have not had since JKidd.

Vinsanity his D was good but he better work on his shooting

I was just looking at boxscore – and I know this is totally unorthodox but I’m surprised they did not require Sean Williams to play in summer league. The kid needs minutes in a game time situation – regardless of the competition. The Nets are paying him nearly 2 million bucks. They should have required him to play in summer league. Another 150 minutes of game action over the summer plus about 15 hours of practice time would have been good for him.

hard to glean from a summer league camp game who will be an nba player.

So basically, y’all are saying that Terrence Williams will only be a defensive specialist in this league - a poor man’s Trenton Hassell.
Thank God we got him rather than Hanzy.

T-Will made some BEAUTIFUL passes, crashed the boards, and had several blocks and steals…
..he also hit a jumper off the dribble, although I admit it looks like his scoring will take some time.
It was also his first game ever against guys who have actually played in the NBA, so I’d expect a few nerves…
…at least we didn’t draft J-rue. THAT kid looks like a bust….

This team has no good PG so don’t expect much out of TWill offensively. The majority of the points he gets this season will probably be on the break/those that he is set up for. Kid will need some time to develop his halfcourt game though he has a ton of potential there.

T-Will reminds me most of DWade, because he is so strong (upper and lower body). He makes steals and blocks just like DWayde. You may recall DWade wasn’t a good shooter either, but he improved every year.
TWill will be fine at SF and oscassional PG. Lee and CDR/Dooling can split the SG spot. I wouldn’t want to put pressure on TWill to be a shooter. However, if that comes around – then Allstar.

I do NOT “twitter”…..
but D Thorpe does, and i thought this was interesting….
"
Williams has great feet on defense, but defending Rush on a dribble drive is not that hard. Still, I like everything about Williams except his shot.
CDR has an old man’s game. And I mean that as a huge compliment. He’s crafy and smart, and will be playing this way for a decade plus."

Was that video streamed coverage and play by play the WORST in history? Coming off of watching abc/espn coverage of the playoffs, and Breen/Van Gundy/Jackson, watching and listening to todays game was quite painful, AND that’s even before the pain of the bad bad summer league quality play. The “Pikers” had but nine assists and TWILL shot 1 for eight. But Spieghts and CDR looked as good as legit NBA players should have, surrounded by very green rookies and potential euroleague bench warmers. WHO WERE THOSE IDIOTS GABBING THE PLAY BY PLAY???? Were they some small market radio team, working in exchange for free groceries from the Piggly-Wiggly? I worked at a radio station years ago, where the morning drive guy got paid zero cash, but got free groceries, a free car, and a “trade out” wife and kids!

Dang. I wanted to be the first to call T-Will a bust! :)
Looks like Hansbrough had a nice game…
by A.S. on Jul 6, 2009 6:53 PM EDT reply actions
BTW, howcome Courtney Lee isn’t playing? He played about the same number of minutes last season as Brandon Rush did. Is there any explanation for his non attendance?
by A.S. on Jul 6, 2009 6:57 PM EDT reply actions
From listening to part of the game, I think the announcers were big Magic fans (with some kind of announcing experience).
They were certainly knowledgeable about the NBA, but it was their opinion that it was fine to totally biased, especially against NJ/Phila.

TWill a bust? He was by far the best defender on the floor.
People shouldn’t comment on this if they didn’t watch the game. Jrue Holiday today was a total bust, stalling the offense with his over-dribbling and turnovers.
No, TWill is not a poor man Trenton Hassell. Trenton has never been a defensive player that got into the passing lane and got steals, Terrence is. Terrence Williams didn’t get one open shots today. HOpefully having Harris to set him up will help, but his defense is great.
The great Brandon Rush was shooting poorly. You can’t judge everything on Summer league.
by biggie on Jul 6, 2009 7:11 PM EDT reply actions
Yes T Will is a nice pick up. This guy can pass and energetic in rebounds and defense. If he plays bench with Battie, Boone,Hayes and Dooling we will be a good fast breaking defensive team.
If Hayes shooting improves and Dooling can still run then we will be alright. T Will should be handling fastbreaks, he looks like he will be a a much reliable passer than Dooling.
by JuliusIrving on Jul 6, 2009 7:31 PM EDT reply actions
TWill is not a bust…it was the first summer league game, and for the most part, everyone plays bad the first few games. At least TWill was active in other areas like passing, rebounding, and D.
CD-R was agressive, although there were times he took really bad shots and refused to pass, overall I think he has a good chance of having a good season this year.
And Jrue Holiday was hands down the worst player of the game. Practically everytime he had the ball he shot it or drove to the basket only to get blocked or turn the ball over.
by Matt on Jul 6, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions
Terrence Williams looks like he is some experience away from being the best all around player on this team. I’d like to see him get time as a point forward for the majority of the season because from what I saw today his passing is legit and he actually can defend. He is just a guy that you can’t worry about the jumpshot because he’s trying to make his presence felt. I think the shooting will come.
CDR looking good. I want to see an open competition for that starting two guard spot between CDR and Lee.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 6, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions
why are you guys calling twill a bust? i think he did well…great d, rebounding, and passing. Its been clear that he has no offense and your surprised he only scored 2 points? at least he didn’t shoot 15 times and contributed in a different way.
the summer league team wouild be better off with twill playing pg…jrue is not a good playmaker.
i think twill did good and its clear that he has to improve his offensive. i’ll come to him.
donte amd galante can be funny at times because they say random stuff…but there jerks for the most part because they should be calling the game.

Ryan Anderson went for 21 pts and 7 rebs, on 6 of 14 shooting in the Magic’s 77-88 loss to Oklahoma City. Oops.

Nets desperately need to get another PF in the next couple of weeks to replace RA. Boozer is the only PF available who Nets wouldn’t have to agree to pay past the 2009-2010 season.

i said it before they drafted him, twill is in no way worth the 11th pick. the dude can’t shoot. antoine wright was a good defender too and nobody misses him. this is the pros. sam young would have been a better pick and he didn’t go until the 2nd round.
by drmagoo on Jul 6, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions
TWill worth every penny of a 11th pick.
His defensive performances are off the chart.
Don’t even be an idiot and compare him with Antione Wright, who did nothing other than keeping his man in front of him.
He’s not even in the same league as far as stealing, rebounding, and blocking shots.
TWill needs to get se up for his shots. TOday, nobody set him up, and that’s why he didn’t shoot well.

Maybe ya’ll should’ve watched the game instead of basing it off reports and the stats sheet.

What makes you think if T-Will makes 1 shot today that he will do well against EXPERIENCED NBA PLAYERS!
by Randy Oreens on Jul 6, 2009 8:55 PM EDT reply actions
Because he’ll be playing alongside Harris who sets him up, and Lopez who draws defense into him.
Look at Brandan Rush’s shooting % today. He’s perfectly fine in NBA.
by biggie on Jul 6, 2009 9:00 PM EDT reply actions
CDR and TWill looked good. The thing I liked about TWill was his his ability to defend on the perimeter. RJ was known as a great defensive player when he came in the league and he became a good scorer. TWill’s ability to defend should keep him on the court and his ability to pass (which also looked good) should be his priority on offense. CDR is just a winner. It’s early but it’s a nice start. Psycho-T looked good and the Nets are going to regret not taking him. He might be next years Lopez.
by libigman on Jul 6, 2009 9:06 PM EDT reply actions
People try to take too much away from these Summer League games. Some were calling Lopez a bust last year based on his summer league performace. Bayless was dominant, and then he had a crappy rookie year. Some struggle with their shot, only to shoot better in the regular season. Dont get your panties in a bunch cause TWill shot 1 for 8. He will improve. Hes got all the other skills at his disposal, which means he will be fine.
by Chris2 on Jul 6, 2009 9:21 PM EDT reply actions
THANK YOU, Chris.
T-Will has WAY better handles than antoine or rj did, and he hit his only shot off the dribble.
So I guess he’ll miss all of his spot-up shots the whole year, and only hit off the dribble…
He also see’s the court better than anyone on the floor in Summer league, including the point guards.
He also rebounds more aggressively than ’tione or rj.
just chill out….

devin is going to love playing with twill…anyone who moves well without the ball is going to love playing with twill cuz he’ll find you.
by Andy on Jul 6, 2009 10:04 PM EDT reply actions
Who cares if Williams shot 1 for 8
This kid has the making of a “glue guy” written all over him. We NEED a guy that can defend the perimeter, and do the little things. T Will looks like someone that can make OTHER PLAYERS better. On a team where Devin Harris appears to be incapable of a doing, this is a blessing.
by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 6, 2009 10:05 PM EDT reply actions
The writing is on the wall for S-Will. They didn’t ask him to play because they’re going to get rid of him

Williams had a solid game excluding his scoring. he has to b able to score or he won’t b able to succeed in this league.

I was impressed by t-will and cdr. I don’t like the teams being mixed because you could see they weren’t really playing together. Speights and CDR shot every chance they got.
For the people that think they can tell whether someone is going to be a bust based on one summer league game says more about YOUR ability to understand basketball rather than the players ability to play. These guys have praticed a few times and have no cohesion, yet people think they can tell something about what kind of pro they’ll be? I always say you’ll never hear anyone say how knowledgeable Nets fans are and some of the posters on this site prove it everyday…

guys this is a summer league!
adam ‘crybaby’ morrison had a torrid summer league games and everybody was saying he’d be an allstar for years to come.
look where he is now.
i hate the pikers – which system are they running? sixers’ or nets’? 50/50?
did you see j-rue hoisting it up everytime he touched the ball? and he’s supposed to be a pg of the future? do they learn anything valueable by doing half&half nets/sixers?
