Yi Scores 30 in FIBA Asia Warm-Up

Yi Jianlian, in his first game back with Team China, scored 30 points in an exhibition game win over a team of All-Stars from Australia's National Basketball League. China won handily, 87-67, building a lead early then extending it with good defense. It was Yi's highest scoring game ever for the Chinese national team and game video showed him attacking the basket repeatedly. The two teams play again Thursday.

No way they’re trading him – not without seeing him play this season first. If they can give Simmons or Alston or something for BBD, then maybe. But not Yi.

I truly hope Yi gets better because he is a 7 footer with great versatility – he could be a dirk-like player one day. who knows.

Yi?? attacking the basket constantly??

OMG.

Keep it up Yi, lets hope this intensity and aggressiveness translates to the NBA court in october

As a Netfan: Good for him, thats a lot of points, hopefully he’s improving. If he did that this season I’d be driving his bandwagon.

As a Realist: He scored 30 on the China team against Australia. What NBA players did he bang against? How is this different from any summer league game?

by Trenton on Jul 28, 2009 10:42 AM EDT reply actions

at least we know that he’ll attack the basket when he sees andrew bogut in there…

All Yi needs is time and a chance to play.
Right now, the nets have the potential to have three more future all-stars along with Devin Harris.
1. Devin Harris (No Doubt) All Star
2. Brooke Lopez Future All Star
3. Courtney Lee Future All Star
4. Yi Jianlian Good Possibility of being a future All Star

Dang, if you watch that video… Dirk never played that aggressive!

I know it was only against Australia but that is very nice to see. Very ferocious.

Saw some in game pictures of Yi just taking free throws, and all I have to say is HOLY CHRIST! He is insanely jacked now, and looks nothing like he was this past year…Great to see his work ethic take fruition and him living up to his words to hulk up this offseason. With Yao out for the season, Yi WILL be playing @ the ASG, and if he’s anything near star level, I’ll be banging my head across the wall for what a complete waste this past season was. Wish Carter could have stayed to rise alongside Yi to the level of international super stardom like TMac did :(

by NateDD on Jul 28, 2009 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

Its a start! Regardless of this performance, I don’t think we should let Yi go for Davis. Yi was a top 10 pick for a reason; because his upside is great. Even though Baby is really good, developing Yi’s skill set is a bit more difficult, so we need to give him a bit more time. If we could get Baby w/o giving up Yi, I’d definitely do it.

by brian on Jul 28, 2009 11:09 AM EDT reply actions

Baby steps.

All I am hoping for.

Lets see how well he does from here.

by VC3FAN on Jul 28, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

Last year we did better when Yi was on the bench, we actually came back. But he was played because of marketing purposes. I think he will be improving this year and in the future be chinas best player.

by Randy Oreens on Jul 28, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions

Just saw the vid. Yi looked beastly—-his body language looks much different; sure its the Aussie’s but if Yi can build up his confidence (which is his biggest problem IMO), he’ll be golden.

by brian on Jul 28, 2009 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

It’s these kind of performances that make his clunkers in the NBA so maddening… I really hope he can find his consistency – he is obviously talented!

Yi will do well next season. I expect a 15ppg+7rpg season from him.

Send yi to tornto

by jirohkanzaki on Jul 28, 2009 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

This is just one game so Ima take this with caution however this is excellent news in the past China games he looked just as bad as he did last season as a Net.
If he can develop into a solid scorer next season might be a lot better than what we think.

by Adam.y on Jul 28, 2009 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

I will not throw cold water on the postives of this news There are some not-so-positives as well, as pointed out by djheavyduty above (i.e. 3 rebounds?). Yi will play for the Nets this year, and you have to hope to see good things. There will probably always be holes in his game but he could improve. We;ll have to see.

I didn’t see the vid. Saw some photos. I got a chuckle at looking the Aussie “players”. They look like dudes you’d see like painting your house or something. Yi looks like a beast next to those wimps. He does look more ripped (doesn’t mean too too much IMO – but its OK). I’m glad he did well – because he definitely is supposed to. So it’s good. Keep it up.

When he plays against NBA PFs and the elbows are aflying courtesy of Maxiell and the like, and the big NBA arses are boxing out hard courtesy of Craig Smith and the like, and Garnett is in his facing screaming and howling him down, we’ll see what happens then. That is the only and true test from my perspective as an NBA fan.

Yi will have to respond by putting his mark on the game, which won’t be with screaming and histrionics (which wouldn’t hurt LOL), but he has to be hard-nosed and aggressive because he has talent on O. Like a PF version of agressive Argies (my country) like Ginobli (reckess abandon), or Nocioni (a little dirty though), and yes even like Dirk who is a guy you can knock around (and mess up his hair), but he is agressive on O – but he is also supremely talented and confident as a shooter. I think Yi’s game is a little different – more of a runner/jumper to go along with shooting (not as good as Dirk). I hope he pays dividends on the court.

by Rocket Scientist on Jul 28, 2009 12:21 PM EDT reply actions

Thirty points is 30 points. These are the same international teams that give U.S. NBA and College teams a hard time the last few years. If Yi is really only 21 years old you would b a fool to trade him now!

by Mike on Jul 28, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions

hey i would b happy to see a 12pts with 7reb a game nxt season. those numbers dnt stand out but they are improved numbers

by tu vieja on Jul 28, 2009 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

Rocket Scientist,

You need to watch the video. The guy playing in that game is not the timid, scared Yi from last season.

That guy playing looked like a damn power forward. Those post moves and that fierceness/aggressiveness when attacking the rim had me stunned.

by Mr. Dollar Bills on Jul 28, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

I am not a Yi fan. I never have been. But I would LOVE to see him develop into the player that people keep thinking he will become. That would be huge for the Nets. Even if Yi can only be a 25 minute a night player who is going to average like 10-5, thats not horrible production. And pairing Glen Davis for those other 20 minutes or so a night would make a lot of sense.

I still think that Rod and Kiki are doing a very good job building this team – and have a great young core to build around (DH, Lee, CDR, TWill, Lopez). If Yi or Swat would develop into a legit player – this team would be in very good position for the 2010-2011 season – regardless of how the draft turns out.

by Ryan243 on Jul 28, 2009 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

The funny thing though – is that all these Glen Davis rumors should be irrelevant – as the Nets had the perfect opportunity to buy a pick or trade into the top of the second round and take Blair. That was a no brainer. I was convinced they would make noise – by not only going after Blair but going after Jodie Meeks. Had they gotten Blair – they woudl have gotten a rebounding version of Davis at the price of 750k per year rather than 5m. All seems so simple now……

by Ryan243 on Jul 28, 2009 1:06 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly im happy to see and hear that Yi has more confidence in his game. Also if Yi can truly develop into the player he can be this year, we most certiantly wont be the WORST team in the league and perhaps might have a shot at making the playoffs (yea thats wishful and unrealistic thinking I admit, but we have no where to go but up)

Anyway, I just hope Yi brings this kind of intensity to the NBA

by Matt on Jul 28, 2009 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

They didn’t want Blair and alot of teams didn’t want him. It must of been more then just his knees.

by Mike on Jul 28, 2009 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

Let’s hope Yi can keep it up. I’ll gladly eat my words if he turns into a contributing factor this season.

by NJ4Life on Jul 28, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

Atleast Yi is driving to the rim! That was impressive he did a nice finger roll and those 2 blocks were sweet. 30 points is a lot better then he did last year in the China games. Also his shot looks a lot better and he is a lot more ripped then last year idk what you people are talking about.

by ben on Jul 28, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

After viewing video of the game I believe that was Yee Jianlian, Yi’s evil twin brother.

by Mike on Jul 28, 2009 1:21 PM EDT reply actions

@Ryan

I don’t think we’ll ever see Thorn take a player with suspect knees again. Not after they (successfully) predicted Abdur-Rahim’s situation. It’s just not worth the risk.

DON’T GIVE UP YI. Hopefully, Thorn and company can find a way to get Davis without losing Yi.

We can have a front court rotation of Lopez, Yi, and Davis. Then, roles players in whoever is left in Josh Boone, Sean Williams, and Tony Battie.

Maybe they can trade Najera to the Celtics in exchange for Davis. If that is not enough, throw-in Alston into the deal.

by kuljo on Jul 28, 2009 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

@Ryan243
Exactly, there would really have been no risk in picking him and trading away the GS pick or maybe some cash for the 31st pick. Even if Blair had a 3 year career the Nets wouldnt have lost much if anything at all.

by TheMann on Jul 28, 2009 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

I thought only Celtic fans are dumb.

Why are we even entertaining the idea of Yi for Davis swap. Thorn is never going to do that unless Davis suddenly becomes Amare S. Forget about it.

by dennis on Jul 28, 2009 2:07 PM EDT reply actions

great to hear. we dont need to be an all-star, but we need to him to play in the paint and not be just a jump shooter. if he can play in the paint consistently and plays strong and tough we will be in great position

lets hope he plays well next game cause all of the positive feedback here can turn very negative if he puts up 11pts on poor shooting.

by xcalibur on Jul 28, 2009 2:43 PM EDT reply actions

Now everybody is jumping on the Yi bandwagon? What happened a month ago when everybody was saying that Yi should be traded in place of Ryan Anderson?

Did Ryan Anderson have a good summer league? Yes. But Anderson’s biggest competition was probably Tyler Hansurough. I’ve always been on the Yi bandwagon; I am not hesitant to criticize him when it is due, but I don’t demand to trade him after one year with the Nets. And I had an arguement previously with some people on this thread about Yi’s potential. Well folks, Yi has the POTENTIAL to put up similar numbers in the NBA if he continues to progress. Ryan Anderson will never put these numbers up. I’m not saying that Ryan Anderson is gonna be a bad player, he is an ideal role player that will make an impact off the bench and fits in nicely with the Magic. But to compare him with Yi and claim that Anderson is better is ludicrous.

by Jason on Jul 28, 2009 2:59 PM EDT reply actions

Yes not making a move for that 2nd rounder to pick up Blair was foolish. I would rather have Blair than Davis – as the 3 year salary differential would be huge. And we needed/need a beast in the paint to crash the boards – especially when the 2nd unit is in and Lopez is on the bench.

I am in favor of making a move for Davis – only if it does not include any draft picks, young players or Yi. If we could move Najera for Davis it would be a steal. Not sure I would necessarily include Alston though – as I think he will have more value at the deadline when teams are desperate for a PG to make a push for the playoffs. A playoff team might even agree to swapping a 1st rounder for Alston at that point – expiring contract and veteran PG who can start for a playoff team. There is a lot of value there. Dooling has less value than Alston in trade.

by Ryan243 on Jul 28, 2009 3:01 PM EDT reply actions

How are people predicting he will get 15ppg and 7rpg? You are all just hoping. Your belief is not fact and thus is the reason why haters still exist. I’d trade the guy in a heartbeat for any other PF, just because it can’t be any worse than what we had last year.

In my opinion he is still a bust in the NBA.

Its good to see this from him, but its nothing to hang your hat on.

by Trenton on Jul 28, 2009 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

Can’t do KG for Yi. KG is injured and Thorn won’t take the risk. Now KG has a bad contract. LOL

Did anyone notice the lack of rebounding? We need someone to rebound. 3 rebounds???? Come on. I caution anyone to see anything here that can be translated to the NBA – this was Australia….

by Chris Paul on Jul 28, 2009 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

Okay, finally got a chance to view the video. I was slack-jawed.

I agree with Mike…this is Yee Jianlian, Yi Jianlian’s evil twin.

It was against a bunch of Aussie All-Stars and he is likely to face only one NBA center in the Asia Games, the Grizzlies third stringer Hamed Ehadadi of Iran. But last year in this very exhibition series, Australian commentators slammed Yi for not being aggressive. Can’t think they feel the same way today.

by Net Income on Jul 28, 2009 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

good for yi…he now just needs to keep this up.

whoever the nets are going to get to back up yi has to be given just a 1 year contract with a team option. Come thorn gets us diogu or warrick!

by Andy on Jul 28, 2009 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

Nets need assets to sell the team to new fans in Brooklyn and/or new owners. The #3 personality in China the biggest NBA market is not leaving the team.

A player like Davis is available every year. Why overpay now when you are set on a rebuilding project and trying to save dollars for cap space and to improve the chances of selling the team. Davis will not add enough wins to make a difference, enough fans to impact the bottom line or enough wow factor to attract the interested of future free agents.

by Jay on Jul 28, 2009 4:54 PM EDT reply actions

Jason, come on. Take it easy with criticizing people for being happy about the fact that Yi had a good day. If they want to jump on the bandwagon, let them. Yi is on the Nets, if he does well, Nets do well. Simple equation. So if he does well, you’ll see people jump on this bandwagon that you seem to claim for yourself but all they are doing is rooting for the Nets. Hooray for you if you turn out to be right about Yi. Most people only care if the Nets do well, Yi or no Yi. Know what I’m sayin?

Just watched the video. He definitely is much more aggressive than he was at any point last season. And he definitely put on some muscle. Its a shame he has to play in these China games – I would like to see him work on putting on another 5-10 pounds of muscle. The problem is will he be able to keep that muscle over the course of the season??? The Nets better put him on a heavy lifting regime once he is back in the States and carry it thru the season. He is still too small to bang down low – but his increased strenth will help him drive to the basket. Overall impressive video though – regardless of the competition.

I dream of YI being an 18 and 8 guy, and spreading the defense for Devin, Lee and TWILL. I started with a personal trainer today. She is a 25 year old Brazilian, who is as hard bodied as a woman can get and still be beautiful. I dream of sticking with this program for the next year, and then at the end of the year, “FABIOLA” professes her love for me, and we ride off in my Porsche. hey guys, I’m from Canton where Yi played his CBA games in China 3 years back.

Watched the game last night. So surprised to see Yi change so much – the strength of his body and this aggressive play at low post.

believe he’s going to make some difference. Honestly, if Nets fans don’t like him at all, most of his Chinese fans would like to see him move to Boston.

Ya know.. it’s things like this that at least make me respect the fact Yi is trying.

Last season he showed up with a 3 point shot, after making next to none in Milwuakee. This season he’s showing up with some serious muscle. If he keeps it up, who knows what we’ll have if and when we move to Brooklyn…the strength of Dwight Howard, the shooting of Dirk Nowitski, the post moves of Pau Gasol, the passing of Magic Johnson, and the ferocity of Kevin Garnett?!?! Ok.. maybe I’m getting a little carried away.
