Kiki, KMart and the Future of the Nets

Kiki Vandeweghe spoke with Ben Couch of the Nets the other day about his tenure as Nuggets GM. He argued that he had to make tough decisions back then, just as he and Rod Thorn are doing now. He noted that Denver had gone from 17 wins to 43 and how the franchise has been one of the winningest since. We look at his record in Denver; his biggest mistake, Kenyon Martin; and what it might mean for the Nets.

I stopped being a KMArt fan when he left NJ
not because he left
but he was being greedy
He will never duplicate those last 2 years he was in NJ

I still occasionally look back via youtube… if you haven’t you should.

That team was what got me loving the Nets. Oops of glass, monster blocks, non stop fast break. OMG.

Yeah; they looked awesome until the rest of the league started to take them seriously. Good defense will always stop the circus run and gun, off the glass dunks, Harlem Globe Trotter style of play.

@ Mike

When exactly did the league start to take them seriously? Was it after the first Eastern Conference Championship or the second Championship? Or maybe it was after BScott was fired and LFrank took over?

Guys I cant believe you think the Nets were good in 02/03!
Who was in the EAST?
The Nets were good in the East because of how weak the division was thats why we got killed in the finals. There was no Bosh, Lebron, Wade, Dwight ex.
If that same Team was in the NBA currently I can see us making 7th or 8th place in the division.

I loved the run and gun Nets of the early 90’s. They played solid defense, rebounded well, and got out on the fast break as well as anybody since the Lakers of the 80’s. Yet, the half court offense was abysmal. Furthermore, those Eastern Conference Champ teams would finish no higher than 4th in the current Eastern Conference, and maybe even lower…..We were VERY fortunate that the Eastern Conference was HORRIBLE at that time.

Oops…I meant early 00’s, not 90’s….

Ha, so they stunk in y’alls opinion? When were we good? Ever?

Yeah K-Mart is overpaid but at that time money was around. Yeah Kiki was fleeced by Thorn so what’s new. I don’t remember K-Mart being hurt at the time of the negotiation. That cap hell really hurt Denver last year as opposed to the flexibility we have this year which is going to lead us to the finals, right? The point is if you have a guy that can get you to where you want to go then you pay him but getting the guy is the priority. Sure he got injured but that’s always a risk but look where they are now as compared to us. So we are left with the story that Kiki only went after K-Mart cuz he had money and K-Mart was the only one left. It’s funny in that even though Kiki didn’t know what he got, ended up getting fired cuz K-Mart got injured and couldn’t earn the money (also went at it with his coach, I believe) but if K-Mart was never injured and Denver won like last year, Kiki would be a genius.

KMart has another 2 seasons on his contract. I wouldnt be surprised if he comes back to the Nets when his contract is up.

K-Mart was a jerk and probably still is.

@ Randy and Leo,

You can’t possibly say how good (or bad in your cases) those Nets would have been today. As in any time period, a team can only play the teams on the schedule. You may as well say, “The Bulls only won because…..”, or “The lakers only won because….”.

Furthermore, the Nets were NEVER favored to win the east in neither one of those seasons (but they were favored that third year). Since they happened to win, I guess you guys came to the conclusion that they weren’t good, everyone else was bad.

Bottom line, teams can only play the games on their schedule. Your statements are really speculative and no where near factual.

@ Eugene
My reasoning that we would finish no higher than 4th is based on the fact that each of the years we made the finals we got disposed of fairly easily in the finals. Each of those years our opponent(Lakers and Spurs) had VERY difficult roads to even get to the finals, with the Lakers needing a miracle to beat the Kings in game 7. If we had been in the West during those years, we would have been a middle of the pack playoff team, just as I think that team would now fare in today’s Eastern Conference. I agree that it is speculation, but I still contend we were lucky that the Eastern Conference was as weak as it was.

I guess no one read the link. Not surprising…just more KMart drivel. Same ol, same ol. He wanted out…he got his wish. And why in God’s name would the Nets want to bring him back at 35 years old.
