Is Gooden on Nets' Radar?

A lot of the usual suspects have signed: Sean May (Kings); Chris Wilcox (Pistons); Channing Frye (Suns). Glen "Big Baby" Davis may be too rich for the Nets' taste. So Drew Gooden's name has started to pop up...in beat writers' blogs and now on HoopsWorld. The 6'10" power forward finished last season with the Spurs and although he has jumped around the NBA--six teams in seven years--he is a career 12-and-8.

Please no Gooden! Get Boozer, make this a professional basketball team again please!

I thought Dwight Gooden retired years ago. Here is another example of getting someone elses damaged goods. 6 teams in 7 years, ouch…

You mean Drew Gooden and we’re betting off getting Boozer than him even if the price is steeper. Nets prob wont get him either though, 1million for 5 years would be too much for them at this point lol.

He used to hurt the nets when he was on the cavs.
I’d take him, but not for a lot, but he is better than what we’re puttin out on the court if the season started tomorrow.

Damaged goods? Why do you say that?
From my recollection of DGooden. Solid player. Would make a good compliment to BLopez. He rebounds and has a decent offensive game. Don’t know why he’s moved around so much. Maybe someone can provide some insight?
There might be something to him becuase San Antonio didn’t even make an attempt to resign him. And they’re starving for frontcourt help.

Hey; Jason “Son of Opie” Collins is a unrestricted free agent. Maybe all this talk about Boozer, Big Baby etc. is just a smoke screen. Seriously, How come there is no mention of David Lee in regards to the Nets? I know he is asking alot but would he be a good fit?
by Mike on Jul 23, 2009 2:47 PM EDT reply actions
He reminds me of Jim Jackson.
Tons of talent coming out of college, was who he was, was dumped from team to team and still put up those same 12 and 8 he always did.
It was like teams were expecting him to breakout and be a 20 and 10 guy.
He played great in Cleveland and Chicago and got little run in San Antonio but still.
Would not mind him wearing a Nets uniform. Better than YI was last year.

He would fit in the strategy from last summer of mixing in some solid veterans with the young players(e.g. Dooling, Hayes, Simmons, Najera). Of course that strategy was a mixed bag, but we do need another PF to go with Yi and Najera and he may be about as good as its going to get this offseason for us. Would probably mean Josh Boone’s days are numbered…my guess he’s the guy to get traded to clear up a roster spot… a la Marcus Williams last summer.
by Moose Barker on Jul 23, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions
YES PLEASE. I LOVE this guy. He would be solid and his production has always been diminished because he’s always been on teams with better options. Here (with Harris as basically our only proven scoring option) I think his numbers would lift somewhat. He’d be a great compliment to Lopez.
by Alex on Jul 23, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions
Uhhh..no thanks. I’m not a fan of this guy, just like Wilcox and Ely and some of the other bums that have been mentioned. Boozer is a winning player and I believe Big Baby is a winning bench player. I disgree with the author of one of those articles. I don’t think Gooden contributes to winning, not that the Nets are interested in that this year anyway. I would rather have Yi and Swat stink up the joint with Najera cleaning up in their own special ways and lose gamnes (which is a certianty with that crew)than have a apathetic to winning player like Gooden. Just IMO.

Two guys I haven’t heard nary a peep about -
Shelden Williams
Chris Mihm
I would take either one on a Jarvis Hayes type contract – 1 yr with team option for year 2. Mihm has been productive for good teams. Williams can be a good rebounder and may still improve. Or would do Leon Powe for an investment in the future. If Nets liked Psycho T’s toughness and work ethic, they would like Powe.

Drew Gooden has Nets written all over him. He’s been moved around and underappreciated his entire career and he’s an underdog. He would fit in nicely with the team we have here and put forth a whole bunch of effort. Ain’t nothing wrong with that. OH! -and he’s got a sick beard!
While messing around with the depth chart, looking at where Gooden would fit in and who he would be playing with, I come to the conclusion that 2 players out of Keyon Dooling, Jarvis Hayes & Bobby Simmons need to go to clear space for CDR and T-Will to get some minutes. I’m just saying, if we’re going to rebuild and let the kids play, let’s really let the kids play. I would obviously prefer we keep Dooling, we find somewhere to send Hayes and Simmons and give CDR and T-will time at the 3.
by Dirt on Jul 23, 2009 4:46 PM EDT reply actions
Just recently Gooden was lumped in with a bunch of other players the Nets probably aren’t going to get, because they like their core the way it is.

I guess we’re going to get a steady trickle of these “Nets Interested?” for each player we don’t plan to acquire.

Re: My above post…Heck man, sign Gooden and THEN trade Simmons, Hayes, Dooling, Boone & S. Williams for T-Mac, and have CDR and T-WIll come off the bench at the 2 & 3. But again, I digress. My apologies.
by Dirt on Jul 23, 2009 4:55 PM EDT reply actions
Dirt:
it woudl be nice, but do you think CDR and hang physically at the 3? I know he’s got some height, but he seems weak to me. I really think he is a 2, and will back up Lee if Alston gets moved later (to get something better than Gooden?) and Dooling goes back to back up PG. Who knows.
TWill is strong and is like a Ruben Paterson type of 3, but he may really be a big 2 also. I don’t know. Hayes has got a strong frame as well which helps him at the 3.
Along those lines,if you are a proponent of playing the kids like CDR and Twill instead of Hayes, which is understandable with the team moving and the ownership in limbo, why would you want to include Gooden in the mix. If the kids are playing, why wouldn’t you want Yi and Swat or even Boone to get the minutes at the 4? Not a fan of those fellas are ya? I guess Yi and Swat as kids do not equate to CDR and Twill as kids?. Does not playing Hayes and playing Gooden equate? Hmmm. question to ponder Nets fans…

Dirt your last post threw me after I reacted to your first one. My head is spinning. Sounds like you want to go ‘after it all’ of sudden and forget the play the kids plan. Which one is it? LOL jsut kiddin’ round.

I think the “Media” are using the same “Radar” the U.S. Navy used at Pearl Harbor in 1941.
by Mike on Jul 23, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions
at first yeah it sounds good to get him, but why? sign him to be a backup PF? i am not benching Yi to give money and PT to Gooden. yeah he is a nice player, but we dont need to win now. we are building up our talent and Yi needs to play.
even though gooden has been moved around he is a productive player. he is the type of player i think boone should have turned into right now. maybe not averaging 12pts, but something close to that. maybe 7-7 or so.
if we had the big 3 i’d like to have gooden, but we are in a different position. i don’t see the benefit of bringing him in. i mean if we can get him cheap and he doesnt mind being a bench player then fine. he has playoff experience and i think would play well with our guys, but if he is going to cost a nice chunk of money and years then pass

Agreed. This is all bunk

@Mike
there was nothing wrong with the radar at Pearl Harbor. It showed the Japanese aircraft approaching. The operators passed the word on, but the readings were dismissed as a glitch.
I see the relevance of the Nets “seeing” players on their “radar” but failing to get the bosses to understand the value of the data.
by Net Income on Jul 23, 2009 5:40 PM EDT reply actions
i dont mind him at all…ill take anyone over josh boone and swill as a backup big right now…plus, he’s SOLID! he was a great complementary player in pretty much every team he’s been..(someone we need)
BUT somewhere in the contract, it should read:
“In addition to this contract, Mr. Drew Gooden must give back the piece of hair on the back of his head to Mr. Rasheed Wallace and his bald spot.”
idk if i can stand looking at that all season…
by dennis on Jul 23, 2009 6:52 PM EDT reply actions
LOL dennis. Just for the record though: that spot on Rasheed’s head – it’s not a bald spot. Look closer. It’s a gray spot or ‘patch’ if you will. Unelss your talking about something else.

Wow, this is getting funny. How many scrubs can be thrown on this website for us to get. As usual this is another power forward that won’t be in a Nets uniform. I would totally pass on this guy anyway. There is a reason he has been on six teams in seven years. There is also a reason why one of the most respected franchises in the league in the Spurs have passed on re-signing this guy after half a season. Unless we go after Boozer (a legit player) or get Diogu on the cheap, we might as well stick with Yi and company. Saying this PAINS me greatly because as I have said on many occasions, it will be very hard to sit through another season with Yi as our starting PF!
by JustinNJ on Jul 23, 2009 7:50 PM EDT reply actions
@ Net Income; You are correct. The radar worked but the bosses back at the base thought it was a flight of B17’s that were due to arrive some time soon. I believe one of those bombers was nicknamed “Lebron James”.

boozer 20-10 owns gooden 12-8
but in terms of money gooden is more flexible….
but even if he ask for pennies i bet the Nets front office will say: ‘’we love our young core players’’
Translation: we cant pay a cent more right now even if that means getting a decent player to help us reach 20-62… besides Thorn and Ratner want more money to spend on expensive clothes, vacation trips, and so on. So, Sorry pal but better luck next time.
and then they`ll go to the media to say: We tried to get a deal but some internal factors from our part and a lack of comunication between us and gooden made imposible to reach an agrement.
Plz Nets im bored and tired of excuses, Thx God Carter was moved to Orlando wich is by the way my new favorite team, ill continue looking after the nets but only to see how far they can go with a load of front office.

Ratner getting more investors to move to Brooklyn.
But according to numerous officials throughout the organization, Ratner may soon find someone to help alleviate the team’s crushing debt load and facilitate the construction of the Atlantic Yards project, and the candidates range from the former CEO of Yahoo to a billionaire industrialist from Russia — each of whom would still move the team from New Jersey.
“I would be surprised if it doesn’t happen fairly soon,” said a high-ranking Nets official, who requested anonymity so as not to jeopardize Ratner’s plans. “Bruce has looked into several options. He’s had offers, he’s made counteroffers, and at some point in time — probably by the time the season gets under way — something will transpire.”

if we pik him up or not we can’t lose we only lose if we sign him 4 big bucks and long contract which sounds kinda dum

How can you guys get excited over Drew Goodens? There’s a reason he’s been bouncing around six different teams in the past 7 years. Signing him will only ruin our cap space, and our future. He’s isn’t what we need now.

@ Rocket Scientist…
The kids I really want to develop are CDR and T-Will. I think they could both get a heck of a lot of playing time as backups. I like picking up T-Mac and dumping half of our roster because it frees up roster space for them to get their chance. In fact, it leaves them little other options. CDR and T-Will getting their chance doesn’t mean they have to start.
The people I included within that trade are all people we wouldn’t resign come next season anyway. I’m pretty convinced that Josh Boone and Sean Williams are done here. Josh Boone doesn’t fit in on the court, Sean Williams doesn’t fit in off it, -and believe me I’m a huge fan of Sean Williams. I would however, be happy to see him go home to Houston and get a real chance to play.

Nope – not happening. Team is broke and unless and until there is someone with money – no free agents.
And as far as this Russian “Billionaire” goes – they better be careful. Kristic and Nachbar both got stiffed by Russian teams. These guys don’t do business like we do.
