How James Posey Didn't Become a Net

In August of 2007, James Posey was being pursued by the Nets and Celtics after being dissed by his old GM, Pat Riley. In a book about Boston's magical season, Peter May describes how Posey was ready to join the Nets: "I called my agent and told him to call New Jersey and tell them I was coming." Eddie House then called. So did Doc Rivers and they wouldn't let him say no to a Celtics offer. He wound up with a ring.

I’m sure this is Frank’s fault somehow, I just can’t figure out how.

This franchise is a joke

@Mr. DB,

The blatant putdowns like ‘This franchise is a joke’ is the kind of negativity many posters are tired of hearing. I enjoy reading different opinions on the state of the franchise, the Brooklyn move, how you feel about our chances in the future and our chances (or lack of a chance depending on your perspective) of landing an elite free agent. Its a different story with these types of putdowns, being a fan of a professional sports team should enable you to escape from some real life problems not be another reason to wallow in your sorrow. Please seperate communicating an unpopular opinion based on good reasoning and simply puting down the franchise for the sake of it.

It is interesting how Eddie House was involved in Posey’s recruiting. After House’s injury-plagued year here, we made only a flaccid effort to retain him and Boston signed him for just a bit more than we offered.

In retrospect, it was a bargain contract. Not only does he stay healthy and hit lots of threes off the bench, but he also helped steer a player, Posey, who would have been very useful to the enemy, where he was their x factor in a championship run. Woulda, shoulda, coulda.

I hear a “a league source” says that the Nets are now one of the teams interested in Glen Davis. I would LOVE that pickup.

Not much fun reading comments like this. Not much point posting them.

Posey is so valuable. Hard to go far without guys like that. Big Babe — get him if we can. Would readers prefer Davis or Boozer?

Posey= the new robert horry

by Netsfan2010 on Jul 21, 2009 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

Now Posey is stuck in New Orleans. I think what we have here in NJ is a far better core for the future than what they have on the Hornets. …and are they even built to win now? Not a chance. They’re treading water.

What Glen Davis did in the playoffs was no fluke. I think he is the real deal and has the ability to one day become an All-Star. Adding him would be a patient move in the model of what OKC is doing. He is the moose NJ needs.

by Dirt on Jul 21, 2009 10:22 AM EDT reply actions

I’m not sure it’s even close between the Nets and the Hornets right now. I’d rather have Chris Paul than both Brook and Devin, but I suppose when you factor in the salaries of everyone involved the Nets might be better positioned for the future.

I’d rather the Nets take a shot at Leon Powe. There’s a reason Powe was ahead of Davis on the depth chart until he was injured, and he’s a much better rebounder than Big Baby, which is what Rod Thorn wants most out of his moose. And selfishly as a Cal alum, it’d be nice to get another Cal player to replace the ones that we’ve been getting rid of – Kidd, Murray, Anderson. Though I suppose injury concerns might make the whole situation moot. If there’s legitimate reason to believe he won’t be able to play for a while it doesn’t make sense to cut a guaranteed contract to invest in a guy who’s going to just warm the bench and do rehab for a year.

It’s not right to cry over the past.

Thanks Chris2 for your comment. 100% agree.

Big Baby Davis is being severely over-rated, outside of Boston he wont be that good and he wasnt all that GREAT for them except a handful of games. Not to mention would he even keep his weight in check with L. Frank at the helm and not KG, Pierce, Allen and Doc Rivers? I would pass on him, no thanks.

by TheMann on Jul 21, 2009 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

If we had Posey in 05-06 we would have won the title.

by Kevin on Jul 21, 2009 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

If we were to get Big Baby, I would look into packaging Dooling and Boone or Hayes for Travis Outlaw or Hakim Warrick.

It would save some money and free up a roster spot. My hope is that during this season, Outlaw or Warrick, both young, versatile and fairly affordable role players, could gel with this young team and be willing to re-sign here again next year.

And I’m officially WAY ahead of myself.

The Glen Davis rumor is at Yahoo Sports. Personally, I’d love it especially if we move noncontributors like Najera and /or Sean to make room for him. A big body is what the Nets need at the 4. But it could be just his agent trying to stimulate someone else to make a move.

Lets complain about things that happened 2 seasons ago.

And yes, Glen Davis is overrated.

While we’re on the subject, the Nets had a chance to sign Elvis in ’77, but he died.

Eh, I have my opinion, you have yours. Deal with it, i’m just being honest with the state of affairs here and I’m not a sugar coater.

There is a reason why 90% of all capable FAs ended up in a contending team!!! New Jersey has been a good stepping stone for these veteran underachievers……….they came in here, played off Carter and Kidd for a season or two, and earned their good contracts elsewhere or went getting ring.
Mikki Moore? Eddie House? Boki?
Javis Hayes is next!

Face it! For players, this is a undersirable franchise!

The Nets are not going to acquire any quality forward that will step on Yi’s playing time. Why speculate on the impossible?
