Cost Cutting Shortens Nets Bench

When the Nets ownership decreed the team would have to lose one coaching position, the assistants banded together and decided to preserve everyone's job by taking pay cuts. Now, it looks like the Nets will lose head count anyway. Brian Hill appears ready to leave Lawrence Frank's side for the same job in Detroit and Roy Rogers, credited with Brook Lopez's rapid development, could be headed to Rutgers.

I know we’re in cost-cutting mode, but with a lot of younger players, we need good coaching.

Unless the Nets have been unhappy with Hill and Rodgers this seems wildly shortsighted. Young players need good coaching and steady relationships with the coaches. To have key members of the anchor staff coming and going is unsettling.
Perhaps there are replacements in the wings (hopefully) but if not this is rather pathetic.

The Nets must be really hurting financially if they can’t pay more than Rutgers for an assistant coach. Really, Really hurting. 2010? Forget it.

Boozer can coach?

by NetRick on Jul 19, 2009 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

Still don’t understand the cost-cutting. I would think that Rutgers pays under or close to 100k for their assistants considering they pay well below the Big East average salary for head coaches (they probably pay fred hill under 500k). Are the Nets saying that they can’t pay 100k for an NBA assistant? I take this as a really ominous sign for us in 2010. I think we can start seeing the cryptic nature of Thorn’s quotes about 2010 to mean that we aren’t doing jack.

I think this is more to do with long term guarantee than his annual salary. I think all coaches realized this is their last year with Frank. If they bring big free agents in 2010, they would make a coaching change too and with Frank, lesser known assistants also will be gone. I think Rogers is looking for financial security over one year salary.

The writing is on the wall, but on this website people are being crucified for daring to read it. Those of us who have read it aloud, are being called “negative” and are being bashed unfairly for being brutally honest about the Nets, the roster, and the financial situation.

“Oh, there’s no reason to be negative. Be positive! New Jersey fans suck!!! We’re going to get Lebron James in 2010!!”

Sure. Think happy thoughts, and you’ll be able to fly eh…well how about this my dear peter pans…I’ll be positive once this team does something more than cut costs frantically or bleed money out of every orifice. The one thing I am happy about is that we have some nice young talent. What happens from here on out is a crap shoot, and I’m not convinced the money will be available to spend on adding solid veteran talent to make this roster of kids formidable next season.

Excuse me while I cover my nose and mouth anytime Rod Thorn, Kiki, or any one of the “think happy thoughts” faction of Net fandom talk about what the Nets are going to do next season…nothing personal against you guys, but I just hate when people blow smoke in my face.

Mr. DB

Any suggestions on how an organization that is losing so much money could do to stop losing so much money? If you were in a meeting about the organization what would you suggest? You are right the writing is on the wall. It’s bleeding money big time. So what’s the answer? Sell the team won’t fix it. Move? Start fresh in a new city?

by supreme on Jul 19, 2009 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

We can’t keep cutting people out. If that is the case, Frank, Thorn, Kiki should take pay cuts or Ratner should sell the team.

Moving to Brooklyn obviously will solve all of the problems. I predict sell outs every night in Brooklyn.

Ratner is the worst!!!! How for pete’s sake is David Stern allowing this to happen??? The NBA looks totally minor league when this is allowed to transpire and this justifies why a good number of sports fans hate the NBA! This is utterly pathetic, we are a bigger laughingstock now than we ever were under “The Secaucus Seven” and THAT is saying something! Please real Nets fans: do not give this greedy pig any more of your hard earned money. Ratner must go!!!

Cut cut cut…… they have given up on making local fans happy!

by biggie on Jul 19, 2009 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

So many coaches do we have left? Is it going to be a Tom and Larry duo for the rest of the season after everyone else is axed? Maybe the ball boys will fill in.

by Netsfan on Jul 19, 2009 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

Now I don’t mean to be a broken record about Ratner, but this guy has to be one of the worst owners in sports. The only way this guy will be viewed as successful is if a decent arena is built in Brooklyn and the Nets land some major players. His cheapness is causing this organization to fall apart.

by Ray on Jul 19, 2009 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

We now have 2 NBDL teams to follow this season. One in Springfield and one in East Rutherford. Maybe we can get 40 wins between them.

by Isaac on Jul 19, 2009 8:56 PM EDT reply actions

Oh man, the guy that single-handedly developed Brook Lopez doesnt feel secure? He should be able to land a job with ANY NBA team after Brook’s development…why would he go to a college team??

05~08:

2010:
Harris
Wade
James

They are all jumping ship. It doesn’t give me any confidence in the short term future of the NETS. AND there won’t be any free agent signings for any of the trade exceptions. AND since the butcher’s union rates are so high, they hired a couple of circumcision Rabbis to make the IZOD center hot dogs shorter, to save money. CHOP CHOP CHOP…Everybody in the eastern conference is going to get better this off season. I am thinking we get a better draft pick than number 11 next year…

by Paul Erstein on Jul 19, 2009 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

AND Brian Hill is a really strong, experienced coach. He’s been a head coach in this league. I wonder why he hasn’t been offered head coaching jobs? I’d rather have him coaching in Minnesota, instead of either rookie candidates and I am a big big Mark Jackson fan, but he has NEVER been a coach, on ANY level. Maybe Hill likes being second banana? AND with Detroit reloaded, they could reach the second round of the finals. Loosing him puts more pressure on LFRANK who already puts enormous pressure on himself. AND he has no contract for after this season. AND he works pretty cheap. But I would work cheaper, and I was a winning coach in Jewish Center League in Brooklyn in the 1970s…

I got a novel idea to make money. Put a winner on the floor and move asap.

They will NOT sell out in Brooklyn. Ratner must sell and move the team to Newark with the Devils.
