Another Poor Effort Ends Turnpikers' Misery

The combined Sixer-Nets' summer league team finished without a win, losing Friday to the Celtics, 92-79. Playing their fifth game in five days, the Turnpikers shot poorly from deep (15.4%) and at the line (55%), turned the ball over, and in general didn't show much effort. Chris Douglas Roberts played well, scoring 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting while handing out four assists without a turnover. Terrence Williams, meanwhile, couldn't match his recent success, hitting on three of 11 shots. Once again, he turned the ball over, finishing with six. He did grab six rebounds and hand out four assists. Net invitee Chris Johnson of LSU had his best game, with 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes.

3 FOR 11!!!
He turned over the ball again, Frank really needs to work with Twill on controling the ball and not turning it over. Taking so many shots and turning the ball over a lot is what I think is making our team lose. How can people say he is not full of flaws? Please dont give me the Twill did great today…Twill has become very dissapointing and this is Summer League.

meh. playing with random players from some other team, what player would even care? Nets/Sixers mixup versus a team of players that will actually play together. this is just serving to keep them active until the season starts. It can’t really be doing much more than that for anyone.

I wanted Psycho T. Nets thought they needed a swingman, said they had him ranked in top five. I have not been impressed but it’s summer league. Nets dont have a shooting coach. Of course, they dont like pure shooters either.

Okay, it’s just summer league. Terrence did well in OTHER areas. He’s not a good jumpshooter yet, has never been one. I think he’ll be better with better players around him.
by Vinsanity on Jul 10, 2009 3:13 PM EDT reply actions
Randy he won’t come anywhere nar 25 minutes running the point. And when you play with better players who know where to be and how to finish those numbers go down.
The only number that matters in SL is how many boxes you fill.
T-Will has to improve in every single area, but he has also show the ability to shoot inside, range, rebound, dribble, steal, block, and play on-ball defense. And turn the ball over, but as a wing, I’ll take it…

Did anyone actually see this game? TWill went 2 for 6 from three point range which is decent. So he went 1 for 5 from inside the arc. Are his misses a product of not being able to finish at the rim, or is he missing pull up J’s?
To me, the biggest TWIll conern, and I said this before we drafted him, is that free throw percentage. I don’t want to see any hack a TWill situations crop up which would influence our ability to play him when the other team is over the limit.

When you have two mixed squads of non nba and rookie players turnovers are expected. This means absolutely nothing, and the whole thing was a pathetic idea.

Williams has played what? 3 games in the summer league? Take it easy.
Good game from CDR.

T-Will truly seems best suited as a starter on this team. I can’t wait to see him feed Brook for dunks, and make second passes out for Yi 3’s, much less finally having someone who will try to guard LB and PP without worrying about how it affects their offense….

Meanwhile, Orlando just signed Brandon Bass for 4 yrs/18mil
Unbelievable. Meanwhile, we have to pray that Ratner will be willing to pay someone the league minimum

These games are less than meaningless…I wouldn’t worry. It’s good that some young guys get some extra experience. CDR is working his butt of this off season and I’m sure he will be much improved next season.

I can’t lie. I was let down with T-Will in this summer league. My hopes for him were that he could at LEAST get out, run, throw down some big dunks and show off his killer athleticism.
However, he couldn’t really flourish in this lineup, league or situation. I don’t even see what good came out of him being in this summer league. The Net’s should have omitted it completely from their off-season.
On this mixed team there was no defense, no team concept, no ball movement and no sharing of the basketball whatsoever. Unfortunately, those are the facets of basketball Williams’ game is predicated on, and what could make him a very good NBA player.
The games we’ve seen him play in are NOT NBA games. They’re not even college, or any Euro-league out there. They are selfish, street leagues and really do nothing for a rookies game.

Speights has underachieved this entire week. He has a ton of talent. For him to get 3 measely rebounds is absurd.

I blame the 76ers. They lost 4 times to the nets last season and they just can’t win when their on the court with the nets. They brought us down. LOL

Nets Income I agree, I guess great minds think alike. Psycho T is doing AMAZING in Summer league no flaws what so ever. Guys if we keep cheering for players like this the coaches will think they are good and keep playing them and we wont get anywhere. We have to be vocal if a player is doing bad we have to show the coaches that they are doing bad.
by Randy Oreens on Jul 10, 2009 3:21 PM EDT reply actions
There is no need to knock other Nets players in your zealous support of Terrance. We won’t know anything about our current roster of players until we actually see them play. When are the preseason games anyway? I think the Nets will be better than many people are speculating (due in large part to some of our returning players).
by Jeff on Jul 10, 2009 3:23 PM EDT reply actions
@Jeff
Preseason starts October 4 in Albany, NY…unless the Nets get invited to the NBA China Games. Teams have yet to be announced. Last year, the NBA sent a Yi-less Milwaukee to Beijing and there was little interest. So I expect either the Nets or the Lakers (with Sun Yue, Kobe and a championship trophy) to head over.

You give players credit when it’s due.
TWill did not play well today. Overall, I’d still say he showed in the summer league 70% of what we expected of him.
He is a role player, and I am certain Harris will create shots for him that you don’t see in the summer league.
At the end, he is still by far the best wing defender in this draft. As that player, he’ll compliment a core of Harris, Lee, and Lopez really well.

totally agree, Chris. based on what I saw, that could be an issue.
T-Will took a lot of “experimental” shots off the dribble, kind of testing his own potential, I think because he knows he will soon lose the chance to take those shots. His three’s that went in were knock-down. The one’s that weren’t….ummm……weren’t…

Randy I thought you were crazy yesterday…i have to be honest.
But, maybe you’re not far off as i thought…twill sucked today there is just no better way to put it. Turnovers and horrible shots…my gosh. He did come out of college as a senior who knows how much he can improve…until he proves me other wise i think he sucks…i think overall he played HORRIBLY in the summer league. what a let down.
by Andy on Jul 10, 2009 4:28 PM EDT reply actions
Randy…you are quite the whiner…i gotta say. I don’t mind you vocalizing your criticisms of Twill’s game but you just blow things out of proportion all the time. You’re clearly biased. I’ve read your posts for the past few days and you just seem like you’re pissed at the world. Seriously chill out. Most of the time your post dont make any sense.
Being that mad prolly aint good for your health. This is summer league man. I myself have not been the happiest with Twill’s play but at the same time he has shown what has been expected of him. The kid is a team player who wants to helps his teammates produce. Helping players produce is kind of hard though when the team your playing with really aint a team and your teammates aren’t that good.
He has shown the versatility that we expected from him. He can rebound, he has nice court vision, he blocks, he steals, plays real nice D—-what we expected. We expected him to shoot poorly—-he can work on it.
I think his play will shine much more when he’s playing as part of a true team—not the “Disease” or the “Turnpikers” or the “SwineFlu” or whatever these announcers called them. This Nets/Sixers combined team was an awful idea. No team play…just a lot of selfishness.
Randy please relax. And Nets fans please try NOT to feed whatever high he gets from seeing us get worked up and arguing against his often senseless posts and arguments.

Well thank you Njquestcat and Andy, I know sometimes thats the way I put things in the wrong kind of way. Its just that its summer league and its our rookies playing against other rookies. How well do you think Twill will play against these superstars, I along with everyone on here want the Nets to win and go further. I am pissed at the world when “we” pay our hard earned money and spend our time watching the Nets only to see them not improving at all. I am going to be very vocal when it comes to 1st round picks because we expect a lot out of them.
by Randy Oreens on Jul 10, 2009 5:15 PM EDT reply actions
Its summer league. Hold off criticism until game 41 of the regular season is over.
Randy – I bet you a beer that TWill leads all rookies in triple doubles.
And you guys better pray that Brooklyn happens. I don’t think this team is going to get sold to stay in NJ and if Brooklyn isn’t happening, this will just be a lame duck franchise for the next 5 years until this recession is over. It will be a huge waste of our young core – and once guys are able to get out of NJ, they will bolt.

Grant Hill staying with the Suns. Him coming to the Knick would have actually given me a reason to watch some of their games, now, not so much. I am glad summer league is over. I am so spoiled by the excellent coverage ABC/ESPN and Yes give the NBA games, that watching the video stream and listening to two IDIOTs made me mad. M A D MAD. Hopefully, our coaching staff will be coaching TWILL and CDR for the rest of the summer time. They should be in the gym shooting, day and night. No sleep, no food, just shooting midrange jump shots. We have enough people to shoot the threes. CDR AND TWILL have got to be able to knock down open jumpers, or they can not be on the court. AND TWILL also needs to work on his free throws. BY next week, the second tier free agents will start to move around. I hope we get another power forward in a 2 for one, or three for one. I will provide anyone who will take Sean or Boone with a $25 gift certificate to Nathan’s. Heard the Chinese will be “YI-KNAPPING” YI for the rest of the summer. Too bad. He should be in the gym and weight room. He should be practicing fighting for position under the boards with Najera, not touring rural China, telling kids to stay in school and listen to their parents.

I just hope Twill doesnt get selfish on the court because so far his indictment has been taking to many shots in one game. If your off your off deal with it!
by Randy Oreens on Jul 10, 2009 6:37 PM EDT reply actions
I only saw 10 minutes and I noticed this: there were three breaks or running chances with Jrue Holiday with the ball and he completely ignored his wings ahead of him – twice it was Twill, so I never got to see what he could do in the open (I did see that Jrue is blind or selfish); the other thing is that Twill is really good at setting players up with passes. He is not fast like Harris, but he is fundamental and smart. He’d be a good point forward.
But, let’s not get crazy. We have lots of wings and this kid will only get 5 – 10 minutes a night. Harris, Lee, Hayes, Alston, Dooling, Simmons, and then CDR and then Twill. I don’t see many minutes.

The combination was a disaster. Nets players (and invitees) passed to each other and Sixer players (and invitees) passed to each other.
Speights and CDR dominated the ball and took every shot they could in the first two games. Holiday and TWill were trying too hard to impress rather than just play.
I think Chris Johnson may get a camp invite.

Hey, Steph Curry 4/14 in his first summer league game, as a SHOOTER!
RANDY: DO your thing and rip him apart!
by biggie on Jul 11, 2009 1:10 AM EDT reply actions
Well Biggie you know I have said this a number of times to people that I think Stephen Curry was very very very overated the kid is to soft, to small, and just to cocky. This is NBA this isnt college there are millions of people watching you. Stephen Curry I knew would choke he is nothing but a 2nd round pick I think Warriors just like the Nets should of taken sometime in choosing there pick. I have high hopes for Jordan Hill I think he has star potential. I am never wrong I am very smart when it comes to the sport of basketball thats why I have my masters in Sports Management.
by Randy Oreens on Jul 11, 2009 1:22 AM EDT reply actions
Can you honestly think of 30 players who should get picked before Steph Curry? Draft picks more often than not do not change a franchise. Many draftees who turn out to be stars did not blossom in the first teams they played for anyway.
You need to understand that most of us are feeling that already with Harris, Lee, and Lopez there’s not enough shots going around for young players who need to the ball.
That’s why we went for TWill, who clearly is the best wing defender in the draft (not in the league, of cuz). We need a player who could do all the vesatile things, so Harris, Lee, and Lopez could do their things.
If the management wasn’t so insistent on Yi, I’d be all for getting Hansbrough. I think TWill fits nicely to what we need at this point, and it’s not like we’re giving up any great reliable talents for him. He’s still young. I think you’re critizing him like he’s the leader of the Nets this year. One way or the other I don’t think the Nets can be competitive this year, but TWill has a chance to be the next Ron Artest or Gerald Wallace.

Biggie…Biggie….Biggie
Stop defending Twill! You claim you want the team to do better but Twill is not helping the team. The only way we can stop the owners and coaches from making bad choices is if we let them. If people like you biggie who keep egging on the coaches and saying Twill is doing great when he clearly isnt, we wont do better. They will keep sticking these guys down our throughts look at Collins, Josh Boone for 2 straight seasons, Yi. We arent being vocal enough as fans to show we dont want these players that will make the team worse. We have to Boo when players like Twill mess up and turn the ball over.
Just answer this question for me you have said you want Twill to get major minutes, if Twill turns the ball over in the first 5 games will you keep defending him and keep asking for him to start? No one will be vocal enough and Frank will continue to play him!
by Randy Oreens on Jul 11, 2009 2:25 AM EDT reply actions
I told u before. If you were gonna go with the Turnover rationale, how would you apply that to Westbrook, Speights, and Holiday, who actually had more turnovers?
The bottome line is this:
1) Nets need a rough wing defender: TWill is arguable best in the team right now.
2) Nets need another wing who can handle the ball: TWill is the 4th best in the team behind Dooling, Harris, Alston
3) Nets need help in rebounding: TWill is now the best rebounding wing in the team.
He showed all these during the summer league. He had five turnovers today and today only. In the rest of the summer league, he was nowhere close to many young potentials as far as turnovers go. All the draftees this year are showing flaws. Why does anyone need to defend a 22-year old draftee who at least shows consistency on one end?
What about the draftees who have been inconsistent on both ends? Present some logics, come on.
